That finally worked.

Changing launcher icons size works and workspaces also work without
unneeded animations.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1598770] Re: Unity in low-graphics mode has animations and unneeded redraws

2016-07-13 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I've forced the lowgfx setting with command from comment #9 and the fade
in fade out animations are gone.

But I can't change the launcher icons size. The slider in control center
isn't working. Also The workspace switcher can't be enabled and it
disapeared from launcher. I have it enabled in regular gfx.

This is the version of unity-control-center:
15.04.0+16.04.20160705-0ubuntu1

Dash does not handle .desktop files correctly if there are hyphens in

Status in unity-lens-applications package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The Unity dash can fail to display the icon or title from a .desktop
file correctly if it resides under a directory containing a hyphen
  character.

  [Test case]

As an example (on my 16.04 machine):

  $ cat << EOF > test.desktop
  [Desktop Entry]
  Name=Hyphen test
  Exec=/bin/true
  Type=Application
  Icon=/usr/share/icons/suru/apps/256/dash.png
  EOF

  $ chmod +x test.desktop
  $ mkdir ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test
  $ mv test.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test/

Now, open the dash and search for "hyphen". On my machine, I see the
correct icon but no title is displayed underneath.

  $ mv ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen-test
  ~/.local/share/applications/hyphen

Searching for "hyphen" in the dash now shows an entry with the correct
icon and title (but also still shows the defunct previous entry
  without title).

The effect of the hyphenated path seems variable. Some apps show the
wrong icon, some have a missing title, some have both errors.

The problem only seems to be with hyphens in the directories. Hyphens
in the file itself are fine. See the screenshot - Might and Magic 4&5
has had a desktop file installed under a subdirectory with a hyphen,
whereas Heroes of Might and Magic has a desktop file in the root
directory but contains a hyphen in the filename. The latter is shown
correctly, but the desktop files in the former directory are not shown
  properly.

  [Possible Regressions]
  Nothing known.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1598770] Re: Unity in low-graphics mode has animations and unneeded redraws

2016-07-12 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I tested it on my default install by enabling lowgfx through CCSM.

It did switch off all transparency effects. Also there are no preview
animations in Dash but I still have fade in and fade out animation for
showing windows (Super+W).

In my testing using virtual machine that animation was disabled so I
guess it works as intended. Also in virtual machine I can't enable
workspaces.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2015-09-16 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Yes screen gets locked when menus are open since a couple of Unity
releases.

But right click context menus are a different story. For example when I
have right click menu opened in Nautilus the screen goes blank but when
I move the cursor I see the whole screen and then only after clicking
somwhere screen gets locked. So you can't interact with programs but you
can see everything.

Also with right click menu in Opera the screen never gets locked. But
right click menu opened in FireFox, Spotify, Ubuntu Web Browser gets
screen locked at the same time it blanks.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1167453] Re: Apps should have a way to disable HUD

2015-04-19 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Now that the Bug #1159249 is resolved for both 14.04 LTS and 15.04 I
think this bug should get at least a higher priority.

Some users already hit this bug and they were even convinced that HUD
never worked on top of fullscreen windows. This is thread from
Development Version section of Ubuntu Forums.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2273486

Obviously there were be many more users hitting this bug now that HUD
actually works on top of fullscreen windows.

Also there are at least three very popular games that use Alt key in
their default setup for something. Those are Torchlight and Torchlight
II (display of items) and apparently Dota 2.

Workarounds for users involve disabling HUD entirely or disabling it
before launching the game and then enabling it again after. This is of
course very user unfriendly.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2015-04-15 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
As I mentioned earlier this bug was for situation when you locked the
screen with Super+L or Ctrl+Alt+L or from indicator-session monitor
never blanked off.

It is now fixed and when you lock the screen with any of the above
mentioned methods monitor blanks off after 2 seconds.

Any problems with multimonitor setups or screensaver not blanking the
screen should be reported as new bug.

** Description changed:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1072746] Re: window title in panel is missing after the spread

This is still happening in Vivid.

