[Dx-packages] [Bug 1987920] Re: indicator-datetime fails to build with default gcc (gcc-12)

2022-08-30 Thread Khurshid Alam
It is released now, but we are looking into fixing build with gcc 12.
And we are also looking into if we can port to ayatana this cycle.

Bug description:
indicator-datetime fails to build from source in Kinetic with the
  default compiler, gcc/g++-12

To allow the package to build so that we can complete the evolution-
data-server 3.45 transition, I switched the package to build with
  gcc/g++-11.

I suggest switching to the Ayatana Indicators (ayatana-indicator-
datetime) which are maintained and are able to build successfully with
  the default compiler. See https://launchpad.net/bugs/1983374

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1983374] Re: Switch to ayatana-indicator-keyboard?

2022-08-02 Thread Khurshid Alam
@jbicha

We had plan to move to ayatana-indicators before Jammy but never
happened since it was very large change across multiple unity packages.
And two set of libraries causes issues like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libayatana-
appindicator/+bug/1964964.

I have asked Rudra to look into it. It seems only tests fails. I didn't
notice any functionality issue atleast on Jammy.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1640409] Re: show my login name in menu bar not working.

2019-06-03 Thread Khurshid Alam
That is because XDG_SEAT and XDG_SESSION_ID are not set anymore &
indicator-session depends on it.

dbus-x11 installs /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95dbus_update-activation-env which
unsets those env variables.

Comment out those & reboot. It will work again. LP: #1831491

This issue is blocking the removal of libnm-glib4 (from network-

By "we" do you mean official ubuntu-mate team ? In that case, contact me
on community.ubuntu.com.

Indicator-datetime requires lots of changes including the upcoming api
break from eds. Someone from community proposed to remove phone realted
code and go back to c. Not sure if it is still possible.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1828725] Re: indicator-datetime does not have color squares for different calendars and dates from contacts (birthdays & anniversaries)

2019-05-12 Thread Khurshid Alam
Why this is relevant in 19.10 ? Trusty already had eol.

Indicator-datetime was ported from C to C++ (r: 298) to work with
unity-8 and that feature gone missing with that. But there is no unity-8
anymore and the code doesn't work.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1827411] Re: With nemo-desktop it spams syslog

2019-05-06 Thread Khurshid Alam
Actually it's nor really related to nemo, it's happening since the split
of nautilus-desktop as a separate binary from nautilus. Bamf somehow not
considering desktop window as valid bamf window (see
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/wz32KF7Kqx/). As a result when indicator-
appmenu tries to track menu it fails. We could just simply ignore
tracking menus for desktop_windows for now.

Bug description:
I'm assuming the issue is related to Compiz, but I'm not 100% sure.
When I'm switching workspaces, it occasionally locks up (becoming more
frequent). Most of the time, I'm going from the current one down
(Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow), and it freezes mid slide. Typically, I'm able
to correct things by backing out to a terminal then returning
(Ctrl+Alt+F1, pause, Alt+F7), but sometimes when I return the dual
screen setup acts as one large screen (windows are stretched to the
full width of both screens) and many of the windows collect on the
  first workspace.

  Ubuntu 11.04 (Classic)
  All packages up-to-date.

If there are any logs/etc that would be helpful, let me know.

Ah, right, Application-switcher is unity only. You need static-
application-switcher. You can get it by installing `compiz-plugins`.

Expected: Should change background color and opacity of the application

Actual: There's absolutely no change, even after restarting compiz

IMO this is a big issue, because the defaults for the application switcher
are horrible - it has a highly transparent background by default making window
titles hard to read, and because this setting is broken it's impossible to
change it

This also happens with the equivalent setting in the Static
  Application switcher plugin as well

IMO in addition to fixing this, the default should really be changed

accessibility issue. Take a look at the attached screenshot, this
looks horrible and the titles are hard to read

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1779661] Re: Option to change Application Switcher color/opacity is broken

2018-08-25 Thread Khurshid Alam
It is probably mate-specific issue. Try raising the issue on https
://ubuntu-mate.community.

