[Dx-packages] [Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock
We also have this problem on several machines, and I hope I can contribute to getting it fixed. Removing light-locker fixed the double unlock problem, but not this problem. The machine is a fully up-to-date Ubuntu 14.04 with LDAP authentication. The output of ls -l /sbin/unix_chkpwd is -rwxr-sr-x 1 root shadow 35536 Jan 31 2014 /sbin/unix_chkpwd I cannot post full auth.log because of personal data, but I will try to remember to grap the last lines of the log the next time the problem appears. The problem occurs only randomly and not very often (maybe once per week). It happens less often now that the double unlock problem is fixed, I guess simply because I have to enter my password less often now. A reliable work around is to switch to a text console, login as the same user, and run unity --replace. This restores the password input field. After unlocking, the panels are missing but I can fix this by opening a terminal window and running unity --replace there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. The suspend at Dec 5 13:10:16 was by closing the lid and that at 13:17:30 was by cog menu. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1078447] Re: Regression: New apps on the launcher have no shortcut key
Prettu sure is already fixed. Please confirm if so. ** Changed in: unity Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1078447 Title: Regression: New apps on the launcher have no shortcut key Status in Unity: Incomplete Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: This was solved in Precise (see bug #778499), but it's back in Quantal. If I open applications that are not pinned to the launcher, and if they are the last application on the launcher, they do not have a shortcut key associated with them (such as Super+0, Super+1, etc). This affects both the display and the input: the shortcut will not show if you hold down Super, nor will it work if you press it. The conditions required to trigger this bug appear to be: - The app is not pinned to the launcher. - The app is in the last position on the launcher (not including the workspaces, apps, files and trash). - No other apps have been closed since this app was opened. Obviously this is to be expected if there are more than 10 apps on the launcher, but this happens with less than 10. Therefore, example steps to reproduce are: 1. Ensure there are less than 9 icons open on the launcher. 2. Open Evince. 3. Do not open or close anything else. 4. Hold down Super. Notice that the Evince icon has not been assigned a number. 5. Press Super+n where n is the number you were expecting Evince to be assigned. Notice that it does not do anything. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit. That process will grow up to over 1.5 GB in a couple weeks and I'll have to reboot my machine just to reclaim memory. The cursor still kept moving with the movements of the mouse (it got stuck every once in a while), though the cursor arrow graphics got corrupted, but I couldn't click on anything. Keyboard didn't work too: I tried alt+tab and even ctrl+alt+F1 to access a virtual terminal, but keyboard input didn't produce any effect. CPU consumption was high, or at least the cooler fan was running fast. I had no choice but to force a power down. After that, after a new fresh boot, I clicked the Thunderbird launcher icon again and the same happened again There's probably some bug in Thunderbird triggering this, but if a single program can hang the whole system in an unrecoverable way something's wrong in either Unity, Xorg or Linux. This second time, I was able to switch to a virtual terminal with Ctlr+Alt+F1. Then I went back to normal screen with Ctrl+Alt+F7 and it fixed the issue!! (without doing anything from the terminal). After this, everything behaved as if the Tab key of the keyboard was continuously pressed (which it wasn't, ovbviously) and this got fixed by actually pressing and releasing it. (I guess when the system was not responding, the key press was received and the key released was not processed; this must never ever happen no matter how hanged the cpu is). The mouse cursor would get stuck every once in a while; I couldn't click and drag to unmaximize the current window. Alt+tab did nothing. The launcher wouldn't show up when moving the mouse to the left of the screen. After hitting Ctrl+Alt+D (show desktop) several times unsuccesfully, at the end the desktop partially showed up, with pieces of windows and garbage all over. The system dropdown menu on the upper-right corner wouldn't show up. The whole system was stalled. CPU consumption seemed to be pretty high but not 100% (I guess from the noise of the fan) I had to force a hardware power off. After a fresh boot, as soon as I tried to open Google Chrome, this seemed to happen again, but this time the system recovered from this state by itself. Actually I switched to a virtual terminal with Ctlr+Alt+F1 (because I couldn't open a terminal window in any way) but I only logged in and ran top without figuring out anything useful. Basically, I bring up the