Bug description:
Mark has asked us to consider retiring the notification area whitelist
for 12.10. The application indicator system has been in place for two
years now, which should be long enough for applications to adopt it.

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the
only software still able to use the menu bar as if it was a
notification area, because their developers don't necessarily know
  that Ubuntu even exists.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1248416] [NEW] setting org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise false no longer functions

2013-11-05 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

I have a shell script that I run each session to return settings to the
way I like them.

This portion of the script worked perfectly in 13.04 but fails in 13.10:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise false

When I run this command at a prompt I do not get any error messages but
clicking in a partially occluded window still raises it to the top of
the stack. I expect the click to be passed through to the application
without raising its window.

Thanks

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1066374] Re: "/etc/init.d/networking restart" causes unity to crash (12.10 beta)

2013-11-05 Thread Gary Houston
I've noticed that the same thing happens when using Xubuntu (XFCE),
which suggests that it's nothing to do with Unity but has something to
do with the underlying layers in the window system. Since X is a
networked window system, you may expect something like this to happen,
but I don't remember seeing it until the last couple of years.

Once in the console I can use kill -9 to terminate X, but the graphical
session manager doesn't restart automatically. In Xubuntu I'd guess that
you need to restart lightdm if you want to avoid rebooting.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I ran "/etc/init.d/networking restart" from the terminal and it
appeared that Unity crashed as result. The launcher and the top panel
disappeared. I was still able to right click on the desktop and get
the context menu, the theme from my open chromium windows seems to
have had resorted to a default theme of some sort and I wasn't able to
type in the chromium window location bar.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-11-05 Thread hufemj
Upon upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04, all of the icons in the taskbar at the
upper right disappeared after login. That is, when the login screen was
present, the gear icon , time, etc. appeared. After login, the top
status bar is completely blank. I have rebooted several times and the
problem is very repeatable. I have a couple of sample users on this
desktop and logging in as one of them has the same results. That is, no
gear icon for logout/shutdown/reboot or clock or anything else.

I did an update around 8 PM Eastern time today, rebooted and the problem
remains.

Bug description:

Bug description:
At the moment, this bug is essentially the reason why bug 1091583
  exists in unity.

When we switched to using backbuffer persistence in compiz, it means
that it was no longer permissible for plugins to draw outside damage
boundaries, as that would result in bleeding from the regions beneath
not being redrawn. At the moment, calling
  nux::WindowThread::RenderInterfaceFromForeignCmd causes the entire
interface to be drawn on-screen, regardless of the damage region
inside of compiz. This means bleeding everywhere.

Nux should support the concept of being able to selectively present
its render targets to the screen, so that there's no overdraw when we
only need to re-present, eg, the launcher or the panel.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1248029] Re: unity stalls on window resize using hotspot

2013-11-05 Thread Andrew Marsden
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: The behaviour seems to be arbitrary, and it appears
impossible to predict when it will happen, but it is always upon a
"failed" window resize. It just happened to me again, and has been
happening a few times a day the past couple of weeks.

Title:
unity stalls on window resize using hotspot

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When resizing windows using the "hotspots" (i.e. drag to top for full-
size, drag to right for right-half, etc), it generally works fine.

However, if I drag a window to the top hotspot, and release it too
quickly, before the orange border has had time to fill the screen,
then the window will not resize, the orange border will stay almost-
complete and I will be unable to interact with the GUI.

Dropping to tty and back to display blanks the screen, displaying only
  the cursor

Replacing unity using tty works, and I can use the interface as normal
from thenceforth, including resizing the window that caused the crash.

I haven't had the problem with Left or Right hotspots, but I don't use
  them nearly as much.

I thought the problem was with Chrome, but I've managed to reproduce
(accidentally) using Libreoffice Writer and Libreoffice Calc.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-11-05 Thread Jason Donahue
Finally got around to updating to 13.10 and find my patch no longer
works. As Maxim stated com.canonical.Unity.Panel is not being used. So,
now my ppa just whitelists everything.

Again, the ppa is here:

https://launchpad.net/~timekiller/+archive/unity-systrayfix

to use it, of course:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:timekiller/unity-systrayfix
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I am attaching the (much more simplified) patch here.

** Patch added: "Global systray whitelist"

Bug description:
Mark has asked us to consider retiring the notification area whitelist
for 12.10. The application indicator system has been in place for two
years now, which should be long enough for applications to adopt it.

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the
only software still able to use the menu bar as if it was a
notification area, because their developers don't necessarily know
  that Ubuntu even exists.

Sometimes left clicking the nautilus launcher icon doesn't bring up a

instance of nautilus is showing up.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a nautilus window by clicking on the launcher icon.
  2. Navigate to a symlinked directory whose target is located on a different
harddrive (for example: a symlink to a folder on a sd-card).
  3. Minimize the nautilus window.
  4. Try to bring up that window again by clicking the launcher icon.

