[ECOLOG-L] INQUA 2019 Session on "Climatic and Human Impacts of Volcanism during the Quaternary"

2019-01-07 Thread Francis Micheal Ludlow
We would like to invite you to consider submitting an abstract to an
upcoming session on the *"Climatic and Human Impacts of Volcanism during
the Quaternary" *at the upcoming INQUA 2019 Congress in Dublin, Ireland,
July 2019. The focus of the session is very broad and we welcome
submissions from any of the many fields addressing climatic and human
impacts of volcanism in any period of the Quaternary, from deep past to the
present.

There is now just a few days away before the abstract submission deadline (*9th
Jan*) - see all the needed details at the link below.

http://www.inqua2019.org/call-for-abstracts/

*Session description:*
Volcanic eruptions produce regional to global climatic impacts.
Global-scale impacts arise primarily from the injection of sulfur dioxide
into the stratosphere, where it oxidizes to form sulfate aerosols, leading
to changes in atmospheric clarity and an associated backscattering of
incoming solar radiation. The net temperature impact of these aerosols is a
short-term but potentially large decrease in global mean surface
temperatures. Patterns of atmospheric circulation and precipitation can
also be impacted, leading to complex regional hydroclimatic impacts.
Explosive volcanic eruptions have occurred during the Quaternary on a
frequency and magnitude (e.g., Toba super-eruption) far beyond the range of
contemporary human experience. Studying the impacts of such eruptions in
climate model simulations, as well as examining the fingerprints of such
eruptions in geologic deposits (e.g., ice cores) and proxy records (e.g.,
tree-rings and others) provides valuable insight into the likelihood and
consequences of this major geological and climatic hazard. Climate models,
proxy-based palaeoclimatic reconstructions and instrumental data do not,
however, always agree on the climatic impact of major historic eruptions,
pointing to the need for further research. Volcanically induced climate
changes also provide tests of societal vulnerability and response to abrupt
and severe climatic variability. Under the remit of the PAGES (Past Global
Changes) Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS) Working Group, this
session thus invites contributions that examine how major eruptions have
affected climate and societies, using climate modelling, historical,
archaeological, palaeoecological and other records, to further our
understanding of the potential climatic and societal impacts of past and
future eruptions.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral Position in the Terrestrial Laser Scanning of Forests at the University of Nevada, Reno

2019-01-07 Thread Jonathan Greenberg
Postdoctoral Position in the Terrestrial Laser Scanning of Forests

The Global Environmental Analysis and Remote Sensing (GEARS) Laboratory
(https://naes.unr.edu/gears/) in the department of Natural Resources and
Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno, is seeking a
Postdoctoral Researcher in the Terrestrial Laser Scanning of Forests with an
immediate start date. The researcher will be part of a large, collaborative
project with researchers from the University of Maryland, College Park,
University of Edinburgh, the USDA Forest Service, and NASA JPL. The project's
goal is to analyze changes in the structure of forests across the Sierra Nevada
Mountains using a variety of remote sensing data and techniques including data
derived from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), airborne LiDAR, and unmanned
aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. TLS, in particular, provides one of the most
detailed measures of forest structure and change and can be used as the gold
standard for testing larger scale measures and improving our understanding of
forest processes. However, in the past, TLS has typically been collected and
analyzed over a very limited number of sites. Our project covers nearly 150
individual sites across large climatic, diversity, and disturbance gradients.
These measurements and analyses will allow a deeper understanding of fine scale
changes in biomass accumulation and loss, particularly as it relates to fuels
and fires. The postdoctoral researcher's primary responsibilities will be to
develop and implement algorithms and processing chains for extracting various
forest metrics from TLS point clouds in a high performance computing (HPC)
environment using e.g. QSM and voxel approaches.

Job requirements: a PhD in remote sensing, computer vision, computer science,
engineering, physics, or a related geotechnologies field; experience with TLS
applications for forestry; Linux operating systems; at least 2 years of
programming.