Application switcher (Alt+Tab) is enabled by default under Unity & it is
fine. See: https://i.imgur.com/add9tto.png

It could also be a problem with graphics driver.

Compiz not changing background color is a valid bug though. Does it also
happen gnome-flashback (compiz) session?

Try `compiz --replace` in terminal and toggle set-background-color. What
does the output say?

2018-08-16 Thread Khurshid Alam
Ah I forgot, For your own custom time format, you need to first set
`time-format` from 'locale-default' to 'custom'.

You can customize the format as long as they are understood by strftime.

2018-08-16 Thread Khurshid Alam
For me it works though.

What is the output of `locale` ? It is possible that indicator-datetime
is not building with language packs. Do you have "french" installed? If
not you can install it from System language and regional settings. Also
check if you have geoclue installed.

1) Install dconf-editor.
2) Go to /com/canonical/indicator/datetime
3) Check timezone name
4) You can change time-format with "custom-time-format" key

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1776074] Re: indicator-datetime shouldn't recommend big ubuntu-touch-sounds package (maybe Suggests should be used instead)

2018-07-31 Thread Khurshid Alam
No. Touch sound is also used for desktop for ringtones and alarms.
Removing touch-sound will end up indicator-datetime spamming syslog
specially if it can't detects the type of system (i.e. phone or
desktop). Removing touch-sounds requires dropping "phone" support in its
code or similar considerable changes.

I can make the ringtones configurable through gsettings and make both
phone & desktop use it and then perhaps renaming it to "ubuntu-ringtones
/unity-ringtones". It's better than the current situation.

Appindicator is dead ? Since when? Ubuntu and all other variants use it.
Unity uses it. I fear deprecating libappindicator in favor of
libayatana-appindicator won't be easy task in unity and Gnome. In-fact
it's a huge task for Unity. But since both library can co-exist I don't
really see a problem of having both in universe.

Title:
  [MIR] libayatana-appindicator

Status in libayatana-appindicator package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  [Availability]
  * Everywhere

  [Rationale]
  * Appindicator is dead, we should move it to universe and switch to the
"better" and "supported" ayatana version
  [Security]
  * No security bugs found

  [Quality assurance]
  * Strongly maintained in Debian, lots of packages in main used to have deltas
to drop and switch to appindicator, I think we will save a lot of work by just
syncing stuff and not maintaining appindicator anymore (at least moving it to
universe)
  [Dependencies]
  * All deps in main
  [Standards compliance]
  * New compat level
  * Maintained in sync with Debian
  * It builds a python2 bind, maybe we can just not MIR all binaries there
  [Maintenance]
  * Debian maintains it, and is doing a port to ayatana of all packages.

  [Background information]
  * I think we can also just MIR libayatana-appindicator3-1

  reverse-depends -c main src:libappindicator -r cosmic
  Reverse-Depends
  ===
  * network-manager-gnome (for libappindicator3-1)
  * remmina   (for libappindicator3-1)
  * transmission-gtk  (for libappindicator3-1)

all the three packages are now using ayatana in -proposed pocket

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1760435] [NEW] Use Ubuntu language packs for various indicators

2018-04-01 Thread Khurshid Alam
Public bug reported:

The Unity family of packages was previously part of standard Ubuntu.
Thus all the translation templates were made available to the
translators via Launchpad, and the translations were included in the
language packs.

Since those packages are no longer part of standard Ubuntu, they have
been moved from main to universe. And translations are dropped.

At the moment, it is feasible for us to keep using langpacks.

That means adding "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" to their debian/control
and doing an upload.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1688395] Re: Remove Oxide, webbrowser-app and the Unity webapps

2017-07-25 Thread Khurshid Alam
Not sure why oxide is being removed. Various qt-apps/oauth2-gui (search
in kubuntu's ppa, getdeb) are still using it. Didn't you get any
objection from them?

If it is compiling just fine with qt-5.9 (it does, I checked), Ubuntu
should keep it in universe.

I know of two tasks other than removing packages -

Unity ships an Amazon launcher in its preset favourites which
launches a binary from unity-webapps-service. That should be removed.

We need to keep providing the Amazon launcher by default (in GNOME
Shell) - it should be reimplemented and added to Shell by default.

