Unassigning, I can't explain the choice because I'm not the one who took
it, but XI2.1 provides features unity need and is most distro nowadays,
that bug should probably be closed

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2014-09-01 Thread ThomasA
This happens on my computer too. Applications move to other desktops
after screen lock. I have two identical monitors in landscape mode and
2x2 virtual desktops. This problem appeared on my computer when I
installed 14.04 on top of a previous 13.04 install.

Bug description:
I run a dual monitor configuration, with one portrait and one
  landscape.

I nearly always have multiple applications open in multiple windows
across both monitors and all virtual desktops.

When I lock the screen and then unlock, my application windows will
  move from their original position.

  Sometimes they are in completely random positions;

Other times they seem to get the monitors confused, and rather than
being in the top half of the portrait monitor they are on the top half
  of the landscape monitor;

Sometimes it is only a new desktop, but the monitor position is the
  same;

Sometimes it is the same desktop, but on the other monitor.

  Description: Ubuntu 13.10
  Release: 13.10

What I expect to happen: When I unlock my computer, all the windows
are in the same position on the same monitor and desktop as I left
  them.

What actually happens: When I unlock my computer, some or all of the
windows have been changed to a random position on a random monitor
  and/or desktop.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2014-09-01 Thread Anton Piatek
mpt, that doesn't seem to me a reason why we can't have a drop down area for
legacy apps. Yes their behaviour will be unpredictable for Ubuntu but it would
still work for legacy apps.
I run a corporate repository for 6000 users and we are having to fix each unity
version so our corporate apps work, or we have to move to RedHat. The corporate
owners have no interest in fixing the apps for Ubuntu, and won't give out
source code, so they won't be updated unless they move to a new library which
does it for them (which is equally unlikely)

Anton: I'm interested in understanding the situation a little better:

  1. Internal applications originally targeting eg. GNOME 2, and you're now
needing to run these under Unity.
  2. Bought-in (external non-IBM) applications originally targeting eg. GNOME
2, and you're now needing to run these under Unity.
  3. Something else?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1364070] [NEW] utopic unity (7.3.1+14.10.20140811-0ubuntu1) launcher addition through gsettings isn't picked up

2014-09-01 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

As discussed on IRC, I tried to change the favorites key, and 3 trials
on 10 didn't make any change in what the launcher displays. seb128
reproduced it as well. (just be aware that we just create the .desktop
file just before).

The exact same code seems to work 100% of the time on trusty.

So, we:
1. create the desktop file
2. from gi.repository import GLib, Gio
gsettings = Gio.Settings(schema_id=com.canonical.Unity.Launcher,
path=/com/canonical/unity/launcher/)
then, get the favorites list and add the desktop file.
3. gsettings.set_strv(favorites, new_launcher_list)
- No launcher icon added from new launcher list.
However, a $ gsettings get shows that desktop file (which is present.
Note that changing the list and changing it back works.

utopic unity (7.3.1+14.10.20140811-0ubuntu1) launcher addition through
  gsettings isn't picked up

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
As discussed on IRC, I tried to change the favorites key, and 3 trials
on 10 didn't make any change in what the launcher displays. seb128
reproduced it as well. (just be aware that we just create the .desktop
  file just before).

The exact same code seems to work 100% of the time on trusty.

  So, we:
  1. create the desktop file
  2. from gi.repository import GLib, Gio
  gsettings = Gio.Settings(schema_id=com.canonical.Unity.Launcher,
path=/com/canonical/unity/launcher/)
then, get the favorites list and add the desktop file.
  3. gsettings.set_strv(favorites, new_launcher_list)
  - No launcher icon added from new launcher list.
However, a $ gsettings get shows that desktop file (which is present.
Note that changing the list and changing it back works.

This is similar to the bug described in:

But as that is marked fixed, perhaps this is something different.

A few times, I have been unable to enter my password until I had clicked in
the top right corner, and back into the password box.
I hadn't suspected anything serious, until today when I tried to log in, and
eventually got in, seeing that my password had been set to my web browser.

In addition, I've also had instances where I've had to enter the
password twice, and instances when I've come to the computer and it
appeared not to be locked, until I moved the mouse, and the lock
  screen displayed.

When the screen was locked, I went to click the password input box to bring
up the text cursor. When typing in the password prompt, no stars showed up to
indicate anything was entered into the password input box, and pressing enter
did nothing.
Eventually I logged in by clicking out and in the password input field to
re-bring-it-into-focus. I discovered that the text I entered into the password
box at first was sent to a friend in Steam chat.

