Re: [Dx4win] we lost the 5th soundcard in 803

2009-12-15 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Personally, I would buy a solution the microKeyer with built-in USB sound card.

Barring that, I would research sound cards that have passed the
WriteLog Sound Board Check:

http://www.writelog.com/downloads.htm
Sound Board Check V9.22

7f (hex) is considered the best score.

Also not all sound cards are properly supported by the various
microHAM products. Something about the various sound card inputs, and
I think it applies mostly to Vista/Win7. Check both the WriteLog and
microHAM reflector archives for details.

Keep in mind what slots your PC has. PCI is getting replaced by
PCI-e. You may not have enough slots if you want a real
serial/parallel PCI card and a second (or two) sound cards, especially
if you already have a graphics card that takes one or two PCI-e slots.

Best to get the most-compatible sound card you can, for future expansion.

Is there a way to determine from an examination of the card
specifications if this operation is possible?

Just as a "for instance," what cards do use?

The Turtle Beach Riviara looks reasonable. It doesn't have S/P DIF
output, but its Win 7 drivers are already available. The Turtle
Beach Montego seems a bit over-kill, but has full S/P DIF I/O and
their Win 7 drivers are expected out by the end of the month. The
only reason I am dwelling a bit on S/P DIF is my radio (ICOM IC-7700)
supports both S/P DIF input and output.

I want to thank the moderators of this group for their indulgence
with this OT subject. You and I should probably take this off-line.

2009-12-15 Thread Mel
Use a good one for the digital stuff, and any piece of rubbish to make
Windows noises. Something inexpensive from Creative usually does the job
for digital. If I were doing it over, I would use a digital interface
with a built-in USB sound card, not a PC card.

I am building a shack PC and would like to install two dedicated PCI
sound cards. They will be used for the usual voice and digital
stuff. When I look on-line for sound cards I am overwhelmed with the
variety available. I am not an audiophile. Can someone recommend a
decent make and model of sound cards I can install in my two PCI
slots? Not the best, but not the cheapest either. I am currently
running Windows XP, soon to be Windows 7.

Thanks.

[Dx4win] we lost the 5th soundcard in 803

2009-12-14 Thread Kostas Stamatis
We could choose one of 5 soundcards in 802. Now we have just 4 soundcards
in 803.
The presentation is much better now as we can see the name of the soundcard.