Also if I have opened two maximizied windows of webbrowser (Slimjet in
my case) I sometimes get the title of the wrong webbrowser window
displayed. For example I get title of second window when I activated the
first one with enter.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The unity-panel-service process has been caching D-Bus messages sent
from upstart, effectively leaking memory. The solution replaces the
offending code with a single upstart event emission.

  [Test Case]

  0. Make sure there is a user session job with a dbus rule (eg
unity-greeter-session-broadcast)
  1. Install and run system-load-indicator (indicator-multiload)
  2. Set the update interval to 100ms
  3. Now watch the memory use of init --user increase by 100kb per second
  4. Also open up upstart-monitor to see all the dbus messages being sent

  [Regression Potential]

Some kind of hidden functionality depending on upstart events sent
through D-Bus to the unity-panel-service may have become disconnected.
  Unlikely.

  [Other Info]

The fix for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was cherry picked from the Ubuntu Vivid
Vervet dev release where it has been in regular use for some time
  without apparent regression.

2015-04-11 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I've only checked it in VirtualBox but Franz Hsieh the original bug

The locking isn't immediate but it happens after about 5 seconds so it's

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308037] Re: No results from application scope

2015-03-14 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Looks like I solved the problem on my machine thanks to a recent post in
Ubuntu subreddit.

The post was titled: How I sped up my Ubuntu Dash. The user had problems
with Dash being very slow to show him search results and he found out
that the culprit was Zeitgeist. This thing tracks the files,
applications you used and your other activities.

It turned out that his Zeitgeist history was over two years long! When I
checked on my system I had it dating back to February 2012 so it was
even longer than his.

I deleted the folder /home/your_user_name/.local/share/zeitgeist (almost
700 MB of data) containing the Zeitgeist history just like he did and I
confirm that it sped up Dash. But it also resolved the problem described
in this bug report.

Bug description:
  [The bug]
When the integration of the app menus into the window title bars is turned
on, call of any dialogue from the menu leads to disappearance of the menu.
After that, the window title bar displays only the application title string.
The main menu cannot be seen and cannot be accessed until you switch to another
application and then return. The bug is observed only for unmaximized windows.
The main menu of maximized windows works fine.
This bug is observed only for Qt applications. I have “succeeded” to
reproduce it for VLC, Gwenview, digiKam, Krita, Calliga, VirtualBox,
GoldenDict, Mixx.

  [How to reproduce]
  1. Make sure that “Show the menus for a window” parameter (System Settings -
Appearance - Behavior) is set to “In the window's title bar”.
  2. Start any Qt application, say, one of mentioned above. Let it be, for
example, Gwenview.
  3. Unmaximize the app window.
  4. Activate any dialogue from the main menu. For instance, File - Open... or
Settings - Configure Gwenview...
  5. Press Cancel to close the dialogue.
  6. Hover the mouse pointer over the window title bar.

  [What is expected]
The app menu should appear and be accessible.

  [What happens]
The app menu is not shown. Only the application title is displayed in the
title bar.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1375271] Re: desktop or other past screen contents visible before lockscreen on resume

2015-01-28 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I made some tests but not on real hardware. I used VirtualBox.

I didn't have any of the problems described in this bug report. I
checked with a couple of windowed programs and then with Firefox in
fullscreen and the last test was with Evince in fullscreen. When I
resumed the only thing that displayed was lockscreen (no view of the
desktop or it's past contents).

Adam in his comment didn't specify the version of Unity and I assume he
isn't using the version from -proposed.

On resume from suspend, screen contents are displayed for a brief time
(perhaps 0.5 to 1 sec) before the lock dialog appears.

These screen contents are not always the desktop or open application
beneath the lock screen. On at least one occasion, the screen showed
content from a full-screen video that had been playing in Firefox some
time before the computer had been suspended: neither the video nor its
underlying tab were open anymore, so the image(s) was likely part of a
buffer somewhere. (Needless to say, if the wrong full-screen video had
been watched, depending on the setting, this could be a quite serious
  issue for some users).

  [Test Case]

Suspend and resume the computer (closing the lid or using the session

  [Regression Potential]

This fix unmaps windows when a suspend or shutdown event occurs: it

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1376762] Re: Clicking in the overlay scrollbars thumbs does not scroll previews with scaling higher than 1.5

2015-01-19 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I'm now on fully updated Vivid which I upgraded to directly from 14.04
LTS (sudo sed -i 's/trusty/vivid/g' /etc/apt/sources.list) and this is
still a problem.