For 16.04 there was a patch which fixes the issue for me

since then indicator-datetime code changed significantly and the patch
is not valid anymore.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1629251] Re: Some app-indicators not showing menus

2017-03-09 Thread Khurshid Alam
Dropbox won't show any menu if it starts as old systray menu. Under
Unity (Ubuntu >=17.04) it has to start as appindicator.

env XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity dropbox start -i

It should also work for other desktop-environment which also uses
indicator-applet like gnome-flashback session.

Title:
Indicator-Datetime always shows UTC time for any online calendar added
  to evolution (Unity7, Xenial)

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My timezone is set to GMT+5:30 (Kolkata, India) from indicator
datetime settings. But when I add a online google calendar in
Evolution, events (which has start time and end time) are appearing as
UTC time. However in evolution, its all nice and evolution does
  respect my timezone.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Set google calendar timezone to match your timezone from google
  calendar settings (web).

  2. From web interface, add a event with time into that calendar. Then
  copy its private ical address.

  3. Open evolution. Add that calendar from new->calendar->on the web.

  4. reboot.

  What should happen?

If a event starts from 5 PM, indicator-datetime should reflect that.

  What is happening?

indicator-datetime shows every event starting at UTC time; i.e, in my
  case 5.30 hours leading!

  Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/gPisVnl.png

Note: It seems it only happens for online calendars. Locally created
  events are ok.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1302004] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't list in-progress events

2017-03-07 Thread Khurshid Alam
On Unity-7 this bug is easily reproducible.

1. I have more than 2 all-day events.

2. There are more 10 events starting next week (clearly after today).

Click on indicator-datetime...

1. There is on a single event listed there. There should be 2 full-day
events.

2. Instead showing all of my full-day events, it is showing those events
starting next week.

What should happen:

1. It must display today's full-day event at top before showing any
other events starting next week.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1310933] Re: Indicator-applet-appmenu should only reveal itself on mouse over in Gnome-Flashback (Zesty)

2016-12-26 Thread Khurshid Alam
Ok. May be the global menu behavior is ok. But I do not really agree
with problem (2).

It doesn't show any window title which makes things difficult to
identify menu for a particular window when many windows are open on a
single work-space. I have to bring a window to focus to make sure I am
accessing menu for that particular window.

It becomes more pronounce in zesty as Ubuntu stopped patching gnome-apps
for horizontal menu. And we are left with single vertical menu.

Of course I can determine who's menu it is by peeking at the menu
itself, but it takes little extra time I don't want waste even that bit
in a rigid work environment.

Title:
Indicator-Datetime always shows UTC time for any online calendar added

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My timezone is set to GMT+5:30 (Kolkata, India) from indicator
datetime settings. But when I add a online google calendar in
Evolution, events (which has start time and end time) are appearing as
UTC time. However in evolution, its all nice and evolution does
  respect my timezone.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Set google calendar timezone to match your timezone from google
  calendar settings (web).

  2. From web interface, add a event with time into that calendar. Then
  copy its private ical address.

  3. Open evolution. Add that calendar from new->calendar->on the web.

  4. reboot.

  What should happen?

If a event starts from 5 PM, indicator-datetime should reflect that.

  What is happening?

indicator-datetime shows every event starting at UTC time; i.e, in my
  case 5.30 hours leading!

  Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/gPisVnl.png

Note: It seems it only happens for online calendars. Locally created
  events are ok.

As filed under bug #1342123 (under Canonical System Image, i.e. for mobile
installs) by several users, including desktop installs,
evolution-calendar-factory (previsouly in 14.04) then
evolution-calendar-factory-subprocess (in 16.04) run using several hundreds of
megabytes of memory (~ 300 Mio in my case).
This might have to do with having lots of linked calendars (Google Agenda or
other). Another user on my system has much fewer Google Agendas than me and her
memory usage of evolution-calendar-factory-subprocess is less, but still close
to 100 Mio.
There have been random crashes of the process, mostly directly upon login,
always caused by addressing memory out of range.
There used to be a workaround by invoking the process a second time, which
caused it to exit more or less gracefully. This is not the case anymore in
16.04.
Unfortunately, searching Google leads to the bug #1342123 which concerns
"Canonical System Image", and several users have replied even though it does
not only concern mobile installs, which is not immediately self-evident when
you are not aware what "Canonical System Image" stands for…

indicator-datetime in saucy shows wrong time (& date) for some online

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After adding a online calendar in evolution (For example, Calendar
Events from remember the milk), indicator-datetime
(13.10.0+13.10.20131023.2-0ubuntu1.1) shows wrong date & time for the
any event on that calendar even though it shows correct date & time in
  Evolution.

