Title:
  Old indicator items are not removed, just hidden

Status in indicator-applet package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in indicator-applet source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  In Focal the indicator-applet (12.10.2+20.04.20200409-0ubuntu1)
  contains a bug that can cause duplicate icons to appear in the applet.
  When an application which creates a notification item is closed, then
  the indicator applet will just hide its item and not remove it. If the
  application is started again, a new item will be added to the applet,
  but the old item is still present (just hidden). When the panel is
  moved or otherwise refreshed, then all items will be made visible
  again, causing many duplicates.

  The required fix is included in https://bazaar.launchpad.net
  /~indicator-applet-developers/indicator-
  applet/trunk.14.04/revision/451 and needs to be back ported into the
  new SRU release.

  For more details see this merge request:

https://code.launchpad.net/~lanoxx/indicator-applet/fix-duplicate-icons/+merge/390344

  [Test Case]

   1. Open an application which adds a notification item to the indicator
applet. Examples for such an applications are VLC, Network Manager Applet, or
Skype.
   2. Close the application and reopen it.
   3. Hold Alt key, then move the panel which has the indicator applet to an
different edge of the screen.
   4. Observe that new two icons of the respective application are visible
(e.g. to VLC icons).

  [Regression Potential]

   * The regression potential is minimal. The only user of this package are the
GNOME Flashback packages. The biggest impact this change could have is that
indicator applet items behave incorrectly, which is not worse than the current
situation.
   * I have tested this patch for several weeks now and not found any
regressions.

  [racb] The code path being changed is the signal handler that fires
  when indicator items are removed. Regressions may manifest if this
  code path is exercised in some unexpected way.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1898477] Re: Old indicator items are not removed, just hidden

2020-10-18 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Hi Sebastian!

I noticed that on Ubuntu Groovy, indicator-appmenu is behaving
incorrectly. It shows a menu for the application, but only until some
dialog is opened. For example:

1) Start LibreOffice Writer — there will be a menu;
2) Open the About dialog — the menu will disappear (correctly);
3) Close the dialog — the menu should be back but it isn't (in Unity session it
works fine).

That may be related to this change. Can you please test this case when
you will be verifying the fix?

If it's really related, then we will need to reject this change.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1711204] Re: Remove ubuntu-ui-toolkit from the archive

2017-08-17 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
@Dimitri: url-dispatcher has quite a lot reverse-dependencies itself:

* address-book-service  (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* indicator-bluetooth   (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* indicator-datetime(for liburl-dispatcher1)
* indicator-keyboard(for liburl-dispatcher1)
* indicator-network (for liburl-dispatcher1)

* indicator-sound   (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* indicator-transfer-buteo  (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* libertine-scope   (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* qtmir-android [amd64 arm64 armhf i386]  (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* qtmir-desktop [amd64 arm64 armhf i386]  (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* ubuntu-application-api3-desktop [amd64 arm64 armhf i386]  (for
liburl-dispatcher1)
* ubuntu-application-api3-touch [amd64 arm64 armhf i386]  (for
liburl-dispatcher1)
* ubuntu-printing-app   (for liburl-dispatcher1)
* ubuntu-ui-toolkit-autopilot [amd64 arm64 armhf i386 ppc64el]  (for
url-dispatcher-tools)
* unity-greeter-session-broadcast  (for url-dispatcher-tools)

I am not sure what to do with i.e. qtmir-* — I guess we don’t want these
to be removed? Maybe fixing the QML file will be easier?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1711204] Re: Remove ubuntu-ui-toolkit from the archive

2017-08-16 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Looking at url-dispatcher, the only use of ubuntu-ui-toolkit is in this
small QML file: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~indicator-applet-developers
/url-dispatcher/trunk.17.04/view/head:/gui/url-dispatcher-gui.qml

Does Unity 7 need this GUI? If no, let’s drop it; if yes, I can port it
to Qt Quick Controls or rewrite in C++.

