Title:
Full screen Qt windows don't get focus

Status in Unity:
  Incomplete
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The problem here is that when a Qt window/widget is shown by calling
QWidget::showFullScreen(), the resulting full screen window doesn't
get keyboard focus despite setFocus() being called. This is confusing
especially with games using only keyboard since the user needs to
  click on the window.

This is a bug in Unity, because the same code works correctly on
  Windows and Unity2D.

Test program attached. It opens a full screen window, which exists and
prints a message when it gets a key event.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Run the test program:
  $ qmake
  $ make
  $ ./FocusBug

  2) Press some keys.

  What should happen:
  - The program should exit and print a message Key pressed!.

  What happens:
  - Nothing, unless the user first clicks on the window.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1209510] Re: app switcher hidden

2014-12-19 Thread WoodyEckelzone
No, but now the `copy file dialog` is not showing at all in 90% of the
cases.

Copying from phone to computer no dialog

Coping from computer to phone no dialog but a small 2 in the app
switcher on the nautilus icon suggests a copy dialog, but I can't focus
it nor see it in the app switcher , it won't expand.

I have selected to have window menus in the window's title bar. This
works great, except for Qt apps. After selecting a menu item in a Qt
app that produces a dialog, the menu is no longer accessible. e.g.

  1. Start qtcreator
  2. Resize window so that it is not maximised
  3. Select 'Help' - 'About Qt Creator'
  4. Dismiss 'About Qt Creator' dialog
  5. Move mouse over window titlebar - menu is no longer shown.

The only way to get the menu back, is to switch to another window, and
then back to the affected app.

Note: This does not seem to affect the 'File' dialog from QtCreator -
I'm assuming this is because it loads the Gtk file dialog.

A recent change in the interest of security removed access to the
indicators when the phone is locked and the greeter is showing.

This was an accentual change based on a misunderstanding

There had been a plan to support media playback control via the sound
indicator. Without this the user must unlock the phone in order to
simply pause the music or change songs, etc.

  Desired resolution:

  - Revert the change that caused this issue

  - Add a switch to System Settings to enable security conscious user to
switch off Launcher and Greeter access while the phone is locked.
This setting should *always* be off by default.

Title:
Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

Status in Ayatana Design:
  New
Status in Unity:
  Incomplete
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In their efforts to make the Unity Dash the goto place for everything
you want to do, the developers have over looked 3 fundamental tasks
that a user might intuitively try to achieve with the unity dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
    - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
    - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)

I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving
  such tasks, but consider this:

That menu is not intuitively accessible via the keyboard. Try to access it
without your mouse! It might be possible, but if so, it is not intuitive. I
realized this today, when I encountered a bug where my mouse-cursor did not
appear after logging in to the Unity Desktop:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

  Additionally, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

There are clearly circumstances where it would be very nice to reboot
or shutdown your computer via the dash. As a matter of fact, I think
it would be my preferred method of achieving these task if it were
available. Instead of mousing to the gear menu (and clicking a menu
option), I would much rather hit the super key and type reboot or
  restart.

Granted, I could achieve this via Unity Alt-key menu, or by hitting
ctrl-alt-T, but you have to type sudo reboot (and enter your dang
password) to achieve this. I'd rather go the gear-icon-method than be
  required to type my password!

Therefore, this unity-dash method I'm proposing would be a nice
compromise. And, from an intuitive perspective, its simply an
oversight (everyone has ignored) that should have been there all
  along, respectfully.

Title:
Screen is stretched when using dual monitors

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I'm in dual monitor mode (not mirrored mode; mirrored mode works
100% fine), the applications are stretched, and my mouse clicks don't
line up with the applications. See the attached image. Notice the
highlighted text in the webpage near the middle of the two screens. My
mouse was where the red dot was when I made that highlight. (The mouse
doesn't show up in screenshots I guess.)

I was supposed to have the application menu bar on both screens, but
it and the menus only show up on the right screen. They work fine
relatively, though sometimes as dropdown menus close they momentarily
visibly stretch like the applications are.

