Bug description:
On Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy, when i switch to the Greek layout, i cannot type any
greek character to the Dash's search field.
The pointer does not move at all, which means that it is not just an
appearance problem, but there is no input at all of the character.
The same applies when i try to use the "Execute command" field that appears
when pressing the Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut.
This has only to do wiith greek characters, as other characters that are not
related to the keyboard layout (such as numerical characters, dots, comas,
hyphens etc) can be typed normally regardless of the keyboard layout setting.

  ** Workaround **
  In the terminal:
im-config -n xim

  Then reboot!

The unity first_run.stamp file should not be in XDG_CACHE_HOME. As it
is a _cache_, it can be ephemeral. Rather, it should be in
XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Once the keyboard shortcut list, for example, has
been presented, I don't need to be told about it again, even if I need
  to purge my ~/.cache directory.

This is a problem at our site, where XDG_CACHE_HOME is stored on a
temporary filesystem, to cut down on the tremendous amount of useless
network traffic between workstations and the user's file server. As a
result, users now have to learn about Unity keyboard shortcuts on

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1237132] Re: Change Show Desktop ALT-TAB option label when this option is in the state where it will reverse the prior show desktop action.

2014-08-13 Thread Brandon Schaefer
This is simple enough. It would also be nice if we changed the icon,
though i've no clue what it should look like. Its just easier to tell
the difference between an icon vs small text.

If I were to sit next to you at your computer, put my arm around your
shoulder and ask you: Show me the Desktop

What would you do? Load up a Firefox window? What if I asked you again
  Show me the Desktop

Would you do something different than, say, show the desktop?

Thusly, when one selects Show Desktop with ALT+TAB I propose either:

  1) Show the Desktop and only the desktop, no matter the state.

  Or:

  2) Change the state from Show Desktop to Show Open Windows.

  Thank you for your consideration.

  --
  Desired solution:

  - First see the description of bug #966030

  - When the user is in the 3rd state described in the description of
the aforementioned bug (e.g. they have just used the 'Show Desktop'
function to minimise all their windows, and have not opened or
restored any new windows after doing this), if the user goes to the
'Show Desktop' option in Alt-Tab, the title should be changed to
'Restore Windows'. The action that is performed when this option is
selected should not change, the only thing that should change is the
  label in this state.

  - If possible, it would also be good to change the tooltip of the
Launcher Show Desktop icon when in this state if possible, but if not
  no worries.

Bug description:

  - If possible, it would also be good to change the tooltip of the
Launcher Show Desktop icon when in this state if possible, but if not
  no worries.

As a
result, users now have to learn about Unity keyboard shortcuts on
  every single login.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1154451] Re: Windows Startkey only works when an application is open?

2014-08-11 Thread Brandon Schaefer
This is most likley caused by a bad nautilus not running the Desktop
window. This window needs to be open other wise compiz wont get any
keyboarde events since no windows are present/focused. Make sure
nautilus is running, and when you are on an empty desktop that the top
panel reads Ubuntu Desktop and the top panel has drop shadow. If you
dont have this then nautilus is not running in desktop mode.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1152467] Re: Icons Missing In Dash

2014-08-11 Thread Brandon Schaefer
All unity does is reads the *.desktop file. If the app is not starting
then its the *.desktop file that comes with that app. I would check out
/usr/share/applications/ and look for those desktop files and ensure the
Exec section is correct. Theres nothing we can do about bad desktop
files in unity.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1349858] Re: Cannot override certain key combinations involving Super

2014-08-11 Thread Brandon Schaefer
This is somewhat problematic. As compiz gets the events, checks if it
uses that shortcut. If it does then it eats the event and its done. If
it doesn't eat the event it gets sent to gnome control center (now unity
control center i think?). Which then gets to the right shortcut.

So the only way to get this to work correctly, is to go in ccsm
(compizconfig setting manager) and change the shortcut in unity plugin
to not open photos scope when you press Super+C.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1313885] Re: lock screen bypass

2014-04-28 Thread Brandon Schaefer
I can get the dash to pop up (which is an issue), but I cant input
anything into the dash. It goes to the input for the lockscreen.

Either way, the command lens shouldn't be popping up.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Killing compiz repeatedly doesn't make unity to reload all the times.

This is caused by the fact that due to a regression unity7 is not
loaded anymore by upstart (but by gnome-session) and thus it seems
that sometimes it doesn't properly gets restarted.

This is also a security issue, because if the session was locked, and
unity is not reloaded the session won't be locked anymore.

  [Test Case]
From a terminal run killall -9 compiz multiple times, it should always
reload, but it fails after a couple of times.

