[Dx-packages] [Bug 1414230] [NEW] v14.04 screen garbled upon restart with external monitor
Public bug reported: I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Acer Aspire One 722. Everything works fine on the laptop by itself. But if I connect the laptop to an external monitor (a HDTV in this instance) via a HDMI cable, the display on the laptop screen and on the external monitor work fine: 1) until I close the screen of the laptop while the laptp is still on, let it go to sleep, and then open the screen and restart. At that point the laptop and external montor screens are black with some garbled characters. There is no way to recover the laptop but shut it down and perform a cold boot. 2) and continue to do so if I use the suspend command (from the drop down menu from the top right corner of the screen). The laptop and the external monitor go dark when the computer suspends. Upon waking both the laptop screen and the external monitor work fine. Needless to say closing the lid after using the suspend command makes no difference. Any clues on what could be happening when I close the lid of the laptop to suspend the laptop? [Dx-packages] [Bug 1313446] Re: window disappears on toggle shade
DATA LOSS: I would like to up vote this because I have in-directly experienced data loss by having a window with input (email) that I went always on top and then shadded. My email disappeared. I had no way to get back to it unless I clossed the browser windows that were visible... only then did it re-appear. HOWEVER, that window had lost connection to my server at that point, so the data was lost. I would like very much for this to get fixed. The Always on top and shade feature has long been a strong point for my linux use and workflow. Unity has grown a lot and I now uaually find it the DE I prefer to work in unless I need shaded windows and so forth... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. Basically, it's super easy to move your pointer fast and hard to the extreme edge and corners of the screen, so you can hit targets placed there quickly. But the global menu only activates if the cursor is a pixel or two from the top of the screen. This is a massive usability bug. The example from the 90s (yes, 20 years ago) is that Win 95's start button was offset from the bottom left corner by a couple of pixels. That made it hard for people to hit, and if they'd only put it flush with the bottom left it would have been way way easier to click. Hence snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - e.g. in this post from 2000 http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog63.html Hopefully this is an easy fix: extend the mouseover activation area for the global menu to the top of the screen. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1371590 Title: Global menu bar snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, à la Windows 95 Start button Status in Unity: Expired Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: There is a really old usability bug relating to mouse accuracy, which Ubuntu 14.04 has rediscovered in its global menu. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1413929] [NEW] switching monitors scrambles windows on virtual desktops
Public bug reported: I am using my laptop in two ways: stand-alone and connected to an external monitor with a different resolution. I have configured 6 virtual workspaces (3 horizontal, times 2 vertical). Each time I switch from one to the other (which is about 5 times a day), windows are moved to other workspaces. This is highly annoying since I keep like to keep certain windows in certain workspaces. Not only are windows moved, also the Window-spread (super-w) is confused and shows windows which are not on the current workspace. Also switching from window to window (alt-tab) can make windows be moved to another workspace sporadically. All this tends to stabilize once I move some windows back to where they belong, but when I switch monitors again or hibernate: Bam! Chaos again. I'll have to try other window managers. As of now, this is pretty much unusable for me. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1413790] Re: It's possible to bypasss lockscreen if user is in nopasswdlogin group.
In fact, the User Accounts applet in the Settings allows creating a user with no password by putting it in the nopasswdlogin group, but as soon as the screen lock comes up, the user is unable to unlock the screen. So the screen lock definitely needs to honour the nopasswdlogin group, and this is a bug with no real security implications. ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu.