Dash, type my search string, then sit back and wait for the characters to appear on screen. Even though I've typed the entire string, the auto search is occuring before the first keystroke and between some (or sometimes all) keystrokes. The delays tend to be on the order of seconds. I have old hardware, which probably exacerbates the situation. One option would be to have the Dash frequently check for keyboard input and immediately interrupt and cancel whatever it's doing when a keystroke is detected. Alternatively, perhaps some way to either (1) disable the auto search completely until I press the enter key, or (2) have the ability to set a user-defined delay parameter that holds off on the auto search until after that much time has passed with no keyboard input in the search field. Note that I originally wrote this as a comment for bug #828582, but was instructed to open it as a new bug. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1399710] [NEW] no audible warning of high volume level
Public bug reported: Additional to the work done on bug 1373404, I think we need to consider adding an audio warning when the volume crosses the threshold value. The way android works is that the user is asked if they want to allow higher volume levels (they must click ok). Our approach is to just display a visual warning. That's fine (assuming it complies with all legal regs), but it isn't helpful from an accessibility perspective. Obviously folk can hear when levels become painful high, but how about we insert an audible warning when the user crosses the threshold? I'd suggest we do both of the following to indicate an audible warning: 1) Mute (or atleast lower) the currently playing audio streams. 2) Play two beeps in quick succession (at the original volume level prior to mute/lowering). Once the beeps have been played, the volume level will be restored to the appropriate (higher) level. ** Affects: indicator-sound (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to indicator-sound in Ubuntu. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1089010 Title: Keyboard shortcuts for lenses should be customizable in System Settings Status in Unity: Confirmed Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The keyboard shortcuts for opening the Unity dash to a specific lens should be customizable in System SettingsKeyboardShortcuts. This is useful for tweakers or for those who just want to see a list of what keyboard shortcuts are available (*discoverability*) [1]. Also, as we get more and more custom lenses, it's nearly unavoidable that multiple third-party lenses will try to use the same shortcut; the user should be able to manually fix that if desired. [1] Yes, there's the keyboard shortcut overlay but there won't be enough room for all shortcuts to be listed. Also, currently the overlay doesn't do high contrast so the System Settings view would be better for those who need high contrast. What we don't want is people needing to edit system files and have those changes lost whenever there are updates to that Unity lens. http://www.iloveubuntu.net/how-easily-add-preferred-keyboard- shortcuts-unity-lenses This can be done by adding the appropriate .xml to /usr/share/gnome- control-center/keybindings/ GNOME Shell puts their extra shortcuts (like 'Show the Message Tray') in the System category. And then the Unity lens specification would need to be updated so that developers use that method for keyboard shortcuts instead of the /usr/share/unity/lenses Shortcut= syntax. The mouse cursor still moves but it doesn't respond to clicks. CPU use goes relatively high, but not even close to 100%. And no disk activity at all. The system doesn't even respond to Ctrl+Alt+F1 (switch to virtual terminal). This has happened to me clicking on launcher icons of the Terminal in some occasions, and of Thunderbird on other occasions, so it doesn't seem to be related to any application in particular. THIS IS HUGE, this happens to me almost every day (sometimes more than once a day) This is similar to other issues I've reported recently but this is not exactly the same (actually I thought I _had_ reported this very one but I can't find it): - CPU consumption does NOT reach 100%, though it does go relatively high. I can tell because of the fan: when cpu is 100% it spins much faster; while in other issues I've reported cpu went to 100% (it was compiz) - the system becomes COMPLETELY unresponsive, not just _almost_ unresponsive, meaning that you don't have even the smallest chance to have a keystroke or click captured (well, or the chance is so much smaller that it basically never happens); and everything is completely frozen, it won't move the smallest bit after a while: for example the launcher won't ever hide - while in other issues I reported you would see things happening at intervals and very jerkily. - this alway at the precise instant I click on a launcher icon, while in other issues I've reported it happens randomly at any time, e.g. while typing. No more empty lenses. Status in Ayatana Design: Fix Committed Status in Unity: Invalid Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Ok, we