[Dx4win] Lost power....lost QSO's

2008-02-17 Thread Glen and Pam
Well, it has happen again. I've been working a few cw dx contest entries
today and here in midwest we are getting a big snow storm.
The power has gone off a couple of times and as result DX4WIN has closed
unexpectedly. I know all the supposed safeguards of the
"backup files" but often when the power goes suddenly the computer fails to
make a clean reboot as well. If the program comes up but locks
up and I don't get a chance to say restore backup I loose the updated
data. I will ask againIS there a way to make this logging
program write to the hard after each contact? I don't want any buffered
time delay. I just want to hit enter and when I see the Q in the log screen
it is written to disk. I use an external disk drive to backup off the hard
drive but I must also manually make it write to that drive. Also, I am
not interested in dialog suggesting power battery backups, etc. I would
just like to know if this problem has ever been solved inside the DX4WIN.

Thanks,

Glen K0JGH

[Dx4win] Automatic call sign lookup on QRZ, Question

2008-02-17 Thread Dave Weiss
I have implemented this feature in DX4Win and it works nicely with one
exception. It seems that the QRZ windows stack up on my PC (XP Pro) (I have
a second screen) and eventually, the system comes to an out of memory state
where the mouse pointer does not follow movements of the mouse.

Question is: How can I get the QRZ window to close after a lookup so that
the windows do not stack up? Any experience out there with this one please.

I've been doing the same as John, using a new group number for each
contest. I wasn't thinking of running out as up to this thread I
thought I could go to 999. One nice thing is that your labels will
print with the contest name this way as Jim said.

Hi All;

I maybe missed the point, but I really wonder what you guys are doing to
even think about running out of Group numbers.

I don't understand anyone's need really to group by year or by contest;
since you would still need to do a search operation (F8) to filter by
Group. You might as well do a search by date in that case. I use
Groups in my main log to differentiate from G3NKC and G3NKC/P, and I
think I set up GQ3NKC - so call sign variants.

For my GD contest operations, I currently hold separate logs for GD0EMG,
MD6V, and MD4K; even though I have been thinking about the merits of
merging those logs (might be nice to see a complete DXCC achievement,
for instance); but I often think these would be outweighed by the
overhead when doing the QSLling chores (when someone requests a card, I
normally QSL all QSO's with our particular contest call. I might end up
selecting QSL's for all call's; meaning I have 3 labels that would have
to go on 3 cards). ON balance I think those logs will stay separate.

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure how you allocate your group numbers. I started giving a
number to every contest, IE CQ WPX CW,2005,2006,2007 ETC and could see I
would fast run out of numbers. On a suggestion from a local user I now
only have one number for each contest and use the same number each year.
Its a simple matter to filter by year or mode as and when you require.
This has reduced my groups considerably.

Group numbers is a nice feature and I use it a lot. I just wish we were
allowed more than 254 group numbers. At my present rate I will have all
254 numbers used by CQ WPX CW this year. When that happens I will have
to look at other options to accomplish this or look at different
software that will do what I want.

What about using group numbers - assign a different group to each
imported log?

[Dx4win] Group Numbers

2008-02-17 Thread Erkki Heikkinen
I agree it takes some time to understand how the group numbers and the
selection works. It pays to study them - they are a very powerful tool.

I have all my QSOs from different countries/callsigns in one log. I have
a group number for each of the 38 different calls I have been using. At
home I have a selection "OH DXCC" with those calls which are valid for
that. The statistics show what I need from OH land.

When I work someone using the "OH DXCC" selection, I still get a list of
all the QSOs with that particular station in the "same call" window and
I can see from what countries/callsigns I have worked that station, even
when it is my first QSO to that station from Finland. People are
sometimes surprised when I say "hello Joe, this is our first QSO from
Finland but I have worked you from France, Bosnia and East Timor".

I do not have a need to separate the contest QSOs from other QSOs. With
F8 I can find any QSO. Only when there is a busted call (my mistake) I
need to go to that date and time to find what it might be.

Yes, answering contest QSLs is sometimes time consuming when the card
has another callsign (or several callsigns) printed and the actual used
contest callsign is only on the label with very small print... But that
has nothing to do with DX4Win.

took more than a little bit of trial and error to get it working the way
it was intended.

[Dx4win] Multiple QSOs change on QSO NOTES - Group Numbers

2008-02-17 Thread Dave Sharred
Hi Thor

Had chance to look at this; had some problems getting the SELECTION to work
though !!

It's OK now; I seem to have lost my filters in the main log (now fixed)

So FILTER (F8) is only a temporary filter; by pressing ESC you go back to
the full log

SELECTION looks like a filter that applies until you decide that you are
finished, and look at the whole log; right ?

I see the advantages in reporting DXCC status, say by SELECTION call sign,
too. It would meet my criteria for combining my GD logs, and for anyone else
who had travelled and wants to keep their logs integrated, but be able to
chase awards separately.

For those who are setting Groups per contest; I only see it as a way to
correlate their country score; but I would use the contest logger to do
that. I see no real advantage to assigning a group to every contests, but
that's my opinion.

Maybe by groups of contest; for instance if I wanted to see how many IOTA's
I had ever worked in IOTA contests, then that might be good to define an
IOTA CONTEST selection, same with CQWW etc...

Has anyone found a practical limit to log size in numbers of QSO's; not that
I'm there yet, but I know that the bigger the log the longer it takes to
load (and the bigger the file size!!!)

Dave,

I have more than 30 groups, operations from several dxcc countries and
multiple callsigns from within TF all in the same log file (TF4M.DXL).

When filtering by Group the F8 search option is not used, rather you use
SELECTION which you previously define to choose between the call signs.
This way, you can create a selection which covers all your operations from a
certain dxcc entity for example your GD operations and you will then have
all DX4WINs reporting available for that group.

You should import your various GD operations into your main log, each into
their separate groups. You can then open the SAME CALL window and you
will see there previous contacts with a station and the call you used to
make the QSO.

Even if you import the GD logs into your main log, they stay separate when
you start using the SELECTION feature.
