Backlight keeps going back to lowest setting

Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I'm running the 05-Sep-2013 maguro build on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus
(toro). From first startup, the backlight was at its lowest level.
Going into the "Battery" menu and setting the brightness to a more
reasonable level only lasts a few moments as the backlight will
eventually snap to the lowest setting. The slider itself doesn't seem
to change from its higher setting, the backlight level simply drops on
  its own.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 961890] Re: Keyboard shortcuts - dash home does not minimize with ctrl-super-D

2013-12-16 Thread Christopher Townsend
I think the design needs to be adjusted some for this. There is no
concept of a "minimized" Dash. The Dash is either opened or closed.

The following needs Design input:

- If the Dash is open, what happens to the Dash the first time Ctrl-
Super-D is hit? Does is stay open or should it close?

- If the answer to above is to close the Dash, what happens when Ctrl-
Super-D is hit again? Does it stay closed or shall it open again?

Bug description:
I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature request. I'm going for a
bug because this feature blocks an efficient work proces using ctrl-
super-d to go to your desktop.

  * steps to reproduce

  - open firefox
  - open dash home
  - minimize your windows by pressing ctrl-super-d

  * expected behavior

firefox and dash home are minimized

  * current behavior

Neither firefox or the dash home is minimized, there seems to be a
flicker in the screen when pressing ctrl-super-d.

all screens and windows should be minimized when pressing ctrl-super-d
to ensure an expected behavior when using this keyboard shortcut. Its
also neccessary for an efficient work process (kind of important on a
  desktop computer).

  * Extra information

At this moment there seems no shortcuts working when there is an
active unity menu item opened. e.g. no shortcut is working if dash
home is opened, or any of the dropdowns in the upper right corner
(switch user account, time and date settings, etc). An solution that
solves these generic problems is prefered.

  --
  Desired resolution:

  - Pressing "Ctrl+Super+D" should minimise both the Dash (if it is
  open) and all windows.

( See http://tinyurl.com/chxs485 for the full list of Unity keyboard
  shortcuts )

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1260986] Re: brightness not remembered after screen dim

2013-12-16 Thread Jamie Strandboge
** Description changed:

If I am in a dark room and using the phone, I like to move the
brightness down to the dimmest value via the indicator. If I'm using an
app that requires concentration (eg, playing Sudoku) the screen might
dim even further while I'm thinking (somewhat odd in and of itself, but
this is a visual cue that the screen is about to blank, so 'ok'). If I
click within the app, the screen is brightened not to the value I
selected for the dark room I am in (ie, the dimmest), but to some other
  brighter value.

Interestingly, if I adjust to the dimmest setting and let the screen
blank, when I unblank, the screen brightness setting is remembered
thereafter (ie, I can play sudoku, let the screen dim, touch the screen
and then it is at the brightness I previously selected).

What seems to be happening is that the indicator dims the screen, but
the value is not actually saved until screen blank and tapping the
screen after screen dim before blanking resets it to the previously
saved value (ie, not the one I just set via the indicator). Performing
various combinations of setting brightness, dimming, blanking, etc seems
  to confirm this.
+
+ UPDATE: I'm not sure that the dimmest setting is actually remembered
+ after screen blank after all-- I was sure that I witnessed this, but
+ then last night it didn't appear to be working this way. Maybe there is
+ another bug in play

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1260978] Re: should be able to control music service from the greeter

2013-12-16 Thread Jamie Strandboge
saviq, just to be explicit, currently this is not exposed via the
indicator (I think that is what you meant by 'meant' :).

kgunn72, I agree-- while from the greeter I can access the sound
indicator, its ease of use for this use case is somewhere between a
passcode-less swipe of the greeter (since I have to do a fine-motor
swipe down as opposed to a general right to left swipe) and having to
enter a passcode in the greeter. I think relying solely on the indicator
would not fully address the use case I described (driving), so
abbreviated events makes sense. I'm not sure what the abbreviated flow
of events would look like, but whatever it is, ideally it wouldn't
require having to do extra precision gestures.

On a related note, right now (ie, going through the greeter to get to
the media player) once I get to the player, I have to do precision taps
to do what I want-- if we are going the indicator route, hopefully we
will have quite large buttons to do this (I can imagine 3: play/pause
toggle, back and forward).

