[Dx-packages] [Bug 1841382] Re: Various programs crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash() from g_hash_table_lookup_node() / g_hash_table_lookup() from accountsservice 0.6.55-0ubuntu5/6

2019-09-05 Thread Robert Ancell
The main issue is when I updated to 0.6.55 the new Meson based build
systemd didn't build with systemd support by default. So I've uploaded a
build with this enabled. There may still be an underlying issue, but
this should fix the eoan issues.

2019-09-04 Thread Robert Ancell
If the above theory is correct then this commit caused the bug:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/accountsservice/accountsservice/commit/9b4108755a6e1f5f04d80fef92dd3f81423857ad

This commit came when we migrated from 0.6.45 to 0.6.50, which explains
why this is being seen in disco and eoan.

2019-09-04 Thread Robert Ancell
It looks like it's crashing in this code:

username = act_user_get_user_name (user);
if (g_hash_table_lookup (priv->system_users_by_name, username) != NULL)
{

and username is probably NULL.

A possible cause of this is the user object for some reason might not
have a DBus proxy backing it.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1789502] Re: Update to 0.6.50

2018-09-06 Thread Robert Ancell
I'm also looking at dropping the XHasMessages, BackgroundFile and
KeyboardLayouts patches, as these are all obsolete with LightDM 1.26 -
Is there anywhere else that might be using them?

Does anyone know if the InputSources and FormatsLocale is still
applicable and which components use it? If they are still used I'd like
to fix those to use the AccountsService extension mechanism - then we
can drop the patches.

2018-09-03 Thread Robert Ancell
Gunnar - could you perhaps have a look at 0010-set-language.patch? In
particular I'm not sure how we want to do the fallback language property
handling in src/user.c - the new code uses autogenerated property
handling so we can't intercept it as easily. I guess we could just set
the fallback values on initialization?

Bug description:
Vala 0.31.1 deprecated the "Deprecated" code attribute, replacing it

  I.e. in unity.vapi:

  [Deprecated (replacement = "AppInfoManager.get_default")]
  public static Unity.AppInfoManager get_instance ();

  Should instead be:

  [Version (deprecated = true, replacement = "AppInfoManager.get_default")]
  public static Unity.AppInfoManager get_instance ();

This causes a deprecation warning when compiling against it,
regardless of whether any deprecated calls are actually being made by
the code being compiled. While a minor issue, it would be good to have
fixed since it makes it impossible to develop against it with fatal
warnings enabled, which is bad for QA.

The Unity build seems to generate that file as per usual (as a valac
build artefact) so I would assume this should be fixed by a simple
rebuild using vala >= 0.31.1, but surely the version of libunity-dev
that shipped with bionic would have been rebuild against valac that
ships with bionic (0.40)? So I'm not sure why Deprecated is still
  present in the vapi.

Recent accountsservice update causes login window to hang

Bug description:
  Hi,

  The recent 0.6.35-0ubuntu7.1 update (see
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1290785)
seems to have removed the UID_MAX check, which could be used to hide
users from the login window. In a large organization where many
thousands of users are present on our systems, we relied on the
UID_MAX setting in /etc/login.defs to prevent accounts-daemon from
trying to frob all our accounts. accounts-daemon's performance is so
poor, that not having the UID_MAX check causes lightdm to hang for
5-10mins while accounts-daemon tries to look for something in every
  users home folder.

I've already done things like set the login window to require the user
to enter their username and password rather than list all users, but
the login window still hangs while accounts-daemon is doing its thing.

  The behavior I see, is:

  1) just after boot, there's a black screen, right after the plymouth splash
disappears, for 2-3 minutes before lightdm appears
  2) You type a username into the username field and press 'Tab'
  3) lightdm appears to hang for 5-10mins before the cursor moves to the
password field. During this time, I see an accounts-daemon spawn for each user
on the system, sequentially (in alphabetical order). Once the last user's
accounts-daemon process finishes, the cursor moves to the password field.

This not only happens on first boot, but every time a user logs out
and the system returns to the login window.

Any chance we can have the UID_MAX check back? Or some equivalent?
This is causing a serious problem for us!

  Thanks!

Lock/Switch stay in session menu even if disabled

Status in Session Menu:

Status in indicator-session source package in Trusty:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Session indicator no longer honours the lockdown settings that worked in
12.04 LTS. There are no alternative settings to perform the same behaviour.
This functionality is required in large installations where users are not
allowed to perfom these actions (e.g. corporate installations / labs / public
terminals).

  [Test Case]

  1. Create the file /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/lockdown.gschema.override:
  [org.gnome.desktop.lockdown]
  disable-lock-screen=true
  disable-user-switching=true
  2. Reboot
  3. Log into a session

  Expected result:
Opening the session indicator should not show any options to lock the screen
or switch the user.

  Observed result:
"Lock/Switch Account" and user list shown for installations with more than
one user. "Lock" shown for installations with one user.

  [Regression Potential]
Potential for modified options to be shown/hidden incorrectly. Risk reduced
by using existing regression tests, adding new test for lockdown and manually
testing each case.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-12-21 Thread Robert Ancell
Hi Jememy. Nice work on the patches!