My system timezone is Asia/Kolkata (GMT+5:30). Evolution is set to use
system timezone. In remember the milk timezone is set for (GMT+5:30).
However when I add it to evolution , indicator-datetime shows wrong
date & time (exactly 5:30 hour ahead).Local eds calendar events or
google calendars are not affected by this. This only occurs for online
  calendars(webcal:\\) I have attached a screenshot.

  $ gsettings get com.canonical.indicator.datetime timezone-name
  '"Asia/Kolkata Kolkata"'

  $ cat rtm.ics | grep TZID
  TZID:Asia/Kolkata

  $ cat rtm.ics | grep X-WR-TIMEZONE
  X-WR-TIMEZONE:Asia/Kolkata

  $ cat rtm.ics | grep X-LIC-LOCATION
  X-LIC-LOCATION:Asia/Kolkata

Here is the ical file I added to Evolution:
  http://paste.ubuntu.com/7550447/

  Test Case:
  ---
  1. Set remeber the milk timezone to your system timezone. Copy the ical
address with events. The calendar must have events with time

  2. Add it to evolution.

  3. It appears ok in evolution.

  4. Restart indicator-datetime. Click on the clock menu & select the
  day of the event.

The event will appear in wrong time (in my case, 5:30 hour ahead).

  4. reboot.

  What should happen?

If a event starts from 5 PM, indicator-datetime should reflect that.

  What is happening?

indicator-datetime shows every event starting at UTC time; i.e, in my
  case 5.30 hours behind!

  Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/gPisVnl.png

Note: It seems it only happens for online calendars. Locally created
  events are ok.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1302004] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't list in-progress events

...That way, in-progress meetings wouldn't disappear off the

Yes, it should be like this. I have tested the patch on Trusty. It is
working well for in-progress events.

I am ok with (updated) wiki specification. Thanks

Bug description:
This bug is related to this bug: Bug #1293646 (Which is marked as fix
  released)

With latest update of indicator (13.10.0+14.04.20140328-0ubuntu1) it
lists all events for all past selected dates properly (which was fixed
in bug Bug #1293646) except today's date. When I click on any past
  date in calendar it shows:

  1. all all-day events for the day.
  2. all events with time for the day
  3. upcoming (future) all-day events
  4. upcoming (future) events with time

But when I click on today's date it only shows:

  1. future all day events
  2. future events with time

I still have to click on previous day's date to find out all all-day
  events for today.

The behavior (showing all events for a day) should be same for any
  date, including today's date.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeAndDate#menu-events: If there are more
than five, the events shown should be, in order of priority, * any
events that start or end (a) for today, after the current minute, or
  (b) for any other date, at any time on that date, * any full-day
events that span all of the selected date...

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1303249] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't show evolution/eds calendar color for all-day events (Trusty/Utopic/Vivid)

2015-07-05 Thread Khurshid Alam
From recently updated wiki specification, it says:

*...an icon representing what kind of event it is (appointment,
meeting, ''etc''), and for calendar events ideally tinted depending on
which calendar it comes from (Personal, Work, ''etc'');

Tinted? Does this mean some events appear more bright, some less? Well,
this does not solve the real problem. If two events are with the same
title (lets say Pay Telephone Bill) but from different calendar, how
do we differentiate between them?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1383382] Re: Adding indicator-applet appmenu does not export/move all menu items to panel (Utopic)

2014-10-31 Thread Khurshid Alam
As commented on the mailing list, resetting compiz (dconf reset
/org/compiz) then logging into metacity does solve the problem. But it
reappears when I log back in compiz session. Running compiz -replace
inside metacity session also works- It brings back all compiz effect
doesn't affect indicator-applet-appmenu.

