Third Millennium Alliance (TMA) was founded in 2007 with the purchase of 100
acres and the
establishment of the Jama-Coaque Reserve (JCR) in the western province of
Manabí, Ecuador,
between the cities of Jama and Pedernales, and four kilometers inland. Now
encompassing over
1,000 acres, the Jama-Coaque Reserve actively protects one of the last
remaining fragments of
Pacific Equatorial Forest, which is considered to be one of the most threatened
tropical forests in
the world. Learn more at www.tmalliance.org.

Internship Opportunities: Interns are to take on high-impact and dynamic
projects; we are a young
organization forging our path as we discover it. There is a tremendous amount
of work to be done
and experience to be gained – for interns and for us. Above all, creativity,
innovation, and self-
motivation are the fuel of our intern program. Immediately surrounding the
house we are
designing/growing/building a living laboratory of sustainable resource
management (i.e.
permaculture), which also serves as our field headquarters for field biological
research and forest
monitoring.

We are offering an optional Permaculture Design Certification course with this
internship, to be
taught throughout the two-month duration. There is a difference in price based
on whether you
choose to take the PDC course; please visit our website for more information:
www.tmalliance.org/internships/program-cost.

In addition to work managing the agroforestry production zone and organic
vegetable garden,
each intern is assigned a personal project, which is akin to a “thesis” of
sort, but of a much more
practical nature. Generally speaking, there are three categories of personal
projects: 1)
conservation biology research and 2) sustainable food production, and 3)
appropriate technology.

The following is a list of some of the projects we’re looking to tackle during
the upcoming
sessions. Some are new projects and others are ongoing and multi-year projects.
Projects with
stars next to them are of high interest and priority. When applying please
prioritize three projects
from the list below in the order of most interest.

Flora & Fauna Research:
•*Ethnobotany* (requires strong Spanish-speaking skills)
•*Native Seed Bank Nursery* (requires strong Spanish-speaking skills)
•*Water Quality Measurements* (knowledge of aquatic macrofauna is an advantage)
•*GIS Research* (mapping of the JCR, related mostly to another Flora &
Fauna Research Project,
probable slight difference in the internship price)
•*Camera trap survey of wild felines* (ocelot, jaguarundi)
•*Monkey Troop Demography & Behavioral Study (Mantled howler monkeys &
critically endangered
Ecuadorian white-fronted capuchins)
•*Herpetofauna survey* (reptile and amphibian diversity and abundance)
• Ornithology Survey - (ornithology experience and Spanish-speaking skills)

Permaculture/Food Production:

[ECOLOG-L] Workshop: Research and Management of Novel Infectious Diseases in Reptiles and Amphibians 25 October 2014 TWS Annual Meeting

2014-08-18 Thread Valorie Titus
Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to invite you to participate in a one-day workshop to be held at
the 21st Annual
Conference of The Wildlife Society in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 25 October
2014. The workshop will
take place on Saturday, October 25th, and is titled “Research and Management of
Novel Infectious
Diseases in Reptiles and Amphibians.” We are sponsored by the Association of
Reptile and Amphibian
Veterinarians, The Wildlife Society’s Wildlife Disease Working Group, and
Partners in Amphibian and
Reptile Conservation, and. We are looking for participation from the broadest
group of wildlife
researchers, managers, veterinarians, and educators as possible in order to
strengthen knowledge,
communication, and collaboration among this diverse group of professionals who
are dealing with the
threat of emerging diseases in ectothermic vertebrates.

A full description of the program can be found below. Participants are asked to
fill out a questionnaire
on reptile and amphibian disease observations that we are asking each
participant to fill out and bring
to the workshop. If you have relevant information that is not published and
would be willing to share,
please consider sending us back the questionnaire even if you cannot attend the
workshop and send
to the email address herpdise...@gmail.com.

We have arranged for this workshop to be offered at the minimal expense ($10
for students, $25 for
professionals).

We hope to see many of you in October!