I have a regular monitor not HiDPI.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1284981] Re: Locally-integrated menus stop working in Virtualbox and Transmission

2015-01-19 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1312137 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1312137

Looks like the fixes for other LIM not clickable bugs that landed in
15.04 development release resolved this bug.

Besides VirtualBox is a Qt app and this bug is a duplicate of Bug
#1312137 which was fixed recently in Unity release for Vivid.

Locally-integrated menus stop working in Virtualbox and Transmission

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
With (the absolutely awesome) locally-integrated menus enabled, if you
open the VirtualBox the menus initially work as expected, ie they
appear in VirtualBox's titlebar when you hover the mouse over it.

But if you open a popup window by clicking on New or Settings and then
close it, it the menus no longer appear when you hover over the
  titlebar.

One workaround is that the menus start working again if you focus on
another application's window and then click on VirtualBox again so it
regains focus, so it's as if the popup window has retained the focus
for LIM even once it is closed.

Also worth noting is that if you open a VirtualBox popup window and
focus on another application without closing the VirtualBox popup
window, when you go back to the popup window and close it, the menus
  work as expected.

I tried reproducing this using the popup windows in Synaptic, gnome-
disks, and gnome-terminal, but they all work fine.

  I'm running virtualbox-4.3 4.3.8-92456~Ubuntu~raring.

  Desired solution:
If the count indicator only displays one digit it should be a circle e.g (7)
If the count indicator displays two digits it should be a lozenge shape e.g.
two half circles joined by two straight lines e.g. (27)
If the count indicator displays three digits it should be a lozenge shape
e.g. two half circles joined by two straight lines e.g (527)

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

The unity first_run.stamp file should not be in XDG_CACHE_HOME. As it
is a _cache_, it can be ephemeral. Rather, it should be in
XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Once the keyboard shortcut list, for example, has
been presented, I don't need to be told about it again, even if I need
  to purge my ~/.cache directory.

This is a problem at our site, where XDG_CACHE_HOME is stored on a
temporary filesystem, to cut down on the tremendous amount of useless
network traffic between workstations and the user's file server. As a
result, users now have to learn about Unity keyboard shortcuts on
  every single login.

  [ Test Case ]

On a non-fresh install, log in to the Unity desktop. The Shortcuts
  screen should ne be displayed.

  [ Regression Potential ]

The regression potential in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is nil since
XDG_CONFIG_HOME is required to be writable in that distribution.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1 - Lock the screen
2 - From the lockscreen, tell the computer to shut down / restart

  Expected behavior:
  * Session programs are closed while the screen is still locked
  * During shutdown, no user interaction is possible

  Observed behavior:
  * The lockscreen is gone immediately, with the rest of compiz (e.g. window

  * But it's possible to interact with programs that are still running in the
session for about 3 seconds

Observed on an updated Trusty machine, running unity version
  7.2.2+14.04.20140714-0ubuntu1.1

I consider this bug a security vulnerability because during those 3
seconds it could be possible to access and interact with sensitive
information. Yes, it's short, but you could take a picture or even rm

  [Regression Potential]

An improper implementation of the fix for this issue could result in

it showed without window decorations very briefly (much less then 3

Neither appear to be the case.

  [ Other Info ]

The Ubuntu 14.04 LTS SRU has been cherry-picked from upstream Unity
where it has been in development-level production code in Ubuntu
'Vivid Vervet' development release for a few months and has not
  display additional problems.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1411620] Re: Unity requires restart after enabling always-show-menus or LIM

2015-01-17 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I just checked the show desktop, workspaces and the launcher autohide
and they work.

However it looks like the scaling factor stopped working. It works for
me only after Unity restart.

Unity requires restart after enabling always-show-menus or LIM. When

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308037] Re: No results from application scope

2015-01-14 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
This got for me to the point that I always don't get any results in Dash
Home after opening it. Fortunately there is a workaround in my case. If
I open the applications lens directly with shortcut (Super + A) or with
quicklist it gets results and then the Dash Home starts working.

