[Dx-packages] [Bug 813409] Re: unity-panel-service uses CPU constantly when indicator-datetime is displaying seconds.

2014-04-20 Thread Robert Siemer
Confirmed for 14.04 trusty. – Better visible on the CPU impact on
compiz.

The bug is: panel-updates (seconds on the clock, or system monitor
multiload) use excessive CPU with unity. Netbook CPUs like Atom N270
need 5% for that... :-(

Bug description:
unity-panel-service is using a constant 1% of one of my cores on an
Intel i7-2600 according to top, while the desktop is totally idle.
When I switch to another VT, it makes no difference and unity-panel-
service just keeps using the CPU.

This obviously should not happen and will impact on battery life of
notebooks. Also, using the CPU constantly negates the power-saving
benefits of a tickless Linux kernel
  (http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/tickless/).

Update: Found the cause to be that my indicator-datetime is set to
display seconds, not just hours and minutes. This seems to cause
unity/compiz to send the SyncOne and SyncGeometries dbus messages to
unity-panel-service every second. And profiling unity-panel-service
with callgrind shows it is spending all it's time in g_variant_
fuctions, invoked by the dbus activity. So this needs to be optimized.
It's quite wrong that something happening only once per second should
  use so much CPU.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1310280] [NEW] hud and dash don't take keyboard input

2014-04-20 Thread Robert Siemer
Public bug reported:

Hud and dash (key Alt or key Super) appear correctly, can also be
closed with the same key, but I can't type anything. Sometimes one or
two letters can be entered (if I'm fast), but any further input does
absolutely nothing.

I've seen a bug related to ibus with same symptoms, but that one is
fixed (and my problem is not). Further I selected scim with im-config,
so ibus should not be running at all (but I see ibus related processes
on my system). Killing those does not solve the problem. SCIM is running
(but not activated), but killing it does not make hud or dash accept
keyboard input either. -- I see no other keyboard related problem.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1131385] Re: Always on top prevents application spread from working

2014-04-20 Thread Taihsiang Ho
gdb shows the if statement in launcher/ApplicationLauncherIcon.cpp goes to

398 Focus(arg);

instead of

404   Spread(true, 0, false);

the Spread method in line 404 is
what we expect to issue when clicking the launcher icon.
When we set one of the window as Always on Top,
the statement goes go the Focus method in line 398.

testing on 13.10 with
unity 7.1.2
7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1

NEXT: why it goes to Focus instead of Spread method

Bug description:
Consider you have many windows of the same type open. One method of switching
between them is clicking the launcher icon which reveals the application
spread. Now you can choose between the windows. This is how it should be.
However, the design idea was, if the windows are marked Always on Top there
is no need for an application spread, as they are always on top. This is a bug
and needs to be changed, because it does not consider minimized windows and
therefore prevents switching to those windows.
If you have windows of the same application open, some of them minimized and
ALL non-minimized windows are marked as Always on top, the application spread
does not work anymore, clicking the launcher does nothing. Whether the
minimized windows are marked always on top or not does not matter.
So the simplest way to reproduce this bug would be:
1.) Open two windows of the same application.
2.) Minimize one and mark the other (non-minimized) as Always on top.
3.) Try to switch to the minimized window using application spread

  menu:minimize,maximize,close] or [gconftool -s
  /apps/metacity/general/button_layout -t string
menu:minimize, maximize, close] enabled to change the window control to
the right. Now, in Trusty (14.04) even the unity-tweak-tool, which
still enables this option, isn't able to achieve the wanted result.

This is probably due to the new unity decorations.

The user should still have the opportunity to choose this setting (let
the user choose, whenever there are differences about user experience
preferences), if only because the XP support just ended and all these
new users don't want to have that much of a user experience difference
when going to Trusty (don't make the same mistake windows 8 did,
thinking users will adapt to UI changes - letting the user choose in
such cases is always the best option).

This is my first bug filing report, sorry if it doesn't fit the format
you are used to, feel free to edit it, but I think it really brings up
in important point that has to be addressed in a LTS release.

In 13.10 the artefacts reappeared more regularly than in 13.04. However,
moving the mouse over the launcher shows the correct icons and if the

new unity lock screen doesn't appear after resume

Status in Unity:
  Incomplete
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
New lock screen is awesome. Unfortunately, for me, whenever I resume,
I get a blank screen. I can switch VTs but switching to a text VT and
  back to X doesn't help. If I unplug and/or re-plug my external
display, I'll sometimes get a black screen with a mouse, sometimes a
lock screen that doesn't appear to be accepting keyboard input.

This has happened twice now, running current trusty and I've ended up
  rebooting each time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1310404] Re: Enabling the onscreen keyboard in the accessibility menu changes lockscreen design

2014-04-20 Thread Andrea Azzarone
We decide to fallback to gnome-screensaver if accessibility is enabled
because accessibility in the new lockscreen is partially broken. We'll
try to fix all the bugs in the next days so we can remove this
workaround. Marking as invalid for the moment. Thanks!

Title:
Inconsistent click-drag behaviour between global and local menus

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
With global menu in top bar, click (without unclicking) a menu and drag down
to choose a menu item.
Now enable locally integrated menus and maximise an application then do the
same.

I've observed the behaviour is inconsistent.

  With global menu: Menu opens
With LIM: Window detaches from being maximised.

This makes it slower using LIM as you can't click and drag down to
open a menu, you have to click/release then slide down and click
  again.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 968974] Re: Some free applications looks like paid applications with price 0.00 and with buy button

2014-04-20 Thread JaSauders
This seems to -still- be an issue on 14.04 with applications such as
Nitro Tasks and Steam... There hasn't been any discussion in quite some
time so I figured I'd make note about 14.04 in particular. It sure is a
confusing task when a new Ubuntu convert fires it up and realizes they
have to set up an account to log in to the service before purchasing
the free application they're intending to install...

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1285917] Re: Inconsistent click-drag behaviour between global and local menus

2014-04-20 Thread Owen Williams
It's very distracting to lose menu click and drag -- moving the window
should only be possible by clicking empty areas of the title bar.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1287663] Re: unlock from lancher not working

2014-04-20 Thread Eric Seidlitz
Hi I just installed 14.04 yesterday (clean install, previously was using
12.10). I am experiencing the same issue. When I right-click on an item
in the launcher, I get the options (usually just the application name
and Unlock from Launcher but for example, with Spreadsheet, I also get
New Spreadsheet). I can click on any of the other options and they
will work. But if I click on Unlock from Launcher nothing happens. The
dialog doesn't disappear either.
