Workshop Description:

Spanning many orders of magnitude in time and space scales, Earth
science data are increasingly large and complex, and often represent
very long time series, making such data difficult to analyze, visualize,
interpret, and understand. Moreover, advanced electronic data storage
technologies have enabled the creation of large repositories of
observational data, while modern high performance computing capacity has
enabled the creation of detailed empirical and process-based models that
produce copious output across all these time and space scales. The
resulting explosion of heterogeneous, multi-disciplinary Earth science
data have rendered traditional means of integration and analysis
ineffective, necessitating the application of new analysis methods and
the development of highly scalable software tools for synthesis,
assimilation, comparison, and visualization. This workshop explores
various data mining approaches to understanding Earth science processes,
emphasizing the unique technological challenges associated with
utilizing very large and long time series geospatial data sets.
Especially encouraged are original research papers describing
applications of statistical and data mining methods---including cluster
analysis, empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs), genetic algorithms,
neural networks, automated data assimilation, and other machine learning
techniques---that support analysis and discovery in climate, water
resources, geology, ecology, and environmental sciences research.

[ECOLOG-L] Job: Faculty Position in Microbial Ecology

2012-10-26 Thread Melissa Yost
Faculty position in Microbial Ecology at the

Kellogg Biological Station

The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) of Michigan State University seeks
to fill a tenure-track, academic year faculty position in microbial ecology.
This position is part of a University-wide Global Water Initiative to
enhance and expand the capacity of MSU to address fundamental and applied
research questions related to the sustainable use of water. The position is
available beginning in Fall 2013 and can be filled at either the Assistant
or Associate Professor level.

Applicants should show evidence of their capacity to develop externally
funded and collaborative research that uses microbes to address fundamental
ecological and evolutionary questions. KBS is ideally suited to a
field-focused research program that links microbial processes and
population, community, ecosystem, and/or landscape dynamics. While the
specific research area of interest is open, the individual selected for this
position should have a demonstrated interest in research involving aquatic
systems.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to graduate research
training at KBS and in their on-campus department and participate in summer
teaching and research programs at KBS. Joint appointments in the Departments
of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Zoology or Plant Biology, which
would be the tenure home for the successful applicant, will be evaluated as
part of the search process. The specific campus teaching assignment for this
position will depend on the candidate's home department, but will be
equivalent to one course per year. They will also be expected to participate
in the interdepartmental graduate training programs at MSU in Ecology,
Evolution and Behavioral Biology (EEBB) and/or Environmental Science and

interest, CV, a statement of research accomplishments and goals, a statement
of teaching accomplishments and goals, and contact information for three
references. Questions about these positions should be addressed to
microbialecologysea...@kbs.msu.edu or Dr. Steve Hamilton
(hamil...@kbs.msu.edu), Chair of the Search Committee.

Michigan State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
Employer. Applications from women and members of under-represented groups
are strongly encouraged. Persons with disabilities have the right to
request and receive reasonable accommodation.

[ECOLOG-L] Long-term travel insurance question

2012-10-26 Thread Neahga Leonard
Hello Ecologgers,

I have a question I am hoping some of you may be able to help with.

I have accepted the position of Conservation Director for an integrated
environmental/social conservation/wellbeing program in Borneo. I will be
there for an undefined time, at minimum 2 years, possibly longer. One of
the ways we address conservation needs is by addressing local medical
needs, making us something of a hybrid between a medical organization and
an environmental conservation organization.

The question is if anyone knows of some good, full coverage (evac, etc,
etc), long-term international medical insurance for a reasonable price? Is
there anyone who offers special deals for those working with medical
projects, environmental projects, non-profits, or for expats?

Thank you

The one that I have used (including while in Borneo) is International SOS, who
does air evac to Singapore or Darwin from Kalimantan (not sure about the
Malaysian part, though I assume it's similar). The full travel/medical with
evac is between $1500-2000/yr depending upon the usual things (age, sex,
country/state of residence, etc.). I don't know about other services but you
have to buy for one year at a time. Their web site:

http://www.internationalsos.com/en/

I would recommend actually contacting the American Embassy (assuming you are
American) in Jakarta (or KL) and seeing with whom they contract. It was
International SOS in the past but that may have changed.

Selamat Jalan!

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc: ecosystem services, TNC

2012-10-26 Thread David Inouye

Job Title: Post-Doctoral Associate (ecosystem services scientist)

Preferred Location(s): St. Paul, Minnesota or Fort Collins, Colorado

Timing and Duration: The position is available
immediately and is funded for up to 2 years.

Project Background:

In 2011, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) embarked on
a five-year, $10M collaboration with Dow Chemical
Company (Dow) to help companies recognize, value
and incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem
services into global business goals, decisions
and strategies. A central focus of the TNC-Dow
Collaboration is initiatives at three pilot sites
to implement and refine models that support
corporate decision-making related to the value
and resources that nature provides to business.

The Post-Doctoral Associate will support research
at the second pilot site in Brazil, which aims to
develop a methodology and tools to guide business
and land use decisions to maximize agricultural
(sugar cane) production and biodiversity and
ecosystem services through forest restoration.
This site is a joint venture of Dow and Mitsui
Co. Ltd, of Tokyo, Japan, called Santa Vitória
Açúcar e Álcool (SVAA), and is located in Santa
Vitória in the heart of the agricultural frontier
of Brazil. When fully operational, SVAA will be
one of the largest integrated facilities for
producing biopolymers (polyethylene) derived from
renewable sugar cane. Collaboration research will
focus on improving land use decision-making
around the placement of sugar cane fields and
required forest restoration to meet the
requirements of Brazil’s Forest Code in SVAA’s
200,000 hectare licensing area. Pilot analyses
will include modeling of sugarcane expansion,
legal requirements of the Forest Code, habitat
connectivity/viability, and ecosystem services

and models to measure trade-offs among land
use/restoration scenarios in both economic and biophysical terms.

· Identifying priority sites for sugar
cane and forest restoration based on ecosystem
service benefits using, modifying, or developing
optimization modeling tools/techniques.

· Working with project team to produce
landscape maps/evaluation methods and to
integrate tools into appropriate business
planning processes and decision making.

· Communicating regularly with key
Collaboration partners (Collaboration Project
team, TNC personnel, Dow/Mitsui/SVAA business
managers, and University/Natural Capital Project
scientists) to convey and interpret key findings,
maintain strong partnerships, and facilitate conservation-business learning.
· Preparing results for presentations,
reports, and peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Responsibilities:

· Work with TNC, Dow, and SVAA personnel
to lead economic valuation and provide technical
support related landscape analyses on sugar cane
expansion and water resources (i.e., nutrient/sediment retention and supply).

· Apply appropriate valuation tools and
models to measure trade-offs
