[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283981] [NEW] Multi-monitor: wrong screen layout in desktop wall

2014-02-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

I have configured my main screen on the left and a smaller screen to the
right. However when I press Super+S to show all desktops I get the
primary (bigger) screen on the right and the smaller on the left (see
attached screenshot). The outputs are effectively swapped. This leads to
the ugly effect for which I'm attaching a video.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283979] [NEW] moving windows causes the top bar and the launcher bar to flicker

2014-02-24 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

As the title says, when I grab a window and move it around the top bar
and the launcher disappear and then re-appear. Unity does not crash.
During the move these elements flicker on and off. It looks more like a
graphical glitch.

This seems to have started after I got the packages that introduced the
anti-aliased window corners.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1282798] Re: [FFe] Provide a lock screen and unlock dialogs in Unity

2014-02-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Note that the behaviour is configurable, so it's easy to fallback to use
gnome-screensaver if the new lock screen turns out to be an issue (e.g
we don't lock ourself in that direction by merging the work)

  --- original description ---

We need to provide a thematically compatible lock screen and unlock
dialogs in Unity, consistent with the unity-greeter authentication
dialog used in LightDM. This will replace gnome-screenlocker.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2014-02-24 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Ed, as Paul Sladen explained in 2013-02-09, the notification area was
basically a set of tiny windows: a program could put anything in its
window, responding to clicks, right-clicks, double-clicks, drags, or
anything else, and doing anything in response, including opening menus
in any toolkit. As a simple example (unfortunately common on Windows),
an item might open one menu on left-click and a different menu on right-
click, with some of the items in those two menus being the same. Even if
you came up with heuristics for merging two menus, there's no practical
way that a hypothetical Ubuntu component could tell, ahead of time, that
either action *would* open a menu, rather than, say, disconnect your
Voip call.

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the
only software still able to use the menu bar as if it was a
notification area, because their developers don't necessarily know
  that Ubuntu even exists.

2014-02-24 Thread Treviño
This is how things look by setting the side and bottom borders to 0,
it's quite nice for things that don't include a border on their UI (like
terminal without tabs), although I didn't change the top-side CSS, as in
this case it should have no side border as well...

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Ensure that phone timezone is something other than UTC. For instance
eastern tz (UTC-5)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1281368] Re: Decorations: windows should have 0px (bottom and side) borders

2014-02-24 Thread Doug McMahon
I don't know if there is any value now to note that the intention was to use
0px it was generally well received for the short time it existed.

The negatives were laid out here -

Dark windows look bad with the light grey? 1 px. border, particuarly some

Bug description:
Setting an alarm in the local timezone is not respected by the system
since the alarms is triggered in the equivalent UTC timezone.

  Mako build 200, 205

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Ensure that phone timezone is something other than UTC. For instance
eastern tz (UTC-5)
  2. Set an alarm for 3:00 PM in the ubuntu clock app.
  3. Indicator shows a pending alarm for 3:00 PM
  4. Check a minute or so later, indicator shows an alarm pending for 8:00 PM

  What happens:
The alarm does not go off at 3:00 PM. Instead it triggers at 8:00 PM

  What should happen:
The alarm is triggered at 3:00 PM

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1281368] Re: Decorations: windows should have 0px (bottom and side) borders

2014-02-24 Thread Treviño
@JohnLea, ah, nice if you want to increase the Shadows size as well...

You basically have to edit the variable defined in
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/unity.css and switch theme
(doing Ambiance - Radiance - Ambiance) from unity control center
(unfortunately gtk doesn't notify us when a theme file has changed, so
you have to force this in this way).

Bug description:
Back in 11.04 it was decided to go borderless but was reverted mainly because
of unity-2d. Since then users that wish this could easily adjust in metacity-1.
Now that's gone with the unity-window decorator.
Dark windows look bad with the light grey? 1 px. border, particuarly some
video players, gnome-terminal ect.
(I understand that without a border 2 overlaping terminals may be weird but
overall borderless looks better in general use

Or at the least somehow color it something less obvious distracting.

Bug description:
Impact: high CPU/memory usage from unity-panel-service

  Test case:

Open a large image in the GIMP and activate a lot of items from the
global menu. Using shortcuts is enough and faster to reproduce this
bug (I've always used Ctrl+A and Ctrl+Shift+A). Memory usage of unity-
panel-service increases steadily and it uses a lot of CPU shortly
after activating the menu items in a short time.

Regression potential: check that the menus are stable/working as they
  should

  -
Just going about my business on Ubuntu Raring amd64 on an x230 and I heard
the fan kick into action. top showed me that unity-panel-service was consuming
all the free cycles on one of my CPUs. I killed it before my machine
overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see why it was totally pegging out
a CPU.

I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

May be unity2d should use different shotcut for mainmenu?

  ---
  Desired resolution:

  - The F10 shortcut should be changed to Alt + F10. No F keys
should ever be used for shell shortcuts without an additional modifier
key. This change brings the shortcut into line with the Alt +F1
  Launcher keyboard navigation shortcut.

