On Sunday December 23, 2001 9:00 AM EST, the e-gold website will experience downtime in order to implement hardware and software upgrades. When the e-gold website emerges from this downtime: * e-metal Spends ordered via the e-gold Account Manager interface will be expressed by default in terms of grams (previous default selection was USD). * Users may continue to express e-metal Spends ordered via the e-gold Account Manager interface in terms of USD (or other National Currency units), but this selection must be actively made by the User when ordering Spend. * Users will be able to express e-gold Spends in terms of Euro (EUR). The move to a grams default emphasizes the fact that e-metal balances are accounted by weight of metal, as specified in the e-gold Account User Agreement: Technically, grams are units of mass. Which is important, since a gram of gold is always a gram of gold, even on the moon. However, you would have less gold if the gram was a unit of weight. But I digress. Not like we'll be using grams of gold on the moon anytime soon. [...]. Since the federal government has seized all of Zidar's assets, presumably they have seized his stock in GSR, making the US Federal Government roughly 25% owner of GSR. When the Federal Government seizes assets, it doesn't take ownership of them. After the trial, the assets will probably be either returned to the owner, or sold at auction. Hello! Digital currency is just that, and not weight by gold, gold backing is fine but not for transfers. You have waited to put the Euro on to the last minute, although you had Euro country currencies. I think the move to changing the e-gold system to default to 'AUG (grams of gold)', is a good one. An internet currency backed by gold, is in fact gold, not USD. Once customers start thinking in 'grams of gold', the value in their accounts will stop changing. Calling a gram of gold $8.41, (or whatever), does not change what it really is -- a gram of gold.
