[Dx4win] member column

2014-11-23 Thread Hal Kennedy
Moving DX4WIN to a new computer and I have everything the same except
the member column in the spots window - that's the window that gives an
L for example indicating LOTW. The column is there - it just doesn't
populate. Anyone know how to turn this on?

Re: [Dx4win] Separate logs and merge

2013-08-29 Thread Hal Kennedy
Thanks Mel and also Costos for some interesting and thought provoking
info. BTW, thanks to Jim, the answer to the question was/is, you have
to be in Expert mode to get groups to work..

Hal N4GG

Hi Hal,

I have to argue a bit against Jim.

I selected DX4WIN for at the time being the only log-program that
could handle several callsigns through the group feature. I was and
still am the QSL manager for SK0HS, a scout station that changes QTHs
and callsigns.

We started with special JOTA -calls e.g SM5XAC, SM0XAC, SK0XAC. All of
these are easy to separate by date.

Then we became a formal clubstation; SK0HS. We were and still are
active not only in JOTA but from different camps in different
districts within Sweden and we could thus use calls like SK0HS/0 and
SK0HS/5. We could in one year be active from 2-4 different locations
within the 0 and 5th districts so I used the group feature to separate
them; one group for each QTH and callsign, e.g. SK0HS/5 from Vassaro
EU084 and SK0HS/5 Hed, i.e. mainland Sweden. I could now use the
filter feature to combine all SK0HS/5 QTHs to examine the DXCC status
for all QTHs within the 5th-district or look at the whole data set by
selecting All QSOs as filter. To use filters is also possible in the
example Jim gave with his novice call too, however by using groups and
filter it will be possible to separate calls even if they are not used
in sequence. So, if just two callsigns are used and they are separated
in time with one before the other then it may be easier to separate
them with a time filter as Jim suggest but if not I will recommend the
group feature.

Hal, I'm not trying to single you out, but I'm not sure why anyone
needs group #s for multiple callsigns (from the same QTH) in a single
log, if there is no overlap by date. For example, I have WN1UHA,
WA1UHA and AD1C QSOs my log. I do not use group numbers to separate
them. I created three Selections by date that cover the date ranges
these calls were used.

If I want DXCC status that covers the whole log, I do nothing special.
If I want DXCC status for, say, WN1UHA, then I choose the WN1UHA
by-date selection. I can always use an F8 search with a date range
(over the whole log) if I want to find something particular, and I
don't feel like using a group selection.

What am I missing, other than the case where I may have made QSOs as
WA1UHA in the morning, then as AD1C in the afternoon after my license
arrived in the mail? Why do people unnecessarily want to assign group
#s to callsigns? How would I then identify just Novice Roundup QSOs I
made as WN1UHA, because if I create a new group number for them
(that's different from the WN1UHA group #), then those QSOs will no
longer show up in my WN1UHA group.

[Dx4win] Separate logs and merge

2013-08-28 Thread Hal Kennedy

Hope I am not beating a dead horse.

I have created an N4GG log, group 0. And an older WA4BTC log, separate
in every way, group 1.
First, I would like to name or define group 0 as N4GG and group 1 as
WA4BTC. Going over the instructions several times I cannot figure out
how to do this. Can some give me a step by step? The Edit Group
Names is greyed out under 'filter. I also added a few dummy group 0
QSOs into the group 1 log thinking it would not name groups unless there
were two or more. No help.

Second, I'd like to merge the logs into one - which seems like no
problem. I would like to use the LOTW command to created one ADIF file
from the merged log that has both groups included If I sign this ADI
file with my N4GG LOTW cert., will the LOTW be able to distinguish the
difference between the N4GG and WA4BTC QSOSs based on group name, or number?

I can always upload just the WA4BTC into the LOTW under the separate
LOTW cert for that callsign. But that leaves me having to maintain
separate DX4WIN logs for each call plus merged - not handy...this is
necessary so that watching merged file DX4WIN will tell me at a glance
what I need and what I don't.

Re: [Dx4win] Log for second callsign

2013-08-21 Thread Hal Kennedy

Thanks Gerban,

I have gotten this far. I cant seem to label groups 1 and 2, but as
long as they are numbered I can always figure that out later. As a
stand along long, I found it troubling that the callsign in
preferences was not the old callsign but locked down to the new one.
I suppose in the end this does not matter.

Hal,

To be more precise on how I handle this, do the following.
You have your current log which may be called MASTER or N4GG (whatever name
you use).
Assuming you have the other logbook already in an electronic format, create
a new log (File | New) and give it a name (you can use the call sign for
that log). Next you have to indicate the group number for the QSO's in this
log. Go File | Preferences | QSO, and fill 2 in the Group field. I assume
you have 1 for the first log.
Next import all the QSO's into this log.

Now you can handle the 2 different logs accordingly or you can merge the two
logs. To do the latter, take the following steps:
First open the first log (MASTER or N4GG in this example).
Next: File | Import | and chose DX4WIN8 I/E and chose from the menu File |
Import. Follow the next steps to select your file with the second log and
import it. Save the log.

