[Dx-packages] [Bug 1987920] [NEW] indicator-datetime fails to build with default gcc (gcc-12)

2022-08-26 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

indicator-datetime fails to build from source in Kinetic with the
default compiler, gcc/g++-12

To allow the package to build so that we can complete the evolution-
data-server 3.45 transition, I switched the package to build with
gcc/g++-11.

I suggest switching to the Ayatana Indicators (ayatana-indicator-
datetime) which are maintained and are able to build successfully with
the default compiler. See https://launchpad.net/bugs/1983374

@Khurshid, we need to rebuild (or remove) indicator-keyboard soon to
complete a library transition. See https://launchpad.net/bugs/1983372

What do you think is the best way to handle this?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1770674] [NEW] Please drop recommends on geoclue-ubuntu-geoip | geoclue-provider

2018-05-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Please drop the recommends on geoclue-ubuntu-geoip | geoclue-provider so
that geoclue can be removed.

I am not doing this myself since I haven't checked to see what
functionality is lost by removing the recommended package.

This issue is blocking the removal of libnm-glib4 (from network-manager-
applet) from Ubuntu. The library has already been removed from Debian.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389336] Re: Use geoclue-2.0

2018-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
libunity-webapps was removed from Ubuntu 17.10 so I'm closing that task.

The remaining bug here, ubuntu-geoip (a Recommends of indicator-
datetime) is a problem. geoclue was removed from Debian 2 years ago.
geoclue build-depends on libnm-glib-dev and libnm-util-dev which Debian
is removing now. Maybe it's time to remove ubuntu-geoip.

The Ubuntu menu bar clock offers no setting to "show year".

Yes, I know what year it is, but I have very good reason for wanting
it shown. For years, I've been collecting screen-shots, when I'm doing
something I think is pretty cool. When I use to use windows, these
screen shots (over the years) have always showed the current year.

However, since April of 2007 (The date I started using Ubuntu
exclusively), my screen shots have not included the year, because the
Gnome clock doesn't provide this capability.

insensitive and unchecked whenever 'Date and month' is unchecked..."

Also, this is why I try suggesting really strongly to you guys not to
run -proposed during the development cycle because these kind of
removals happen.

(Maybe you just need to make sure you downgrade all the dconf binary
packages at the same time.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2018-03-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Jeremy, I apologize for the handling of this bug.

Ubuntu 18.04 no longer includes an encrypted home option in the
installer and ecryptfs-utils is being demoted to universe. See LP:
#1756840

Once ecryptfs-utils is in universe, packages in main (like
accountsservice and gnome-control-center) can't depend on it.

My understanding is that Canonical Security would eventually like to
offer ext4 based encryption for home directories, but that feature won't
be implemented in time for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I also understand that
Pop!_OS is switching to promoting full disk encryption in its 18.04
release.

Once again, I apologize that your patches weren't reviewed more promptly
and helpfully. I hope that we Ubuntu developers will do better next time
you propose patches. Feel free to discuss proposed desktop-related
patches with the Ubuntu Desktop team.

Title:
  FFe: Update gnome-control-center to 3.27.90

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in humanity-icon-theme package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  FFe Justification
  -
This upgrade was ready a little bit late because we wanted to fix some
regressions identified in testing the new version instead of rushing it in.

  News

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/blob/master/NEWS

  To Do
  -

  1. The app icon was renamed from 'preferences-system' to 'gnome-
control-center'. We'll want to update humanity-icon-theme and the
Ubuntu Budgie default themes. But there is a naming issue with gnome-
icon-theme so let's hold off on changing icon themes until that gets
  resolved:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/3

  2. You can't maximize the Settings app (button is there, but doesn't
work). Maybe only affects when run in a VM?

  Done

  1. Rebase 70_allow_sound_above_100.patch
(This patch has been somewhat upstreamed. However, the upstream feature is
incomplete without the gnome-settings-daemon patches that haven't been accepted
upstream yet. Also, the upstream gsettings schema for this feature has a
different name than the Ubuntu schema. Didier's plan was to keep using the
Ubuntu schema name until the gnome-settings-daemon patches were accepted. After
that, we'll need a way to migrate the gsettings schema.)

-> rebasing is done, keeping the same gsettings key than in artful.

  2. Background panel redesign (didn't land for 3.28 so never mind)

  3. The default 'faces' (user avatars) were changed and there was an
  upgrade issue.

  Other Info
  --
I believe this can be updated independently of gnome-settings-daemon or
gnome-shell/mutter.

Packages are available in the GNOME3 Staging PPA for bionic.

indicator-network and unity-greeter-session-broadcast have no reverse

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1322617] Re: dconf-editor: unable to edit keys using keyboard

2018-01-22 Thread Jeremy Bicha
dconf-editor is a separate package in Ubuntu 16.04+ so I'm reassigning.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1698795] Re: Humanity should provide symbolic versions of custom icons for GNOME Shell

2017-08-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Fedora includes a symbolic Firefox icon in their Firefox distro packaging:
http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/rpms/firefox/blob/master/f/firefox-symbolic.svg

I think we should do the same and see about pushing that icon upstream.