Bug description:
  # Impact
  This affects all Qt applications that use
QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable, in Unity environment. Confirmed
examples are owncloud-client and keepassxc, but there may be more applications.

  # Test Case
  See the original description below for the test case in C++.

  # Proposed Fix
  The proposed fix is identical to what was uploaded to Yakkety as version
0.3.0+16.10.20160628.1-0ubuntu1. The fix is using unique connections for all
AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon instances.

  # Regression Potential
  The fix is in Yakkety since June and in Zesty, and nobody complained so far.
So it should not cause any regressions.

  -
  in appmenu-qt5 in ubuntu 16.04, the AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon assumes
there is only one instance of a QPlatformSystemTrayIcon: it register the same
dbus name for all the instances. In fact, there is one instance of
QPlatformSystemTrayIcon per instance of QSystemTrayIcon, and one temporary is
created for QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable.

  This breaks the owncloud client [issue
  https://github.com/owncloud/client/issues/4693 ]

  This example reproduces the problem:

  ```
  #include
  int main(int argc, char *argv[])
  {
  QApplication a(argc, argv);
  QImage img(64,64, QImage::Format_ARGB32);
  img.fill(Qt::red);
  QSystemTrayIcon sti(QIcon(QPixmap::fromImage(img)));
  sti.show();
   QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable(); // with this line, the
QSystemTrayIcon does not appear
   // comment the previous line to see that the QSystemTrayIcon works and
that there is a bug in that line
  return a.exec();
  }
  ```

  This testcase shows that the
  AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon::~AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon  called
  by the temporary object created inside
  QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable unregisters the icon.

OK, starting the stable release upload procedure then.

They are not related, but a fix will be available in the next upload
(first in 17.04, then can be backported to 16.04 if it works).

Bug description:
  in qppmenu-qt5 in ubuntu 16.4, the AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon
  assumes there is only one instance of a QPlatformSystemTrayIcon: it
  register the same sbus name for all the instances. In fact, there is
  one instance of QPlatformSystemTrayIcon per instance of
  QSystemTrayIcon, and one temporary is created for
  QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable.

  This breaks the owncloud client [issue
https://github.com/owncloud/client/issues/4693 ]

  This example reproduces the problem:

  ```
  #include
  int main(int argc, char *argv[])
  {
  QApplication a(argc, argv);
  QImage img(64,64, QImage::Format_ARGB32);
  img.fill(Qt::red);
  QSystemTrayIcon sti(QIcon(QPixmap::fromImage(img)));
  sti.show();
   QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable(); // with this line, the
QSystemTrayIcon does not appear
   // comment the previous line to see that the QSystemTrayIcon works and
that there is a bug in that line
  return a.exec();
  }
  ```

  This testcase shows that the
  AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon::~AppMenuPlatformSystemTrayIcon  called
  by the temporary object created inside
  QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable unregisters the icon.

  Some research:

  - Uses http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qsystemtrayicon.html
  - The indicator icon is created under /tmp under a randomly generated
directory name

  didrocks mentions also:

  1. The application says "this is my menu, and here is my icon at that
address", the address being /tmp/blablabla
  2. appindicator receives the bus messages
  3. and says "let's have a look at this icon at that address"
  4. BUT! /tmp in the snap is different form system /tmp

  On Gnome-Flashback (Gnome-Panel),

  Just going about my business on Ubuntu Raring amd64 on an x230 and I heard
the fan kick into action. top showed me that unity-panel-service was consuming
all the free cycles on one of my CPUs. I killed it before my machine
overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see why it was totally pegging out
a  CPU.

  I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
  spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
  it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

  Drop appmenu-qt5 from default installations

Status in indicator-appmenu package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in qtbase-opensource-src package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Currently we are using appmenu-qt5 as our platform theme on desktop,
  however it has many disadvantages, which make me want to get rid of
  it:

  1) Its design is a hack: instead of the using normal QPA API for
  getting the menu, it retrieves the menu bar using QWidget::findChild,
  and then casts the pointer to QMenu*. The normal methods (which are
  getting called by Qt) remain empty stubs.

