Dear managers of surrogate species programs:
This is a request for assistance in research aimed at identifying
challenges with surrogate species approaches to environmental management.
While there is a plethora of literature on the surrogate approach, there
is scarce input by people like you who are implementing the method. This
research hopes to broaden the scientific community’s perspective on
surrogate applications by including your input. I am requesting that you
take one of two surveys and provide monitoring results from your programs
if they are available. There are two levels at which managers can
participate:
• Level one- Fill out a short survey with multiple choice questions
and short answer questions at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SurrogateProgramsZMWWS92

• Level two- Fill out a longer survey that builds on the shorter
survey with ranking questions and two long answer questions at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YLF38LYmanagersofsurrogateprogramslongversio
n

Please forward monitoring results from your program labeled “surrogate” to
Leslie Rowland at habitatdesgnstud...@yahoo.com and indicate if you would
like for them to remain anonymous. This research will be included in a
Master’s of Science capstone research paper through the American Public
University and will be submitted for publication. Mangers who wish their
survey responses to remain anonymous can indicate so on the final question
of either survey. Requests for anonymity will absolutely be respected.
To participate, use the links provided above. Any questions, additional
comments, concerns, or requests for survey results can be sent to Leslie
Rowland at habitatdesignstud...@yahoo.com
This research depends on your participation. Thank you so much for
contributing to this effort.
Best regards,
Leslie Rowland-

Ecologgers,

Some of the links didn't come through correctly in yesterday's post.
If you go to the Linkage Mapper website
(http://code.google.com/p/linkage-mapper) you will find all the
information and links from the original message.

Best,
Brad

[ECOLOG-L] Conceptional diagrams in Word "on the fly"

2013-03-17 Thread Louis Macovsky
Hi,

While working in a Word document, I want to sketch conceptional diagrams
with text or equations without stopping to bring up graphical tools
provided by Word or other programs.

I think this can be done with a Wacom tablet linked to my MacBook Pro but
I don't know. Having no experience with these products I am seeking your
advice on what tools are available or what do you do for what I described
above.

Thanks,
Lou

[ECOLOG-L] JOB revised- POINT COUNT TECHNICIANS

2013-03-17 Thread Allison Byrd
POINT COUNT TECHNICIANS (10-15) needed to conduct tidal marsh bird research
along the mid-Atlantic and New England coast! Technicians will support a
large-scale project called SHARP: Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research
Program, which investigates the status and distribution of tidal marsh birds
along the North Atlantic coast. Particular emphasis is placed on Saltmarsh
Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, Willet and Clapper Rail. See
www.tidalmarshbirds.org for more information on SHARP.

Technicians will conduct distance-sample point count surveys, as well as
broadcast surveys, for secretive tidal marsh birds in selected tidal
marshes. Positions are available in coastal Maine, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Ideal applicants will have prior
experience with point count surveys and broadcast surveys, and be willing to
work long hours in remote marshes under harsh field conditions (biting
insects and heat). All applicants must have a valid driver’s license, a good
driving record, a good sense of humor, and the ability to adjust to varying
schedules throughout the field season. Applicants must also have a working
knowledge of north-eastern bird identification by sight and sound. Some
positions may require use of a personal vehicle for work (mileage
reimbursable). Maryland and Virginia positions require significant motorboat
experience; applicants should describe boat experience in their application
letter and include an additional reference that can attest to boating
skills. Positions will be filled contingent on confirmation of funding.

Housing may be available for all positions. Salary starts at ~$9/hour and
will be commensurate with experience. Two crew leader positions are
available to help organize efforts in the northern (Maine to New York) and
southern (New Jersey to Virginia) regions; both positions require previous
experience leading and training crews. Crew leader positions start at ~$11/hour.

Positions will begin late April 2013 and conclude late July - early August
2013. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. To apply, please
send a resume and application letter with three references to
i...@tidalmarshbirds.org.