I think it's up to the app developers to provide the symbolic icons not
the icon theme.

Personally, the icon in the top bar is so small that a symbolic simpler
monochrome icon is a bit more clear than a regular color icon.

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 15.10, "glew.pc" version 1.10.0 had the following "includedir"
entry:
  includedir=/usr/include/GL

On Ubuntu 16.04, "glew.pc" version 1.13.0 has such entry changed to:
  includedir=$(prefix)/include

As a result, after installing libglew-dev package on Ubuntu Xenial, the
following command:
  pkg-config --cflags glew

  prints: "-I/usr/include/libdrm" instead of "-I/usr/include/GL
-I/usr/include/libdrm". So, C/C++ projects using GLEW can no longer
find necessary headers when using "pkg-config".

As a workaround, on Xenial, "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/glew.pc" can
be edited and the problematic line changed to:
  includedir=$(prefix)/include/GL

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-06-20 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Matthias, I don't think other distros offer encrypted home directories
through ecryptfs. Probably the easiest to start with would be Tanglu or
Debian?

By the way, tyhicks said he'd eventually like to switch Ubuntu's feature
over to using native ext4 encryption. I think it would really be
interesting to upstream and other distros then. If you're interested,
talk to him about that.

What Ubuntu release are you using?

What is the output of 'locale' specifically LC_TIME ?

Does the event show correctly in gnome-calendar and in evolution?

Please upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and re-test. If the bug is still
reproducible, increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we
can try again.

I apologize that we are not always to respond to bug reports promptly.
Do feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Unity ships an Amazon launcher in its preset favourites which

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1669655] Re: Adapt to new Nautilus icon name

2017-03-09 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Thanks for checking this.

Yes, the ubuntu-themes change looks wrong:
https://code.launchpad.net/~jbicha/ubuntu-themes/adapt-to-nautilus-324/+merge/319453

And I've updated the humanity branch to not symlink the -panel icons.

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-art-pkg/humanity/release/

If we don't do the humanity change in zesty, then we'd have to do it in
the Zesty GNOME3 Staging PPA (which has nautilus 3.24) and it doesn't
seem useful to have to maintain a different version of humanity-icon-
theme there.

To summarize:
- humanity needs to be updated anyway, regardless of which icons Nautilus uses
in zesty
- The Nautilus change is already in zesty-proposed (to make it easier for other
Ubuntu flavors to test the new Nautilus and adapt if needed; and I thought we
were going forward with this change for zesty)
- I can add symlinks to adwaita-icon-theme if that would help you sponsor it
since I can't upload it myself. But to be fair, adwaita already has a very
large number of missing symlinks. [1]

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1669655] Re: Adapt to new Nautilus icon name

2017-03-08 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Thank you. I fixed the broken symlinks.

(By the way, there are other broken symlinks for other apps I didn't
create.)

I couldn't find anything that used the system-file-manager-panel icons.
I wish we had something like https://codesearch.debian.net/ to make this
easy to check.

I did find LP: #553256. It may be obsolete because Nautilus doesn't use
a separate dialog window for file operation status (like copy, move,
delete) any more; it's included in an integrated popup window on Ubuntu
16.10+.

Marco, could you look into updating startup-database-vacuum.patch for
this new version?

I'm attaching a debdiff against the current version in zesty with
everything else needed for this update except that patch update.

This is the current patch:
https://sources.debian.net/src/zeitgeist/0.9.16-0.2/debian/patches/startup-database-vacuum.patch/

And this is what was merged into zeitgeist 1.0:

Bug description:
I have found that in "System Settings > User Accounts" that if you
select an account and then select the button called "History" (which
is meant to show the login history for that account), it will show you
when you last logged in as "Session Started", but it will show that
you "Session Ended" just before you login the next time.

To clarify what I mean, let's say that yesterday I logged into my
account on this machine at 14:29, and then sometime near 23:00 I
logged out, and then this morning I logged into my account somewhere
around 11:20, it will show this:

  Today 11:20 Session Started
  Today 11:19 Session Ended
  Yesterday, 14:29 Session Started

So it assumes that the last session ended when you log into a new one,
so the bug seems to be that it does not log when a session ends
properly, and only logs it when a new session starts.

I have attached a screenshot to show my example as I see it in the
  History GUI.

I have found this bug to be present in Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 15.04,
Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 with GNOME 3.18, and Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME
  3.20.

Bug description:
  Impact

Ubuntu 16.04's accountsservice was built without systemd support because
systemd dropped libsystemd-login because that functionality was merged into
libsystemd.

At a minimum, this broke GNOME Shell's "Switch User" feature.

  Test Case
  =
  1. From Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1, install the updated accountsservice packages.
  2. Add a user if necessary to ensure you have at least 2 user accounts
configured.
  3. Reload gnome-shell. You can do this with Alt+F2 and entering the lower
case letter r. Or you can log out of all user accounts and log back in.
  4. Click the system status area in the top right of GNOME Shell.
  5. Click your user name. "Switch User" should appear in the list.