I'm now on fully updated Vivid which was upgraded directly from Trusty
(sudo sed -i 's/trusty/vivid/g' /etc/apt/sources.list).

  - Scrolling left, moves to the previous icon/window

Vertical scrolling has not been touched by the change, so there's no

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1339629] Re: Dash Previews don't scale correctly when the scale factor changes

2014-09-27 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
The previews scale correctly hovewer it seems that overlay scrollbars
are not working. I can't scroll the descriptions using them but mouse
scroll wheel works.

Also the overlay scrollbars work when scaling is set to value ranging
from 0.5 to 1.38. They stop working for me from 1.5 and up to 2.

I also don't have a HiDPI monitor so I only checked on regular one 16:9
1920x1080.

This is a big change that involved lots of changes in the unity dash code,
although we
didn't notice any regression due to this change. At the contrary we improved
a lot the old code we worked on. Although it's still possible that some

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Switching tabs between open source files with different file types in
Eclipse causes the Source and Refactor menus to be empty in the global
  menu bar under Unity.

This is a severe usability problem for many Eclipse users. The fix
proposed has been available in a PPA and is well-tested.

  [Test Case]

  1. Open a new project in Eclipse.
  2. Open two files: one with a .java extension, another with a .txt extension.
  3. Switch between the .java file and the .txt file and back again.
  4. Open the Source or Refactor menu in the Unity global menu bar.

Expected result: menus with menu items
Actual result: empty menus for both

  [Regression Potential]

The fix involves changes to both gtk and unity-gtk-module.

The changes to gtk are minimal and only involve the reversal of a pair
of signal emissions, in a part of the code (GtkMenuTracker) which is
normally used by desktop environments, not typical user applications.
Therefore regression potential for the gtk update is unlikely.

The changes to unity-gtk-module involve emitting show and hide signals
where they were none before has some regression potential for
applications that are explicitly watching for when their menus are
opening and closing. But this is rare for applications to do, and we
likely would have already received bug reports for those that do.
Being completely sure would require extensive testing across all gtk
  apps though.

Both changes together have been available as a PPA, thoroughly tested
  for quite some time now.

  [Other Info]

The changes to unity-gtk-module depend on the changes to gtk, so both
must be tested in simultaneity. Suggested to upload both to trusty-
  proposed at the same time.

Bug description:

The shortcut overlay window listes some truncated keybindings and
descriptions although there's enough horizontal space to show them all.

  [Test case]
The test case for this bug depends a lot on the locale used and thus there's
not an universal way to verify it, this is generally valid for English locale
but should apply to others as well:

  1. In Unity Control Center - Appearance - Behavior enable the workspaces
  2. Hold down the super key unless the shortcut overlay window is not show (if
it's
 supported, minimum resolution is 1366x768)
  3. Both the keybindings and the descriptions should not be ellipsised if
there's enough
horizontal space to present them, for example the Super + Alt + Cursor
ke..
keybinding should be instead Super + Alt + Cursor keys

  [Regression potential]
The view might be too large in some locales and thus not to show at all,
although we should generally handle this as it used to be before.

  --

When I hold down Super I get a popup image detailing the shortcut
keys. There are a few issues with this image which I have filed as
  separate bugs.

Workspaces Text too long to fit. I see Super + Alt + Cursor ke..
Which I presume should say Cursor keys

[Dx-packages] [Bug 741869] Re: Unity/compiz intercepts Super and Alt keypresses from grabbed windows like VMs.

2014-07-16 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
The trusty-proposed packages with suposedly contain fix for this bug
didn't actually fix it. The Super key is still intercepted in windowed
mode and Dash opens in both VirtualBox (tested with 12.04.4 and 14.04)
and in regular session. When running VirtualBox in fullscreen the Dash
opens only in virtual machine.

Also in virt-manager the Super key isn't intercepted when you open Dash
but is intercepted when you hold the Super key to display shortcuts
overlay.

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty, I can no longer use the Super
(windows) key in Virtual Machine Manager. Previously, as long as I had the
Virtual Machine Manager console window in the foreground, I could press the
Super key and the start menu would pop up. Since upgrading to Natty, this no
longer works, and the search box appears in the upper left.

