  indicator-applet does not show all applets reliably

Status in The Date and Time Indicator:

Bug description:
  beowulfk:~$ lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 13.10
  Release:  13.10
  beowulf:~$ apt-cache policy indicator-applet
  indicator-applet:
Installiert:   (keine)
Installationskandidat: 12.10.2+13.10.20130924.2-0ubuntu1
Versionstabelle:
   12.10.2+13.10.20130924.2-0ubuntu1 0
  500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/universe amd64 Packages

  Upon fresh install of 13.10 the indicator-applet did not show the datestamp,
but the applet for the user-settings and logoff. The System-Settings for
showing the clock in the applet area were set to active, but the mask was
greyed out - so the clock should have been shown.
  After a restart, the clock is shown in the top right, but the applet for
User-Settings-Logoff does not appear anymore.

  This behaviour does not seem to be reproductive in a forcefull manner.
  But people are talking about random icons showing up or not on system
  startup. Here a link to a german thread about this:

  Impact: high CPU/memory usage from unity-panel-service

  Test case:

  Open a large image in the GIMP and activate a lot of items from the
  global menu. Using shortcuts is enough and faster to reproduce this
  bug (I've always used Ctrl+A and Ctrl+Shift+A). Memory usage of unity-
  panel-service increases steadily and it uses a lot of CPU shortly
  after activating the menu items in a short time.

  Regression potential: check that the menus are stable/working as they
  should

  -
  Just going about my business on Ubuntu Raring amd64 on an x230 and I heard
the fan kick into action. top showed me that unity-panel-service was consuming
all the free cycles on one of my CPUs. I killed it before my machine
overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see why it was totally pegging out
a  CPU.

  I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
  spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
  it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

  * Clean up NIH Errors so they don't get reported on exit. (LP:
#1236720)

  [ Brandon Schaefer ]
  * Workaround for now, replace all blacklisted chars in the results
name with a '?'. So we can still render all the results with out a
crash. This needs to be fixed in pango/harfbuzz. (LP: #1239381)
  * Get the current char before moving on to the next char!.

  [ Marco Trevisan (Treviño) ]
  * UnityScreen: also redraw the HudView if it has not been fully
damaged. (LP: #1240322)
  * OverlayRenderer: only and correctly initialize the BGLayer when not
on GLSL codepath Make sure we set the initial bg_layer_ value to the
average color, and do this only if really needed. (LP: #1232726)
  * Launcher: desaturate the inactive icons when in Spread mode. (LP:
#1238892, #1238638)

for all monitors or for just one. (LP: #1051913, #1215738, #1240750,
#1240737)
  * UnityScreen: CreateSuperNewAction with Shift and Numpad for launcher
This fixes the bug that caused Super+Shift+KP_x not to work as it
should. (LP: #1240806)
  * AnimationUtils: add Start, Skip and SetValue methods These allows to
start an animation, to skip it or to just set its value. The
templates now are more intelligent and we define the values that can
assume just once, by specializing a StartValueForDirection function.
  * Support libxpathselect1.4. (LP: #1243529)
  * LauncherIcon: use nux::Animation for each Quirk property Update
Launcher and Icons code accordingly, get rid of the timespec. Remove
unneded Quirks, reduce redraws and update tests.
  * Invalidate the Icon Centers when the monitor layout changes, so we
make sure that if an icon center is set, then the icon is available
on that monitor. Added GetCenterForMonitor that allows to retrieve
the nearest valid icon center for a given monitor, and in this way
we can get the best icon that can handle a window minimization. (LP:
#767752)

  [ Lars Uebernickel ]
  * panel-service.c: don't warn about unknown image type unnecessarily
Don't warn about indicators that explicitely don't have an image
set. However, continue warning when the set image is of an unknown
type.

  [ Chris Townsend ]
  * Instead of using NeedSoftRedraw(), use QueueDraw() for the Launcher
and Panel to force a redraw to fix issue where leaving a full screen
unredirected window would not redraw the Launcher and Panel. (LP:
#1240595)

  [ Eleni Maria Stea ]
  * Added --compiz-path parameter to the unity startup script. It allows
us to start unity with custom builds of compiz (not only
/usr/bin/compiz) like that: ./unity --compiz-path
custom_compiz_build_directory/bin/compiz --replace ccp.