  Regression Potential

  None.
The one-line change to accountsservice's configure check was made in Debian's
accountsservice 0.6.40-3 a year ago(!). The patch is upstreamed and was
included in accountsservice 0.6.42 released in June.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1577049] Re: Switch user feature has disappeared from GNOME Shell since upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04

2016-08-25 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- Before upgrade to 16.04, I could select "change (or switch) user" from
- the indicator applet (on the top right of the screen in gnome-shell).
- Since 16.04, this option has vanished, only "close session" and "account
- parameters" are present.
+ Impact
+ ==
+ Ubuntu 16.04's accountsservice was built without systemd support because
systemd dropped libsystemd-login because that functionality was merged into
libsystemd.
+
+ At a minimum, this broke GNOME Shell's "Switch User" feature.
+
+ Test Case
+ =
+ 1. From Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1, install the updated accountsservice packages.
+ 2. Because Ubuntu does not automatically restart accountsservice on upgrades
like Debian does (maybe we should?), you'll need to run this command:
+
+ sudo systemctl restart accounts-daemon.service
+
+ Or just restart your computer.
+
+ 3. Add a user if necessary to ensure you have at least 2 user accounts
configured.
+ 4. Click the system status area in the top right of GNOME Shell.
+ 5. Click your user name. Extra options should appear including "Switch User"
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ None.
+ This change was made in Debian's accountsservice 0.6.40-3 a year ago(!). The
patch is upstreamed and was included in accountsservice 0.6.42 released in June.

** Changed in: ubuntu-gnome
   Status: Triaged => Fix Committed

  1) Add a new variable to the libindicator .pc files called something like
genericindicatordir which continues to be just /usr/lib
  2) Switch the indicatordir variable to a multiarch location (again -- we
reverted away from that for bug 1126360)
  3) Have unity fallback to look in the genericindicatordir as well as the
(now-) multiarch indicatordir for plugins
  4) As each indicator gets rebuilt, it will automatically migrate to
multiarch, since "indicatordir" is now multiarch. But old indicators will
still work.

I have found that in "System Settings > User Accounts" that if you

is meant to show the login history for that account), it will show you
when you last logged in as "Session Started", but it will show that
you "Session Ended" just before you login the next time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1126385] Re: Migrate to mulitarch indicators

2016-06-24 Thread Jeremy Bicha
See also bug 1126360.

The fix for that bug has resulted in different behavior on Ubuntu and
Debian.

workrave fails to build currently in yakkety because in Debian the indicator is
stored in
 /usr/lib/*/indicators3/7/libworkrave.so
but in Yakkety, it's:
 /usr/lib/indicators3/7/libworkrave.so

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/workrave/1.10.15-1/+build/9731661

So please either fix Debian's libindicator or Ubuntu's so that they have
the same behavior. Personally, I prefer the multiarch directory.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1228422] Re: Severe regressions to typing in Greek, Russian, etc due to IBus

2013-09-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better.

The Mozilla bug report isn't really useful though as it's over 12 years
old.

Title:
Severe regressions to typing in Greek, Russian, etc due to IBus

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
For the last several versions of Ubuntu, there was an inability to type Greek
(or many non-latin scripts) in the Dash.
  With bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1205713 the
problem has been fixed, and it got fixed by enabling IBus for Greek, Russian
and several other scripts.

However, this change revealed several deficiencies in IBus (tested
  with Greek and Russian):

  1. It is no longer possible to use keyboard accelerators when the active
keyboard layout is in Greek, Russian, etc.
The reason is because the gtk+ IM contains special code so that Ctrl+A while
in the Greek keyboard layout would still do a Select All.
Currently in Ubuntu 13.10, when you press, for example, Ctrl+A (with Greek
layout active), the app receives a Greek Alpha, which is ignored by the app.

The same goes with, for example, Alt+F, which no longer opens up the
  File menu.

  More background about this at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69230#c2
(FIXME: need to add link to gtk+ git with code on how they implement the
solution)

  2. The default keyboard shortcut to switch between keyboard layouts is
Super+Space (default for IBus). Pressing the Super key ends up
bringing up the HUD most of the times. I have been trying to get
myself to press Super+Space more properly, but it's really difficult
to get it right. I now get it right only about 30% of the times, and I
need to pause when typing in order to check if I am actually writing
  by accident in the HUD.

I would say it is a huge usability issue that, as is, will alienate
  non-English users of Ubuntu.

  3. It is not possible to change the shortcut to switch keyboard layouts to
the traditional Alt+Shift (used by most Ubuntu-gr users).
In addition, if you manage to change the shortcut to something else, then
it's impossible to change back to Super+Space.

Hi! The icon for my application (gufw) has a blurry icon in a wide
screen (Tested in Ubuntu 11.04 alpha3 Compiz updated to 23 March '11).

On my desktop computer I have a normal screen, I see all right; but on
my laptop (HP nx7300) with a wide screen I see a wrong gufw icon.

Any idea, please? I think could be an Unity bug. Best regards and
  thanks in advance!
