[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral Position: Dendroecological perspectives on temperate mountain forest dynamics of Central and Eastern Europe

2016-11-04 Thread Marketa Chaloupkova
Postdoctoral Position: Dendroecological perspectives on temperate
mountain forest dynamics of Central and Eastern Europe

Type of employment: Temporary position – until the end of 2018 (with
possibility to extend to permanent positon) Working hours: Full time
First day of employment: summer 2017 Number of positions: 1 City: Prague
Country: Czech Republic

Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Faculty of Forestry and
Wood Sciences

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our team within the
Forest Dynamics Lab of the Department of Forest Ecology, Faculty of
Forestry and Wood Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic. The project is
titled “Disturbance regimes as drivers of structural variability, carbon
dynamics and biodiversity at the stand and landscape levels in primary
mountain forests in central and eastern Europe.”

Disturbance plays a dominant role in shaping the structure and function
of forest ecosystems, but quantification of disturbance effects is
typically limited by missing information on a location’s history and a
region’s disturbance regime. Our lab uses tree-ring data to reconstruct
site histories, providing insight into how forest characteristics
recover from disturbances of variable severity. We are particularly
interested in linking patterns in the severity and frequencies of
disturbance to variation in tree size structure, carbon dynamics and
biodiversity.

The successful candidate will have access to a completed database of 20
000 tree cores collected from 1000 forest plots distributed throughout
remaining patches of old-growth forest is central and eastern Europe.
Plots are distributed in a hierarchical design (i.e. plots nested within
stands, within landscapes throughout the Carpathian mountain range). The
aim of the design is to partition the effects of disturbance effects at
a variety of scales, from local variation among neighboring locations
due to smaller-scale gap dynamics to more extreme events impacting
entire landscapes.

The selected candidate will be expected to lead projects using available
tree-ring data to link tree growth and biomass dynamics to abiotic and
biotic factors. Responsibilities will predominantly be data analysis and
manuscript preparation. Opportunities to visit some of our impressive
field locations will be available, but the candidate is not expected to
participate in data collection.

We are a young and energetic research team with close collaborations
with international partners. Opportunities exist for international
exchange visits and meetings. To obtain more information about our team,
visit http://scholar.google.cz/citations?user=DaBJTM4J

Applicants should have a PhD (at the time of hire) in environmental or
related sciences (biology, ecology, geography, forest sciences), and
excellent English communication and writing skills on the level of
native speaker is essential.

Salary: 1300 – 1600 EUR based on the previous experience and performance
We offer a 2-year position starting as soon as possible. The starting
monthly salary will be around 1300-1600 Euro, which represents double of
the median salary in the Czech Republic. To compare living costs see
here: https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living In addition, there is a
share increase based on the personal performance.

Applications: Please attach a CV listing skills and qualifications, a
list of publications and other documents deemed important by the
applicant. Applicants should provide a short statement outlining why
they believe themselves to be suitable for the above position.
Applicants should include contact information for two references, one
being the current or most recent employer.

Send the application to the following address: Miroslav Svoboda Email:

[ECOLOG-L] Post-Doctoral Fellow – Survival strategies and seed dispersal by the threatened Micronesian Starling on Guam, Mariana Islands

2016-11-04 Thread Julie Savidge
Description:
This research position is part of a larger collaborative DoD SERDP project
aimed at restoring ecosystem
function (specifically seed dispersal) to Guam’s forests. Native seed
dispersers have been extirpated or
greatly reduced on Guam, largely due to predation by the invasive Brown
Treesnake.

Micronesian Starlings are the only remaining native avian frugivore on Guam;
the population is largely
restricted to Andersen Air Force Base and presumably remains because of its
ability to utilize urban and
suburban environments and its capacity to persist in areas under snake control.
 By understanding how
this species has survived on Guam, we might be able to develop ways to expand
its population, and thus
the ecological functions it provides.

