Umm, isn't that kinda the same thing as a *down-line* or pyramid scheme, or MLM? or is that a misinterpretation on my part?, you know. kind of like it depends of what the definition of *is* - is? I wouldn't particularly agree that Gold should be sold the same way that long distance telephone service or beanie babies are promoted (as it cheapens the inherent Historical value of Gold), but that's simply my opinion among many - FWIW. At 03:55 PM 5/9/2002 -0400, you wrote: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A56332-2002May8.html MSN Messenger needn't be actively in use, merely installed. Anybody know how to remove it from XP? It's imbedded in the O/S even though you don't use it. And it looks like they make it very difficult to uninstall, if not impossible. George Even though we no longer work together, it would seem I still get the chance to help you. :-) I am about to test my homespun MSN Messenger removal technique. I'll let the list know how it goes - but for the benefit of those who know their way around their machine, and don't mind potentially breaking things, here is where I started my hunt... DISCLAIMER: You might break stuff, do this at your own risk, I won't be held accountable, yadda yadda yadda. I have an XP vitual machine running on my box. I went to c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf, the file that appears to contain the list of Windows components that appears when you go to Control Panel - Windows Components. (If your machine hides file extentions, hidden folders, and operating system files, youmight have a hard time following me.) Some components in the file have the word hide at the end. For instance: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 This is the entry for MSN Messenger. hide seems to stop it from appearing on the Windows Component list. Change the line to: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7 ..and reboot, and you will see that there is a new item on the Windows Component list, quite possibly with no name. I tried to uncheck the box and reboot, but MSN messenger was still installed. I went back to sysoc.inf and noticed that the line we just changed made mention of msmsgs.inf. I decided to look though that file. By the looks of it, there IS an uninstall section. What I plan to do if I cannot invoke it naturally, is manually remove all the registry keys it lists, unregister any dll's it shows, remove whatever files it lists, etc. A batch file to perform this would be handy for distribution to friends, employees, etc. That is the direction I am going. If anyone else wants to give my ideas a bash, let the list know how you go. I will get around to doing myself before the day is out, but technically I should be working now. - uberhacker - --- You are currently subscribed to e-gold-list as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use e-gold's Secure Randomized Keyboard (SRK) when accessing your e-gold account(s) via the web and shopping cart interfaces to help thwart keystroke loggers and common viruses.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Yeah, the first method doesn't really do anything. Looking through the .inf file revealed to me the second method seperately to reading what you posted. You need to shut IE, Outlook, MSN Explorer (a component which can actually be uninstalled), and of course MSN Messenger itself. Then run that command, and sure enough, MSN Messenger is gone. What long term effects this may have on other things is beyond me, so do it at your own risk. By reading the source code of the agreement page, I realized that you can open an e-gold account using Opera (or any other browser) by going to the following page: https://www.e-gold.com/newacct/newaccount2.asp?AGREEMENT=I%20AGREE By doing this you circumvent the agreement page and arrive directly at the account opening form. [e-gold-list] Edinburgh Financial Cryptography Engineering 2002 - CFP
--- begin forwarded text Status: U Date: Fri, 10 May 2002 22:31:51 +0200 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], e$@vmeng.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Fearghas McKay [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Edinburgh Financial Cryptography Engineering 2002 - CFP Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Third Edinburgh Financial Cryptography Engineering Conference 28-29 June, 2002 The Signet Library Parliament Square Edinburgh, Scotland C A L L F O R P R E S E N T A T I O N S Edinburgh is again host to the international *engineering* conference on Financial Cryptography. Individuals and companies active in the field are invited to present and especially to demonstrate Running Code that pushes forward the state of the art. STATEMENT OF INTENT In spite of the excesses and tragedies of the Great Dot Com era, we have come to the realization that the Internet, Commerce, and Technology are inextricably related. We are therefore gathered together to study, as a community, the application of Cryptograpy and Information Security to the world of Finance. For it is Finance that drives Commerce, and Commerce, in the modern era, is based on the 'net. This is a technical, practical meet. Presentations of demonstrable technology in the field of Financial Cryptography are invited. As this is a practical conference, we are hoping to accept every demonstrator. THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT This conference is about implementations. Presentations are required to demonstrate working code within the first five minutes. Note that we are delighted to accept proposals from work-in-progress projects. If your demo crashes while honorably attempting to execute, the crowd will still love you. THE VENUE Our Venue is the Upper Library, within the Signet Library, which is a listed building housing the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet. This exclusive conference venue is located in the centre of Edinburgh, within the Royal Mile. ADMINISTRATION Included in the conference admission will be breakfast, lunch and tea coffee breaks. Also included will be the conference dinner in a local Edinburgh establishment. The conference administration will block-book a convenient hotel in the centre of town. Details to be advised. NEXT STEPS FOR PRESENTERS 1. Save the dates 28/29 June 2002, Friday and Saturday on your calendar. It is good to plan on a few extra days, and especially, leaving on the day after, Sunday, will help to get the best fares. 2. Prepare your presentation. Check the evolving programme at http://www.efce.net/programme.html. Propose your presentation by mailing the Programme Chair, Rodney Thayer, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3. Book passage to Edinburgh. Don't forget to stay a few days on either side to see the sights. Check the site for Locatives and Logistics. 4. Work on your presentation. Remember, the main rule is that you demo working code. 5. Get your budget approved / allocated / applied for. Whilst a commercial conference, accepted presenters will pay a deeply discounted fee, to be announced in a forthcoming release. For planning purposes, 200 GBP (approximately 300 dollars or 320 euros) should cover presenter's admission; the hotel should be about 100 GBP ($150 or E160) per night. Also include travel and incidentals in your budget. 6. The call for delegates -- attendees who do not present -- will by published at a later date. If there is someone in your organisation who needs to survey the state of the financially cryptographic art, they can attend as a delegate. For planning purposes, 500 GBP ($750 or E800) should cover the delegate's admission. 7. If you think the conference can benefit your organisation, consider sponsoring. Contact the Sponsorship Chair Fearghas McKay, [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more details. 8. Keep an eye on the conference web site (www.efce.net) for evolving details.