Workshop: Research and Management of Novel Infectious Diseases in Reptiles and
Amphibians

Organizers:
Kimberly Andrews, PhD, Univ. of Georgia and Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Anna Savage, PhD, Smithsonian Institution /University of Central Florida
Terry Norton, DVM, Dipl. ACZM, Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Matthew Allender, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACZM, IL Natural History Survey Prairie
Research Inst.
Valorie R. Titus, PhD, Green Mountain College

Endorsing Organizations:
ARAV (Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians)
TWS Wildlife Disease Working Group
PARC (Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation)

Statement of Purpose: We will bring together experts in reptile and amphibian
ecology, epidemiology,
management, immunology, and evolution to address the state of the knowledge,
best practices, and
current and future priorities for infectious disease threats. A combination of
expert presentations,
round table discussions, and break out groups will be employed to produce
protocols for biosecurity
measures and standardization of surveillance and outbreak management, and
public awareness
initiatives for broad dissemination within the herpetology community.

Abstract: Emerging infectious diseases have become of increasing concern in
both free-ranging and
captive wildlife populations. Much of the attention focusing on wildlife
disease in herpetofauna has
been directed at amphibians and chytrid, although recent information on
emergent diseases in both
free-ranging and captive reptile populations suggests that research and
management for reptiles
should also be considered a conservation priority. In particular, turtles are
demonstrating a pervasive
trend in co-infections of diseases such as ranavirus (also found in
amphibians), herpesvirus,
mycoplasma, and adenovirus. Further, snake fungal disease has been documented
in a growing
number of species across a geographic range. Veterinarians, biologists, and
managers have been
engaging in discussions and workshops to establish the state of the science and
to direct where we
need to further focus our scientific inquiries. However, more advanced
collaboration is needed both
within and among these groups – not only for targeting research priorities, but
also towards
standardization of protocols for sample collection, diagnostic procedures, and
information sharing.
Additionally, we must continue to identify progressive and proactive ways to
discover novel diseases
and the technology that can mitigate spread and reduce rates of infection. This
proposed workshop
will focus on the identification, surveillance, and management of novel
infectious diseases in reptiles
and amphibians. Specifically, our objectives are to integrate information on
current knowledge,
research priorities, sampling protocols, and management approaches among
professional
herpetologists, with the goal of producing tangible, standardized guidelines
for designing,
conducting and disseminating work related to emerging infectious diseases in
herpetofauna.

Audience:
• Wildlife Biologists (multi-disciplinary)
• Habitat Managers
• Veterinarians
• Zoo, Husbandry, and Rehabilitators
• State and Federal Agencies

Re: [ECOLOG-L] field computer/pda recommendations?

2014-08-18 Thread Malcolm McCallum
Even if you use a PDA or other electronic device in the field, it is
probably still a good idea to keep good records in a field book too.
As easy as it is to destroy a field book, electronics can be easier!
:)
I have used Tremble XM and XT in the field which is essentially a PDA.
They worked ok. Then, Garmin had a GPS/PDA for a while but I dont
think they make it any more. It was actually easier to use than the
Tremble, although not as technically good. I have not used PDAs
otherwise. However, you might do better using a smart phone than a
PDA these days. The newest HP Pavillion has a 6 hr battery with an A8
processor. It seems like a good laptop to me. With Windows 8.1 you
can install 8.1 pro and then run programs in 8.1 that require oldeer
operating systems. I can't remember if you install th other operating
system inside 8.1 or if its just a setting. However, I am 90% certain
you must have 8.1 pro to do it.

[ECOLOG-L] SCB Africa Section Communications/E-mentoring Program: Call for Applications

2014-08-18 Thread Chabi Adéyèmi Marc Sylvestre DJAGOUN
Please circulate widely! Thanks.

*Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Africa Section
Communications/E-mentoring Program *
*Call for Applications*

Building capacity in conservation science through improving research
scholarship and proficiency in disseminating scientific results requires
more than the status quo that obtains in the African continent. What
African researchers and students need is to tap into the flourishing
virtual interconnectivity of this dispensation. Whereever they are in the
continent, African students can reach out to would be mentors and in the
process leapfrog local and regional challenges. There are virtually no
boundaries in today's world whether national or continental. What we have
are fluid and extremely fast bridges of communication and information.
It is this strategic opportunity that the Africa Section of the Society for
Conservation Biology (SCB) is working to maximize through its creation of
the communications/e-mentoring program. A successful pilot of the program
occurred from August 2007- March 2008 and its goal is to increase the
capacity of African student conservation biologists to publish and
disseminate their research in international peer review journals.

This is a call for applicants who want to participate in the 2014/2015
phase of the SCB Africa Section Communications/E-mentoring Program. For
more information and requirements for would be mentors and mentees see the
attached or e-mail Mary Molokwu (mary.molo...@gmail.com) or Stephen Awoyemi
