I tried to install a more recent version of xserver as proposed in other
comments but my touchpad stopped working so I went back. I'm on a Dell

Maybe related, the cursor does not always show the correct image scale

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1436538] Re: brigtness slider should not allow total darkness

2015-04-18 Thread Joseph Wakeling
@Matthew I guess I was assuming that the reset-all-system-settings
option could be provided via the boot options available after pressing
the power+VolUp buttons (I'm assuming here that the secondary menu made
available when pressing VolUp during the recovery boot is not suitable,
as it looked like that was part of the Android stack, but might be
wrong).

  Windows slow/stall/freeze when minimizing/restoring/etc in Unity 7

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in X.Org X server:
  Confirmed
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

   * Minimize current window or alt-tab between windows
   * Reveal launcher to click on application
   * Click `Super` to bring up Dash
   * Hold `Super` to bring up Keyboard Shortcuts

  What should happen:

  Action completes smoothly and quickly.

  What happens instead:

   * Action may be slow / animation jerky.
   * Action may stall (animation frozen on given frame, e.g. window partially
minimized) - initiating another action cancels first action and second action
may succeed (most often calling Guake with F12 seems to solve the issue)
   * Action may freeze - cursor no longer moves - a soft reboot
(Alt+PrtScr+REISUB) usually works, otherwise a hard reboot

  Notes:

   * Not application specific. Minimizing is reliably slow/stalls with
minimizing Firefox (including 29, I do not have a lot of bookmarks) or Pidgin,
but I use those programs more often.
   * I am using an Nvidia Optimus machine with the default Nouveau driver - no
`nvidia-prime`, no Bumblebee. I temporarily installed the latest stable Nvidia
driver (including `nvidia-prime`) and it made no difference.
   * I did not experience this issue on the same machine running 13.10 (with
Bumblebee).
   * I am running Maximus.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308800] Re: Unity doesn't respawn all the times on crashes

2015-04-18 Thread Neal McBurnett
It is now a year since this bug was marked Critical, but it keeps
being postponed. I think this was part of the cause of an embarrassing
experience during my recent presentation to a Linux Users Group, where
Unity went away twice, forcing me to reboot the first time, and borrow a
(gasp!) Apple computer the second time to finish the presentation.

What is the status of the overall fix?
What is the story with the fix released aspect of this for gnome-session?
Was that just one aspect of the fix?
When it is fixed, will it be backported to Trusty?

Thanks!

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Killing compiz repeatedly doesn't make unity to reload all the times.

This is caused by the fact that due to a regression unity7 is not
loaded anymore by upstart (but by gnome-session) and thus it seems
that sometimes it doesn't properly gets restarted.

This is also a security issue, because if the session was locked, and
unity is not reloaded the session won't be locked anymore.

  [Test Case]
From a terminal run killall -9 compiz multiple times, it should always
reload, but it fails after a couple of times.

  [Regression Potential]
The fix is about always making unity to be launched by upstart.
Regression potential is low, since upstart is now used by most ubuntu desktop
applications, and it ensures compiz will run properly anyway.

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 14.10, the mouse cursor graphic gets corrupted under certain
occasions. It then looks flipped, sheared or shows fragments of a
  previous cursor.

  * when switching the cursor them forth and back in Gnome Tweak Tool
  * when dragdropping a document icon

Maybe related, the cursor does not always show the correct image scale
on a high-dpi display (this was working right in 14.04). For example
after login, or when hovering specific areas, or on mouse down to
start a dragdrop, the cursor appears 1/4 the expected size.

Attached is a photo of a corrupted cursor (whereas a screenshot with
  Gimp showed the uncorrupted cursor).

  Notifications turn the screen on

Bug description:
  Built: r20

When getting a notification, such as a text message, the screen will turn on.
This becomes a problem when the device is kept in a pocket,
where it may falsely register screen activity and thus stay on for hours.
