Invalid for Mir, BTW. This is a very old bug. Probably a duplicate.
We've been aware of Unity doing this on netbooks for some years.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1195692] Re: Dash takes a long time to open when running Mir on Samsung N310 netbook with i915 graphics

2013-09-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed. I notice this is still happening with the latest saucy images
on netbooks. Generally everything works fine until you open the dash.
And then you have *minutes* of waiting.

In the past we thought this was due to graphics load. But I think more
likely is the simple issue that netbooks only have 1GB RAM usually. A
large chunk is consumed by graphics, and the rest is not big enough to
cope with Unity7's high memory consumption. So I think we're probably
just thrashing. I have yet to confirm this theory...

It sounds suspiciously like this is a bug in the nouveau driver, since
it only occurs when using the nouveau driver and not the nVidia driver,
and has not been reported against the intel or AMD drivers.

Bug description:
When I press Alt plus any cursor key in quick succession, the HUD
erroneously appears. This steals focus and disrupts the workflow quite
severely. This was much worse in earlier Unity versions, 5.8 already
made this a lot better. But this case still remains for me.

When I leave some time (0.5 s or so) between pressing Alt and the
cursor key, this does not happen. But when pressing them almost at the
same time, the bug happens. I can reproduce this 100%, so feel free to
ask for any additional debugging info.

The problem is not that I hit the Cursor key before alt. This proves
  it:

  $ xev | grep -A2 ^KeyPress
KeyPress event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x381,
  root 0xbe, subw 0x0, time 17590219, (112,69), root:(113,867),
  state 0x0, keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L), same_screen YES,

  state 0x8, keycode 113 (keysym 0xff51, Left), same_screen YES,

  and I get the HUD.

It does not matter which application/window is focussed. It happens in
gnome-terminal, Firefox, or the blank desktop all alike.

It does not happen with other Alt key combinations, just with the
cursor keys. I also saw this happen quite a lot with Ctrl+Alt
(controlling screen grab in KVM) or Ctrl+Alt+Cursor (changing
workspaces), but I cannot reliably reproduce those.

This is not fixed for me
Also on Asus EEE PC with Intel Atom
everything up to date (30. September) and unity is unusable due to slowness.
Just hovering over a launcher icon takes 3 seconds to show the hint
compiz is at 100% cpu for these 3 seconds

  * switching virtual desktops takes about 1 minute after selecting the new
desktop, with a few seconds between each animation step

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
If I choose not to have a password for my operating account, every
operation fails if it needs root access. Reproducible even on a newly
  set up machine. See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862543

  Release: 11.10

Cause: The password is cleared to be empty, and this prevents
authentification for many admin tasks for security reasons. However,
the user only needs to be added to the "nopasswdlogin" group, to
enable passwordless login with gdm (and any other DM that ships with a
corresponding "auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup
  nopasswdlogin" configuration).

  Fix:
   * lightdm to add pam rule
   * account managing tools not clearing password but only adding user to
 "nopasswdlogin" group

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 11.10 as normal. During installation, when you are asked to
choose a password, enter one, since the installation can not continue if you do
not do so.
  2. Boot the newly installed system and log in as usual.
  3. Choose "System Settings" from the launcher on the left and open "User
Accounts".
  4. In the User Accounts window, click on Unlock at the top right of the
dialog. Enter your user password when prompted.
  5. Click on the four dots next to the "Password" label to change your
password.
  6. Select "Log in without a password" from the dropdown box. Close the window.
  7. Try to perform an action requiring administrative privileges. For example,
try running "sudo apt-get update" from a terminal.

  Expected behavior:
sudo should require the user's password and accept it, or proceed without
requiring any password altogether.

  Actual behavior:
sudo requires the user's password and does not accept it (since it is set to
an empty string in /etc/shadow).

  Further notes:
After disabling the password request at login, the /etc/shadow file related
to the test user account I created looked like this:
  test::15283:0:9:7:::
This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts
with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given
in order to perform
  administrative actions.

  Workaround:
-If you can not perform administrative actions but can still login without a
password, open a terminal and type "passwd". This command should prompt you for
a new password and change it without any problems.
-If you can not login, you can reset your password by booting into recovery
mode and changing it there. Follow the instructions at
.

You may also choose to use a password for your account and to enable
autologin at the same time. This choice will enable you to benefit the
advantage of not entering a password at boot time with the security of
Ubuntu requiring your password when attempting to perform privileged
actions. Of course, this helps when you are the only desktop user or
  the primary one.

I want to have my system fully in English, but actually the date is

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232301] Re: Removing Unity also removes ubuntu-desktop

2013-09-29 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The ubuntu-desktop *is* Unity and a selection of associated packages.
If you want a custom Ubuntu desktop without Unity, remove the ubuntu-
desktop package, then install whatever other packages you want to use
instead. That's how easy it is. It is not a bug that it works this
way. It's what "working correctly" looks like.

A second alternative is to install one of the Ubuntu flavours (Kubuntu,
Xubuntu, etc) so you're starting with a Ubuntu desktop system that does
not have the ubuntu-desktop package installed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232301] Re: Removing Unity also removes ubuntu-desktop

2013-09-29 Thread Fred
You claim that I can uninstall Unity, but when I attempt to do so, it
also removes ubuntu-desktop.

How am I supposed to uninstall Unity?
Isn't it possible to make the ubuntu-desktop package recommend instead of
depend on Unity?

I don't want this Unity on my system.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232301] Re: Removing Unity also removes ubuntu-desktop

2013-09-29 Thread Edwin Pujols
ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage which depends on the default Ubuntu
desktop (unity, unity lens, indicators, etc, etc). It is not a bug that
it will be removed if you remove Unity, since only makes sense for it be
installed if all its dependencies are installed.

Bug description:
New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1229795] Re: Unity animations very slow with 3D capable graphics Intel 945

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1222602 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1222602

@dejan, you should comment on bug #1222602 as this bug is a dup of that.
There is a workaround in comment #6 of that bug which works for me.

Title:
Unity animations very slow with 3D capable graphics Intel 945

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
With up to date Saucy, Unity animations are very slow. For example, hovering
over launcher the app tooltip takes three seconds to appear fully and is drawn
as a series of images each more opaque that the previous. Normal operation
within an app is ok as is window movement and switching between windows using
the mouse. To draw the shutdown dialog takes many seconds however.
I can't see anything unusual in .xsession-errors, syslog or Xorg.0.log
The result is that the machine is virtually unusable.

2013-09-29 Thread dejan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1222602 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1222602

As workaround for this problem i use this:
1. Create .xprofile file inside home folder
2. Add this: export UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1
3. Logoff/Logon

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1105886] Re: Dash Home menu screen graphics malfunction

2013-09-29 Thread Edwin Pujols
** Description changed:

+
+ If I open Dash Home menu screen before having opened anything it works fine.
Should I open any program or window, then try to open Dash Home menu, I get
malfunctions. Usually the icons are visible, but program descriptions are
filled in with color, such as a block of red or yellow. Other times the whole
menu is blank and turns black upon mouseover. Rarely, it locks up my graphics
card and have to restart system by switching to terminal (by using ctr+alt+f1).

I tried removing the caches under ~/.cache, reset zeitgeist, etc.
There is nothing I can do about it. When I switch to a guest session,
  it's the same: emptyness.