  What happens:

  1. A new instance (window) of nautilus is opened.
  2. There's no obvious way to access the first window again. The only way is
ALT+TAB.

  What schould happen:

If a nautilus window is already open and minimized clicking the

  * Make IdoSwitchMenuItem accessible from gtk_menu_new_from_model.
  * IdoUserMenuItem: only allow file icons as avatars In practice, all
avatars are file icons. This restriction allowed for quite some
cleanup, as we don't need to worry about symbolic icons and themes
aymore. Note: this patch removes the warning when the user avatar
image was not found. This is a common enough case that the warning
just clutters up logs.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1228360] Re: No clock in menu bar and can't edit Clock settings

2013-11-05 Thread Kervin
Found the issue. I built a few libraries from source earlier in
/usr/local/lib . indicator-datetime-service found those libraries before
the system libraries in /usr/lib for some reason. It shouldn't have done
that.

One of those libraries pulled in the old libical.so.0 dependency which
was no longer available. When I deleted all the GNOME/Evolution related
libraries in /usr/local/lib I could start indicator-datetime-service
again and my clock shown up.

Why would indicator-datetime-service load libraries from /usr/local/lib
before /usr/local if they have the same library versions? Isn't that a
bug?

Status in OEM Priority Project precise series:

Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “notify-osd” source package in Precise:

Bug description:

  Precise SRU info:

  [Impact]

   * The patch provide a fix to provide the "x-canonical-private-
synchronous" to work with notifications different with
  LAYOUT_ICON_INDICATOR layout. Currently the "x-canonical-private-
synchronous" interface only provide this layout to support brightness
  and volume control.

  [Test Case]

   * This patch make following command behave correctly.

  #notify-send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 "wireless"
  "disable" -i notification-network-wireless-none ; sleep 1 ; notify-
  send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 "bluetooth" "enable"
  -i bluetooth

In current implementation, both Summary and Body text didn't get
  updated.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The risk should be minimal, the patch should only affect "x
-canonical-private-synchronous" interface. This interface is only used
in brightness and volume hotkey, and layout is different.

   * The patch is already tested in OEM projects.

  [Other Info]

  *** Original bug description:

When you send a notification in Synchronous with another, the both
Summary and Body text doesn't get updated.

  As an example:

  while true; do
  notify-send "first title" "first subtitle" -i dialog-info -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  notify-send "second title" "second subtitle" -i dialog-error -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  done

If you run the above, what you should see is the Icon changing, but the
summary/body text staying the same.
Is this expected behaviour from the libnotify library? Or is this an
overlooked feature?

  Iain

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1211514] Re: Shutdowns fail to finish if laptop lid is closed before completely shutdown

2013-11-05 Thread Steve Langasek
The GNOME stack should be handling the suspend suppression. If it's
not, that seems to be an issue with yet another undocumented
interface/assumption within the GNOME components.

Bug description:
In an attempt to reduce unnecessary frequent periodic file access to
save power, I noticed that indicator-datetime-service is opening and
closing /etc/localtime every 5 seconds on my desktop and not
apparently reading this file. On the ubuntu phone it is doing the
  same thing with /etc/writable/localtime.

This seems a little excessive, especially because the TZ data doesn't
change quite that frequently. It would be useful if this excessive
polling on the file could be reduced if possible.

  [Impact]
   * Battery drain, wasting energy by a lot of unnecessary polling

  [Test Case]
   * Observe how often /etc/localtime or /etc/writable/localtime gets opened
for reading

  [Regression Potential]
   * Possibility to not get the local time reliably

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1211514] Re: Shutdowns fail to finish if laptop lid is closed before completely shutdown

2013-11-05 Thread Doug McMahon
scorecard here
shutdown suspends when lid is closed before shutdown completes on -
unity/lightdm, unity/gdm, gnomes-hell/lightdm

shutdown does not suspend when lid is closed before shutdown completes -
gnome-shell/gdm

So adding lightdm & upstart, maybe someone can figure out as this flies
in the face of any laptop & any Os I've ever used

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage

2013-11-05 Thread Colin King
3.8.6-0ubuntu2 + 13.01.0+13.10.20131031-0ubuntu1, can't reproduce heavy
CPU load (thanks!) but I do still see some heap growth. I ran gimp,
libreoffice, firefox for 296 seconds and observed:

heap change:
88 brk() calls, growth of 11496K, or ~38.75K/sec growth

CPU usage:
   4.38% (3.95% user, 0.43 system)

~11 minor page faults/second

So it still seems to be consuming memory quite quickly for me.

[ See the attached log, launchpad formatting sucks ]

I also observed a couple of brk() calls, and a small amount of heap

  speculating on this.

Upon fresh install of 13.10 the indicator-applet did not show the datestamp,
but the applet for the user-settings and logoff. The System-Settings for

@Sebastien: excuse me, I missed the comment about libgtk-3-0. I tried to
install libgtk-3-0 from saucy-proposed, but apt is going to remove evince and
63 other packages in this case :-/
I'm sorry, I have no time to dig in dependencies till weekend.