  2) It is preventing applications from using GTK+ theme integration,
  such as dialogs (I reported this as bug 1378935, but there is no easy
  way to fix that).

  3) It is not working with Qt Quick applications (because it expects a
  QtWidgets window; see also bug 1323853). The standard implementation
  will work with i.e. Qt Quick Controls 2 using apps (implemented in
  https://codereview.qt-project.org/142733).

  4) It breaks other environments such as Plasma or GNOME when
  installed: see bug 1434516, bug 1307619.

  5) Finally, it is mostly unmaintained: most patches since 2014 are
  authored by me, however I see no point continuing to develop that
  code.

  Recently, Shawn Rutledge and I have written a native implementation of
  what appmenu-qt5 provides (global menu and system tray), which is part
  of Qt. That code uses the normal API, is well maintained, and works
  better than appmenu-qt5 (or at least not worse).

  So I propose to drop appmenu-qt5 from default Ubuntu installations,
  and maybe later from archive too.

  Unfortunately we use Qt 5.6, and some of the needed patches are only
  in Qt 5.7, so I would like to backport them to our packaging:

  https://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=f199bb9133fe0446 (will be in
5.6.2 / 5.7.0)
  https://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=488cf78e44947eff (will be in
5.7.0)
  https://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=b6a824d0a3b4fabd (will be in
5.7.0)
  https://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=e4d79e1fdeb6b26b (will be in
5.7.0)

  Timo: if you have no objections, I will commit those patches to the
  packaging Git.

  After we do that, I will remove the appmenu-qt5 recommendation from
  indicator-appmenu (that is the only package referring to it).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1612767] Re: Drop appmenu-qt5 from default installations

2016-09-05 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
With the latest packages in 034 both menus and tray icons seem to work
fine.

For some reason the shortcuts are not shown in menus, but according to
dbus-monitor log, Qt is behaving correctly here (shortcuts are
exported), so this seems a regression somewhere on server side (the same
happens with appmenu-qt5).

  Currently we are using appmenu-qt5 as our platform theme on desktop,

  Timo: if you have no objections, I will commit those patches to the

  After we do that, I will remove the appmenu-qt5 recommendation from
  indicator-appmenu (that is the only package referring to it).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1612767] Re: Drop appmenu-qt5 from default installations

2016-09-03 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
What broke both configurations, with and without appmenu-qt5, was
http://code.qt.io/cgit/qt/qtbase.git/commit/?id=717ff946391233e7.

I have pushed a quick fix to our packaging Git. It cannot be forwarded
as is, but I will try to discuss this with upstream and make sure it is
fixed upstream too.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1612767] Re: Drop appmenu-qt5 from default installations

2016-09-02 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
What broke appmenu-qt5 may be https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-
session/commit/?id=971baf2e225abc5a.

In this case we probably need to backport https://git.gnome.org/browse
/gnome-session/commit/?id=ce4208add3b49d44 which fixes that issue.

However this should not affect the configuration without appmenu-qt5.
Hopefully more on this soon.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1612767] Re: Drop appmenu-qt5 from default installations

2016-08-31 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
I have just been able to reproduce the tst_QStaticText failure in my
pbuilder (on amd64).

I gathered the debug images from that test and submitted upstream as
https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-55653 (see attached file there).

The tst_QAbstractPrintDialog test crashes for me with SIGPIPE in libcups
httpFlushWrite function. Will investigate that a bit later.

Note that I retried the builds in my PPA today, so there are new build
logs there which may be different from the previous ones.

  Currently we are using appmenu-qt5 as our platform theme on desktop,

  4) It breaks other environments such as Plasma when installed: see bug
  1434516.

  5) Finally, it is mostly unmaintained: most patches since 2014 are
  authored by me, however I see no point continuing to develop that
  code.

  what appmenu-qt5 provides (global menu and system tray), which is part

Thanks Timo! I committed the changes last week.