  [ Francis Ginther ]
  * Reverting support for libxpathselect1.4. (LP: #1245988)

  [ Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak ]
  * DebugDBusInterface: add support to libxpathselect-1.4 Some cleanups
and reworking of glib::Variant and debug::DBusInterface Same as

packaging dependencies added.

Bug description:
  All AP tests seem to fail with unity, maybe because of the
  libxpathselect1.4 usage that now gets installed? See
  http://10.97.0.1:8080/job/autopilot-trusty-daily_release/216/ for
  example.

  https://code.launchpad.net/~townsend/unity/fix-lp1243529/+merge/192381
  was merged to support xpathselect1.4

  This is a problem of landing autopilot 1.4 and all the required fixes
  at the same time, and not necessarily anything needs to change in
  unity. However this is blocking landing newer unity at the moment so
  it's better to have the bug open.

  Week 38 Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal with ppa:unity-team/staging

  Issue 1: Launchers on both monitors have desaturated look when dash is
  open in 1 of the monitors in a dual monitor set up.

  Action:

  -Have 2 monitors connected
  - Ensure CCSM - Experimental tab - launcher placement - All desktops
  - While control is in monitor 1, press super to bring up the dash
  - Observe monitor 2 - launcher on monitor 2 has desaturated look even though
the dash is open in monitor 1.

  Issue 2 : Sometimes launcher on monitor 2 goes into desaturated look
  for 1 second and is back to saturated look while dash is still open in
  monitor 1. Issue is the launcher flickering between the desaturated
  and saturated look.

  * LauncherIcon: add MultiMonitor quirks support A quirk can be now set
for all monitors or for just one.
  * Support libxpathselect1.4. (LP: #1243529)

  * Reverting support for libxpathselect1.4. (LP: #1245988)

  [ Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak ]
  * DebugDBusInterface: add support to libxpathselect-1.4 Some cleanups
and reworking of glib::Variant and debug::DBusInterface Same as
lp:~3v1n0/unity/xpathselect-1.4 but with double function removed and
packaging dependencies added.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-11-07 Thread Bruno Nova
I also confirm that the hibernate option reappeared again after updating
lightdm and liblightdm-gobject-1-0, and rebooting.
Haven't rebooted again though, so I don't know if it's permanent.

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
  from your session. For background see #13.

  However this is not persistent across reboots.

Bug description:
  Possibly this is related to lp:1227250 , which I see is freshly fixed;
  I'm on build 99 (20131015.2), and I've seen this in earlier builds
  although I haven't been able to reproduce it (and am not confident of
  these conditions now :( ). With these caveats, I'll attach a
  screenshot.

  The label for the brightness indicator appears (unreliably) inside the
  slider--is this intentional?

  Will verify in released image tomw.

While investigating bug 1232814, I found that if I killed indicator-
session-service (and let it respawn automatically) after login, the
Restart option will be (correctly) hidden.

  Unity/compiz fails to load on Intel i865 IGP (OGL 1.3) in 13.04 and
  13.10, mesa/unity_support_test is incorrect

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When I log into a desktop session in Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 (both the
  Live CD and a fresh install), the top panel and launcher both seem to
  completely fail to load.

  When viewing console output via one of the virtual terminals, I can
  see that compiz is failing to load the OpenGL plugin.

  compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'opengl' not loaded.

  Right-clicking on the wallpaper still brings up the right-click menu
  as expected, but performance is extremely slow.

  I am using an Intel i865 IGP (82865G), which supports the OpenGL 1.3
  standard. This appears to be where the bug lies.

  unity_support_test gives an incorrect report of the IGP, stating that
  it supports OpenGL 1.4. This was not the case with Ubuntu 12.10, the
  last Ubuntu release where Unity worked on this computer.

  Ubuntu 12.10's unity_support_test yields the correct test result (GL
  version is 1.4+: no), while 13.04 and 13.10's yields an incorrect test
  result (GL version is 1.4+: yes).

  Could potentially be an issue with the version of mesa included with
  13.04 and 13.10.