I've been working with the AccountsService upstream and I'd like to work
out how we can get these patches in.

I think we can make this work with a couple of changes:
- Instead of making the CreateUserEncrypt() method you could make a new account
type ACCOUNT_TYPE_ENCRYPTED (src/user.h). Since upstream can't currently
support this though 'useradd' it should then fail the call when this account
type is encrypted.
- We then can carry the change in Debian/Ubuntu by modifying
debian/patches/0002-create-and-manage-groups-like-on-a-debian-system.patch (I'm
working on merging in 0006-adduser_instead_of_useradd.patch which should be in
the same patch).

Please open a bug on bugzilla.freedesktop.org with the patch and I will
help review there.

I'm also working on how we can get our adduser changes upstream so we
don't have to carry this patch either
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73838)

I've pinged upstream but I think everyone is on break now (and I will be
for the next two weeks too) but will pick this up when I'm back.

Oh, there was one last point:
- You should add a "SupportsEncrypted" property (or similar name) to the
AccountsService daemon. That way you can make the g-c-c patch DTRT and also
make it more upstreamable.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1633319] Re: memory leak in indicator-datetime

2017-03-27 Thread Robert Ruddy
This also impacts 17.04 as installed on March 27th.

The leak comes as soon as I turn on evolution-data-server. If I turn
that off, logout and back in then I don't have a problem.

I concur this was also an issue in 16.10.

  memory leak in indicator-datetime

Bug description:
After upgrading from 16.04 to 16.10 on the System76 Serval WS

3.7GB up to 32 GB in 30 seconds. The system kills the indicator-
datetime-service process and indicator-datetime-service restarts and
memory consumption repeats until killed again. All swap memory is
  consumed in this pattern.

GNOME-Flashack:GNOME for this)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389336] Re: Use geoclue-2.0

2016-06-06 Thread Robert Ancell
I had a look at what is required for libunity-webapps and it just
appears to be using geoclue to work out what country you are in to show
the appropriate Amazon store. Since Geoclue 2.0 doesn't provide this (it
just gives a co-ordinate) the easiest solution is to make libunity-
webapps contact http://geoip.ubuntu.com/lookup directly to get the
country.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389336] Re: Use geoclue-2.0

2016-05-30 Thread Robert Ancell
I've proposed a change to geoip.ubuntu.com to provide a Google/Mozilla
Location Service compatible API. This means we can configure Geoclue 2.0
to use this service.

Then I propose we drop geoclue (1.0) and ubuntu-geoip from the archive.

translating into multiple languages.

The only open point I can read from your comment is actually this one.

How do you suggest to proceed? Would it be worthwhile maintaining a
parallel database and what could the potential contribution of users
look like to this project?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1577414] Re: Adding time zones to locations of indicator-datetime

2016-05-09 Thread Robert Orzanna
Dear Matthew,

Thanks for raising these two issues.

1. The use of time zones instead of city names is very common in meeting
plannings. For instance, I receive frequent invitations to calls that
are expressed in "16:00 EDT time". People in these meetings rarely refer
to their location as a city.

2. This is a good point. Upon user input of, for instance ACT, could the
system detect that there are two with the same name and ask the user to
pick the correct one?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1577836] [NEW] Support for California calendar in "Add event..."?

Dear all,

Would it be possible for the indicator-datetime and its "Add Event..."

California provides some added functionality over the default Calendar

properly supported.

Thankfully,

Support for California calendar in "Add event..."?

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Dear all,

Would it be possible for the indicator-datetime and its "Add Event..."
entry to support the calendar app California [1]?

California provides some added functionality over the default Calendar
app (e.g. recurring events) and it would thus be great if California
  was properly supported.

  Thankfully,

  ~Robert

Title:
  notify-osd needs a "privacy mode"

Status in notify-osd package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: notify-osd

A problem with notify-osd is that it can often display conversation
content from IM or IRC in situations where you would prefer those
sitting around you to not see it over your shoulder, such as
conferences. An example is if your partner sends you a private message
with some possibly comedic yet embarrassing content, and your
  colleague or friend sees it.

An ideal solution would be to have a feature in indicator-applet-
session that is akin to Private Browsing Mode in Firefox, which would
stop showing notification bubbles around conversations. This could be
a checkbox menu in the indicator-applet-session called Privacy Mode.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 878836] Re: [FFe] Unity Greeter - Use Unity Greeter to fulfil lock screen as well as login functions

2016-04-03 Thread Robert Ancell
This is a problem that won't be solved in Ubuntu until we use Unity8 +
Mir for displaying. Other systems are already using greeters as
lockscreens, so the work has been done for this.

Closing lightdm and unity-greeter tasks to reduce any confusion.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1553592] Re: 16.04 casper 15_autologin file contains obsolete lightdm configuration

2016-03-06 Thread Robert Ancell
While this configuration is old, it will continue to work. However, if
this file is changed then accountsservice should also be updated to look
in the new location.

I did look at this a while ago and decided it was too much to fix (and
I'm not confident enough in this area) when I changed the configuration
file conventions. It should be updated however.