Unfortunately I get tests failures when trying to build qtbase, but they
seem unrelated to my changes

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1573639] Re: ownCloud Client system tray icon integration broken

2016-04-25 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Copying Olivier's comment from upstream bug:

I was able to locate the problem. The problem is in ubuntu's "appmenu-
qt5" and is a bug that cause our call to
QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable() to remove the icon.

That's because appmenu-qt5 seems to assume there is only one
QPlatformSystemTrayIcon while there can be one per QSystemTrayIcon. in
particular, QSystemTrayIcon::isSystemTrayAvailable creates a temporary
one, and when it gets distroyed, it unregister the dbus object for the
existing systray.

Adding the appmenu-qt5 task accordingly.

  Attached is the output of a heath-check analysis of indicator-

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1378935] Re: appmenu-qt5 prevents apps from using native Gtk+ dialogs

2015-03-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Sebastien, the long-term plan is to implement global menus support in Qt
itself so that appmenu-qt5 becomes redundant.

This will be in Qt 5.6 but we can backport it to our packages next
cycle.

See https://codereview.qt-project.org/103701.

  appmenu-qt5 prevents apps from using native Gtk+ dialogs

Status in Application menu for Qt5:

Status in appmenu-qt5 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi,

  QtBase ships with a platform theme called gtk2, which enables native
  file dialog, color dialog and font dialog on Gtk-based environments
  (such as Unity and GNOME).

https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qtbase/source/5.3:src/platformsupport/themes/genericunix/qgenericunixthemes.cpp#L593

  However, when appmenu-qt5 is installed, the platform theme is forcibly
  set to appmenu-qt5 (via /etc/profile.d/appmenu-qt5.sh). Thus, the
  advantages of gtk2 theme like native dialogs are not available.

  Test case:

  0) Install qtcreator and appmenu-qt5;
  1) Launch qtcreator and select Open Project;
  2) Launch QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME= qtcreator and select Open Project.

  In case 1), the standard Qt file dialog will be used (looking a stranger in
Gtk environment).
  In case 2), the native Gtk+ file dialog will be used (looking nice).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1363630] Re: Since revision 446.1.3, Zenity backend is broken

2015-03-18 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

  Currently the code in zenity_question() looks like:

  if (!g_spawn_check_exit_status (exit_status, error))
-   confirmed = TRUE;
+   confirmed = TRUE;
  else
-   confirmed = exit_status == 0;
+   confirmed = exit_status == 0;

  However !g_spawn_check_exit_status() call is mostly equivalent to
  exit_status != 0. Thus, confirmed will be *always* set to TRUE, even
  if the user cancelled the dialog.

  I have prepared a branch to fix this.
+
+ == Impact ==
+ The Cancel buttons in shutdown/end session dialogs are not working, and do
the same as OK buttons. This may lead to data loss due to unsaved
documents/etc.
+
+ == Test Case ==
+ * Log in to GNOME Flashback session.
+ * Select Shutdown from indicator-session menu.
+ * In the popped up dialog select Cancel.
+
+ Expected result: the dialog will close, the machine won't shut down.
+
+ == Development / Stable Fix ==
+ Please see the attached branches.
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ The fix is part of 14.10 release and was confirmed to work fine. So no
regression potential.

I can confirm this bug, it is actually a bug in indicator-session so
adding a corresponding task.

Also, please don't call indicators a system tray, these are two
different applets (and the latter is disabled by default).

  Test case:

  0) Install qtcreator and appmenu-qt5;
  1) Launch qtcreator and select Open Project;

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1383382] Re: Adding indicator-applet appmenu does not export/move all menu items to panel (Utopic)

2014-10-24 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Thanks for investigation! Does all that happen in Unity as well, or are
there differences in appearance between Unity and gnome-panel?

Title:
  Adding indicator-applet appmenu does not export/move all menu items to
  panel (Utopic)

Status in “indicator-appmenu” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Current Scenario

  1. install indicator-applet-appmenu
  2. add it to panel.