  Ubuntu Version: Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10 i386
  What is expected to happen: Unity loads, unity_support_test returns GL
version is 1.4+: no
  What happened instead: Unity does not load, compiz fails to load opengl
plugin, unity_support_test returns GL version is 1.4: yes

  IGP/GPU: Intel Extreme Graphics 2 82865G (i865 chipset)

Works normally on 12.04 clean installation, but fails on later versions, as
described by K.T.:

no launcher
no top panel
very slow
most keyboard shortcuts not working e.g. Crtrl-Alt-L
Desktop right click menu works.
GUI apps can be launched, and work but those that are Unity menu integrated
have no access to their menus

Bug description:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1071523] Re: Global menu hides when hovering over it

2013-11-07 Thread Steve S
This will likely be my last contribution post. I am no longer giving
unity a try. Even if parts of it weren't acting buggy on my setup, the
very premise of UI evolution is to remove clicks and mouse strokes.
Some of Unity does that other parts like the global menu adds extra
clicks and mouse strokes. I've even searched on google for any official
statement regarding the philosophy behind the global menu and have come
up empty handed. if anyone has a link to such a document, I would enjoy
reading it.

Technical update:
Last week my laptop started working half-and-half. on the laptop screen the
global menu hides from me and on my extra monitor connected to the back of my
laptop via a VGA port the global menu works just fine. One system, 2 displays,
and 2 different unity global menu behaviors.

I have installed the classic gnome in order to improve my productivity
since this setup is a work setup not just a toy to waste time on.

Resolution:
For anyone that stumbles on this post and doesn't know how to get rid of the
Unity monster, here is the command to install the gnome fall back session which
looks like the classic gnome.

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

You then simply select this as your login session when you login into ubuntu to
take advantage. Here is a link to better instructions if you need them.
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-classic-gnome-desktop-in-ubuntu-12-04-precise.html

It's a shame because there are some really good improvements in Unity
that are truly on the right track of UI evolution. I hope they will get
rid of some of the bad Ideas and release a retry version of Unity!

Good luck all

  The global menu hides every time I hover over it.

  Menu is hidden normally, moving the cursor to the top edge makes it

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage

2013-11-07 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
I've never had 100% CPU usage, only some kind memory leak that unity-
panel-service slowly uses more and more memory. After the new packages
the situation is better, but still, memory usage of unity-panel-service
is increasing over the time needs to be killed at some point to allow to
be re-loaded with acceptable memory usage again. Again: not so much CPU
usage problem here, and it wasn't the case for me either, only the
memory usage.

Bug #1242735 is my original report (which is now a duplicate of this
one) for more information.

  I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage

2013-11-07 Thread Paul Greindl
I can confirm that it is better now, but certainly not perfect. It
sometimes happens that the unity-panel-service starts to leak again, and
from time to time it consumes a lot of CPU power, though not 100%. I'm
of course on the 'proposed' update channel.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 767752] Re: Unity Windows return to the wrong place in multi-moniter

2013-11-07 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Well, it's not actually released upstream in Unity yet (yeah, I know,
weird right? Ubuntu does rolling releases of certain projects even
though the upstreams do not, which can get hellaconfused for folks not
intimately involved, and also for some who _are_ intimately involved).
No biggie, though.

Bug description:
  This sounds a lot like bug 772972, but I'm seeing it in saucy.

  If you maximize a gnome-temrinal and then un-maximize it, it will
  shrink by a full column and row.

   * run 'gnome-terminal'
   * click the maximize button (or keybinding 'maximize')
   * click the unmaximize button (or keybinding 'unmaximize')
   * notice that window has shrunk (if you do it repeatedly you'll end up with
a very small window).

  and volume control.

  [Test Case]

  send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 bluetooth enable

  done

  If you run the above, what you should see is the Icon changing, but the
summary/body text staying the same.
  Is this expected behaviour from the libnotify library? Or is this an
overlooked feature?

  Iain

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1248991] [NEW] Launcher background color visible if launcher is hidden

2013-11-07 Thread Marvin Wiesner
Public bug reported:

Infos:
System:
Description:   Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10
 Unity Version:
unity:
  Installed: 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1

500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

My Launcher is set to Autohide.
The Launcher hides correctly but the Background-Color is still visible.

The Color is the one set in CCSM für Unity→General→Background Color.
(see attached Screenshot)

If i chnage the hide-animation to Fade only then there is only a ~1-2
pixel wide line.

I have the problem since i upgraded from precise to saucy.

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal

  There's a call to damageScreen in UnityScreen::nuxDamageCompiz that I
  had to put there to work around rendering bugs when we did the GLES
  port. It has a significant impact on performance however and should be
  removed ASAP, replaced with something like the old version of
  UnityScreen::nuxDamageCompiz.