  System information:
I was running Ubuntu 14.04 with the nvidia-331 drivers, dual monitor mode was
working great, but then in the last few weeks it started acting up like this
often. Probably related to some recent updates I guess. Logging out and back in
would sometimes fix it. I decided to do a full reinstall to 14.10, but now the
issue always happens.

The login screen and gnome-shell both work fine with dual monitor
mode. (I'll boot up my computer, see the login screen on my left
monitor with the background going to the right monitor exactly as it
should, I'll log in with Unity selected, and then it suddenly decides
to stretch everything ridiculously until I switch to single or
  mirrored monitor mode.)

I do not get this specific issue when I use the default nouvea driver,
but I do get tons of graphical artifacting and the screen freezes
eventually when I'm in dual or mirrored monitor mode (single works
fine), so that's not an option for me.

I'm currently using the nvidia-331 version 331.113-0ubuntu0.1 package.
I've tried downgrading to nvidia-331 version 331.89-0ubuntu5, and
adding the xorg-edgers PPA and upgrading to nvidia-346, but the exact
  issue persisted.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-19 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
My intent, in reporting this bug, is not to find a work-around for me
specifically, but is to propose a default behavior for the masses. We
want to maximize the user-friendliness to a brand new user of Ubuntu
Unity, without harming the work-flow of a seasoned professional.

This proposal is intended as a usability completeness, in keeping with
the goal of achieving tasks via the Unity Dash.

The designers of the Unity Dash, have taken great effort to allow new
users (and old) to achieve numerous tasks by hitting the super key and
typing a short phrase. They've designed several scopes allowing a user
find almost anything on their computer (and even scopes that search for
things on the internet).

So, it seems unusual to me, that (out of all the things you can do with
the dash) you cannot search and find such fundamental task as : logout,
reboot, suspend, or shutdown.

I'm proposing additions to the *default* dash lookup scope, that not
only make these tasks available (via the dash), but also activate the
corresponding alias-phrases mentioned previously:

  - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
  - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
  - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)
  - suspend/hibernate

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-19 Thread Paul Sladen
Lonnie: being familiar with the Design team (having worked in it…), my
suspicion is that this class of feature improvement often gets bogged
down for (very) long periods of time. Therefore a method that can be
deployed (or at least prototyped) immediately using existing external
mechanisms is far more likely to succeed and get deployed.

The example .desktop might not be the ultimate solution, but being
text files that are immediately deployable without needing system-level
privileges I would hope are something yourself, or anyone else, could
use for developing a fuller prototype and proposal.

** Description changed:

- In their efforts to make the Unity Dash the goto place for everything
- you want to do, the developers have over looked 3 fundamental tasks
- that a user might intuitively try to achieve with the unity dash:
+ This bug proposes the additional surfacing of power-management and
+ session actions directly within the Dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
    - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
    - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)
- - Suspend/hibernate
- - Lock
- - Switch User
+   - Suspend/hibernate
+   - Lock
+   - Switch User

+ Currently these user-initiates actions are presented via the Devices
+ (cog/gear-icon-menu), and can be accessed via the keyboard using either:

- I realize that the gear-icon-menu is the intended method for achieving such
tasks, but consider this:
+ 1. [Alt]+[F10] [Left] [Up/Down] [Enter]
+ 2. [Alt] Shutdown/Log out [Up/Down] [Enter]
+ 3. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] [Enter] (Log off only)
+ 4. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[t] sudo reboot [Enter]

- That menu is not intuitively accessible via the keyboard. Try to access it
without your mouse! It might be possible, but if so, it is not intuitive. I
realized this today, when I encountered a bug where my mouse-cursor did not
appear after logging in to the Unity Desktop:
+ (Note that Restart/Reboot can be access directly via these methods).

- Additionally, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option:
+ These methods are less likely to be found by the user than surfacing these
actions additionally within the Dash. This would help in cases were a
mouse/point is no longer available, such as mouse-cursor did not appear after
logging in to the Unity Desktop
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

- There are clearly circumstances where it would be very nice to reboot or
- shutdown your computer via the dash. As a matter of fact, I think it
- would be my preferred method of achieving these task if it were
- available. Instead of mousing to the gear menu (and clicking a menu
- option), I would much rather hit the super key and type reboot or
- restart.
+ This would also assist with ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

- ctrl-alt-T, but you have to type sudo reboot (and enter your dang
- password) to achieve this. I'd rather go the gear-icon-method than be
- required to type my password!
+ It is proposed by surfacing these options in the Unity Dash, that
+ finding the actions would be more intuitive, and would make the Dash
+ feel more complete as the defacto first-point-of-call for user initiated
+ actions.