  Also see bug #934921

  [Test Case]
  (1) Install virtualbox or virt-manager and qemu-system, create and boot a
virtual machine
  (2) while in the virtual machine (and it should grab the keyboard), press the
Super key
Expected Result: the super key acts inside the VM (check by install unity on
it or using xev)
Buggy Result: the super key acts in the host and the Unity Dash is displayed

[regression Potential]This patch plays with key grabs and ungrabs:
the most likely potential for regression is (a) the existing grabs
continue and no fix obtains or (2) the grab is not resumed when
returning control from the VM and the Super key does not invoke the
  Unity Dash.

[Regression Potential]Two cases may potentially source regressions.
  (1) windows that need to appear above the lockscreen, such as on-screen
keyboards,(2) applications presenting fullscreen windows using unusual or
non-standard toolkits. It is unlikely that regressions in either of these cases
would be introduced by this bug fix, but rather would be pre-existing problems
not fixed here.

Yes this is much better than having no solution at all and if this is
the best that can be done then it should land in main archives.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

[regression Potential]This patch plays with key grabs and ungrabs:
the most likely potential for regression is (a) the existing grabs
continue and no fix obtains or (2) the grab is not resumed when
returning control from the VM and the Super key does not invoke the
  Unity Dash.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308037] Re: No results from application scope

2014-07-11 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
That's this bug. Mark it as affecting you.

You could reload Unity with this command:

unity /dev/null disown

But it may result in some 3rd party indicators not showing up after the
reload. Note that all the default indicators will work.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1305586] Re: Lock screen is unusable when some windows have a keyboard/mouse grab

2014-07-08 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I confirm what Simon Buchan wrote in his comment.

- I start VirtualBox with Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS as guest, fullscreen
- Wait for Unity lockscreen (timeout set to 1 minute for testing)
- Keyboard input does not seem to respond, mouse works fine.

Now there is other workaround to get input not going to the VM but to
lockscreen text box. I just need to switch off fullscreen for the VM
with keyboard shortcut Host + F (by default Right Ctrl + F) and then
open indicators and finally switch to the lockscreen password text box.

I have only one monitor.

@Simon this particular problem might be resolved with the Unity SRU
update. Christopher Townsend mentioned in comment #23 that the Compiz
SRU doesn't resolve all the problems and that Unity SRU has still some
fixes which should make this bettter.

Wrong number of ticks by application icon in launcher

Bug description:
Since upgrade to 14.04 I've noticed that the number of ticks/markers
that indicates the number of windows a the side of an application's
icon is often incorrect. This seems to apply to Gnome Terminal,
  Firefox and Thunderbird and more.

  Reproduction #1:
  Open a terminal.
Right click the launcher icon and choose New terminal.
  Observe there's only one ticks.
Left click the launcher icon to expose both terminals.
Observe the number of ticks is corrected.
  Choose either, it doesn't matter.
  Close one of the terminals.
  Observe there's still two ticks.

The number of ticks doesn't seem to refresh until something happens in
the launcher - either you click on something in the launcher, but the
ticks seems to correct themselves at other times that I can't quite
  put my finger on.

This is extremely distracting and interrupts work all the time
checking to see what's left open to find that there's nothing there.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1333045] Re: Apps locked in a launcher-position get moved when opening app from dash

Does this happen with other programs or only Writer.

In fresh installs Writer icon is always on third position and then you
have Calc and Impress so maybe that got something to do with this.

For example, I have Thunderbird locked to position 3 on the launcher.
If I open Writer (which is an app not locked to my launcher), it opens
in slot #3 on the launcher and thunderbird is shoved down to position
#4 on the launcher. As a consequence, whenever I tap Super+3 to open
Thunderbird, I end up opening Writer.

Apps in locked positions on the launcher should be fixed and should
not move when a new app is opened. Apps opened from the dash should
appear on the Launcher at the end of the Launcher-List (below the

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2014-06-27 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Doug what you describe in comment #10 is a different bug. This bug was
for situation when you locked the screen with Super+L or Ctrl+Alt+L and
while you had the lockscreen the monitor never blanked off.

BTW I tested the situation described by you in comment #10 and didn't
have any problems.