Although it looked like the password input box in the lock screen had
focus and was accepting input, it was a chat window hidden behind the
lock screen that accepted the password input.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1245473] Re: Binding ctrl+shift, alt+shift, etc for switching keyboard layout makes shortcuts with ctrl+shift, etc not working in any program

2014-09-01 Thread Norbert
Ubuntu 14.04.1 with all updates, Ctrl+Shift as layout switch (English and
Russian).
I unable to use Ctrl+Shift+arrows for text selection and Ctrl+Shift+T in
Firefox, Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen in the following sessions:
* GNOME Session (Metacity)
* GNOME Session (Compiz)

All these shortcuts work as expected in Unity.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1280759] Re: Unity shortcuts (Super+A/F/M/C/V) do not work on non-latin layout in Trusty - shortcuts are defined via keyboard layout, not the keys

Bug description:
There are shortcuts to open lenses in Unity, for example Super + A
for App Lens, or Super + F for Files Lens, etc. There are also
shortcuts in the Launcher Super + 1 to 9 to launch apps from the
Launcher. These shortcuts don't work if the keyboard layout is set to
a non-Latin layout, in my case Persian, where almost all the keys are
  mapped to new characters.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
Add a new Persian keyboard layout to the system, in addition to English, via
keyboard layout indicator -- Text Entry Settings.
Switch to the Persian layout (by clicking on the keyboard layout indicator).
  Press Super + F.

  WHAT HAPPENS:
Dash is not open. Nothing happens.

  WHAT SHOULD HEPPEN:
The Files Lens in the dash should open.
The shortcuts should be associated with the keys on the keyboard, not to the
characters they are associated with (which depends on the active keyboard
layout).
When I am typing something in Persian, and I want to search for a file, it is
not reasonable that I should first switch back to the English layout before I
can use a particular shortcut.

This problem does not happen in some other apps like gedit or Firefox.

  COMPARE TO GEDIT:
  Open gedit text editor.
  Write something.
  Switch to the Persian layout.
Press Ctrl + S (the shortcut to save the document).

WHAT HAPPENS, AND WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN:
  The save dialoge box appears.

I think this problem happens for all keyboard layouts that don't use Latin
characters.
Layout-wise, when I press Ctrl + S while Persian layout is active, I am
typing Ctrl + س.
But keyboard-wise, I am always pressing the same keyboard binding.

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 11.10 RC x64, and have a AMD Radeon HD 6950 graphics
card and am using the open sourced graphics drivers.

After using unity for about 2-3 minutes, something happens to Unity
that causes it to visually break. The breakage is usually refined to
menu's and the desktop, and does not halt my usage of the system, but
it is very annoying and is a very large bug.

The breakage looks like horizontal orange and white bars spanning
across my screen just below the top bar. The Unity Dock icons are half
drawn and distorted, and all of the menu's and text have weird
artifacts embedded in the font. The artifacts look like random lines
and underlines and strike-throughs all over the text.

I have found things like alt-tab can break the desktop, if a window
hangs and fails to close properly it can break the desktop, adding
things to the Unity Dock can break the desktop. This has been
happening ever since I installed 11.10 during beta 1, and would love
to get this fixed by release.

I think this is isolated on Cayman cards, as I have my laptop has a
mobility radeon hd 4250 card with the standard Gallium drivers and it
  does not have this issue.

Launcher, Spread - Clicking on a Launcher app icon a second time to
  close a spread is broken

  To Reproduce:
  1. Open two Chromium windows
  2. Open Thunderbird, and open a new email window
  3. Click on the Chromium icon to focus one of the Chromium windows
  4. Click on the Thunderbird Launcher icon to focus the Thunderbird new email
window
  5. Click on the Thunderbird Launcher icon again to spread the two Thunderbird
windows
  6. Wait one second
  7. Click on the Thunderbird Launcher icon again to close the spread

  What currently incorrectly happens:
  - Nothing! The focus arrow jumps briefly but the spread does not close. Also
the App title integrated into the top bar is displaying the wrong application
name; it is displaying the name of the Chromium window however it should be
displaying 'Thunderbird' because this application got the focus in step 4 above.

  What should happen:
  - Clicking on the Thunderbird Launcher icon when the Thunderbird spread is
open should close the spread and return the user to exactly the same state they
were in before the spread opened (step 4).