  3. In the panel, For some gtk apps (gnome-terminal) It is showing only
  a single menu; File-close. All other menu items remains in the app.
  For some other gtk apps (i.e. Nautilus, eog) it doesn't show any menu
  at all.

  4. Surprisingly for Firefox it does properly move all the menus to
  panel.

  Expected Scenario:

  Adding indicator-applet-appmenu or global menu should move all the
  menu items from local app to panel.

  To reproduce: either start with a fresh Ubuntu install and then
  install xubuntu-desktop, or start with Xubuntu and then install
  ubuntu-desktop - ie have both Xfce and Unity installed on the same
  machine.

  Xfce now has support for gtk3 indicators launched by upstart, but
  indicator-appmenu is totally broken - it will constantly crash the
  panel and applications. Xfce has a mechanism to hide indicators, and
  then the frontend UI will not be loaded in the panel, but it seems
  that UBUNTU_MENUPROXY is still being set in Xfce, which causes menus
  to disappear from applications, even though nothing is available to
  receive them.

  I discussed this with tedg and he suggested that the problem may be to
  do with the upstart service which sets UBUNTU_MENUPROXY, ie
  /usr/share/upstart/sessions/unity-gtk-module.conf

  We may in future get the appmenus working in Xfce, and then we would
  need some way to turn the menuproxy on and off depending on the user
  configuration. But for now, since they are broken anyway, it would be
  easiest to simply blacklist xubuntu desktop completely.

Can you please also check that you have indicator-appmenu installed? (It
is not the same as indicator-applet-appmenu).

Also, please paste output of this command somewhere:

gdbus introspect -e -d com.canonical.AppMenu.Registrar -o

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1378935] [NEW] appmenu-qt5 prevents apps from using native Gtk+ dialogs

2014-10-08 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Public bug reported:

Test case:

0) Install qtcreator and appmenu-qt5;
1) Launch qtcreator and select Open Project;
2) Launch QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME= qtcreator and select Open Project.

In case 1), the standard Qt file dialog will be used (looking a stranger in Gtk
environment).
In case 2), the native Gtk+ file dialog will be used (looking nice).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1201180] Re: powerbtn.sh conflicts with logind

2014-04-04 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
rubik-cube: there are some issues with your patch:

1) Do not hardcode x86_64-linux-gnu triplet, which only works on amd64.
Instead, you can use `dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH` for example.
2) `test -L /usr/bin/qdbus` will be *always* true, as the binary is managed by
qtchooser.
3) Finally, please generate a proper debdiff with a changelog entry.

Also, please note that instead of specifying full paths to qdbus binary,
you can just run `qdbus -qt4` or `qdbus -qt5` without caring about the
paths (though not sure if it's helpful here).

Unsubscribing sponsors unless these issues are resolved.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1263228] Re: indicator-keyboard and gnome-panel icons are small (difficult to view on FullHD display)

2014-02-22 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
No, if it happens in Unity, then it is not a bug in gnome-panel/gnome-
applets/indicator-applet.

Other tasks look OK to me.

** No longer affects: indicator-applet (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- indicator-keyboard and gnome-panel icons are small (difficult to view on
FullHD display)
+ icons in indicators are small (difficult to view on FullHD display)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1246657] Re: after installing UM calendar disappeared from panel

2014-02-06 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
How did you reinstall UM? Were there any warnings during reinstall? Can
you please also run apport-collect 1246657 command which will attach
some system logs to this bug.

Also, I don't believe that reinstalling a package that doesn't have any
maintainer scripts can cause *any* system errors. Because of that, and
to make apport-collect work correctly, I am reassigning this to Unity.

** Project changed: unity-mail = unity (Ubuntu)

  Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

Bug description:
  New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
  Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

  Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
  parameters-keyboard-hotkeys-windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

  Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
  latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
  of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
  english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
  layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.
