Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 15.04 neither Totem nor VLC are able to
select different audio tracks or subtitles when playing videos with
multiple tracks. This is a regression from Ubuntu 14.10 where playback
of such files was working as expected. I tried this on multiple
machines running 15.04 and with various media, mostly MKV videos but
also AVI videos or simply DVDs.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1430059] Re: Many options in various menus appear greyed out, inaccessible

2015-04-29 Thread Guillaume M-M
Dear bug tracker,

The bug appeared after the following commit in indicator-appmenu:

Attached is a patch against the latest revision that narrows down the issue.

Developers more familiar with lyx or indicator-appmenu might be able to
tell whether the commit exposes an earlier bug of LyX (for instance
forgetting to register some signal), or whether the bug is in indicator-
appmenu (in that case feel free to adapt my patch).

In particular, by looking at the comments in the source, I am not sure
that the path taken to update the menu, before this commit, was at all
intended. Also, symptoms of this bug include the fact that there is a
small delay before the menu is updated, and Scott Kostyshak mentioned
that the callback Menu::updateView() in lyx was in fact called twice.
This hints at a deeper bug either in lyx or indicator-appmenu. It would
be nice to solve all at once because it has made lyx feel sluggish ever
since indicator-appmenu was introduced in Ubuntu.

Thanks!

In the meanwhile, the proper workaround is to run lyx with the command line:
  QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR=1 lyx
or equivalently to adapt /usr/share/applications/lyx.desktop as follows:
  Exec=env QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR=1 lyx %F

** Patch added: "a minimal working solution -- not meant as a final patch"

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-29 Thread Christopher Townsend
Maybe just installing the ddeb for the compiz packages is enough to get
a decent stacktrace.

If you don't know how to do this already, then please follow the
instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash#Non-built-
in_debug_symbol_packages_.28.2A-dbgsym.29 on adding the ddebs archive to
your sources.list. Once that's done, then install compiz-core-dbgsym,
compiz-plugins-dbgsym, and compiz-plugins-default-dbgsym and try it
again.

Hopefully, we can get a better stacktrace. If not, then I'll think
about about how to get this darn stacktrace.

Bug description:
New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

  Dear Ubuntu users and developers!
Please include the following information to your comment about non-latin
shortcuts problems:
  1. What Ubuntu version do you have (Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.10 GNOME, Ubuntu
14.04, Ubuntu 14.04 GNOME and so on), upgraded (describe version) or clean
installed
  2. What keyboard layout do you have
  3. What shortcut for keyboard layout switching do you use
  4. On which session you have problems - that is one from Unity, GNOME Shell,
GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Metacity), GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Compiz)
  5. With which program and its version and origin (Ubuntu repositories, PPA,
non-deb binary package from some website) you have problems.

By providing this information you can make bug-fixing much simpler and
  may be faster.

  --
For other layout switching problems introduced in Ubuntu 13.10 you can see
bug 1218322.

2015-04-29 Thread Jakub Nietrzeba
SIGILL looks like sirens call of executing data segment after hitting
some null at execution path. Problem must be somwhere else. I can
reproduce it every time (at each login attempt) and I'm not affraid of
compilating packages from the sources. If I can help somehow (maybe some
usefull gcc flags, some codeguard library?)

Yes, that is a NULL address. I tried sending a SIGILL to compiz on my
test system and I got a valid stacktace out of it. I really wish we
could at least get something useful out of your dump.

Bug description:
  Problem:
If user receives an SMS/call, snap decision for incoming SMS/call stays on
screen for always only 60sec. and then disappears from screen (by default).
There was no interaction from user.

  Possible solution:
The snap decision should stay on screen for the amount of time the app asks
it to, being always app dependant.
A 60sec. time-out is too short due to use cases where an action from user is
mandatory.

Use case example: A class 1/2 SMS arrives after user triggered a USSD
command from dialer. These type of SMS always requires a response from
user (CANCEL or a further COMMAND). Thus a timeout of only 60 sec is
too short because it can be missed and these type of SMS is NOT saved
  into the usual messages thread.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-29 Thread Jakub Nietrzeba
I can try, but it does not looks like it can be upgraded. This laptop
works fine on 14.10 and does not seems to be supported by Toshiba
anymore.

For me most interesting in call stack is this:

#4 0x

it's NULL, istn't? It looks like there is some callback, thread or
signal catcher which is not initialized correctly, it is called and bad
things happend. I'm not sure is this even traceable, maybe there is some
compilation option which could help catch such jumps?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-29 Thread Christopher Townsend
Well, I've looked at the crash dump and I'm not sure what symbols gdb
can't find. I've loaded debug symbols for compiz-core and it still
complains, so I'm at a loss.

I have been reading up on what the kernel trap means and basically it's
saying that a process is performing something the hardware doesn't like.
In cases like these, the driver is supposed to tell Compiz if something
is supported or not, but apparently it's not. It's possible that the
newer drivers are making an assumption about the underlying hardware.

Your BIOS may be outdated which may fix some issues. Is it possible to
try to update the BIOS on your machine and see if it helps?

I missed your comments about having tried this on a LiveCD:)

Great, thanks for the crash file. I'll see if I can glean any useful

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-29 Thread Jakub Nietrzeba
I was sure that it was caused by nvidia graphics, removed it but problem
persisted, blamed configuration and brought in livecd and the same
problem appeared. I can reproduce it on LiveCD, so in a moment I will
attach crash file.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1170647] Re: After minimizing an external media, clicking on the "Files" icon on the Launcher doesn't restore the minimized window, but opens a new one

2015-04-29 Thread Peter Roos
Indeed, the bug is still present. Interestingly, it wasn't present in
the beta version one month ago in a virtual machine installation - or at
least I couldn't trigger the bug with neither Trash or a USB stick.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE

  1. Connect a removable media to the computer.
  2. On the launcher, click on the "Files" icon.
  3. On the left sidebar, click on the removable media icon or the trash.
  4. Minimize the window.
  5. Click on the "Files" icon.

  EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR

  - The Files window to be maximized.

  REAL BEHAVIOUR

  - A new window is opened.

  RELEVANT DETAILS

  - One way to navigate between windows at this moment is to use the
"control + tabulation" key combination, or to click again on the
"Files" icon so windows are exposed.

Otherwise the minimized window Can be restored by clicking on the
Volume's launcher icon or scrolling on the Files icon

  **
   SOLUTION
  **

  WORK-AROUND

  - On the launcher, left click on the "Files" icon and select the
  "unlock from Launcher" option.

  FIX

  - The launcher icon for "Files" to be treated the same way as if it
  was unlocked.

  REGRESSION POTENTIAL

  - Clicking on the "Files" icon won't send the user to its home folder,
but to the latest opened Files window.

Bug description:
Presumably Unity, or in general the user interface of Ubuntu 15.04
(Vivid) suffers severe performance drops. To be more precise, when my
system happens to be in this state, every animation, like moving
windows, opening menus (fading in/out), or opening the dash is very
choppy (I would guess 5 FPS, but I didn't perform proper
measurements). I could not find the triggering element, although I
know that closing some windows will solve the problem, after which I
can reopen those windows, and have normal frame rates. In Compiz
Config Settings Manager, I already set the refresh rate to the correct
value of 60, and disabled refresh rate detection. I believe that from
the attached data it's clear that I'm using the latest nvidia drivers
  provided by Ubuntu.

Bug description:
I asked this question already on Askubuntu, but was directed to file a
bug: I have a nice Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 11 AMD Neo II with a ATI
Radeon 4225 integrated graphics device. In my perception this is
already a not-so-lowspeced device, but still a netbook.

Up to Ubuntu 12.04 precise pangolin I preferred Unity2D over Unity
mainly because it did perform much better than Unity and moreover I
was able to achieve 5-6h with one battery charge. The typical load of
an idling desktop settled around 0.00 to 0.02.

Yesterday I tried the new Beta 2 of Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal: This does
no longer offer a Unity2D version. The performance itself has
definitely improved over Unity in precise, but nevertheless I do
experience now a minimum load of 0.24 to 0.36 while completely idling.
According to top this is mainly due to compiz eating about 3-6% CPU
  all the time.

In comparison to my Unity2D experience, quantal is more sluggish, eats
much faster my battery and produces significant more fan noise. I
already tried a few tweaks like static blurring, fast texture renderer
or choosing alternate window manager on precise, but without a
  significant change.

Are there ways which enable me to continue to use Ubuntu/Unity on my device
without major loss of functionality, performance and battery life?

When trying to page down or page up in the Dash it never works.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1.) press Super+A
2.) expand the "Installed" category so that all installed applications are
viewable, resulting in lots of rows of icons
3.) press the "Page Down" key with the intention of advancing the view of
icons down one page. Nothing happens. The "page down" key will not move the
view down one page.

Please make it so that "Page Down" and "Page Up" work in the dash so
users can use these keys when looking at lots and lots of icons.

  --
  Desired Solution:

  - When the Dash is open the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys should scroll
  the Dash up and down.

(note this behaviour was specified in section "2.4.2.2 Keyboard
navigation" of the original Dash spec.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-29 Thread Christopher Townsend
If you feel comfortable doing so, could you please attach the Compiz
core dump for when this occurs? It may help give us some clues about
what's going on.

Also, it appears you had the nvidia binary driver installed at one time
and now you are using nouveau. I'm wondering if there is still some
cruft left over from the nvidia driver causing this issue...

Thanks!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1314587] Re: Windows slow/stall/freeze when minimizing/restoring/etc in Unity 7 (14.04 and 14.10)

2015-04-29 Thread Juan Simón
I use Ubuntu 14.04 64 bits with NVidia propietary drivers (downloaded from
Nvidia website).
I have the same problem only when nautilus manages desktop. The workaround for
me is "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false".

  Windows slow/stall/freeze when minimizing/restoring/etc in Unity 7

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in X.Org X server:
  Confirmed
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

   * Minimize current window or alt-tab between windows
   * Reveal launcher to click on application
   * Click `Super` to bring up Dash
   * Hold `Super` to bring up Keyboard Shortcuts

  What should happen:

  Action completes smoothly and quickly.

  What happens instead:

   * Action may be slow / animation jerky.
   * Action may stall (animation frozen on given frame, e.g. window partially
minimized) - initiating another action cancels first action and second action
may succeed (most often calling Guake with F12 seems to solve the issue)
   * Action may freeze - cursor no longer moves - a soft reboot
(Alt+PrtScr+REISUB) usually works, otherwise a hard reboot

  Notes:

   * Not application specific. Minimizing is reliably slow/stalls with
minimizing Firefox (including 29, I do not have a lot of bookmarks) or Pidgin,
but I use those programs more often.
   * I am using an Nvidia Optimus machine with the default Nouveau driver - no
`nvidia-prime`, no Bumblebee. I temporarily installed the latest stable Nvidia
driver (including `nvidia-prime`) and it made no difference.
   * I did not experience this issue on the same machine running 13.10 (with
Bumblebee).
   * I am running Maximus.