A screencast of this bug in action is available at
  https://chinstrap.canonical.com/~johnlea/problem_closing_spread.ogv

To reproduce this bug read here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/893670/comments/1

  Workaround:
When the spread starts move the mouse pointer on a scaled window.

The default thru natty and until recently on 11.10 has been to pull all

The new behavior is to only pull from the current workspace if there is more
than 1 window of that group open, all other windows of that group on other
workspaces are ignored.

There were 2 related bugs in natty that opposed each other, the first one was
fixed (though not directly), and describes what is the default in natty and was

This one was the complete opposite, never fix released but is
representative of the current behavior -

Obviously only one can be the intended behavior - which one?

If it is now intended to only pull from current workspace than at the very
least you need to free up the key binding in the scale plugin for window

Obviously I believe it should pull all windows from ALL workspaces of the

This is visible in eg, shade and unshade animations where a slight

  Binary package hint: unity

In old unity (that uses metacity), once you vertically maximizes the
window, the title bar (where is title of the application, close,
minimaze, maximize buttons) moved to the upper panel to global menu.
In new unity (that uses compiz) this does not happens, and It should
happened, because it at least save space on widescreen monitors, that
are now pretty much common. The window is maximized (partialy), so

Snap-to-side windows cause dash to hide

Status in Unity:
  Incomplete
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm not sure of the correct terminology (or where this bug should be
filed) so feel free to update this to make it more understandable.

Basically, the problem is that dragging a window (in this case Deja-
Dup Restore dialog) to the right-hand side of the workspace in order
to snap it to the side of the screen (i.e. the blue box appears and it
nicely fits in on the right hand side), causes the dash on the other
workspace of the same level to auto-hide needlessly.

If you look in the screenshot, you will see on the top right hand workspace
the Deja-Dup restore dialog, snapped to the right of the workspace. In the
workspace to the left of that is a Firefox window. The dash on that workspace
automatically stays in its hidden state even though the firefox window is in
the middle well away from it.
Moving the Deja-Dup window off the right hand edge causes the Dash to remain
open.

  Does that make sense?

What information do you need from me to help debug and fix this?

I honestly can't fathom how Canonical could ship a beta product and call it a
LTS release. This computer was supposded to have been my work computer (a
System76 laptop). Now I waste time on working around, and reporting, grave bugs
in Ubuntu/Unity. Bugs that doesn't seem to get fixed. This is unbelieveable,
and I must admit that I have lost all love of Canonical and Ubuntu because of
this. I feel let down. My only hope for a stable OS now is elementary OS. They
have promised to ship only when they have something that actually works.

Bug description:
Ubuntu GNOME would like to transition for gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-
control-center 3.10. This however requires a transition to gnome-
desktop 3-10. I have been working on this for quite some time however
this work was essentially blocked waiting on the unity- forks for
settings daemon and control center. These were only finalised the day
  before feature freeze.

Right now there are quite a few features that are not available for
configuration in g-c-c given it is so old. We are also hitting some
odd bugs with mutter using its own display config separate to what
  gnome-settings-daemon is doing with xrandr.

For GNOME 3.10, all the display configuration/xrandr code has been
moved into Mutter as dbus interface. The Main reason for this move was
to abstract away the display server (x11/wayland). Apart from these
changes there were no significant changes in the API.

This affects gnome-desktop3 and gnome-settings-daemon. In particular
the changes in gnome-desktop would create a gigantic mess if we tried
to revert these changes for Unity only. As such have forked the
display config code from mutter and ported *-settings-daemon and
*-control-center to the new api. The code itself is fairly self
contained, so apart from the resulting duplication of code, it
shouldnt really be much of an issue.

We have tested this via a ppa, however it was hard to get extensive
testing, due to the amount of archive churn in the affected packages.
I am pretty confident there are no much regressions and I will commit
to fixing any issues to do appear.

  Essentially this transition will involve:
new displayconfig package: This is the relevant code forked from mutter
3.10.4 (with a couple of fixes from 3.11 backported), wrapped up in a daemon.
This gets autostarted when required by g/u-s-d (although dbus activation may be
broken in flashback session)
my upstream branch is at https://github.com/darkxst/displayconfig (I had
trouble working out how to import a git branch into bzr, but I imagine it
should live in bzr once approved)

gnome/unity-settings-daemon, have backported patches to adapt to the new API.
  Likewise for gnome/unity-control-center.
All other rdepends just require a no-change rebuild to adapt to the new
soname.