  I think this is causing bug 1039942, and probably others too.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-11-07 Thread Mika Laari
I too have now hibernate in the desktop session without killing any
process. I had modified the .pkla file earlier as described in #13 and
today after a reboot it finally works without any further tricks. I had
used pm-hibernate successfully for the last 5 days, and at least
yesterday I installed some updates.

  This is a regression.
  I have two keyboard layouts activated, the Dvorak and the English US. The
Dvorak should be the default keyboard. That is the way I have it set up, and it
 shows up in the task bar on top as En1, which is the Dvorak.
  However, when I start to type, it starts in QUERTY.
  ??
  To correct this, I go to the task bar (where it shows EN1, or Dvorak),
re-select the Dvorak, and then everything is fine.

  I have another minor problem which should probably go on another bug, but
happened at the same time.
  CTL-ALT-T doesn't bring up the terminal any more. No matter what keyboard I'm
using.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-11-07 Thread Bernd Kirchgäßner
After some updates yesterday I have the hibernate option after a reboot, too.
That didn't work a few days ago.
But I'm missing in the system properties - power properties the option in the
drop down menu What happend when top [of the notebook] closed. There are
still the options standby and nothing. (Sorry, I have the German version,
so may be there are other descriptions).
In 13.04. it was very comfortable just to close the top and the notebook goes
to hibernate. I hope in 13.10. this would by possible again.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 896740] Re: With appmenus context-menu shortcut options in nautilus do not work properly. E.g. I need to press R twice to select Rename and then hit Return to select it.

2013-11-07 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Costis, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gtk+3.0 into precise-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0/3.4.2-0ubuntu0.6 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1053302] Re: ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several cases

2013-11-07 Thread Jonathan
I still have this issue in 13.10.

It's not mentioned here, but there is another significant usability
issue with the non-overlay scrollbars. When you click on an area
above/below the scroller widget, it jumps to that location in the
document instead of scrolling up/down by one page. Traditionally the
jump action is only taken if you middle-click.

As mentioned in this bug, Firefox is a good resource for verifying what
the normal, standard appearance and behaviour for scrollbars are.

Title:
  ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several
  cases

Status in “overlay-scrollbar” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm running 12.04, and prefer the more conservative style normal scrollbars
over the overlay scrollbars. I have set them to false in the terminal:
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars false

  However after doing so, with some apps (e.g. Nautilus, Document Viewer) my
scrollbars only view a vertical bar, but no arrows on the top and bottom to
scroll up and down (please find the screenshot attached for the bottom part).
  With some programs these are shown though, for instance Gummi and Texmaker.

  It would make a big difference (for instance when having to scroll pdf
  documents containing several hundreds of pages) to have those arrows
  reinstated. Moreover, it is more aestetic and adds to the pleasant
  working experience Unity is.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1072508] Re: lens process keep running after logout

2013-11-07 Thread Steve Langasek

Bug description:
  * Impact:
  Some process, like unity-{application,files,music}-daemon, keep running after
user log out.

  * Test Case:
  1) login on Unity session
  2) open the dash
  3) check in system monitor: one instance per process -eg, 1
unity-application-daemon
  4) logout
  5) repeat steps 1-3. Now there's 2 proccess called unity-application-daemon

  if you keep repeating the steps, the number of process increase.

  * Regression potential:
  the update which contains the fix has a few changes, check that gvfs keeps
working file (try browsing different remote locations from nautilus, use the
dash to search for online music and videos, ...)

  This also affects some other process, like 3rd party unity-lens-{torrents,
wikipedia}. Scopes are not affected.
  As a result, memory footprint after login in increases.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1225063] Re: cannot remove/uninstall online/offline indicator

2013-11-07 Thread Trifon Trifonov
The package involved is indicator-messages, so if you would like the
envelope icon to disappear altogether you could just remove the
package:

sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages

My problem is that I am using a mail client, so I need the indicator,
but I don't want any of the status menu items (online, offline, etc). I
think I have uninstalled all of the packages providing instant
messaging, but the status items are still there. This was not a problem
in the previous version 13.04. I found some instructions how to produce
a patched package which hides the status icons:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/185021/how-to-remove-or-hide-chat-status-
icons-from-messaging-menu

However, there should not be a need for that: they should not be showing
at all if there is no need for them.