  - The menu key should perform the same function as Alt + F10 (display
menus). A nice to have gold plating feature would be to detect if a
menu key is present on the keyboard, and if it is display the 'menu'
key shortcut in the shortcuts overlay in place of Alt + F10

  - The Alt + F5 becomes a toggle, shifting the window between
restored and maximised states (replacing the previous windox maximise
  Alt + F10 shortcut)

connect via ssh to re-boot or shurdown or get new updates are whatever.

This bug report is being sent while logged on with GNOME shell, which
also has been having issues since January 17th, ( see bug 1273276 )
but there is a workaround that allows me to use it.

For the last few days, I see log entries in both kern.log and syslog
saying about compiz complaing about segfaults.

Everything was working fine for unity log in until a few days ago.

Bug description:
I installed the 14.04 daily build from a CD image yesterday to help
testing. Unfortunately, I cannot test anything because right upon
booting, when the desktop appears, every app I start causes about a
minute of freezing (even the mouse pointer freezes) and then a restart
(or complete crash) of the unity top menubar and sidebar.

The only thing in the desktop I customized was the Unity sidebar
button size (in the settings app - to 16 pixels first, then to 24
pixels). But even the settings app caused this crash before I could
use it to change the settings.

I am writing this in a 640x480 Firefox window without window manager
from within the crashed Unity desktop.

Is this a known bug? I sure hope so. ;)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1281806] Re: Alt-Tab switcher regularly goes into flicker loop of death or just hangs

2014-02-24 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
I just observed this flicker loop of death while closing a Thunderbird
message window. I chose Send, and after the dialog with the progress bar
got to 100%, both the dialog and the message window started flickering
madly and the whole session became unusable.

I suspect this is related to the Alt-Tab switcher, as the symptoms are
visually similar, and in both cases it appears to occur when a window
*should* be disappearing.

Alt-Tab switcher regularly goes into flicker loop of death or just

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Recently when doing Alt-Tab (and Alt-`) to switch between windows, the
rectangle display showing the icons for all the applications and
windows will suddenly start flickering rapidly and the whole X
sessions will become unresponsive to keypresses and mouse actions.
Sometimes instead of flickering, the Alt-Tab display will simply fail
to appear and the same unresponsive X session results.

This seems to happen very frequently during the course of a day. When
it happens, my only recourse is to press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a text
console, log in, and run killall compiz and then DISPLAY=:0
metacity to kill the hung window manager and start a new one. (I
tried running DISPLAY=:0 compiz from VT2, but that doesn't seem to
start compiz in a fully functional manner.)

I'm reporting this from a system with an NVidia card, but I experience
the same thing on another system using an ATI Radeon HD 7970/R9 280X
  card, so I don't think it's video-driver specific.

Needless to say, this makes Unity pretty hard to use effectively.

Title:
titlebar-font does not scale on high-dpi screen

Status in Unity:
  In Progress
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
The titlebar-font appears to small in window titlebars, application menu and
indicators. Since all other fonts are consider the global scaling factor
automatically, the individual font sizes should not need to be changed.
  In the screenshot I have
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.titlebar-font=Ubuntu Bold 11 (the default).
When I change it to Ubuntu Bold 22, most titlebars and the application
title in the panel show the (originally) expected font size, but the
application menu and indicators still show too small text.

  org.gnome.desktop.interface.scaling-factor = 2
  org.gnome.desktop.interface.text-scaling-factor = 1.0
  org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.titlebar-font=Ubuntu Bold 11

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1282342] Re: compiz crashes with segfault after recent updates

2014-02-24 Thread Doug Smythies
I had the trusty daily iso from 2014.02.15. It installs and runs fine.
I'm saying that this issue was introduced on approximately 2014.02.16 or
2014.02.17
The bug 1283671 referred to above says 2014.02.21, but I think it was a few
days prior.

Title:
compiz crashes with segfault after recent updates

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 VM became unusable (unity shell) a few days ago, and
after some significant updates.
Things are fine after I log in and until I try to do something. Then compiz
will crash and my system becomes unusable. I do have sshd running and can
connect via ssh to re-boot or shurdown or get new updates are whatever.

(well, and as expected during the development phase, there have been
  issues.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283992] Re: Multi-monitor: wallpaper is corrupted

2014-02-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
** Description changed:

  Given this set-up:

- * Bigger primary screen (1920x1080)
+ * Bigger primary screen (1920x1200)
  * Smaller secondary screen (1600x900) to the right of primary screen

It seems that the outputs are swapped. I.e.: I get the wallpaper of the
smaller screen on the primary output, and the bigger one on the
  secondary (see attached screenshot).

The merge proposal for this work missed the feature freeze dealine by

This bug replaces the original FFe file under bug #878836.

