[Dx-packages] [Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version

2013-12-04 Thread Iain Lane
Mmm, yeah, we might be able to use the alternatives system or something
to do that. I don't know though --- there would have to be a way to know
that the support you want is in the control centre implementation that's
going to be called.

Bug description:
  Ubuntu/Unity uses GNOME Control Center as the application to configure
  the Unity session. We've made a lot of changes appropriate for Ubuntu
  and Unity (61 patches) which makes it hard to maintain and creates a
  conflict for Ubuntu GNOME to use the control center. Unity 7 will be
  replaced by Unity 8 in the future which has a new settings interface.

  So we can continue to remain on the current version of GNOME Control
  Center but allow Ubuntu GNOME to continue to update we will create a
  new project lp:unity-control-center which is a copy of GNOME Control
  Center 3.6 but with appropriate renaming so both can be installed.

  A number of packages that refer to gnome-control-center need to be
  updated to refer to unity-control-center (see bug tasks).

  A PPA for testing is https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive
  /unity-control-center/+packages.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-12-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
 The status of this bug really gives the impression that no one cares
about such bugs.

Well, we do care but:

- there is a lot to do

- that bug concerns a non default option/a technical one, so it's not
the most important item on the todolist

- the number of comments make it difficult to read (one needs to spend
like an hour trying to understand what's going on)

What would be useful:

- update the bug description to be an accurate summary of the situation
(it seems from recent comments that only the documentation needs
updating? if the summary was reflecting what needs to be done and
sparing people to have to read 48 verbose comments to figure that out it
would help to get the item picked up and resolved)

- if you want to update the documentation and submit a merge request
that would probably help to get the change in
(https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs)

  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
  from your session. For background see #13.

  However this is not persistent across reboots.

Bug description:

  Precise SRU info:

  [Impact]

   * The patch provide a fix to provide the x-canonical-private-
  synchronous to work with notifications different with
  LAYOUT_ICON_INDICATOR layout. Currently the x-canonical-private-
  synchronous interface only provide this layout to support brightness
  and volume control.

  [Test Case]

   * This patch make following command behave correctly.

  #notify-send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 wireless
  disable -i notification-network-wireless-none ; sleep 1 ; notify-
  send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 bluetooth enable
  -i bluetooth

  In current implementation, both Summary and Body text didn't get
  updated.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The risk should be minimal, the patch should only affect x
  -canonical-private-synchronous interface. This interface is only used
  in brightness and volume hotkey, and layout is different.

   * The patch is already tested in OEM projects.

  [Other Info]

  *** Original bug description:

  When you send a notification in Synchronous with another, the both
  Summary and Body text doesn't get updated.

  As an example:

  while true; do
  notify-send first title first subtitle -i dialog-info -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  notify-send second title second subtitle -i dialog-error -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  done

  If you run the above, what you should see is the Icon changing, but the
summary/body text staying the same.
  Is this expected behaviour from the libnotify library? Or is this an
overlooked feature?

  Iain

Bug description:
  Hi,

  I installed Unity 8 from the Software Center on Ubuntu 13.10, along
  with all main apps (web-browser, gallery...) just out of curiosity (I
  have no coding abilities whatsoever).

  But now, every time I boot my computer, I get two different network
  indicators on my Unity 7 panel. The second one has a small lock on it,
  and is the Unity 8 indicator. Whenever I run Unity 8 in a terminal and
  then close it, the indicator disappears.

  On a similar note, the same kind of mix happens when I receive a
  message on Empathy. Phone and SMS appear in my messaging menu and the
  message is treated as both phone call and SMS. This is more
  problematic because it prevents me from opening a conversation in
  Empathy (even when I go directly in Empathy, the window won't open).

  I guess some parts of Unity 8 load at startup, but I don't which, how
  or why...

  But after all, it's very nice seeing these hints of future
  convergence!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-12-04 Thread Benjamin Tegge
** Description changed:

- I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
- enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
- followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
- (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but the
- option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk works.
+ Summary:
+
+ The issues stopped appearing from 2013-11-07 onwards. The menu is built
+ correctly now, but it is unknown which version of an updated package
+ from that timeframe actually fixed the menu issue.
+
+ The documentation needs to be updated with the instructions from the
+ solution below to reenable hibernation in 13.10.

+
+ Solution to reenable to hibernate menuentry:
+
+ File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
+ hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1256590] Re: J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator

2013-12-04 Thread Paul Ellinghaus
I have noticed the same issue (J. Random User appearing in menu) on my system
today.
I'm on Ubuntu 13.10 (32 bit).

Yesterday I re-installed SciLab via Ubuntu Software Centre - this is the
only change I made recently. Possibly automatic updates also occured in
the background.

Title:
  J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator

Status in “ido” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Yesterday I encountered an issue that was very concerning, at least
  until I investigated a bit more, and found that it may only be due to
  debug/test code that's still be present in released software. The
  search I made brought me here. Please redirect me if I'm in the wrong
  place.

