[ECOLOG-L] PhD Position in Ecological Stoichiometry

2012-09-04 Thread Mehdi Cherif
PhD Position in Ecological Stoichiometry
– The stoichiometry of food webs (StoichioWeb)

Announced by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG) at Umeå
University in
Sweden (www.emg.umu.se)

Project description
Ecological stoichiometry is a relatively novel approach that yields exciting,
often-counter-intuitive
predictions linking the chemical composition of organisms to the biogeochemical
cycles of
elements in ecosystems. Yet, most of these breakthroughs come from studies of
bi-trophic
interactions (mainly plant-herbivore and plant-decomposer interactions). Hence,
a whole field of
investigations is still open in front of this approach, since most natural food
webs contain more
than two trophic levels. Interestingly, novel theoretical work has shown that
ecosystem dynamics
observed in simplified 2-level systems can be substantially modified in a more
realistic multi-
trophic context.

This project is a dual modeling and experimental investigation of the
mechanisms underlying the
impacts of the elemental composition of organisms on the cycles of elements in
ecosystems
harboring multi-trophic food webs. In microcosms, you will assemble food webs
from
representative species of the basic trophic levels (primary producers,
herbivores, microbial
decomposers, microbivores). You will then assess the effects of the elemental
stoichiometry of
given trophic levels on the dynamics of the food web and on important
biogeochemical functions
(e.g., carbon fixation, nutrient uptake, carbon and nutrient mineralization) by
experimentally
adding/subtracting trophic levels or manipulating nutrient inputs. You will use
predictions from
mathematical models that you will have built beforehand as a guide for these
experiments.

Requirements
The recruitment procedure for the position is in accordance with the Higher
Education Ordinance
(Högskoleförordningen Chapter 5 and 7). Prerequisites include either i) 240
ECTS credits (Swe.
högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced
level (Master
level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (Swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS
credits) of higher
education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent
competence.

Anyone who, prior to July 1, 2007, had acquired qualifications meeting the
general admission
requirements for third-cycle studies then in force, i.e. first-level studies
comprising at least 120
credits, or substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad,
shall be deemed to
meet the current general entry requirements, but no later than until the end of
June 2015 (Higher
Education Ordinance, Ch. 12, item 11).

The successful candidate should show creativity and initiative and be open to
working in a spirit of
cooperation. A background in ecological modeling and/or experience with
laboratory cultures is
highly desirable. A good ability to read, write and speak English is essential.

Application
The application should include a short description of your research interests
and, more precisely,
why you are interested in the position, a CV, certificates from higher
education, copies of relevant
diplomas, and contact information for 2 reference persons. The application
should be written in
Swedish or English and can be submitted either electronically (MS Word or PDF

Postdoctoral Fellow

Model-data synthesis and forecasting across the upper Midwest: Partitioning
uncertainty and environmental heterogeneity in ecosystem carbon

A post-doctoral position in ecosystem model-data synthesis and ecological
forecasting is available in the Dietze lab in the Department of Earth and
Environment at Boston University.

This project focuses on integrating eddy-covariance, remote-sensing, forest
inventory data, and other ground-based measurements within the Ecosystem
Demography 2.2 model to understand and forecast regional-scale ecosystem
dynamics across northern Wisconsin. The project is part of the larger PEcAn
project (http://pecanproject.org), which aims to make ecosystem models, data
assimilation, and forecasting more accessible, automated, and repeatable.

As a test bed for the development and application of the PEcAn informatics
tools, this project is focused on the temperate/boreal transition zone in
northern Wisconsin, a region that is expected to show large climate change
responses and is one of the most data-rich regions in the country. The tools
developed here will enable us to partition carbon flux and pool variability in
space and time and to attribute the regional-scale responses to specific biotic
and abiotic drivers. The data-assimilation framework will partition different
sources of uncertainty, which will enable a better understanding of which are
limiting our inference, and provide a more complete propagation of uncertainty
into model forecasts.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications are a doctoral degree in plant ecology or a related
ecological or environmental science. Experience with, or interest in learning,
Bayesian statistics, ecosystem modeling, remote-sensing, and ecoinformatics
tools would be valuable. Salary is commensurate with experience and
qualifications. Up to two years and four months of funding is available.

interactions with the living world, and who can link local processes to
global impacts.

* Plant evolution and diversity (assistant or associate professor) An
evolutionary ecologist with a broad knowledge in botany, who studies
processes that generate and erode plant diversity, as well as the origins
of new traits and functions.

Positions and flexibility

With these position IBED intends to strengthen its position as an
interdisciplinary institute, with the flexibility to address a range of
questions on the interactions between processes in the abiotic environment
and in the living world. The descriptions of the positions are such that
they represent important fields of expertise for IBED. Furthermore, the
description of the positions all state a preference for filling the
vacancy at a certain level, ranging from assistant professor on a tenure
track, to full professor with tenure. This means that applicants are first
screened with this preference in mind.
However, it should be noted that these principles are not carved in stone.
It is feasible that some positions will be filled at another level than
initially anticipated, depending on the applications received. We
therefore encourage ambitious candidates with an excellent track record -
given the stage in their career - to react. This even holds for fields not
specifically mentioned in the vacancies: outstanding candidates who can
present a compelling argument that he/she would fit particularly well in
IBED, given its mission, can also send in their application, with the
motivation.

Career support and gender

IBED offers candidates an inspiring scientific setting and continuous
support in the development of their career. IBED recognizes that a
successful career move also depends on the working and living environment,
and special attention is given to a smooth transition for the candidate
given her/his family situation.
Like many of its sister institutes, IBED aims to raise the presence of
woman at the highest levels. Therefore, the Faculty of Science has started
a special program, the McGillavry fellowships, to attract more female
talent. Although the current hiring is not part of this program, it is
the aim of IBED to do its utmost to hire new ambitious female faculty
members, as it sees the skewed sex ratio as a weakness that should be
dealt with.

Re: [ECOLOG-L] internship in ecuador - ocelot survey project and permaculture agroforestry (WEBSITE)

2012-09-04 Thread Ben Bowman
Apologies for lapsing last night and forgetting to include the link to our
website. This will take you right to our internship program page:
http://3malliance.org/index.php?id=320

As mentioned below, we only have one opening left in our Fall session of
Conservation/Permaculture/Research. There are also openings left in our
Community Education and Sustainable Development internship (see program
description for details).

You can also consider applying for both the Fall and Winter sessions, if you
would be available for either. Just, if you are applying for the winter
session, please do not forget to include (as mentioned on the website)
whether you would be available for the 8 week session, the 10 week session,
or that either would be okay for you.

Thanks for so much interest!

We have one opening left in our Fall internship program, running October 15
- December 13.

Specifically, we need an intern who will, as their personal project in our
internship program, continue an ongoing camera survey of wild cats in
coastal Ecuador. This is an exciting opportunity to help protect some
majestic animals and spend substantial time in Ecuador's endangered coastal
rainforest wilderness.

If you are interested, please read the program description on our website
before contacting us (we have very limited internet access and so our
computer time is precious).

If you like what you read, follow the instructions on our website to apply,
and we'll be in touch!.

look forward to working with you.

-Ben Bowman
Intern Coordinator

PS - If you are unavailable this fall, feel free to apply for our Winter
session, which begins in early January.