Impact: high CPU/memory usage from unity-panel-service

  Test case:

Open a large image in the GIMP and activate a lot of items from the
global menu. Using shortcuts is enough and faster to reproduce this
bug (I've always used Ctrl+A and Ctrl+Shift+A). Memory usage of unity-
panel-service increases steadily and it uses a lot of CPU shortly
after activating the menu items in a short time.

Regression potential: check that the menus are stable/working as they
  should

  -
Just going about my business on Ubuntu Raring amd64 on an x230 and I heard
the fan kick into action. top showed me that unity-panel-service was consuming
all the free cycles on one of my CPUs. I killed it before my machine
overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see why it was totally pegging out
a CPU.

I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

2013-11-05 Thread Leonid Evdokimov
I installed indicator-appmenu_13.01.0+13.10.20131031-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb,
restarted unity-panel-service and memory leak seems to be still there.
unity-panel-service RSS grows from 108M to 175M in 3 hours.
On the other hand, I have not seen 100% CPU spikes yet.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-11-05 Thread Maxim Loparev
@milos-sd That's empty autobuild according to the diff from saucy
version
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/155818257/unity_7.1.2%2B13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1_7.1.2%2B13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1systray1.diff.gz.
The old patch can't be applied to the new sources, as it seems whole
com.canonical.Unity.Panel schema missing. I guess some manual work
needed here.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-11-05 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I installed those two packages long ago even before they landed in
saucy-proposed. I simply downloaded them from SRU Staging PPA and so far
everything worked.

Unfortunately today indicator-datetime didn't load. I think that there
was about 30 successful boots (checking disks on Plymouth screen) since
I installed the packages that supposedly fix the problem.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 870042] Re: Memory leak in compiz (and maybe Xorg)

2013-11-05 Thread Manuel Zamora-Morschhäuser
I have the same problem. After some time of use (some hours to some
days, after some suspend/resume cycles) compiz and Xorg both reach
around 500MB used RAM each. "compiz --replace" frees up compiz' used
memory, but Xorg stays the same.

I had the same problem since forever (starting with natty and Nvidia 295
drivers) and now saucy (319-updates).

If I had to guess this seems to be more of a nvidia/Xorg problem, than a
compiz problem.

Current system:
- Ubuntu 13.10, stock kernel (3.11.0-12-generic), proprietary Nvidia drivers
(319-updates) on a NVS 5200M laptop GPU

make a finale descision about this bug. As far as I understand the
comments here downgrading to a lower gimp version will not solve the
problem.

:

sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

did not fix it for me because alle packages were uptodate.

Title:
Nothing happens when I click the Update Manager icon

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
An icon for the Update Manager has appeared in the launcher. Nothing
  happens when I click it.

  Details:

   - The icon has a turquoise triangle next to it and is superimposed with the
number "96". (See attached screenshot)
   - When I hover over it, a label that says "Update Manager" is displayed.
   - When I click it, nothing happens.
   - When I double-click it, nothing happens.
   - When I right-click it, a menu is displayed containing five items.
   - When I middle-click it, nothing nothing happens.
   - After dragging it to a new position, the it still behaves the same.
   - When I press Alt+Tab, an Update Manager icon is displayed.
   - When I switch to the Update Manager icon using Alt+Tab, nothing happens.
   - When I search for and click on the Update Manager icon in the dash,
nothing happens.
   - When I click on
that-nameless-icon-that-looks-like-a-hybrid-between-a-gear-and-a-power-symbol-in-the-top-right-corner-of-the-screen
and then click "Updates Available", nothing happens.
   - 'ps -ef | grep update' returns 'update-notifier' and '/usr/bin/python
/usr/bin/update-manager --no-focus-on-map'
   - Killing '/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/update-manager --no-focus-on-map' made
the Update Manager icon go away.
   - Clicking
that-nameless-icon-that-looks-like-a-hybrid-between-a-gear-and-a-power-symbol-in-the-top-right-corner-of-the-screen
and then clicking "Updates Available" again caused the Update Manager to
finally appear and prompt me to install 96 updates.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2013-11-05 Thread Marcello Nuccio
In response to comment #42:

there is not a lot of noise about other people having the problem

I've seen this bug on all Ubuntu installations I've used in the last two years
(at least 10 computers). The problem is that it's hard to search for this bug
on launchpad. Today I've spent one full hour and I've found 6 duplicates. I've
marked them as duplicates of bug #925260
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/925260

Bug description:
Update manager is showing up in the dock but I can click on the icon
all day and nothing happens. Similarly if I do Super-S or Super-W it
  doesn't show up anywhere.

Even if I alt-tab to the application nothing shows up. This happens
only when update manager runs on its own. If I kill it and then launch
it myself it comes to the foreground just fine.

I'm not 100% sure whether this is a unity, compiz, or update-manager
bug but so far my bet is on unity.

Bug #877444 is showing again in latest updates, please re-open it. This is