  J. Random User appeared in the Ubuntu 13.10 (x86_64) Unity Power
  indicator list, below 'Lock' and above '{my user name}'.

  This was only noticed as I was about to lock the screen, which I do a
  number of times per day, however, this time J. Random User was
  visible.

  There was no User Account for that entry in System Settings User Accounts.
  There was no one else logged onto the machine except my own username (checked
by '$ w').
  There seemed to be no rogue processes running (checked in log and current
processes).

  From a security point of view, it was very concerning. But after my
  searches on the matter, I belive the machine not to be compromised,
  but tickled by 'developer test code'.

  Restarting the computer removed the issue.

  It could be coincidence, but the only bit of new software I tried (for
  the first time ever) was the Remmina Remote Desktop Client to see if
  was interested to remotely connect to another computer on the home
  network. After restarting my computer and running that software again,
  it did not cause a J. Random User to appear in the indicator, so it
  could be a red-herring.

  It could also be related to this? :
  https://code.launchpad.net/~larsu/ido/custom-menu-items/+merge/165498

  Hope you know something about it, or can redirect this bug report
  elsewhere.

  Thanks.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-12-04 Thread Eric Walker
Just wanted to add to the list of people having this same issue. All
three of my machines (two Xubuntu and one Ubuntu Studio) that I updated
now don't have a functioning indicator on the sound. I am not keen to
having to install a workaround that includes holding updates to keep
the workaround in place. Much rather this be fixed permanently. Two of
my friends that I got to switch from Windows to Xubuntu also now have
the same problem and now they are doubting their decision. I can't see
how this is remaining a low priority since this is so visual. I am very
new to the Ubuntu world and have been most pleased with Xubuntu and
Ubuntu Studio and so have my friends but this is not giving a good
impression to them.  Just saying.

This is a high priority bug, you can see it at the top of this page
This command will implement the workaround
sudo wget http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=4HHup7ZF -O
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/indicator-sound.service
then logout and login
to verify it worked run this
md5sum /usr/share/dbus-1/services/indicator-sound.service
it should give you this:

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Summary:

  The issues stopped appearing from 2013-11-07 onwards. The menu is
  built correctly now, but it is unknown which version of an updated
  package from that timeframe actually fixed the menu issue.

  The documentation needs to be updated with the instructions from the
  solution below to reenable hibernation in 13.10.

  -

  Solution to reenable to hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was enabled
and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I followed the
instructions on how to reenable hibernate
(https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but the option
is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:

/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

2013-12-04 Thread Jeffery To
I've submitted a merge request: https://code.launchpad.net/~jefferyto

Would it be helpful to submit one for Saucy as well, even though it's
already released? I imagine any Saucy users wanting to enable hibernate
will need to find this information somehow.

  IMPORTANT 1: Please don't post any me too message; use the Does

  description on Launchpad.

  IMPORTANT 2: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
  verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop

  indicator that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a
  tough time to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please
  abstain from doing that.

  =
  Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
   [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
  The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

  Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
  address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
  the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
  tracks the implementation of this project.

  The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility:  Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-12-04 Thread Eric Walker
Thank you for your quick response. That has worked. I will pass this
command on to my friends for them to run in a terminal window. Glad to
see the priority is high. As I have mentioned I am new to the linux
world and quite leery of messing around with commands in a terminal
window but simply copying and pasting from your command made it simple.
Look forward to the permanent fix. With the release of Windows 8 and
how many of my friends do not like it, now is the time to get people to
switch. That is why I switched and am so far pleased. I hope to learn
more as time goes. Thanks again.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1065660] Re: desktop performance is too slow

2013-12-04 Thread GeuS
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1055936 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1055936

My experience is the following:
The mentioned graphic card have neved worked fine with unity.
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go
7300]

Right now I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and still the system works very bad.
Very bad performance of the system (with others desktop systems the computer
works perfect), a lot of crashes of the compiz process, problems in the drawing
of the different windows. Sometimes the windows paints invalid data (ie: others
parts of the screen or a noisy texture).

Sometimes this behavior becomes more frequent, the windows does not get
painted properly. If I move, or resize the window, it is repainted and
looks works. Other times it does not work.

Sometimes when the windows does not paint well the windows resize method
does not work if the windows is resized to a higher size (ie:
maximization). On the other hand if it is resized to a lower window
size, it repaits well.

Perhaps this experience are interesting for developers who may fix the bug.
Thanks.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1257889] [NEW] Left clicking launcher icons only works once on specific dual monitor setups

2013-12-04 Thread Hadi Skeini
Public bug reported:

I'm using a dual monitor setup with 1680x1050 and 2560x1440 screens.
When the 1440p is aligned to the right or below the other screen, and the
launcher is just on the 1440p screen, each individual icon on the launcher only
reacts to a left click once. After that, left clicking does not launch the
application anymore but middle, right click and dragging the icon still works.
Having the 1440p on the left or above the other screen does not cause this bug.
Also having the launcher placed on both screens at the same time does not cause
it.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-12-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
 I've submitted a merge request: https://code.launchpad.net/~jefferyto
/ubuntu-docs/lp1232814/+merge/197782

Thanks!