now have 2 great lenses: music and video/film lens. However they show Nothing by default. They need to showcase some content to get the user interested. They have a lot of potential for getting the user to discover new contents (music, videos, etc.), like a sort of itunes. Content is king. Just imagine a News lens with no News... please lets try to avoid having empty lenses. Ideas: - Showcase some new and recommended / high rated contents from some online sources and/or U1 music store. Works best if shown both free and paid material, not just paid as the user gets used to using the lens. - Add a message / instruction so the user can add his/her library (if they have one), else make it easy (point them to the right direction) for them to start looking at building their own. = Desired solution: 1. For each of the Lenses implement the Content showcase (default view) as defined in the original Dash specification (extracts from this spec are cut and pasted below). 2. Once development of this basic 'default view' has begun, design will start working on a more advanced 'magazine showcase' style default view. -- Extracts from the original Dash specification: snip 2.2 Category Headers snip 2.2.2 Latency snip 2.2.2.3 Default view latency The default view latency is the time between the user selecting a Lens and the Lens being displayed. This latency should as close to non- existent as possible, ideally under 50ms. When a user opens a Lens for the first time, all Category Headers for which content is available should be displayed. Therefor to achieve the desired default view latency a small number of results for each Category Header should always remain cached. Two default view caches will need to be maintained, one showing all items including items which require a internet connection, and a second only showing items that are available locally. The Internet connection status will determine which of these cached default views are displayed to the user when they open a Lens. Note that although it is desirable to always display all Category Headers, there may be Category Headers which only display online content. These Category Headers will not be displayed if the user does not have access to an Internet connection. snip 2.2.3 Behaviours 2.2.3.1 Category Header default view When a user opens a Lens for the first time, content should be displayed underneath all Category Headers for which content is currently available. As the user has not yet entered any search term, the default view is a valuable opportunity to showcase content. The content showcased in the default view should also be periodically rotated. Each Lens can choose the most appropriate method of determining what content is surfaced in the default view and the frequency with which this content is rotated. To display the default view with no latency each Lens must cache content views. Two default view content results must be cached for each Lens to cover the internet connection available/unavailable use cases. One cached content result will include both local and online content, and the other will include only local content. 2.2.3.2 No content available for a Category Header If a Category Header has no content, the Category Header should not be displayed. This will frequently be the case when internet connectivity is not available, as some Category Headers will contain only online content. Another example is immediately after a fresh install when a user has no ‘Most frequently used’ applications. 3. Default Lenses snip App Lens 3.1.2 Content showcase (default view) rules The apps shown underneath the ‘Apps Available for Download’ category header in the default view should be rotated to showcase a selection of the most popular apps. One method of doing this could be to order the apps in terms of number of number of downloads from the Software Center in the past 7 days. This list could be updated weekly from the Software Center servers. snip File Lens 3.2.2 Content

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN: Windows should just grey out until responsive. WHAT HAPPENS: The launcher reveals and hides inconsistently even though the mouse is still hovering over it, making it nearly impossible to switch between windows or launch another app. It seems the launcher very frequently looses ability to feel that the pointer is still on top. A natural user response is to touch the edge several times to reveal it, ending up in seeing the launcher hiding and revealing frequently even when the user is doing something else afterwards. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1061792 Title: Memory Leak in Unity (Compiz) Status in Unity: Incomplete Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: There seems to be a memory leak in Unity that comes with use (not age). Hardware: ThinkPad W510 (nVidia Quadro FX 880M, driver 304.51), Core2 -Duo-based desktop with nVidia 560Ti (same driver) Software: Quantal Beta, up-to-the-moment updates, both 64- and 32-bit (one of each). *Note: I can *not* test with nouveau. Not only is it completely unsuitable for laptops due to terrible power management, but neither computer will boot with it - I get the PFIFO stuff, even though the -16 kernel was supposed to fix that. Steps to reproduce: 1) Log into Unity and launch System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor). Set to view all processes and organize by the memory column. Take note of the amount of RAM taken by the Compiz and Xorg processes. 