I set the screen blanking to 1 minute and screen locking to 2 minutes
and the screen didn't turn on even after 5 minutes.

  [Impact]

Some windows will grab the keyboard/mouse and when the lockscreen
kicks in, this window will still have the grab and thusly, ou can
enter your password in the lockscreen.

  [Test case]

  1. Open a window that will hold the grab, such as the ssh password dialog.
  2. Wait for the lock screen to activate.
  3. Enter your password to unlock the screen.

  [Regression potential]

This particular fix doesn't fix all cases, but does fix it for some.
That said, no new regressions are expected.

  Original Description:

My screen just timed out and locked when a password prompt which had a
  grab was displaying.

I couldn't type my password or interact with the indicators.

gnome-screensaver just refuses to lock in this situation, perhaps
unity could do the same unless it's possible to remove and readd the
grabs yourself, but I don't think XLib lets you do that (you can only
  remove your own grabs AFAIK).

This takes you back to the lightdm session screen you can then login to your
user session and it be in the same state

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1086563] Re: Adding a menu item without a label gets treated as a separator even if label is added later

2014-06-25 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I've checked the test case python script and it displayed indicator with
three menu items.

BTW the script should also have:

#!/usr/bin/env python

at the beginning. Maybe it is known for others but I first tried without
that and when it failed I looked at other python scripts to know what's
missing.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308037] Re: No results from application scope

Another try this time I bumped the timeout just like you advised.

However instead of 90 seconds I set it to 120 seconds. I hope it isn't
overkill.

I checked the newest Utopic daily live image and everything works now as

Now we just need the Bug #727903 to be fixed and DnD will be perfect in

Another day and another failure of applications scope. This time I had
to relog three times to get applications in Dash.

I captured bustle.log which should be useful because it runned right
from the start of system. I used the script written by Ted Gould.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1305586] Re: Lock screen is unusable when some windows have a keyboard/mouse grab

2014-06-19 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I'm marking it as verification-done because there are no more problems
with unusable lockscreen. However there are some things which don't work
entirely as expected.

I've tested three programs VMware, VirtualBox and gksudo window summoned
by gdebi. In case of VirtualBox everything worked, the screen turned off
and it was locked and I had no problems unlocking it.

In case of VMware and gksudo the screen turned off but it didn't lock
until I released the keyboard/mouse grab in case of VMware, dismissed
the window in case of gksudo. Until I released the keyboard/mouse grab I
saw the desktop. When I released the grab lockscreen kicked in
immediately and I was able to type my password and unlock.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308037] Re: No results from application scope

2014-06-13 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I have this problem once in a while. I can never be sure if the Dash
will work and display results for applications and sometimes also files.

Today I had to relog two times to get results in Dash home for
applications and the applications lens also didn't work and even the run
command lens (Alt+F2).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 607796] Re: Launcher, Window management - Dragging and holding a selection over an entry in the Launcher should spread out windows belonging to that application

2014-06-10 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Is this really fixed with the release of new packages in Utopic or does
the Bug #727903 needs to be fixed also or is some other pieces missing.

I'm asking because when trying out latest Utopic image (from 9th June)
in live mode the DnD didn't work, there was no spread of windows only
the icon gets highlighted. Also I had very bad graphics glitches after
dropping files on icons where two or more programs were open (for
example two Gedit windows).

@Peter Roos as you can see in the Related branches Christopher already
have a fix for this bug and the branch has been approved several hours
ago.

Now we have to wait for SRU (Stable Release Update) of Unity with this
fix. Unfortunately the SRU process sucks from user perspective and the
fix might be weeks away from actually hitting Trusty repositories.

If you don't lock it manually and just pause the video and let it lock

[Regression Potential]Two cases may potentially source regressions.
  (1) windows that need to appear above the lockscreen, such as on-screen
keyboards,
  (2) applications presenting fullscreen windows using unusual or non-standard
toolkits. It is unlikely that regressions in either of these cases would be
introduced by this bug fix, but rather would be pre-existing problems not fixed
here.
  (3) Indicator menus might be not being drawn

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291461] Re: Lockscreen: keyboard layout switching shortcuts not working

2014-05-28 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Unfortunately the fix doesn't work as it should.

