Title:
Indicator icons do not appear after upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10

Status in indicator-application package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading from 17.04 to 17.10 all the indicator icons (Steam,
InSync, Google Chrome, Hangouts, Slack, etc) are missing.

A temporary workaround is to kill indicator-application-service, but
this only works until the next reboot.

Bug description:
The appmenu-qt5 code has hardcoded Xlib calls that cause Unity 8 (or
any other Qt-based applicaiton) to die on startup when run on Mir
  instead of X11.

This library extension should either not hardcode X11 (preferred) or
check for the presence of a $DISPLAY environment variable and avoid
  code paths that assume X11.

The Unity 8 desktop currently has a hard-coded check for
$QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME and unsets it as a workaround.

Bug description:
These projects are discontinued, unsupported and should be removed.

I haven't done any analysis of the deps or rdeps to find out if there
is more to cull, or if there is some untangling to do.

I know of two tasks other than removing packages -

Unity ships an Amazon launcher in its preset favourites which
launches a binary from unity-webapps-service. That should be removed.

We need to keep providing the Amazon launcher by default (in GNOME
Shell) - it should be reimplemented and added to Shell by default.