Now go to the menu and chose Filter | Edit Group Names (look in the manual
how to do this) and give a name to the group numbers. In your case 1 is N4GG
and 2 is the other call. Once ready, you will have all calls in one log but
you can see for which call the QSO is (assuming you have selected group
field in your logbook report.

Success,

Re: [Dx4win] Band Map

2013-08-01 Thread Hal Kennedy
Thanks to all for the positive reports on the bandmap. I wonder if
anyone has it working or not working interfaced to a Yaesu radio? What
strikes me as odd is the frequency readout in the QSO entry box is
always correct as well as at the top of the bandmap. The program is
reading the radio fine.

Any suggestions appreciated. I may change computers and also try
reloading the program - perhaps some code got corrupted?

[Dx4win] Bandmap - Observations

2013-07-31 Thread Hal Kennedy
Thanks for the private emails regarding bandmap issues, particularly on
six meters. Here is the info I should have provided:

Rigs: FTdx5000, FT1000MP, FT857 - all do the same thing.
Version 8.03. I have run 8.05 at times however and it does the same thing.
Yes - box at bottom of bandmap is checked follow the radio
Polling rate - was 100 mS, but tried 500 mS and 1000 mSall the same;
just slower
Computer: WIN2KNT, approx 2GHz early Pentium - with nothing else
loaded. Runs WRITELOG and N1MM fine, both of their bandmaps work fine.

Connected or not connected to a packett node - no difference.
I have the FT5K on COM1 and the 1000MP on Com2. DX4WIN lets you switch
back and forth. Both do the same thing when selected.
The correct frequency is always displayed in the QSO entry box and at
the top of the bandmap - the program is receiving the radio's frequency
just fine.

What I see:

First, the bandmap is programmed to start and end at the ham band
edges. It does not go into general coverage areas - no loss there, but
it creates a problem I had not noticed before I started digging this
morning. That problem goes as follows: On any band, if the bottom of
the bandmap, by chance, is within about 5 KHz of the bottom of the band,
the bandmap will not jump lower to show you the bottom if you tune
there. Example: If the bandmap bottom edge is 7005 and you tune
between 7000 and 7004.99 you never see the arrow - the bandmap wont make
the final jump down if it will have to display frequencies below 7000 to
do it. I didn't look at the top of the bandmap, but I suspect its the
same. If it happens to land at 7295 and you tune above 7295 you will
likely lose the arrow and not see the spots up there. I see this as one
problem that's worth addressing, as I need to see the spots in the
bottom 10 KHz of the band and at times the bandmap won't go that low.
Using the slider on the right hand side can take you there.

The bandmap appears to be programed to make approx 10 KHz jumps, or go
back to the middle of the bandmap, whichever is smaller. Some
examples: If the resolution of the bandmap is very high - say 10 KHz
covers the entire map - then moving off an edge makes the map jump such
that the arrow is back at the center. If however, the resolution is
low, say the map is showing 50 KHz of the band, then moving off an edge
will make the map jump such that the arrow is now 10 KHz off the edge,
not re-centered. I can live with this, but it would be nice if it
always re-centered. My best suggestion is below.

Back to my original problem. The bandmap seems to work fine (except for
the above) from 160 through 20M. On 17, 15, 12, and 10 it is
intermittent in following the radio - even though the frequency at the
top of the bandmap always reads correctly. Sometimes the map will jump
properly to show the arrow as you move off an edge, sometimes it won't.
This is not the too close to the edge issue I mentioned above - it
happens anywhere in the band and at any resolution. On six meters it
almost never works. Just moving to six meters the bandmap will be
wherever it was last on six and not show the arrow. I can use the
slider to find it, but tuning off an edge, the bandmap seldom jumps to
keep up - although on rare occasion it will. Having the band full of
spots or empty makes no difference.

I have heard I'm not the only one who has this issue although others
report everything works fine. I could try another computer next I guess.

If the bandmap code is going to be changed to be able to see the bottom
10 no matter what, then I'd suggest the best way to make it work is as
WRITELOG does it and I believe N1MM as well. The arrow is always
centered. The bandmap always moves as the radio moves. That way you can
always see up and down by the same amount. Resetting the hard-limit
edges to 20 KHz above and below the band - slightly into general
coverage territory, would fix the inability to see the bottom 10 at times.

I'm open to suggestions

Is it me - if it is maybe someone can give me the missing tip. I have

sometimes it doesn't, for no apparent external reason.

[Dx4win] Upgrade - Newbie Question

2010-05-03 Thread Hal Kennedy
Just starting out on DX4WIN and into my first problem. Sorry to be
asking easy questions.

I installed 8.03 and have it running fine.

If I download 8.04 and install it, it installs in C:\dx4win804, a
completely new entity including all the subdirectories, and has no
access to my license. I'm sure I could move my license there from the
install that's still at C:\dx4win803, but what about all the saved
files, etc?. Anyway, I uninstalled 8.04 and reading what I thought were