I can change keyboard layout on lockscreen but when the screen unlocks
the keyboard layout switches to witchever layout was set when locking
tha screen. For example if I lock screen with layout set to English or
Persian and then change layout on the lockscreen to Polish and unlock
screen the layout will be set to English or Persian not Polish.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Change keyboard layout to Persian
2. Lock the screen
3. Change layout to Polish
4. Unlock the screen

Expected after unlocking the screen keyboard layout is set to Polish.

What is happening the layout after unlock is set to Persian.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1319542] Re: Unity urgent animation needs an adjustable time length.

Title:
Unity urgent animation needs an adjustable time length.

Status in Ayatana Design:
  New
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Ubuntu 14.04, fully up to date, Unity Version:
  7.2.0+14.04.20140416-0ubuntu1

The Unity launcher in my setup is not hidden. It is always visible.

The current behavior of the urgent animation goes like this:

  1) An application needs attention (such as an instant message through Empathy
or Skype)
  2) Icon wiggles for about one second
  3) Once the wiggle is over, the icon remains highlighted

The problem is with step 2. The icon never reinitializes any sort of
motion to catch the user's eye. People are busy. People are frequently
multitasking. In a lot of cases, people are using multiple monitors or
very widescreen monitors and their field of vision is in an entirely
different place altogether. There really should be some sort of
repeated motion that takes place to grab the users attention, thereby
signifying that an application needs attention.

A few possible solutions would be:

  A) Let the icon wiggle indefinitely until the user clicks on it. This
is a bit obnoxious, because you have to consider the situations where
a user might notice it, but might be too deep in a specific project to
address it right away. This would stand as a potential distraction
and/or annoyance, though it *would* eliminate the chances of the
  notification going missed.

  B) To allow the user to adjust the time frame in which the wiggle
animation takes place. That way instead of one second, perhaps the
user might want it to last 10 seconds, or 30 seconds, etc. There are
times where I am engaging in an active conversation but switching to
another application frequently. At times, I miss a message altogether
despite the fact I'm looking at the screen. This is entirely due to
the short time frame in which the urgent animation is moving. The
length of time in which it moves is, more times than not, simply not
long enough to be noticed. If the one second span could be adjusted,
and say I have it set to 5 seconds, or 10 seconds, surely I would
  notice it.

  C) The most optimum solution in my opinion is to make the urgent
animation continually come up over a specified span of time. Example,
I receive a notification from Empathy, but I miss it. It wiggles and
shortly thereafter stops wiggling, thereby just sitting idle but with
the icon highlighted. A short time later, perhaps 30 seconds later, it
wiggles again, and continues onward in 30 second intervals
indefinitely until the user gives attention to the application
  requesting it.

Option C would circumvent a potential annoyance factor of option A,
and it would work around the fact that option B) would require another
thing to change in the settings menu. All in all, there *really*
should be a way for a user to more easily see that an application
needs attention. A simple one second wiggle is not enough. A
background highlight is not enough as it does not move to be noticed.
You only notice a background highlight if you specifically look at the
icon, whereas a motion-based notification (wiggle, etc) actually
'grabs' your attention to be noticed.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and hard work. If I can be of
any further assistance please let me know. Thank you again!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2014-05-01 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
@LGB [Gábor Lénárt] that you don't see input field doesn't mean that you
can't type password and unlock the screen.

I was trying to reproduce a bug that some people described about
fullscreen YouTube videos showing on top of Unity lock screen. I managed
to get once a screen locked which would flash and without text input
field visible just like on your screenshot but I just typed my password
and unlock normally.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1314294] [NEW] You can get access to Terminal from lock screen by bypassing it with right click on indicators

2014-04-29 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
Public bug reported:

As the title says you can bypass lock screen by right clicking on
indicators several times and if you had Terminal window opened and
focused you can issue commands.

How to reproduce:

1. Open Terminal and play some music with mplayer
2. Lock the screen using one of the shortcuts (Super+L or Ctrl+Alt+L)
3. Right click a couple times on keyboard indicator
4. Now you can use Ctrl+C shortcut to stop your mplayer playing music in
Terminal and issue any command you want. You can also open another Terminal
window.

