Title:
Empathy’s “Insert Smiley” menu doesn't display correctly

Status in “indicator-appmenu” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The Conversation Insert Smiley menu in Empathy is a little special:
it provides images, not text, for each supported smiley, arranged on a
grid to save space and showing a tooltip with the related text used
  for the smiley.

In Ubuntu's global menu however, it's displayed as a long, empty menu,
no grid, no images and no tooltips. Selecting an entry still inserts
the smiley in the conversation window, but it's not really usable that
  way.

I'm submitting this as a new report for bug #596103, as advised ba
  mpt.

I use nvidia TwinView (one X desktop across two monitors).
notification-daemon was apparently sensitive to this (presumably
through Xinerama info?) and would popup on my primary screen.

notify-osd seems to be unaware of this, and appears in the top right
of the overall viewport, which is on my secondary screen, and less
visible, so less useful as a notifier.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD#position: If any windows are
open, a bubble should appear on whichever display contains the largest
fraction of the area of the focused window at the moment the bubble

whichever display the first pointer is on at the moment the bubble
  starts appearing.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1251193] Re: Language issue from the unity lense screen

2013-11-15 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This is a know problem due to a workaround of a severe bug in the Cairo
rendering library (a third-party library used by Unity to render text)
in which it crashes when attempting to render certain characters,
especially those from the Myanmar plane in Unicode.

A fix in Unity requires the upstream Cairo library be fixed. In the
mean time, we deemed it was safer to display '?' rather than have your
computer crash.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2013-11-15 Thread Derek White
M.S.: no, clicking on the icon will not minimise the app. We have a
minimise button for that, it's prominent.

I agree with #361, it is NOT prominent. This is a terrible reason to
break desktop functionality that has existed for over a dozen years. Get
your head out of your ass M.S.

  mlaverdiere's futher addition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/comments/2

My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
*5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-
  design/+bug/733349/+attachment/3573380/+files/minimize.patch ).
Somebody should set up a PPA (and note it here) to make it easy to
  install the patched version.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1099787] Re: Dash blur is too slow to fade in. Please don't fade it unless you can make it faster/smoother.

2013-11-15 Thread Sergio Benjamim
Using Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (daily build of nov 15) in a core i7-4700HQ and
Intel graphics, and dash fade in is still slow... and Alt+Tab
transitions are slow too... it's a shame for ubuntu to be slow in a new
hardware like this...

Change Blur effect to No blur or Static blur (using Ubuntu Tweak for
this) vastly improved performance.

Other solution is include:

export UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1

to the .xprofile file in user folder, like comment #10.

This last solution works well here (and it is very simple to
implement!). Why ubuntu not coming with this file configuration active,
knowing that 70 or 80% of all desktops, laptops and ultrabooks does not
come with an Nvidia or AMD card, just a single Intel graphics? And
knowing also that the hardware can do all these effects is not installed
by default (like Nvidia and AMD graphics cards)?

Dash and indicators invisible when compositing is set in Metacity

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Unity is not usable enough for me to use it for more than a few
minutes, but I keep trying so I often switch between the Classic and
Desktop mode. In Classic mode, I use Metacity with compositing
enabled. Because of that, when I'm using Unity, Dash and all the
indicators are totally broken (they are invisible).

Disabling compositing for Metacity in gconf make it work. Compiz seems
  to be importing that.

When a window is maximized, the close/minimize/maximize are not
accessible if the window has a prompt running inside it.

  An example:
Open synaptic, maximize the window and pick a software to install or do an
upgrade.
While the upgrade/install prompt is running, ability to
minimize/maximize/close the application will be lost.
