[Dx4win] RE: States from Sections
I have developed a method to transform ARRL Sections to States and enter them in the appropriate place in DX4WIN when importing contest logs. So far I have only done this for TR-Log. Is there anyone else interested in this? If so let me know. Tod. K0TO
[Dx4win] Programatically inserting County into DX4WIN files
In addition to the couple of other problems mentioned, the city and state are often not enough to uniquely identify the actual location. As an example, there are 6 (maybe more?) municipalities in New Jersey named either Washington, Washington Township, Township of Washington, etc. Each of these are in a different county. As a further issue, this past weekend I was operating mobile in upstate New York, and was able to hand out a new county (Cayuga, NY) to a friend who I was speaking to. Of course, my FCC license / QRZ.com entry shows that I'm in Bergen County, NJ, which of course I wasn't at the time. Operating mobile seems like it could at least flag the entry to say that the default information may not be valid (put something in the QSO comments field?), perhaps if your program detected multiple names within the same state it could do something similar? Good luck with your project. 73, David, K2DBK At 03:53 AM 11/21/2006, Lee Hallin wrote: >Hi all, > > I'm new to the list so sorry if this has been asked before. > > I am in the process of writing a program that looks up a > state, city combination and determines the county name. [Dx4win] County identification
That's a good point about a station NOT being located in the county of his address. Happens all the time and I don't know a fool-proof way to avoid it. One can always ask the operator's actual county location during the QSO, and I've done this sometimes. Another problematic situation for logging programs is the cities that are independent entities and can be claimed for ONE adjoining county. DX4WIN has no (apparent) way to flag these for future determination. I'd welcome a way to put a notation or perhaps a symbol in the "County" field that's not used elsewhere in the program to flag/search for such an entry. Yes, I know one can put a note in the "Notes for the QSO" field, as I now do to log the operator's city. The program needs a dedicated city/town/county field! The ability to log and track counties is the ONLY reason I initially purchased DX4WIN. 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lee, I imagine you have this covered already but, just to be sure - the city and state is not especially reliable for determining what county the station is actually in. The nearest Post Office is sometimes in the adjoining county. I think the only truly accurate method is with map coordinates (key word 'think'). I don't know how county is being determined in the call sign lookup pages any more so maybe that is reasonably accurate. Just a though on something to possibly watch out for. Good luck with your project and yes, I would be interested in seeing what you come up with. It would most certainly be a useful tool. [Dx4win] Programatically inserting County into DX4WIN files
Hi all, I'm new to the list so sorry if this has been asked before. I am in the process of writing a program that looks up a state, city combination and determines the county name. Then I want to update the DX4WIN .DXL file (directly or indirectly) with the county. I want to make sure I do it in a way that will allow DX4WIN to"notice" that I added the County and alter any tables, counters etc that it may maintain. Ideas I had to accomplish this task: 1) Do an Export to a .DXQ/.DXN file. Modify the County field in the .DXQ file and then re-Import the modified file. 2) Export in .ADIF format. Fix the values and then re-import. 3) Modify the .DXL file directly. If this is done, will County totals/counts get updated? If anyone is interested in what I come up with, let me know and I'll email you once I have something working. 73, Lee N7NU
