[Dx-packages] [Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks LTS 12.04 14.04

2015-01-09 Thread Benjamin Kerensa
Other commenters have indicated this happens in other browsers to and
the OP specifically pointed out the leak is in Unity not Firefox as such
marking this incomplete for Firefox unless someone can substantiate that
this is really a Firefox bug which is unlikely.

Bug description:
unity-panel-service and hud-service quickly racks up memory and CPU
usage until I kill it when invoking the HUD on Firefox. It's taking
anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, but it sometimes makes
  the system completely unusable.

  1. run Firefox 12.0 in the foreground
  2. hit Alt to bring up HUD
  3. type any text
  4. select one proposal from HUD
  5. wait for unity-panel-service and hud-service to fill up the remaining RAM
and swap space.

This is due to a high number of bookmarks in a user profile
  (hundreds).

  organization (as described on Wikipedia):

Obviously, despite some improvements that have came late in the 12.10
development cycle, there are still serious privacy concerns with the
unity shopping lens. To be more precise, here are the main problems
to be fixed according to EFF:

  - Disable Include online search results by default.

  - Explain in detail what Canonical does with search queries and IP
addresses, how long it stores them, and in what circumstances it gives
  them to third parties.

  - Make the Search Results tab of the Privacy settings let users toggle
on and off specific online search results, as some users might want
Amazon products in their search results, but never anything from
  Facebook.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1166124] Re: Ubuntu minimum system requirements needs to be updated

2013-10-27 Thread Benjamin Kerensa
@Svetlana

How is this issue fixed? I still see low-end system requirement specs
which would not provide a user friendly experience on Ubuntu. I suggest
we ask the Ubuntu Desktop or Community Team to look into this and
provide us with more specific system requirements that would give a
basic experience.

I know the specs currently offered would not cut it.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1166124] Re: Ubuntu minimum system requirements needs to be updated

2013-10-27 Thread Benjamin Kerensa
@Alan or @Michael Hall,

Could one of you brief the doc team as to what a reasonable base system
requirement for Ubuntu is... Has Canonical done any benchmarking and
user testing to try and find a good match on system reqs?
