Multiple field technician positions are available to work within a
large#8208;scale experiment on restoration of plant and animal communities in
fragmented habitats. Research will include studies of the effects of
corridors on various aspects of plant and arthropod dispersal. Tasks will
include study site preservation, building, establishment, emptying, and
maintenance of traps, and seed/arthropod identification.
Technicians will join a team of several principal investigators, several
undergraduate and graduate students, and be provided exposure to numerous
research questions and approaches.
The pay rate will be $10.00/hr. Cheap housing options are available close to
the research site in New Ellenton or Aiken, SC. 

Successful candidates will have demonstrated interest and experience in
ecology, biology, or a related discipline, and be able to endure hot and
humid conditions and long
hours in the field. Previous field research experience
is desirable. Positions only available to US citizens due to research site
restrictions.

PURPOSE: This position is a split position, 50% research and 50% administration.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: The ideal candidate will participate in the collection of 
data in the lab and 
field, data analysis and the writing of peer-reviewed scientific papers. 
Experience in all or any 
combination of the following is preferred: leading/coordinating fieldwork, 
population 
genetics/parentage (microsatellites and/or RAD sequencing), plant reproductive 
biology and/or 
pollination biology, entomology (specifically hawkmoths and bees), plant 
identification, and basic 
ecological data collection. Research will focus on ongoing projects including 
the Oenothera,

CLM PROGRAM ANALYST/COORDINATOR: Assist with the coordination and analysis of 
the CLM 
Internship Program, which hires 80-100 interns annually to assist federal 
biologists in the western 
US. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: advertisement  
recruitment; organization  
evaluation of applications; collection  processing employment paperwork for 
interns; payroll data 
collection  reporting; coordination of the training workshop; analyzing CLM 
Program data and 
evaluations for monthly, quarterly and annual reports; assisting with the 
supervision of volunteers,

The ideal candidate will have a passion for education, research and botany. 
Proficiency in Microsoft 
Office is required, knowledge of data management software (Access, etc.), data

experience publishing 
scientific papers are preferred. Ability to work under harsh conditions 
(extreme heat/cold, camping 
for 4+ weeks at a time) is required and experience leading/coordinating 
fieldwork (team) is 
preferred. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, strong 
organizational skills, and 
the ability to respond calmly to shifting priorities. The ideal candidate will 
have strong interpersonal 
skills, will be a self-starter, highly motivated, and able to function 
successfully within a team 
structure and independently. Must have excellent verbal, written, and 
communication skills.

Minimum of Master's degree in ecology, evolution, botany, biology and/or 
related field.
Pay commensurate with experience, starting at $38,000 annually. 
Grant funded – salaried position but continued employment conditional on 
additional grant funding.

[ECOLOG-L] Graduate Research Assistantship – Plant Pathology-Climate Change

The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University 
currently has a graduate assistantship (M.S. $15,540) available in Plant 
Pathology/Climate Change research.  Auburn University assistantships 
include tuition and fee waivers as well as shared funding of health 
insurance.  The starting date for this position is negotiable, but January 
1, 2013 desired. As part of a larger research project the student will 
examine the relationship of future climate scenarios of elevated 
tropospheric ozone and altered rainfall amounts with a plant pathogen in 
altering susceptibility to loblolly pine decline an important disease 
complex in the Southern United States. Minimum qualifications include a 
B.S. degree in Forestry, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Plant Biology, or 
a related field, and an interest in plant pathology and or climate

*The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis
(NIMBioS) will host the fourth annual Undergraduate Research Conference
at the Interface of Mathematics and Biology to be held Nov. 17-18, 2012,
at the Univ. of Tennessee Conference Center in Knoxville, TN. The
conference provides opportunities for undergraduates to present their
research at the interface of biology and mathematics. Student talks and
posters will be featured as well as a plenary speaker and a panel on

 The Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) is a new organization created to work
 in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks  Recreation to restore,
 protect, and manage a network of green and blue space that promotes a
 healthy, livable, and diverse New York City. The NAC is tasked with
 expanding and diversifying the protection, management, and restoration of
 10,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and grasslands overseen by the Parks
 Department’s Natural Resources Group. This public/private partnership will
 unify the identity of NYC’s natural areas, increase public awareness and
 volunteerism, and integrate advanced technology. The Director of Science
 will bridge the public and private entities that conduct research and use
 science to inform policy and management of NYC Parks Department property.
 The Director of Science will guide the science work of the Parks
 Department’s divisions of Central Forestry, Horticulture and Natural
 Resources and will lead partnership efforts with NYC’s Urban Field Station
 and the Natural Areas Conservancy. This position will be hired by the
 Natural Areas Conservancy and will report to the Parks Department’s Chief
 of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources.
 *
 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES*
 - Oversee and manage the Parks Department’s science team, dedicated to
 conducting citywide research about ecology, conservation, restoration and
 best management practices.
 - Develop and identify research goals, experiments and studies related,
 but not limited to mortality studies, plant population analytics, and
 hydrology and stormwater capture.
 - Supervise the Senior Project Manager of Ecological Assessment, who will
 lead the first-ever citywide assessment of New York City’s natural areas
 and the creation and implementation of science-based decision making and
 management tools that will guide future natural resource conservation
 efforts for the Parks Department and the Natural Areas Conservancy.
 - Serve as the co-manager of the Urban Field Station. Manage the facility
 and shape the research partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the
 Parks Department to establish, coordinate and oversee scientific research
 projects in New York City.
 - Work with the Parks Department’s senior staff to inform the restoration,
 protection and management of the City’s forests, wetlands and grasslands.
 Leverage these efforts to implement environmental monitoring programs and
 measure progress on the impact of agency’s efforts.
 - Work closely with the Director of GIS and Analytics in the creation of
 relevant data management systems.
 - Manage scientific communication, including research papers.
 - Serve on the Science Advisory Board of the NAC.
 - Cooperate with researchers and outside institutions, including but not
