It most likely has to do with resetting their locations in the config file

Tim, I should have said that I have 9 Monitors on my computer. Use 3 for
DX4WIN. I have no idea of where they went. I can't even uncheck them in
DX4WIN. Thanks, John W9RPM

How many monitors do you use? It could be that DX4WIN doesn't know where
they are or thinks they are somewhere they aren't? There have been several
emails about resetting the location of those windows in your configuration
file. Open that file and scroll downfind the settings for those
windows and put them back to zero. Or find those old emails doing a search
for more detail on instructions for a reset of those windows.

Tibor

Have you checked that the ADIF import file is correct? I seem to recall
that there was a bug and the ADIF file was showing 'ER' instead of 'EOR' at
the end of the record, or 'EH' instead of 'EOH' after the header. It was
something like that.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN crash, Missing IOTA Window

2018-02-10 Thread Alan Zack
Thank you Kostas, that fixed it.

There were already some number settings there that I assumed sent the window
into outer space. I replaced them with 0 (zeros) as you instructed. When I
opened DX4WIN my IOTA window was in the upper left corner (the result of the
zero settings). I was able to click and move it where I want it and all is FB.

I will definitely keep your email in my DX4WIN info folder in case it ever
happens to another window. I did search the help files and opened the DOC: User
Manual but could not find this info.

Yours was the only response to my request. I could not figure this one out on
my own but now I understand the process on how the windows remember where they
are supposed to be positioned.

BTW you are in my log in 2005 and again 2010, and maybe as an OP from EP6T in
2015

Backup everything in case something goes bad.

Go to window>iota. I suppose it is checked. Click on it and press
Alt+F4. This will close it.

Close dx4win

In dx4win>save directory find config.txt

Open it with notepad and search for [W-IOTA]

You will see something like this below

HEIGHT=80
LEFT=0
TOP=325
WIDTH=312

but with different numbers

Write

LEFT=0

TOP=0

Save the config file, open the dx4win and go to preferences. Load the just
saved config file and open iota window.

It should appear somewhere on the left top of the screen

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN crash, Missing IOTA Window

2018-02-08 Thread Kostas SV1DPI

Backup everything in case something goes bad.

Go to window>iota. I suppose it is checked. Click on it and press
Alt+F4. This will close it.

Close dx4win

In dx4win>save directory find config.txt

Open it with notepad and search for [W-IOTA]

You will see something like this below

HEIGHT=80
LEFT=0
TOP=325
WIDTH=312

but with different numbers

Write

LEFT=0

TOP=0

Save the config file, open the dx4win and go to preferences. Load the
just saved config file and open iota window.

It should appear somewhere on the left top of the screen

[Dx4win] DX4WIN crash, Missing IOTA Window

2018-02-07 Thread Alan Zack
I have been using the new ver 9 since November last year with no
problems.
I recently connected an EXT HD to my PC via a USB connection. DX4WIN
has a provision for backing up to an EXT HD via
PREFERENCES/QSO/SECONDARY BACKUP. I clicked on this window and a list
of my files on my PC appeared. I scrolled down and clicked on my new
HD shown as F: Before I could even save my changes DX4WIN crashed.
When I tried to open it again all I got was the little window that
will send crash data to Paul. I could never get D4W to open again. I
saved my ini file, license, and dxl files in a separate folder then
uninstalled D4W. I then installed a new fresh D4W. I seem to be back
to normal again. I used HELP/CHECK FOR UPDATES and updated to ver
9.0.4.1176.

Only problem is I lost my IOTA window. On my WINDOW drop down menu I
have COUNTRY, SAME CALL, IOTA, and WORLD MAP selected. I suspect my
IOTA window is open but is somehow off screen. I have moved all the
other windows around and closed them one by one but can't find where
the IOTA window is hiding. I am using a 22/23 inch screen. Any
suggestions on how to find it again?

And any idea why it crashed when I selected a EXT HD for my secondary
backup? It never recovered.

[Dx4win] Crash

2002-01-04 Thread Guy
To all,
APC is indeed a very good choice Bob, also look for
those from Bestpower on Ebay
These are normally INLINE UPS and giving you more protection
for overvoltage also.
OFFLINE UPS are much cheaper and still need some
time (ms) to get activated so still risking the crash .

I also use Alt S to make sure the logbook is updated.

I would like to see DX4WIN offer an "automatic ALT S. by having an option in
Preferences to have a Save-to-Log done after each QSO.

I am suggesting this as a convenience and not as an answer to all backup
problems. I also use a UPS and tape backup.

2002-01-04 Thread Doug Hutchison
The power supply is very stable here but I understand very well what you are
saying Jim.
 I have had several instances where PCs hang requiring a system reset giving
the same result as a power out. The use of Alt S reduces loss risk and gets
round DX4 not backing up automatically on some occcasions. As you say the
use of Alt B will maintain the backup in parallel.

Also worthy of note is that when DX4 generates a backup it maintains a copy
of the preceding backup in the file DX4WIN.~XB

[Dx4win] Crash

2002-01-04 Thread Doug Hutchison
I see, the list reply system is changed back again...thank you.
Thank you to Kris otherwise this would not have come to list.

Whenever there is situation which stops DX4 without a normal shut down, DX4
will, on restarting, issue a warning that a backup file exists and asks
whether or not is should be saved. If yes is given as the answer then a file
name will be requested via a normal file naming window. The file will
automatically be given the DXT extention and placed in
the SAVE folder. See SAVE in the help system.