I use my phone to play music on random while I'm driving. This works
great except when I want to advance or pause the song, where I have to
go through the greeter first to access the player. This can either
take my attention away from driving or I need to wait until the next
stop light to advance the song. This is less of a concern when the
greeter can just be swiped with one gesture, but is a big concern if
you enable the passcode lock where you have to add the passcode to
  access the player.

If the music is playing, the greeter should allow rudimentary
manipulation of the music, eg, pause/play and forward/back. Other
platforms seem to allow for this (eg android).

Bug description:
Consider you have many windows of the same type open. One method of switching
between them is clicking the launcher icon which reveals the application
spread. Now you can choose between the windows. This is how it should be.
However, the design idea was, if the windows are marked "Always on Top" there
is no need for an application spread, as they are always on top. This is a bug
and needs to be changed, because it does not consider minimized windows and
therefore prevents switching to those windows.
If you have windows of the same application open, some of them minimized and
ALL non-minimized windows are marked as "Always on top", the application spread
does not work anymore, clicking the launcher does nothing. Whether the
minimized windows are marked always on top or not does not matter.
So the simplest way to reproduce this bug would be:
1.) Open two windows of the same application.
2.) Minimize one and mark the other (non-minimized) as "Always on top".
3.) Try to switch to the minimized window using application spread

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1100546] Re: Power indicator favours 'not present' mouse over laptop battery level

2013-12-16 Thread Peter Liljenberg
I just updated to 13.10 and was hit by this bug, so I coded a patch that
introduces a new configuration setting and menu alternative to prefer
laptop batteries over other devices, regardless of (dis)charging status.

It's in this branch, based on 13.10 (since I didn't know if there might be
incompatibilities with testing 14.04 code in a stock Ubuntu):
https://code.launchpad.net/~peter-liljenberg/indicator-power/prefer-battery-1100546

Power indicator favours 'not present' mouse over laptop battery level

Status in The Power Indicator:
  New
Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The power indicator shows the battery level for cordless mice and
keyboards, even when it cannot identify the battery level. This is a
problem as it seems to favour showing a "not present" mouse status
over the laptop battery level in the top bar.

I haven't done a good job of explaining it, so check out the
screenshot - it will explain all :)

Basically, the laptop battery should be shown in the top bar if the
mouse/keyboard is "not present".
Also hiding the mouse and keyboard when the battery level is unknown would
also be useful too :)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 780776] Re: Launcher - No feedback when application launched elsewhere

2013-12-16 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Shiyam, this particular bug would be quite difficult to fix in Unity 7.
Since an application can be launched from anywhere -- the file manager,
an indicator menu, a terminal -- I think you would need to monitor the
list of running processes, and check whether any of them match up with
an application that hasn't had any windows open yet.

This is planned to be fixed by Mir in Unity 8. There is no design
specified for it yet, though probably it will be similar to the current
feedback for Launcher items. Meanwhile, since you haven't fixed a bug in
Ubuntu yet, maybe you'd like to start with something simpler.

Bug description:
If you launch an application, for example the media player, and it
take a few seconds to load there is no feedback that the OS is doing
  something.

In my usual case I am launching by double clicking on a media file and
the application can take up to 20 seconds to load. I often do not know
whether I double clicked fast enough and do it again leading to
multiple copies of the application opening (which leads to a separate
  set of issues)

In other operating systems this is normally handled by immediately
showing an hour glass icon or similar while the application is opened.

Ubuntu 11.04, default setup except desktop effects are turned off. I'm
not sure if this is easy to fix or not.

  ---
  Desired resolution:

  - As soon as a user chooses to open a file (for example by double clicking on
the file in Nautilus, or single clicking on the file in the Dash File Lens),
the 'loading' Launcher effect should be triggered *if* the target application
is not currently running.
(the 'loading' Launcher effect is currently triggered when a user clicks on a
non-running application in the launcher)

  - If the target application is not pinned to the Launcher, it should
be added to the Launcher instantaneously the moment the user chooses
  to open the file.

  - The 'application loading' should always be triggered instantaneously
when ever a application starts to load, even if the application is not
pinned to the Launcher. This includes when applications are launched
via either the Dash or the command line.

  - also fix bug #893140

[Dx-packages] [Bug 780776] Re: Launcher - No feedback when application launched elsewhere

2013-12-16 Thread Alberto Salvia Novella
- Since Ayatana Design (the project which decides on Unity desktop
environment design) has already approved the resolution specified in the
bug description, this is the one to be implemented.

- Since the bug is already assigned to a person (Marco Trevisan), no one
else shall fix it.