- Therefore, this unity-dash method I'm proposing would be a nice
- compromise. And, from an intuitive perspective, its simply an oversight
- (everyone has ignored) that should have been there all along,

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-19 Thread Andrea Azzarone
Ok, I'm think the best place to fix this is in unity-lens-applications. We
don't need design feedback to do that.
I'll add that to my todo list, if you want to contribute let me know.

Title:
Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in Unity Applications Lens:
  Triaged
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This bug proposes the additional surfacing of power-management and
session actions directly within the Dash:

    - Reboot (restart is another good alias for this)
    - Shutdown (other intuitive aliases: shut down, turn off)
    - logout (aliases: log out, log off and logoff)
    - Suspend/hibernate
    - Lock
    - Switch User

Currently these user-initiates actions are presented via the Devices
(cog/gear-icon-menu), and can be accessed via the keyboard using
  either:

    1. [Alt]+[F10] [Left] [Up/Down] [Enter]
    2. [Alt] Shutdown/Log out [Up/Down] [Enter]
    3. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] [Enter] (Log off only)
    4. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[t] sudo reboot [Enter]

(Note that Restart/Reboot can be access directly via these
  methods).

These methods are less likely to be found by the user than surfacing these
actions additionally within the Dash. This would help in cases were a
mouse/point is no longer available, such as mouse-cursor did not appear after
logging in to the Unity Desktop
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

This would also assist with ctrl-alt-delete doesn't provide a reboot option
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403289

It is proposed by surfacing these options in the Unity Dash, that
finding the actions would be more intuitive, and would make the Dash
feel more complete as the defacto first-point-of-call for user
  initiated actions.

  Implementation possibilities:

1. Hard-code special-case actions into the Dash (requires Design review,
code and ship acceptance)
2. Implement as Dash plugin (requires code and ship acceptance)
3. Install additional .desktop listing the Name, Icon and Aliases in
/usr/share/applications/*.desktop (can be provided by a separate optional
package, only requires ship acceptance)

  Package: unity 7.2.3+14.04.20140826-0ubuntu1

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1366700] Re: Scrolling through windows of an application in the dash would hide always on top applications

2014-12-19 Thread Andrea Azzarone
** Description changed:

  To reproduce a problem:

- - Open a more windows of an application (for example a browser).
- - Make one of them always on top using the right click menu of the
window's titlebar.
- - Scroll through the windows using the mouse wheel over the opened
application's icon in the dash.
+  - Open a more windows of an application (for example a browser).
+  - Make one of them always on top using the right click menu of the
window's titlebar.
+  - Scroll through the windows using the mouse wheel over the opened
application's icon in the launcher.

  Result:

When scrolling through the windows of an app this way the next window
would show up, and also the previous window would disappear. This
happens with the window that was set to be always on top.

  Expected result:

The always on top application would stay always on top.

  Notes:

I can understand the logic behind the current behavior, but it is is
counterproductive. For example: There is an online todo list, which I
prefer to use. I usually move this todo webpage in a separate small
window, make that window always on top, and move it to the bottom right
corner of the screen. I would expect this window would stay always in
front of other windows, however scrolling through the browser windows
would not only move this window in the background, it hides it
  completely.

In my opinion scrolling through windows with the mouse wheel should
_only_ bring forward the next window, it should not hide other windows
(regardless if they are always on top or not)

** Summary changed:

- Scrolling through windows of an application in the dash would hide always on
top applications
+ Scrolling through windows of an application in the launcher would hide always
on top applications

Mouse focus takes precedence over default focus when opening dash

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
If the mouse cursor is located in the area where the dash appears when
it is opened, and happens to highlight an app/document/etc., this
mouse-highlighted action will be performed when pressing enter, rather
than the default action (say, opening the most recent app).