  [Regression Potential]
The fix is about always making unity to be launched by upstart.
Regression potential is low, since upstart is now used by most ubuntu desktop
applications, and it ensures compiz will run properly anyway.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Now with a fix for LP: #753938 being merged into raring, this presents
a new usability challenge to users.

  The issue:
When you open a trash window from the launcher and minimize it, it gets
minimized into the Nautilus icon.
However, a user would then expect to get the window back by clicking the icon
where the window minimized into in the first place,
in this case, the Nautilus icon in the launcher.
Instead, it opens a new Nautilus window.
The issue here is that trash windows and every other Nautilus window are only
seperated logically from each other, but not visually.

  The fix:
When minimizing the trash window, instead of minimizing into the Nautilus
icon, it should minimize the window into the trash icon in the launcher.
I'm purely talking about the minimize animation and triangle next to the
trash icon here.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1294885] [NEW] [regression] Launcher Super+Num Fails in French keyboard

2014-03-19 Thread Brandon Schaefer
Public bug reported:

When in the French keyboard layout 0-9 are Shift + Num, which we
switched over to use key_sym to support num pad.

We need to move back over to key code so the french keyboard layout
doesn't need to do Super+Shift+Num to get the same results.

No first run tutorial for Unity/Ubuntu

Status in Ayatana Design:

Bug description:
What should be done by design (approved by JohnLea):

The first time an user access to his session, the Shortcut Hint should
be prompted to the user, and it should fade out at the first user
interaction (mouse button or key press).

-

  Summary:

When a user first logs in to an Ubuntu install, they are just dropped on the
desktop with no prompts on how to use the system. A new user, say someone's
grandmother, could have _no clue_ what to do.

  Proposed solution:
  ===
Given that Ubuntu / Canonical is focusing on expanding their userbase, I
propose that a tutorial is shown every time a new user logs into Unity for
the first time (EDIT: perhaps some sort of slideshow with an animation on each
page -- see first comment with attachement).

This tutorial will point out the BFB, the launcher, notification area,
settings manager, and where to go to log out. On top of this, it
should be audiovisual to make it as accessible as possible. If the
user doesn't want to go through it, it should be a simple click to
  close the tutorial.

This will set Ubuntu above the standard of other operating systems by
ensuring that not only is Unity usable and intuitive, but that it is
helpful in giving users a basic understanding of how to use it. Not
everyone's brain works the same, and Ubuntu is about making computing
accessible to everyone. I've heard too often I didn't want to do
anything in case it messed something up, and it's scary doing
something new on the computer. A tutorial will give users the
confidence to use their computer without fear of breaking something.

Bug description:
When the screen is locked while a window is in fullscreen, the
lockscreen is nearly fully transparent, like shown in the attached
  screenshot.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Make a window fullscreen (e.g. your browser)
  * Lock the screen using the keyboard shortcut

A normal user wouldn't even notice the screen is locked, it looks more
like the UI froze while locking (that's what I thought too, until I
tried if I could still enter my password).

!-- I sincerely apologize for the following --
  rant
Seriously, I appreciate the work done here and love the new look, but this is
the 6th bug I found in the new lockscreen (the screenshot also subtly shows
this fact). I don't think the new lockscreen can be shipped as it is, not with
that much usability/security issues. I know it's in proposed, but since UI
freeze is tomorrow and final freeze is less than a moth away, I feel the need
to voice my opinion on this.

Dash/Hud stays open in front of the lockscreen

Status in Unity:
  Fix Released
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When you lock the screen while the dash is open, the dash stays open
in front of the lockscreen. It's still possible to enter the password
and unlock normally, but the dash looks like it had focus.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Open the dash (home, run command or hud)
  * Lock the screen using the keyboard shortcut

The result is illustrated in the attached screenshot. I think the dash
should close upon locking, or remain open in the background (I can't
remember how it worked with the old lockscreen, but I think it would
  just close).

No first run tutorial for Unity/Ubuntu

Status in Ayatana Design:
  Fix Committed
Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
What should be done by design (approved by JohnLea):

The first time an user access to his session, the Shortcut Hint should
be prompted to the user, and it should fade out at the first user
interaction (mouse button or key press).

-

  Summary:

When a user first logs in to an Ubuntu install, they are just dropped on the
desktop with no prompts on how to use the system. A new user, say someone's
grandmother, could have _no clue_ what to do.

  Proposed solution:
  ===

Looks like the overall region is getting shown before it adjusts to
paint the nice overlay boarder. Interesting that only the tooltip
reproduces this issue. Been trying to reproduce this for a while now...