I think Unity's compiz plugin in someway interfering with flashback-
compiz session ( compiz has tons of bugs on Utopic).

For some other gtk apps (i.e. Nautilus, eog) it doesn't show any menu
  at all.

  4. Surprisingly for Firefox it does properly move all the menus to

  Expected Scenario:

Adding indicator-applet-appmenu or global menu should move all the

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1383382] Re: Adding indicator-applet appmenu does not export/move all menu items to panel (Utopic)

2014-10-24 Thread Khurshid Alam
Upon deeper investigation I noticed that some default apps works some
doesn't. Here is the result so far:

Apps that does NOT move menubar to panel:

1. nautilus

2. gnome-terminal (only shows fileclose)

3. gedit

4. file-roller (complete mess: export header-bar menus but also shows
menus on the window a single dropdown menu screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/XDVD9Ei.png)

5. eog

6. totem

7. mines ( a very big size menu remains on the window screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/ZD0xma0.png )

8. shotwell

9. transmission

Apps that does move menubar properly to the panel

1. evince
2. rhythmbox
3. disks
4. system-monitor
5. system-log (uses headerbar)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1383382] Re: Adding indicator-applet appmenu does not export/move all menu items to panel (Utopic)

2014-10-24 Thread Khurshid Alam
@Dmitry

Yes, for file-roller app (archive manager) the issue is something
similar for both Unity Flashback

On Unity:

1. Global menubar shows traditional horizontal menubar
2. it also export some portion of gtk header-bar menu along with traditional
menubar
3. Some other portion of gtk header-bar menu remains on the application window
( single drop-down menu)which are also in traditional menubar (screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/SKFM9Ya.png)

On Gnome-Flashback (with global menu):
1. No traditional menubar
2. export same portion of gtk header-bar menu as in Unity
3. Same other portion of gtk header-bar menu remains on the application window
as in Unity. (screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/XDVD9Ei.png)

2014-10-22 Thread Khurshid Alam
Of-course indicator-appmenu is installed. Everything works fine in
Unity. I have updated bug description.

I have also noticed that those gtk apps which are not directly patched
by Ubuntu (to restore traditional horizontal menus) uses a single all-
in-one vertical menu, are working fine. For example, Geary or
Claifornia. For those apps indicator-applet-appmenu shows a single
vertical menu in the panel. screenshot:http://imgur.com/gMSAwCe

But when I click on today's date it only shows:

However when I add it to evolution , indicator-datetime shows wrong date

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1324854] [NEW] indicator-datetime in saucy shows wrong time ( date) for some online calendars added in Evolution

2014-05-30 Thread Khurshid Alam
Public bug reported:

After adding a online calendar in evolution (For example, Calendar
Events from remember the milk), indicator-datetime
(13.10.0+13.10.20131023.2-0ubuntu1.1) shows wrong date time for the
any event on that calendar even though it shows correct date time in
Evolution.

My system timezone is Asia/Kolkata (GMT+5:30). Evolution is set to use
system timezone. In remember the milk timezone is set for (GMT+5:30).
However when I add it to evolution , indicator-datetime shows wrong date
time (exactly 5:30 hour ahead). And for local eds calendars it shows
event date time properly. I have attached a screenshot.

$ gsettings get com.canonical.indicator.datetime timezone-name
'Asia/Kolkata Kolkata'

$ cat rtm.ics | grep TZID
TZID:Asia/Kolkata

$ cat rtm.ics | grep X-WR-TIMEZONE

3. It appears ok in evolution.

4. Restart indicator-datetime. Click on the clock menu select the dy
of the event.

The event will appear in wrong time (in my case, 5:30 hour ahead).

I can not reproduce the problem in Trusty. So it only affects saucy.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1303249] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't show evolution/eds calendar color for all-day events (Trusty)

2014-05-27 Thread Khurshid Alam
Also after more testing I found out that, it doesn't show calendar color
or clock icon for online calendars added to evolution. In saucy, for
online calendars, it uses evolution calendar color for all events.