I had no problem to start this way synaptic with synaptic-pkexec command
and then typing my password. This all went to Unity under lock screen.

command and then typing my password. This all went to Unity under lock
  screen.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283775] Re: Launcher: icon pips are not always updated properly

2014-04-15 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I would add that if for example I have opened Terminal and Nautilus and
the focus is on Nautilus opening new Terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut
or by right clicking on icon will result in pips updated properly.

Pips will not update if I open another window for the app that I have in
focus.

For example I have Terminal window in focus and in the background
maximized Chrome window and Nautilus then I open second and third
Terminal window but launcher still displays one pip. Changing focus to
another window or other interaction with environment will update pips.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1292446] Re: lockscreen: on autolock on suspend the fade does not complete before suspend leaving desktop partially visible for a short period on resume

2014-03-15 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
The new Unity lock screen doesn't have problem with application grabbing
the mouse (indicators, menus, etc.) but only if the mouse cursor is
outside of that menu. When you open menu of application (global or LIM)
or indicator then move the cursor outside of that menu and application
the screen will blank off and lock.

When you have open indicator or menu of application (global or LIM) and
mouse is focused on that menu the screen will not blank off and of
course it will also not lock.

This is still a bug in gnome-screensaver and X server just like the one
that you linked because the new Unity lock screen still uses gnome-
screensaver.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2014-03-14 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
@Nick your bug is different. I don't get a second lock off the screen
after unlocking.

In this case the screen doesn't blank off at locked screen and when I
unlock it after the normal timeout it goes to blank off mode.

The turning off the screen happens even if I used my mouse or keyboard.
However I don't need to unlock the screen twice.

Yes I have gnome-screensaver installed.

apt-cache policy gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver:

  Kandydująca: 3.6.1-0ubuntu11
  Tabela wersji:

Default for screen blanking is 5 minute and I didn't change that
setting. In my description I meant that screen didn't blank off even
after 10 minutes of waiting on lock screen.

NOTE: I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. There were comment

This is a small usability bug for the Local Menus in Ubuntu 14.04.
This will probably not be experienced by most people and I pretty much
just stumbled across this bug myself so it probably wouldn't be a high
priority but I wanted to submit it anyway.

The bug occurs when running as root or invoking root with gksu.
Another bug is found when invoking with gksu using the -k option to
  stay in the user environment.

I purged the PPA today and reinstalled it again because you asked for it
in mailing list.

Normally the translations are there for this labels in System
settings...

All settings
Appearance

but in unity-control-center I don't see the Polish labels. Also all the
labels in Appearance settings still display in English language but
normally they are translated. There is one label in Brightness and
blocking settings still in English.

The rest of the labels display properly in Polish except Text Entry and
Backup (which looks different than in 13.10) but that isn't translated
normally.

The settings for Online Accounts and Privacy finally work but clicking
on the latter results in window becoming to wide and it also crashed.

Bug description:
Ubuntu/Unity uses GNOME Control Center as the application to configure
the Unity session. We've made a lot of changes appropriate for Ubuntu
and Unity (61 patches) which makes it hard to maintain and creates a
conflict for Ubuntu GNOME to use the control center. Unity 7 will be
replaced by Unity 8 in the future which has a new settings interface.

So we can continue to remain on the current version of GNOME Control
Center but allow Ubuntu GNOME to continue to update we will create a
new project lp:unity-control-center which is a copy of GNOME Control
Center 3.6 but with appropriate renaming so both can be installed.

A number of packages that refer to gnome-control-center need to be
updated to refer to unity-control-center (see bug tasks).

A PPA for testing is https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive
  /unity-control-center

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1257505] Re: Create Unity Control Center so can remain on old GNOME Control Center version

2013-12-12 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
After installing todays packages from PPA I observed several problems.

The icon in the launcher still doesn't launch u-c-c but gnome-control-
center.

The dimensions of the u-c-c are not as they supposed to be and the
window is wider but the height remains unchainged from the dafault.

I couldn't use Privacy and Online Accounts settings. When I clicked
their icons the settings didn't load only the location bar changed.

When I closed the u-c-c window it opened again and again and again.