2) Open a bunch of programs. I use: Nautilus, Gnome-Terminal, Chrome, Banshee, EasyTag, EasyMP3Gain, Empathy, Eclipse, and Rhythmbox. 3) Close all of the programs except gnome-system-monitor. Note the increase in RAM the Compiz and Xorg processes take. 4) Repeat steps 3-4. Memory on each process steadily rises. It isn't by a lot, but it creates an environment wherein the longer one uses one's Unity session, the less free RAM one has to work with (as neither process ever seems to give up any of its RAM, ever, not even after 10 hours of use). I don't seem to have any stability or performance issues stemming from this. ALSO: Opening the dash at all raises the RAM usage by a LOT, and subsequent openings of the dash (poking around, clicking on new buttons that reveal icons I haven't seen before, etc) also grows the process's RAM. By a LOT on the first run, but by a noticeable amount on later runs. *I* think this is a pretty high-priority issue, but as the RAM use and growth isn't all THAT large (~0.5/1 MiB every time steps 2-3 are repeated), I could understand if it weren't marked critical... but I think any leak is critical, so there's my bias. STEALTH EDIT: I want to point out that just leaving the system logged in does not cause Unity *or* Xorg to use more RAM over time. Not even with the indicator-multiload running. STEALTH EDIT #2: All lenses and scopes except the Application lens have been uninstalled, and do not factor into this. So I'm pretty sure we don't have a runaway call in any indexer or anything like it. --- ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal - Beta amd64 (20120926) NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: unity 6.8.0-0ubuntu1 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-17.26-generic 3.5.5 Tags: quantal third-party-packages Uname: Linux 3.5.0-17-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin plugdev sambashare sudo To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1061792/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~dx-packages Post to : dx-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~dx-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1301125] Re: Lock screen after idle time freezes unity
Can you give the exact compiz debug package? compiz-dbg does not exist, and following the wiki instructions can also not find the package: sudo apt-get install compiz-dbgsym=1:0.9.12+14.10.20140918-0ubuntu1 This is a quite serious issue to me, is there no other way to close the lockscreen from tty without killing the session and all work? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. My system uses fglrx provided by 14.04. When I lock manually the screen, I get no problem. I can even sleep the system without problem. However, when the screen is locked by idle time, I cannot unlock it. At this point, I can see the screen but with some kind of translucent panel over it. Mouse also works. I tried to type blink the password but I had no luck. I only get a working system by going text mode (ctrl+alt+f1) and restarting lightdm. No dmesg or Xorg logs seems to indicate any error. The title is Wine Window Program Loader instead of the proper application name. It can't be favorited since it will favorite the wine executable itself. And obviously different wine apps are all grouped under the same launcher icon. See also bug #635223 about Wine applications not showing up in the dash. - A way to fix this is to make all the Wine generated .desktop file to include a StartupWMClass value that matches the instance name of the related program (generally the .exe file name to be executed). So for example, a Mozilla Firefox.desktop file can be easily fixed adding this parameter: StartupWMClass=firefox.exe Wine should try to add this information at file generation time. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1399862] [NEW] SIGSEGV with module-remap-sink mixing to mono
Public bug reported: indicator-sound-service crashes with a SIGSEGV immediately when it's executed if I have a mono sink made with module-remap-sink in /etc/pulse/default.pa. This is the line that makes it crash: load-module module-remap-sink sink_name=mono master=alsa_output.pci-_00_1b.0.analog-stereo channels=2 channel_map=mono,mono I have never tried variations of that line, but I know that the sink works normally and does what it's supposed to do (mix the audio to mono), so I don't think it's a problem with it. If I comment it and restart pulseaudio, then I can start indicator-sound-service and it will work normally. I'm using Ubuntu 15.04. indicator-sound 12.10.2+15.04.20141105-0ubuntu1 (the most recent version as of now). ** Affects: indicator-sound (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to indicator-sound in Ubuntu.