Assuming this gets a approved, subsequent FFe's for gnome-settings-
daemon and gnome-control-center 3.10 will follow.

Bug description:
CMake should make a library that we can link our tests to, rather than
us recompiling the source files multiple times.

This will speed up making unity by quite a bit, and make it easier to
test internal functions without having to fluff around with the
  tests/CMakeList.txt file too much.

I've been told that the existing shared object library can't be used
as it tries to do some compiz magic. What we should do is exclude the
file that does the compiz magic and create another shared library.

Bug description:
If I look for a folder using the Files Folders search, it will
find by default all the files inside the folder, but not the folder
itself, nor the included folders. If I filter on folders only, it will
display the included folders, but still not the folder itself.

So I see two problems here:

-the all files default option doesn't display any folder. I know
all files doesn't mean all files and folders, but I would search
on both, you don't always know how you call a file, so the more the
  better.

-the folder option doesn't show the right result: I would expect it
to display the folder i'm looking for, not only the folders included
in this folder. It seems that it shows only folders created after I
upgraded to Natty. Would it just be an initialisation problem of the
  index?

  ---

  Desired resolution:

  - If the search string contains all or part of the name of a folder, the
folder should be displayed (underneath the 'folders' category header).
  - The folders that contain the files in the search result should be displayed
(underneath the 'folders' category header), after any folders whose name
matches the search string.

Natty beta download from 6 April 2011
Presently operating on same boot CD after checked for errors in disk, using
the motherboard ATI Radeon Express 200 display driver.
I have had problems in the past because the Etronix display card doesn't
correctly report an EDID.

When I tried to boot with my 'normal' nVidia display card in the
system on the Natty beta CD burned from a download from Ubuntu.com,
everything seemed to operate normally until I got to the desktop
display. I just used the defaults, did not try to download
proprietary drivers, indeed didn't touch the keyboard after beginning
  the boot from the CD.

At the desktop, the display would show for a second, then go black for
a second, cycling endlessly. The only variation was that the display
when showing the background of the desktop would sometimes show the
Unity menu, sometimes the top bar, sometimes just the background, in
no sequence that I could determine, although I left it running for
about 30 seconds to see if it would stabilize. USB keyboard and mouse
had no effect. I got out by turning off the power.

Any further information which I can supply?

Bug description:
As part of the support for the flat review, it is required a way to
ask to the object his position [1]

This method can be used to ask for the position of the object in
absolute screen position or relative to the top level window where the
  object is placed.

There is a implementation of this method for Area, using his Geometry
  object.

The implementation supposes that the Geometry returns the absolute
position of the object, so in the case of the absolute screen position
the current implementation should work (I still need to fix that for
  the Window case).

But after a brief chat with Jay Taoko, it seems that it is not true
always, in some cases the Geometry of the object contains relative
position. So the options here are:

* Use the heuristic of the environment, and reimplement
atk_component_get_extents on any nux/unity object that would require that (for
that it would be useful to have a list of the object which behaviour is
different to the rule)
* Homogenize the meaning of the contents of the Geometry of a object

This bug was created in order to track the final resolution of this
  issue.

I put a fullscreen Thunderbird in my upper right workspace, a couple
of other apps in my top left, viewing my top left, I used the Monitors

raising, my Thunderbird moved into the upper left workspace.

When running rdesktop -f (full screen) the Unity desktop toolbars on

It is a repeatable problem and has persisted through updates.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In order to support payments in the dash, the payment preview for
music needs to be included in Unity. While it will initially be used
to support in-dash payments of Ubuntu One music store purchases, any
developer can use this payment preview.

In order to provide means to test this new feature the unity-lens-
scope will be updated so that it uses the PaymentPreview object
exposed by libunity that later triggers the use of the PaymentPreview
and MusicPaymentPreview within Unity. This means that once those two
components are update users will be able to perform purchases within
  the dash

Ubuntu One QA has tested this feature and the in-dash payments as a
  whole.

See http://youtu.be/QPjaR9ADyh8 for a short demonstration of the
  feature.

  Steps to test:

Assumption: Ubuntu One client setup on computer already.