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Place mouse cursor in a location where it will highlight something in the
dash other than the default action
  2. Press keystroke to open dash (default: win-key)
  3. Press enter

  Expected results:
The default action is carried out (opening the most recent app or the first
app/document/etc. matching a previous search)

  Actual results:
The action highlighted by the mouse cursor is carried out.

Ideally, the mouse cursor should not highlight anything in the dash,
until the user moves the mouse. The current behaviour is entirely
counter-intuitive, especially if there is a previous search result (in
which case the search text is highlighted, further increasing
confusion, see also Bug #817436 which may or may nor be related).

Title:
vector graphic thumbnails blurry in dash on high-dpi screen

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Thumbnails used in the dash are blurry for small svg images. In
contrast to that the previews in the dash are specifically rendered
for the dash and show in correct resolution.

Nautilus is setup to display icons in 100% zoom level (default). In
Nautilus or on the desktop, svg thumbnails of 24×24px svg images are
smaller than the maximum available thumbnail area and are displayed in
screen pixels (which is very tiny, could also be a bug).

It appears the Unity dash looks up if a thumbnail exists for a specific file
in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal, chooses that thumbnail and stretches it to the
maximum available thumbnail area in the dash.
This makes vector graphics appear like they where raster graphics and look
very blurry.

If I understood correctly, there is a feature in Unity to open the
dash with a four finger tap. My touchpad seems to have sleezy finger
detection, because when I scroll with two fingers, sometimes the dash

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403542] Re: unity keeps last typed term in dash search

2014-12-19 Thread grinch
The real problem is that this decision was made uni-laterally. What some see as
a feature, others see as a flaw or bug.
There should be a way to disable this feature for those that find it a flaw.

I like the old way Unity/Dash search worked.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403293] Re: Unity Dash can't understand logout, reboot, or shutdown

2014-12-19 Thread Bruno Nova
It used to be possible to do this via the HUD (see Bug #1165420), but
not anymore.

I agree with making these options available from the Dash (the
Hibernate option could give some trouble because hibernation is
disabled by default; maybe, when disabled, it could open the Help
document on how to enable it?).

The best place for these options would probably be in a new System commands
scope (or in the Alt+F2 scope, if it was accessible from the Home scope and
from the normal Dash with the Super key).
But, for now (Unity 7), I agree with putting some .desktop files in the
Applications scope, and leaving a better solution for Unity 8.

(Note that Restart/Reboot can not be accessed directly via 1-3).

These methods are less likely to be found by the user than surfacing these
actions additionally within the Dash. This would help in cases where a
mouse/pointer is no longer available, such as mouse-cursor did not appear
after logging in to the Unity Desktop
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1403287

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1403542] Re: unity keeps last typed term in dash search

2014-12-19 Thread grinch
No one asked for configuration for every single thing

I only asked for a design change to be made a choice, instead of being
forced upon users.

Unity has made a decision to change dash's design and to force that
change to all users, even those who do not want it, and like the old way
better.

I will make a decision as well; Because of numerous bugs
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1403553
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1311316) in new
Unity version, including this one, I will switch to GNOME or other
desktop.

At least while Unity gets sorted properly.

You make close/lock this ticket. Thank you.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When scaling is set to a value different to 1.0 and the user performs a dash
search and right clicks a result, the Preview is always rendered with scale
factor 1.0.

  [Test case]
  1. From Unity Control Center - Displays - Change the monitor scaling to
somewhat
different from 1.0 (might be both bigger and smaller, your choice).
  2. Open the dash, [search something], right click over a result
  3. The preview items should respect the previously set monitor scaling

  [Regression potential]
This is a big change that involved lots of changes in the unity dash code,
although we
didn't notice any regression due to this change. At the contrary we improved
a lot the old code we worked on. Although it's still possible that some
component of the dash previews might be hidden/distorted or not shown as it
used to be.

2014-12-19 Thread EsAmo
I didn't change anything like that, though the problem does not appear
any more, fixed by updates or switching to xorg drivers.

Regards respect.

Yes. I realize this only happens when I also have ubuntu-desktop-next
installed. So probably the unity8 stuff breaks something.