It should be fixed at some point though.

Bug description:
  /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/casper-bottom/15autologin

the lightdm section of the file contains a lightdm configuration that
is incorrect for 15.10 and later

for example it writes out /root/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

according to the lightdm wiki this should be
  /root/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/xyz.conf

Additionally using [SeatDefaults] is wrong. Again according the wiki
[SeatDefaults] is obsolete and should be [Seat:*]

Think this is probably why manual live CD creators and those who use
Pinguy ISO Builder cannot create a lightdm autologin live CD

[Dx-packages] [Bug 830348] Re: desktop contents briefly visible on resume from suspend before lock dialog

Status in Compiz:
  New
Status in unity-2d:

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in unity-2d package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This seems like a recent regression on Oneiric (or perhaps I haven't
  noticed it before):

On resume from suspend, the contents of the desktop are often briefly
visible before being hidden behind the lock screen. This is a
security problem if there happens to be sensitive information on the
  screen.

  =Analysis from mdeslaur=
  This is likely what happens:

1- Something grabs mouse: ie: virtual machine window, or GTK menu in an
application or an indicator
2- Screensaver attempts to start, but cannot get exclusive lock on mouse
  3- DPMS turns monitor black
4- User moves mouse, which turns the screen back on
5- Mouse movement causes mouse to get ungrabbed by vm window or gtk menu
6- Screensaver can now grab mouse, and starts

This is all related to the fact that X does not have an API that will
let the screensaver tell an application to release mouse and keyboard
  grabs.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1300722] Re: hud-service is eating up 100% of one of my CPUs in a poll loop

2015-10-15 Thread Robert
Today I experienced this problem for the first time. The machine that had
the problem has been in operation for many years without this issue.

I want to draw attention to what ouahabix wrote in this thread back on
2014-07-27
as that would appear
to be the same as my experience. My machine is a MythTV recorder with a large
number of video recordings (1365 recordings across two directories). I do not
often use Nautilus on that machine, or use Nautilus in my video directory.

But in the last few days, I had been asked to copy one of the MythTV recordings
for someone and so I wanted to copy a recording to another machine and I
used Nautilus to do that. I did not close Nautilus. About 24 hours later I
noticed the machine
was sluggish, and I notice hud-service was using a lot of CPU.

I am running 14.04 and keep the machine up to date with maintenance. I suspect
that ouahabix was on to something way back then. It may not the only cause, but
that observation and my experience are remarkably similar given that I haven't
experienced the problem until I did what ouahabix said would cause the problem.

2015-09-27 Thread Robert Ancell
The stack traces are suggesting the crash is due to there not being a
cached property "UUIDs" for the device. We check for NULL in the other
properties, not for this one.

This is probably bad that this property doesn't exist but we still
shouldn't crash.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1483205] Re: unity-control-center needs bluetooth packages

2015-08-10 Thread Robert Ancell
This is because unity-control-center needs the GSettings schema from
indicator-bluetooth and schemas need to be installed otherwise the
control center would crash. Otherwise indicator-bluetooth would just be
a recommends.

A solution would be to make an indicator-bluetooth-schemas package that
just contained the schema.

Note this only happens in the tests with strings > 15 characters in

mallocing the contents.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1475623] Re: zeitgeist ftbfs with GCC 5

2015-07-23 Thread Robert Ancell
I think the issue is the std::string object is going out of scope in the
tests. The tests are like this:

g_assert_cmpstr (std::string ("scheme_no_spaces_in_uris"), ==,
StringUtils::MangleUri("scheme:no spaces in uris").c_str ());

Inside the g_assert_cmpstr macro the two strings are stored in
variables. Nothing is left holding the result of MangleUri () so the
result from c_str () is no longer valid. I guess GCC 5.1 is more
agressive in destroying the std:string than it used to be?

2015-07-21 Thread Robert Ancell
The first build log is implying that Mir is not built / linekd correctly:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmirprotobuf.so.0: undefined reference to
`google::protobuf::internal::WireFormatLite::WriteStringMaybeAliased(int,
std::string const&, google::protobuf::io::CodedOutputStream*)'

The linked build in comment 1 is for telephony-service, not zeitgeist.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1432484] Re: ctrl+alt+t hot key doesn't open terminal

2015-06-27 Thread Robert L Walton
I have the same symptoms as #16. ctrl+alt+t doesn't work, but
ctrl+alt+y, for example, does work if I assign ctrl-alt-y to the
terminal shortcut. I have 15.04 running on a System 76 Kudu
Professional. ctrl-alt-l doesn't work either.

Also, as #8 mentioned, the PrtSc/SysRq button appears to do nothing --
it certainly doesn't fire up snapshot. But I can, for example, replace
the "print" shortcuts with ctrl-alt-p, alt-p, shaft-alt-p, ctrl-alt-[,
alt-[ and shift-alt-[, and I get normal snapshot behavior with the
revised shortcuts. It is like there is something else interfering with
the ctrl-alt-t, ctrl-alt-l and PrtSc/SysRq shortcuts.

Other than those items, I appear to be 100% functional.
