[ECOLOG-L] December Workshop in Structural Equation Modeling for Ecology Evolutionary Biology

2014-12-06 Thread Jarrett Byrnes
This January 5th-9th at UMass Boston, I will be running a one week intensive
in Structural Equation Modeling targeting Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. If
you are interested, registration is now open at
http://caps-courses.umb.edu/courses/winter/cr/gr/biol/ All are welcome -
students, faculty, etc. The syllabus is at http://byrneslab.net/teaching/sem/

In the course, we will cover basic path analysis, SEM with covariance matrices,
including latent variable analysis, as well as newer equation-level estimation
approaches that can utilize generalized linear mixed modeling approaches. As
part of the course, you will work with your own data to begin building an SEM
for your own research.

Pre-requisites are a familiarity with linear modeling (linear regression,
multiple
linear regression, mixed models would help). The workshop will be taught by
making extensive use of R. If you only have a passing familiarity with R, there
is
a pre-class tutorial on the website, although it will help immensely to feel
confident in working in R before the course.

I also ask as a prerequisite that you bring a multivariate dataset of some sort
that you’re interested in working with. Students will use their own data during
afternoon labs, and use the final afternoon to present preliminary work.

If you would like to take the course you can register at http://caps-
courses.umb.edu/courses/winter/cr/gr/biol/ and contact me with any
questions.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc position: Epidemiological models of Ebola. CIDD, PSU

2014-12-06 Thread Eelke Jongejans

A postdoctoral position is available to develop and implement a
simulation study to evaluate alternative intervention strategies in a
range of epidemiological models of Ebola. The postdoc will need a strong
background in stochastic population modelling and an interest in
applying theoretical methods to management of infectious disease and
decision-making under uncertainty. A Ph.D. in Quantitative Ecology,
Population Biology, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or an
equivalent area is required. Candidates should demonstrate a track
record of publication; have strong organizational, written, and oral
communication skills; and be able to work both independently and as part
of a collaborative team. The position is funded by the NSF RAPID
Program. The postdoc will work with: Dr. Katriona Shea
(http://www.bio.psu.edu/People/Faculty/Shea/); Dr. Matthew Ferrari
(http://www.cidd.psu.edu/people/mjf283); and Dr. Ottar Bjørnstad
(http://www.cidd.psu.edu/people/onb1) in the Department of Biology
(www.bio.psu.edu http://www.bio.psu.edu/) and the Center for
Infectious Disease Dynamics
(www.cidd.psu.edu http://www.cidd.psu.edu/) at the Pennsylvania State
University. Please contact
Katriona Shea (k-s...@psu.edu mailto:k-s...@psu.edu; +1 814-321-4809)
for more information.

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page
statement of research interests that explicitly describes professional
qualifications for this position, and contact information for three
referees. Penn State requires all applicants to register and complete
the application form at the Penn State employment website at
https://app2.ohr.psu.edu/Jobs/External/EVMS2_External/currentap1.cfm#54842.
Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until a
suitable candidate is found. This position is initially funded for one
year from date of hire. CAMPUS SECURITY CRIME STATISTICS: For more about
safety at Penn State, and to review the Annual Security Report which
contains information about crime statistics and other safety and
security matters, please go to http://www.police.psu.edu/clery/
http://www.police.psu.edu/clery/, which

will also provide you with detail on how to request a hard copy of the
Annual Security Report. Penn State is an equal opportunity, affirmative
action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities

2014-12-06 Thread Jarrett Byrnes
Apologies for the typo in the subject line. This is January workshop, not
December. The body of the email was correct - the course will run from
January 5-9.