The responsibilities of this postdoctoral position, based largely on Guam, are
to investigate the diet of
Micronesian Starlings and their movement patterns to understand which tree
species benefit and
predict the area over which an individual bird could provide seed dispersal
services. By comparing diet
and movement of Micronesian Starlings between Saipan, where data has already
been collected, and
Guam, we can gain valuable information on the functions they are performing on
Guam and how their
diet and capacity to disperse seeds may have changed due to the lack of
competitors and/or high snake
predation pressure. Telemetry will be used to determine movements, roosting
locations, and to study
post-fledging survival. The successful candidate will lead data collection by
the field crew and have
primary responsibility for analysis, presentation, and publication of the
research. The incumbent will
work collaboratively with others involved with the project. Applicants must be
able to work in rugged
terrain and in hot, humid conditions. Airfare and some relocation expenses
provided.

Qualifications:
Required: 1) Ph.D. by the appointment start date in a discipline related to the
research described above,
2) Practical experience in the design, conduct, and statistical analysis of
ecological field studies, 3)
Demonstrated ability to prepare and submit professional manuscripts in refereed
journals, 4) Excellent
written and oral communication skills, 5) Eligible to work in the United States
by proposed start date.
FWCB will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Desirable: Experience in 1) Analysis of avian habitat use and movement
patterns, 2) Mist-netting and
banding birds, 3) Post-fledging survival, 4) Avian seed dispersal, 5)
Radio-telemetry, 6) GIS, and 7)
Collaborative projects.  Additionally, past experience supervising a field
crew, and working in challenging
conditions is desirable.

Start Date and Duration:  Anticipated February or March 2017 start (later
spring start dates will be
considered).  The position duration is up to 2 years depending on start date.

Application Procedure: To apply, upload a cover letter that includes how you
satisfy the required and
desirable qualifications and your research interests; curriculum vitae;
representative publications; and
contact information for at least 3 professional references to the following
address:
http://jobs.colostate.edu/postings/38621.  Applications will be accepted until
the position is filled, but
to ensure full consideration, applications should be submitted by December 4,
2016.

[ECOLOG-L] PhD position - Integrating scientific and local ecological knowledge for capelin stock management at Memorial University

2016-11-04 Thread Marie clément
Ph.D. Opportunities
Integrating scientific and local ecological knowledge towards improving
capelin stock management

In partnership with Duke University, the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems
Research (CFER) at Memorial University is seeking candidates to undertake a
multidisciplinary PhD project aimed at incorporating scientific and local
ecological knowledge and the findings of an observer network towards
improving policies and management practices for the sustainability of
capelin fisheries and conservation. This PhD project is part of a larger
research project entitled “Integrating genomics, phenotypes and local
ecological knowledge towards improving capelin stock management in Canadian
Atlantic and Arctic waters”. Despite capelin’s economic, social and
ecological value in Canada, its populations remain largely unknown,
particularly in northern regions. We will rigorously document population
structures, biological characteristics and population dynamics for capelin
in the boreal, subarctic and Arctic regions of eastern Canada, and will
document the connectivity between capelin stocks in Canadian and Greenland
waters. To achieve these goals, we will fully integrate the most recent
developments in population genomics (objective 1) with phenotypes and life
history information (objective 2), and local ecological knowledge (LEK) and
observer networks (objective 3.

Under the co-supervision of Drs. Grant Murray (Duke University) and Marie
Clément (Memorial University), the successful candidate will be responsible
for developing objective 3 (LEK and observer network) in Labrador and the
Quebec Lower North Shore. The successful candidate will be working in close
collaboration with indigenous communities, fishers, industry, non-profit
organizations, and the provincial and federal governments as well as with
Drs. Louis Bernatchez (Université Laval) and Pascal Sirois (Université du
Quebec à Chicoutimi), whose research groups are responsible for the genetic
and phenotypic components of this project.

LOCATION: The candidate will be stationed at Memorial University, at
either the CFER of the Marine Institute in St. John’s, NL, or at the
Labrador Institute in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, depending on preference.
Field work will be conducted in Labrador and the Quebec Lower North Shore.

QUALIFICATION: The position is open to all candidates holding an M.Sc.
degree in biology, environmental or social sciences, but a strong
background in biological sciences will be a significant asset, as will
experience in conducting semi-structured interviews, using ArcGIS, and
working in a northern context or with indigenous communities.

STIPENDS: $20,000/ year for 3 years. Funding, including travelling for
conducting research has been secured. Students are encouraged to apply for
applicable scholarships.

ANTICIPATED START DATE: January 2017 or April 2017

To apply, email a cover letter describing your research interests, your
curriculum vitae and the names of three references to