  --- original description ---

We need to provide a thematically compatible lock screen and unlock
dialogs in Unity, consistent with the unity-greeter authentication
dialog used in LightDM. This will replace gnome-screenlocker.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage

2014-02-24 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Not so much CPU usage here, but leak is confirmed (I have the issue
since the release of 13.10 ...), at the end of they day memory usage
(according to top) is about 6-10% on a machine with 2Gbyte RAM. If I
kill the process, it relaunches and uses much less memory, below 1%, but
again it sightly increasing with time. So I have to kill it about some
times within a day to be able to work without heavy swapping. However
as I've told, not so much CPU is consumed here, I have no problem with
that at least. 13.10 on x86 32 bit.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

  mlaverdiere's futher addition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/comments/2

My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
*5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-
  design/+bug/733349/+attachment/3573380/+files/minimize.patch ).
Somebody should set up a PPA (and note it here) to make it easy to
  install the patched version.

connect via ssh to re-boot or shurdown or get new updates are whatever.

This bug report is being sent while logged on with GNOME shell, which
also has been having issues since January 17th, ( see bug 1273276 )
but there is a workaround that allows me to use it.

For the last few days, I see log entries in both kern.log and syslog
saying about compiz complaing about segfaults.

Everything was working fine for unity log in until a few days ago.

  issues.)

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 13.10 with the system compositor repos enabled and
so I believe I have 0.0.15 installed. Logging out and choosing another
user from the login screen (or the same previous login name) will
render the system pretty useless. Drawing of graphics seems to be slow
when this happens. One major issue is trying to click on the icons on
the side bar. It opens very slow but then quickly wants to retract
again. Bringing up programs takes an extremely long time after logging
out/logging in. closing out or minimizing programs causes almost a
  frame by frame close out.

The system I am using is a Compaq DC5100 computer with Intel 910GL Graphics.
This, again, only happens after logging out and then right back in...then the
problems start. Let me know if you need me to run any other tests.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283236] Re: Alarms are triggered in UTC tz despite saving in local tz

2014-02-24 Thread Renato Araujo Oliveira Filho
@Charles, I am saving the event time in UTC formart using:

ECalComponentDateTime *dt = g_new0(ECalComponentDateTime, 1);
dt-value = g_new0(struct icaltimetype, 1);
*dt-value = icaltime_from_timet(etr.startDateTime().toTime_t(),
etr.isAllDay());
e_cal_component_set_dtstart(comp, dt);
e_cal_component_free_datetime(dt);

since there is no way to convert the time to localtime at this point,
could you check if you can do that on the indicator.

Setting an alarm in the local timezone is not respected by the system
since the alarms is triggered in the equivalent UTC timezone.

  Mako build 200, 205

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Ensure that phone timezone is something other than UTC. For instance
eastern tz (UTC-5)
  2. Set an alarm for 3:00 PM in the ubuntu clock app.
  3. Indicator shows a pending alarm for 3:00 PM
  4. Check a minute or so later, indicator shows an alarm pending for 8:00 PM

  What happens:
The alarm does not go off at 3:00 PM. Instead it triggers at 8:00 PM

  What should happen:
The alarm is triggered at 3:00 PM

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2014-02-24 Thread Daniel Moore
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Ayatana design team, development team, whoever is in charge of
overseeing this subject!

I beg of you, in the nicest way i can possibly ask, please fix this
issue. This single issue is the bane of my existence, i cant seem to
adjust but i was able too in 12.04 BECAUSE it had this feature. This was
the key feature that made me turn away from windows and even mac because
it was a complete system, it had all the functionality that i needed to
be very very productive. I EVEN HAD ONE OF MY COLLEGE PROFESSORS TRY
THIS OUT, EVEN HE SAID IT WAS AMAZING! but now this feature is gone and
i find Ubuntu clunky and hard to use because of all the screen clutter
that exists. Like the bug description says, that design would be
perfect, but if that is too hard to implement, at least give us the
benefit of the doubt by just adding this feature to single windows
instead of a window stack. I can try to live with this and id be more
than happy to return to Ubuntu.

This shouldn't be hard to do since i had this implemented on a 13.04
install but it was buggy cause unity didn't agree with this modification
so ultimately it was unusable but regardless this feature would make
14.04 perfect. I know i speak for a lot of people when i say that this
would be ideal in terms of functionality. I already feel that unity is
nice in that it offers a different desktop experience but one that is
well thought out in terms of functionality, however this one simple
issue, to me, has caused its use to be difficult even new users find
it hard to use because they normally come from windows and mac and say
why doesn't the launcher minimize my app, that doesn't make any sense!
Then they tell me they don't like it and want to go back to windows,
myself included.

So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I will join a design team if i have to,
i will gladly contribute to this cause, i am a computer science graduate
so i know i can at least be of some assistance.

Also kudos on the integrated menu, i was amazed by that cause i didn't
think there was a way to make it better, but you continue to amaze. Now
if we can just get this one little tiny thing in there it'd be PERFECT!

Thank you Ubuntu team for all of your hard work in designing probably
THE nicest desktop environment in the world, and to make it even better,
its free! for this i thank you!