   1. Open Dash and click on the Music icon
   2. Search for music you want to purchase and click on the album/track
   3. Click the Download button
   4. Click the Choose Payment Method link
   5. A browser Window will open and prompt for Payment Preferences
   6. Select Allow automatic payments and click the Update button
   7. Repeat steps 1-3
   8. Enter your Ubuntu One password when prompted and click the Purchase
button
   9. Payment will process and eventually show a notification about the
track/album downloading

To check that the purchase is on your account you can either:
  A. Open the Ubuntu One Control Panel, click the Explore button for
Purchased Music and see that the tracks/album are in that folder

  B. Open

https://one.ubuntu.com/files/#f=u%2F~%2F.ubuntuone%2FPurchased%2520from%2520Ubuntu%2520One
and the tracks/album should be found there

  Designed flow:

Assumption: UbuntuOne client setup on computer already.

  1. Open Dash and click on the Music Icon
  2. Search for music you want to purchase and click on the album/ track
  3. Click the ‘Download’ button
  4. Click the ‘Choose Payment Method’ link
  5. A browser Window will open for ‘Select your preferred payment method’

https://sites.google.com/a/canonical.com/dash/6-checkout/compact-version/4-user-logged-in-valid-payment-method-stored-however-the-user-wishes-to-change-the-payment-method

  6. Select the prefered payment method and fill out the form

https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/presentation/d/1KjJTXmkEIA1Y5I2sy3b-fWegfmPbBHdsgiMTkjU9qXk/edit#slide=id.gb83e9d0f_17

  7. Click the ‘Review order’ Button at the end of the page
  8. Review the order
9.Click the ‘Submitted order’ button at the end of the page
  10. The ‘confirmation page’ will be presented with the button to ‘play now’

I honestly can't fathom how Canonical could ship a beta product and call
it a LTS release. This computer was supposded to have been my work computer
(a System76 laptop). Now I waste time on working around, and reporting,
grave bugs in Ubuntu/Unity. Bugs that doesn't seem to get fixed. This is
unbelieveable, and I must admit that I have lost all love of Canonical and
Ubuntu because of this. I feel let down. My only hope for a stable OS now
is elementary OS. They have promised to ship only when they have something
 that actually works.

Status in Unity 7.2 series:

Bug description:
The launcher background is occasionally left without blur (see
attached screenshot). This is a regression after updating unity from
  version 6.2.0-0ubuntu4 to 6.4.0-0ubuntu1.

  Steps to reproduce:
Make sure that launcher is set to autohide and it's not visible.
  1. Open dash pressing Super
  2. Notice that the launcher background is not blurred.

This happens only when dash is opened pressing Super button. If
launcher happens to be visible prior to opening dash, for example
opening dash from BFB, the launcher background is blurred properly. If
you open dash by using lens shortcuts (Super+F for example), the
launcher background is blurred correctly most of the time.

Also, if the launcher background has no blur and you click something
with your mouse inside dash, the launcher background gets blurred.

I think this is somehow related to bug 1044926 because the launcher
background is never blurred if the dash is shown before the launcher.

Bug description:
While I reported this on Bug #751605, I think problem with resizing is
  different thing.

I have dual monitor setup with laptop on bottom and external monitor over the
laptop.
When I try resize any window on my bottom screen it crashes. Even when I add
seccond tab in Terminal, and window is automatically expands to fit the tabs
bar, it crashes after that.

I have to move that window to my upper screen, resize, add tab, and
then move it back to lower monitor.

When a file is dragged on the panel, only its associated application can be
raised and used with while the others are desaturated and useless.
This is too much restrictive. The desaturated effect is very useful but
should not prevent applications to be interactive.

For instance, if I drag a picture on the panel, I can only open it with some
graphical applications while one would want to insert it in a libreoffice
document or in a terminal or move it to home folder.
This is particularly relevant when the desired application is minimized or on
another desktop.

  WORKAROUND FOR 11.10:

None available. But an early fix is available for 11.10 in
  ppa:vanvugt/unity, https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/unity

  WORKAROUND FOR 11.04:

There are two ways to configure the primary monitor in Ubuntu 11.04...

Permanent workaround (requires logging back in again):
Edit ~/.config/monitors.xml, find the monitor you want the launcher to
display on and change:
  primaryno/primary
  to:
  primaryyes/primary
Now log out and log in again.

  Temporary workaround (no logout required):
  Open a Terminal window and...
  1. Run xrandr to find the NAME of the output you would like to make primary.
  2. Run: xrandr --output NAME --primary nohup unity --replace

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

  Binary package hint: unity

In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to
my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending
up on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two
  monitors.

This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen
application open on the laptop (hitting the upper left pixel of that
  monitor without going over).

I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor
the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the
monitors when determining where to put the bar.
