[Dx-packages] [Bug 1405725] Re: Focus stays on a program in previous workspace

2015-01-06 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Title:
Focus stays on a program in previous workspace

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When switching from workspace that has at least one open program to an
empty workspace, keyboard focus stays with the active program from
  previous workspace:

  1. Set the environment to use multiple workspaces (2x2 grid)
  2. Make sure that you have one workspace with one or more programs, i.e.
gedit, terminal, whatever, and another one without any programs
  3. Switch to workspace with programs and make active one of the programs,
i.e. terminal
  4. Switch to empty workspace, press enter or type anything on the keyboard
  5. Get back to the workspace with programs and you'll see that everything
typed on the keyboard went to last active program

I think that this shouldn't happend, focus shouldn't stay on a program
  from another workspace.

This may be a serious if, for example, I had prepared some command in
terminal, but I still didn't want to execute it before doing something
else, or if I accidentaly pressed enter in a browser window and did
something I didn't want (at least not yet).

I'm not sure if this counts as security vulnerability, but if not,
please remove that tag and sorry for labeling it that way.

  ubuntu-rtm image 184 on Krillin

Was using the phone a lot during the break and experienced Gmail
getting into a state where it would launch and have a white screen.
You could not recover even after killing and restarting the app. This
happened mulitple times. I believe the online account service possibly
is getting killed by the OOM killer and trying to launch Gmail after
  this occurs does not work.

If this is the case, we should a) try to not let account service be
killed by oom killer and b) recover gracefully if the service is not
running and still allow the app to be launced.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) setup online account for Google and Gmail
  2) unplug the phone from USB
  3) launch gmail webapp and a lot of other apps
  4) kill gmail but leave other apps running
  5) use the phone for a while and let it suspend for a while (5-10 minutes)
  6) try and launch gmail and you get a blank white screen, see the log below.
  7) kill and restart gmail with the same error

The only way I could make it work again was to delete the online
  account or reboot

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1364225] Re: Shadow applied inconsistently to windows that use XShape

2015-01-06 Thread Stephen M. Webb
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1354498

** Description changed:

- When using the XShape APIs*, windows that have a rectangular shape are
- treated like normal windows (they get a title bar and shadow) even if
- the rectangular region is much smaller than the window.
+ [ Impact ]

- When a non-rectangular window changes its shape to be rectangular, it
- gains a shadow that remains even after changing its shape back to be
- non-rectangular.
+ Non-standard windows of a non-rectangular shape end up with rectangular
+ shadows drawn behind them by Unity.

- Ideally there would always be a shadow that matches the shape of the
- window.
+ It is better to have no shadow at all for these windows rather than an
+ incorrect rectangular shadow.

- In the mean time, the correct behavior might be to remove the shadow
- whenever a shape is applied. If the application wishes to remove an
- applied shape, they could do something like:
+ [ Test Case ]

-   XShapeCombineMask(d, w, ShapeBounding, 0, 0, None, ShapeSet);
+ C code for a test case is attached to this bug. It needs to be compiled
+ and run to demonstrate the problem and solution.

- Please let me know if you need any more details, or if I'm missing
- something. (Unfortunately, the ubuntu-bug tool wouldn't work when filing
- this bug).
+ [ Regression Potential ]

- * http://www.x.org/releases/current/doc/xextproto/shape.html
+ Any code change to the Unity desktop shell could introduce a new crash
+ or hang.
+
+ A possible regression in this particular fix is a lack of shadows when

+ as before.

Bug description:
A maximized application's title bar does not merge into the menu bar
once a user has performed Super + W (window slide). Note that if one
does not do Super+E, then the bars to merge together. However, once
Super+E has been performed, this bug persists for the lifetime of the
windowed application. If the application is restarted after doing
Super+E, then the bug is gone. Thus, it seems like Super+E introduces
this bug for the lifetime of the windowed application.

Expected behavior: Maximized window's title bar is merged into menu bar.
Observed: Does not occur after Super+W is performed.

I have a macbook pro with retina display. In Ubuntu 14.04 64bit, every

It appears to happen to people with small HighDPI screens. In my case, it's
13 inch at 2560x1600.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1292218] Re: Lockscreen prompt missing hi dpi

2015-01-06 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Attached debdiff between trusty-updates and SRU.

** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
The lockscreen has correct Panel HiDPI support, but the prompt doesn't
  scale right now.
+
+ [ Test Case ]
+
+ (1) Using the System Settings, adjust the scaling for your monitor to, say,
1.88
+ (2) Invoke the screen lock by, say, pressing Super-L
+ (3) hit the shift key to bring up the lockscreen, observe the scaling of the
password prompt: it should be appropriately scaled.
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+
+ Any change to the Unity desktop shell could potentially introduce a new
+ crash or lockup: in this case, a crash could be a security violation.
+
+ [ Additional Info ]
+
+ The SRU for for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was cherry-picked from Ubuntu 14.10
+ where it has been in production use for some time without apparent
+ regression.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2015-01-06 Thread Páll Haraldsson
I had a new development.. Maybe I should report as a new bug? In case
this helps anyone as a workaround or to fix the bug I thought I would
post here:

I had the lock screen complain of the wrong password. I sure it was the
right one as I tried many times and eventually opened a virtual terminal
where the password worked (tried several times again in the lockscreen
to be sure) BUT instead of using the unity or compiz trick as usual I
found this process with ps -ef:

/usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service --lockscreen-mode

and killed it, then the lock screen would take the password. This might
be something for you to try I guess as as a workaround next time.. At
least when I restarted the old way, the desktop, that is the panel,
didn't quite work afterwards (at least the time disappears from the
panel), and I would restart after getting in to be on the safe side. I
might do that now also, but at least I do not seem to have any problems.

[This may not stricly be the same bug, but I guess the bug is in the
same program and I would guess both this and the bug in the subject have
the same root cause - memory at some point running out and making
trouble afterwards.]

Sometimes (but not always) after locking the screen there is the

Bug description:
When using the XShape APIs*, windows that have a rectangular shape are
treated like normal windows (they get a title bar and shadow) even if
the rectangular region is much smaller than the window.

When a non-rectangular window changes its shape to be rectangular, it
gains a shadow that remains even after changing its shape back to be
  non-rectangular.

Ideally there would always be a shadow that matches the shape of the
  window.

In the mean time, the correct behavior might be to remove the shadow
whenever a shape is applied. If the application wishes to remove an
applied shape, they could do something like:

XShapeCombineMask(d, w, ShapeBounding, 0, 0, None, ShapeSet);

Please let me know if you need any more details, or if I'm missing
something. (Unfortunately, the ubuntu-bug tool wouldn't work when
  filing this bug).

If you can reproduce this bug please be sure to provide the following info:
  1. Do you use a multi-head setup? If yes, using just one monitor fixes the
issue?
  2. Can you reproduce all the time?
  3. Do you use ldap? If yes, using gnome-screensaver fix the issue (see
comment #115) can you still reproduce that?
  4. Please consider posting /var/log/auth.log (at least part of it, should not
contain sensitive information)
  5. Please specify the unity version
  *** END IMPORTANT **

Sometimes (but not always) after locking the screen there is the
situation not having any input field where I can type the password to
unlock the session again. The shaded gray area simply does not have
the input field. I can't do anything, I have to switch to text console
and stop/start lightdm service to cure the problem loosing all of my
  session :(

firefox icon frequently replaced by placeholder

Status in Unity:

  Confirmed

Bug description:
Several times over the last week I have noticed that the when I start
firefox, the default icon is replaced by a grey square with a question mark in
the center as shown in the attached image.
The only fix I've found is to unlock firefox from the launcher, quit the
program, search for "firefox" in the dash, manually drag the icon onto the
launcher, and then open it(i.e. if I start firefox directly from the dash, the
grey icon appears on the launcher again).
I haven't noticed this occurring with any other program.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2015-01-06 Thread Justin Ossevoort
I don't understand why this issue is not being picked up. It should
probably be considered a security bug, because it prevents people from
using the software updates.

I know my way around apt manually, but people that don't will be missing
their much needed security updates. And for every person that bother
reporting this issue here there are probably dozens that don't and are
oblivious of the update problem.

Bug description:
Update manager is showing up in the dock but I can click on the icon
all day and nothing happens. Similarly if I do Super-S or Super-W it
  doesn't show up anywhere.

Even if I alt-tab to the application nothing shows up. This happens
only when update manager runs on its own. If I kill it and then launch
it myself it comes to the foreground just fine.

I'm not 100% sure whether this is a unity, compiz, or update-manager
bug but so far my bet is on unity.

  =Original Report=
Bug #877444 is showing again in latest updates, please re-open it. This is
the exact same problem.