The method used, I believe, is that the system automatically maintains a
backup in accordance with preferences set up and, should the system fail, it
compares the backup DXB file and the current log on restart. If the DXB is
younger than the log then an abnormal termination is indicated and you are
asked if you wish to save the backup as a log file ie DXL.

If, when your system came back up, you went through the above routine then
all you are looking for are log files in the SAVE folder.

If you did not go through the routine, you answered NO, then the backup will
have been discarded ie it reverted automatically to the last saved version
of the currently specified logbook.

The habitual use of Alt S after new entries or changes will ensure that the
logbook is maintained in its most recent state and reduce reliance on the
backup.

Best regards, Doug, MM0BJA

And bear in mind that you can buy replacement batteries for almost any
UPS. Over the last 8 or 9 years, I've owned about 25 UPSes, all from
APC. They worked great. Are they better than others? Who knows...
they kept lots of my servers running through power outages, and kept
my networks alive. I can buy replacement batteries at reasonable cost,
and it's easy to swap them. Many UPSes do self-tests of the batteries
and warn you if they need replacing. Better to find out BEFORE you
really need it, HI! So, if you get a used UPS, you can almost certainly
replace the batteries without much problem at all. It's a cheap investment
to keep your data protected.

Now that I've sold my internet business, I still use UPSes for every
piece of computing equipment in the house. Computers, monitors,
hubs, routers, etc.

A working UPS is WELL worth the cost.

I got a 300VA APC UPS at Staples in November for $10 net after rebate!
Since then, I have noticed over a hundred dips that were enough to trigger
the alarm on the UPS, and probably would have crashed my PC. None has been
longer than 3-4 seconds.

As Jim says, a great investment!

You can never predict when power is going to fail, but you can try to
minimize the likelihood of losing data:

1. Put your PC on a battery backup UPS. There have been a lot of cheap
ones on sale recently as APC rolls out their new models. You should be
able to get a decent one (300VA) for under $50. You can make the backed-up
power last longer if you plug in only the PC and not the monitor
(especially for those of us who have 17-21" monitors). However you'll be
"in the dark" trying to save your log and/or shutting down the PC. Most
power glitches are only a few minutes in duration anyway (I'm making this
up, are there statistics anywhere?). We have several at home, including
the cable modem and router, so we can continue to surf even when power is
out (unless the town loses power).

2. Don't walk away from the shack if there is an unsaved log. When I get
up, if the "modified" meter is still RED, I'll hit ALT-B to backup
immediately. ALT-S works just as well. Then I know my log is on disk
somewhere.

[Dx4win] crash

2002-01-04 Thread Kris Mraz
Courtney,

Just use Window's search utility. start->search. Look for the log file
name, probably k4wi.dxl. If you can't remember the file name just look
for all .dxl files. To find the previous version look for the .~xl
extension file. There's also a file called DX4WIN.DXB which is the file
that is automatically saved if you don't do a manual save. See below
for more info on DX4WIN.DXB.

Here are the specific directories on my system:

C:\Program Files\dx4w503\DX4WIN.DXB
C:\Program Files\dx4w503\save\n5km.dxl

If you installed in the default recommended directories then it should
be the same on your system.

DX4WIN.DXB
--
dx4win maintains an autosave log file called DX4WIN.DXB.
Let's say DX4WIN.DXB doesn't exist (which is the case when dx4win is
first started).

If you log a QSO and let dx4win automatically save, it will create
DX4WIN.DXB in C:\Program Files\dx4w503 and save your log there.

If you subsequently do a manual save your normal log, probably k4wi.dxl,
will be updated but DX4WIN.DXB will remain the same, that is, not
updated.

The next time you let dx4win automatically save the DX4WIN.DXB file is
renamed to DX4WIN.~XB and your log is saved to DX4WIN.DXB.

This rolling of DX4WIN log files continues for every autosave until you
exit the program. At this time the DX4WIN.DXB file is deleted and the
DX4WIN.~XB file is retained.

So based on your crash experience you may or may not have either of the
DX4WIN log files depending on any automatic log saves prior to the
crash.

dx4win can detect a crashed version of your log file so you
might want to try restarting dx4win. If it detects the DX4WIN.DXB file
on startup it assumes the program crashed without going through the
normal exit (deleting DX4WIN.DXB). You will be given the opportunity
to save it. Save it with a name like crash.dxl. Then open crash.dxl and
examine it for the missing QSO's. If you're lucky they will be there. If
it crashed before your QSO's were autosaved you're out of luck. If you
find them then just rename crash.dxl to k4wi.dxl.

Your last chance is to look for DX4WIN.~XB. If this exists, rename it to
something like oldlog.dxl and put it in your save directory
(C:\Program Files\dx4w503\save). Open it and inspect it for the lost
QSO's. If you find them rename oldlog.dxl to k4wi.dxl. Note: its not
possible for DX4WIN.~XB to have ALL of your QSO's. By definition some
will be missing.

Good Luck.

PS: Based on this analysis it would appear that a better program exit
strategy would be to rename DX4WIN.DXB to DX4WIN.~XB then exit. This
would allow more QSO's to be recovered in case DX4WIN.~XB is the only
thing left to salvage after a system crash.

Flame out here! computer crashed and I lost the few qso's that I had logged.
It saved it somewhere but I can't remember where. Anyone know where to look?
I really wouldn't care but I just had worked OX3OX on six meters and was a
new one for me. Thanks
