Title:
  UI volume warnings need revision

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in indicator-sound package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
As raised in OEM bug #1474364 (the title there is poor), the warning
scheme used by Ubuntu does not currently follow the letter of the EU
regulations for mobile devices (it seems to follow the spirit).

Design have now reviewed the regulations (bug #1480912), and propose:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#limits

  This is the diff:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound?action=diffrev2=146rev1=145

The UI notification scheme needs to be updated to match the new
  design.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1483388] [NEW] Boot gets stuck at purple Ubuntu .... screen forever if running from battery

2015-08-10 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

I am not sure at all what package this bug is; I report it against Unity
because I get to see the purple screen...

Steps to reproduce:
- turn on the laptop while not connected to AC power, but with more than enough
battery charge (tested with battery completely charged)

Expected result:
should boot fine

Observed result:
When the purple Ubuntu loading screen appears and the four dots below the word
Ubuntu are all filled in red, the system gets stuck at that screen for
fucking ever.
No matter how many times I retry, it will always remain stuck there.
If I connect the charger and reboot, then it works fine.

This REGRESSION has appeared after some recent automatic updates. This
didn't use to happen before. I had booted with battery power thousands
of time, though it's not something that I do very often so i can't tell
exactly when the regression appeared.

Before the purple screen appears, for a fraction of a second I've been able to
see a black screen full of messages, probably error messages, while normally
(when boot works fine) there would only be one usb-related error message.

Please let me know from which log I can retrieve those error messages so
that I can post them here.

Don't tell me to update the bios, because this used to work on the very
same machine, so the issue is obviously in Ubuntu.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1483427] [NEW] Possible to manually set display brightness to 0 on Ubuntu Touch

2015-08-10 Thread Stefan
Public bug reported:

Possible to manually set display brightness to 0 on Ubuntu Touch

It is possible to move the brightness slider to the very left position,
which will set the display brightness of affected device to zero, or, to
total darkness.

This is a bug, since this leads to user's inability to set the brightness back
or, generally, to operate the device.
There is a slight chance, though, to return the brightness back to non-zero
value (blindly, trying by user's memory).

Also, this gets even more problematic, if we think about a scenario, where such
Ubuntu device is locked by a PIN.
User has to try to unlock the device on the dark screen, open the top panel
with settings, scroll to the far right (to access the brightness settings), and
then trying to hit the correct slider - all on a dark screen.

This happened on Aquaris E5.

** Affects: indicator-power (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I'm noticing this as an issue as well. My scenario is in using Fabric or

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1483205] Re: unity-control-center needs bluetooth packages

2015-08-10 Thread Robert Ancell
This is because unity-control-center needs the GSettings schema from
indicator-bluetooth and schemas need to be installed otherwise the
control center would crash. Otherwise indicator-bluetooth would just be
a recommends.

A solution would be to make an indicator-bluetooth-schemas package that
just contained the schema.

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 14.10, the mouse cursor graphic gets corrupted under certain
occasions. It then looks flipped, sheared or shows fragments of a
  previous cursor.

  * when switching the cursor them forth and back in Gnome Tweak Tool
  * when dragdropping a document icon

Maybe related, the cursor does not always show the correct image scale
on a high-dpi display (this was working right in 14.04). For example
after login, or when hovering specific areas, or on mouse down to
start a dragdrop, the cursor appears 1/4 the expected size.

Attached is a photo of a corrupted cursor (whereas a screenshot with
  Gimp showed the uncorrupted cursor).

However, although this was through decision, apparently there are

[Dx-packages] [Bug 623804] Re: Enable users to configure on the previous 'shutdown timer' feature

2015-08-10 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
In interaction design we have an awkward word, workflow. It's used for
the steps you go through to do something, even if that thing has nothing
to do with work.

At first sight, the countdown seems to offer better workflow, because
for some people at least, it replaces a confirmation with an undo. You
can trigger the command, go away, and come back within a minute to undo
your decision if you change your mind.
http://alistapart.com/article/neveruseawarning

Unfortunately it often doesn't work, because of something that happens
at the end of the workflow. If you happen to have any app open that asks
for confirmation before it quits -- most commonly, if an app has any
unsaved documents -- that confirmation will happen *after* the
countdown, when you might not even be there to see it. So your session
will stay wide open until the screen lock kicks in, which is a security
problem. Those confirmations can't happen before the countdown, because
if they did, apps would be quitting before you even saw the shutdown
prompt, including when you'd chosen the command by mistake, which is
precisely the problem the prompt exists to prevent.

This will happen more often to some people than to others, but it's
unlikely that there's any correlation between how often it happens to
you and how willing+confident you are in changing system settings. For
example, nobody commenting on bug 548415 even mentioned the possibility.

So, I don't think a setting can improve things. Someday, if even PC apps
routinely save state and documents constantly, they won't need to put up
save-changes confirmations any more, so we won't have to worry about
those showing up at the end of the timer, so we can reintroduce the
timer for everyone. But not today.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1467595] Re: cursor sometimes disappears on XPS 13 9343 and external monitor

2015-08-10 Thread Cyan Ogilvie
This happens to me too on a 2015 Lenovo X1 Carbon, up-to-date vivid.
When it happens (usually after resuming from a suspend, but sometimes
during normal usage) the trackpoint, trackpad and touchscreen all still
work and UI elements highlight when the cursor is over them, but the
cursor itself is invisible.

Sometimes suspending and resuming fixes the issue but usually I have to
reboot or restart lightdm. I don't know if the cursor would start
working again after a few hours, I can't afford to lose that amount of
work time to find out.