 Would it be helpful to submit one for Saucy as well

It can hurt, saucy is not a LTS and I'm not sure if we are going to have
SRU updates of the documentation, but if we have that means the change
would be rolled out (we can also make the case of doing a SRU for that
change if it's judged important enough)

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was enabled
and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I followed the
instructions on how to reenable hibernate
(https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but the option
is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

   =
   Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
 screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
 somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way
 up to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used
 for the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized),
 but since Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be
 an option to switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would
 be welcomed by many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it
 that works.

   A commonly suggested solution is:
[ ] Global Menu on
[ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
   The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on
 only for maximized windows).

   -
   Desired change:

   Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
   address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
   the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
   tracks the implementation of this project.

   The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

   ---
   Menus
   Location:Global/Local
   Visibility:  Hidden/Always displayed

Bug description:

  Precise SRU info:

  [Impact]

   * The patch provide a fix to provide the x-canonical-private-
  synchronous to work with notifications different with
  LAYOUT_ICON_INDICATOR layout. Currently the x-canonical-private-
  synchronous interface only provide this layout to support brightness
  and volume control.

  [Test Case]

   * This patch make following command behave correctly.

  #notify-send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 wireless
  disable -i notification-network-wireless-none ; sleep 1 ; notify-
  send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 bluetooth enable
  -i bluetooth

  In current implementation, both Summary and Body text didn't get
  updated.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The risk should be minimal, the patch should only affect x
  -canonical-private-synchronous interface. This interface is only used
  in brightness and volume hotkey, and layout is different.

   * The patch is already tested in OEM projects.

  [Other Info]

  *** Original bug description:

  When you send a notification in Synchronous with another, the both
  Summary and Body text doesn't get updated.

  As an example:

  while true; do
  notify-send first title first subtitle -i dialog-info -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  notify-send second title second subtitle -i dialog-error -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  done

  If you run the above, what you should see is the Icon changing, but the
summary/body text staying the same.
  Is this expected behaviour from the libnotify library? Or is this an
overlooked feature?

  Iain

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-12-04 Thread pqwoerituytrueiwoq
in that case lets make this long line another 25% longer
Exec=/bin/sh -c 'if [ -n $(ps -U $USER | grep xfce4-panel) ]; then
/usr/lib/indicator-sound-gtk2/indicator-sound-service;else /usr/lib/$(if [
$(arch) == i686 ];then echo i386;else
arch;fi)-linux-gnu/indicator-sound/indicator-sound-service;fi'

@eqwalker updated for 32bit compatibility
sudo wget http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=iUnRRuA6 -O
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/indicator-sound.service
verify with this
md5sum /usr/share/dbus-1/services/indicator-sound.service
3555d649a4fbd10fbb13c8a17a7977dd  /tmp/tmpfile

I tested this on both a 64bit and 32bit live disk of 13.10

i have tried all of these and none return i386 or x86_64, so if anyone knows a
command that does i would like to know, i wanted to keep that Exec line simple
but it is getting ridiculous
$(arch), $(uname -m) and $(dpkg --print-architecture)

Have rollbacked 3 computers to mint 15 (ubuntu 13.04) and get rid of

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1257852] Re: No Drivers

2013-12-04 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
This is not a bug. The open source radeon driver is pre-installed for
the GPU, although the information panel may say Unknown until you
install mesa-utils package:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/946620

As for Realtek, please be more specific which device you think needs
drivers (output of lspci might be helpful). Although Realtek does offer
special Linux drivers for a lot of its common chipsets, most users will
just want to use what's already built into the kernel.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2013-12-04 Thread quequotion
Well, it looks like the tide has turned toward sweeping this under the
rug by changing the man page...

Allow me to reiterate that this is the wrong way to fix this bug.

The correct way would be to support the timeout parameter.

That would also follow the freedesktop spec, if it still means anything
to anybody.

Case in point:

Similar to adryoman5, I'm use a script that controls a television card
and uses notify-osd to provide information much like the OSD on an
actual television. Some of the messages are relatively important, others
are unimportant. The --urgency parameter is not what I'm looking for
as it only controls which messages a user will actually see (and users
have no idea how to control which messages they will actually see). The
best way to do this is to specify all the messages as --
urgency=critical to be certain they will actually make it onto the
screen; but some of them don't need to stay there long.

For example, when channel surfing, if I leave each CH+/- on the screen
for five seconds, by the time I've switched five channels I might still
be looking at the number of the first one, or possibly five numbers for
five different channels. That would be dumb. The numbers need to be
displayed, but they don't need to be displayed for five seconds each.
Less than a second each would be acceptable. This is not possible with
the current design.

You might ask why I just don't replace each old notification with the
next one, but then I'd have to redirect you to bug 257135