To apply: Applicants should send an email to Dr. Jonathan Greenberg
(jgreenb...@unr.edu) with the subject line "TLS
Postdoc" with a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at
least three professional references. Applications will be accepted until a
suitable candidate is found. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant's
qualifications.

[ECOLOG-L] Second Call: Training Course - An Introduction To Using GIS/QGIS In Biological Research, 18-19 March 2019

2019-01-07 Thread Colin D. MacLeod
This is the second call for attendees for our upcoming introductory training
course for those who wish to learn how to use GIS in biological research, and
it will provide an introduction to using GIS in a wide variety of biological
research situations ranging from the basics of making maps through to studying
the spread of diseases and creating maps of species biodiversity. It will
consist of a series of background sessions on using GIS mixed in with practical
sessions where you will work directly with GIS software to complete various
tasks which biological researchers commonly need to be able to do.
The course will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 18th and 19th of March
2019 and it will be taught by Dr Colin D. MacLeod, who has more than 15 years
experience in using GIS for a wide variety of biological purposes. For those
who cannot attend this course in person, a shorter online course based on the
same materials is available from our sister site www.GISforBiologists.com.
The course will primarily be based around QGIS (also known as Quantum GIS),
which provides a user-friendly, open-source, free alternative to commercial GIS
software packages, and it is becoming increasingly widely used in both academic
and commercial organisations As a result, it is aimed at both those with no
GIS experience, but wish to learn how to do GIS with QGIS, and also those who
are familiar with using commercial GIS software, such as ArcGIS, but who wish
to learn how to use QGIS as an alternative. However, this course is taught
using software-independent approach, and it is also open to those who wish to
learn how to use ArcGIS to do biological GIS.

The practical exercises on this course will be based on those in the recently
published GIS For Biologists: A Practical Introduction For Undergraduates by
Dr MacLeod, and a free copy of this book will be provided to all participants.

Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 16 people, and the course will cost
£295 per person (£200 for students, the unwaged and those working for
registered charities). To book a place, or for more information, visit
http://gisinecology.com/an-introduction-to-using-gis-in-biological-research/ or
email i...@gisinecology.com.

Glasgow has great transport links and is within half a days travel by car or by
fast train links from most cities in the UK. For example, it can be reached in
as little as 4h 30mins from London by train. It can also be reached by direct
flights from many European cities and the flight time is generally under four
hours.

The exact venue for the course will be confirmed closer to the time of the
course, but it will be held in Glasgow city centre.

Attendees will be responsible for their own accommodation. However, Glasgow
provides a wide range of accommodation options to fit most budgets.

[ECOLOG-L] Courses: Quantitative Genetics, Barcelona, April 8-12 early bird extended

2019-01-07 Thread Soledad De Esteban Trvigno
Dear colleagues,

Early bird fee has been extended to January 31st for the course “Introduction
to Evolutionary Quantitative Genetics”

Instructors: Dr. Erik Postma (University of Exeter, UK) and Dr. Jesús
Martínez-Padilla (Universidad de Oviedo, Spain).

Dates and place: April 8th-12th, 2019. Capellades, Barcelona (Spain).

Check if you can benefit of 20 % discount:
https://www.transmittingscience.org/funding/organizations-with-discount/

Course Overview:

By simultaneously using the resemblance among all individuals in the pedigree,
these methods provide more precise and accurate estimates of genetic and
non-genetic variance components (heritabilities and genetic correlations).
Furthermore, they allow for the estimation of individual-level genetic effects
(breeding values), and thereby the inference of evolution.

In this course, we will cover everything from basic quantitative genetic theory
and statistics to advanced mixed model-based approaches. You will learn how to
estimate genetic variances and covariances in wild and captive populations, and
how to test for evolutionary change.

Along the way, you will be exposed to the main software packages, and the R
packages MCMCglmm and ASReml-R in particular, and you will learn about their
strengths and weaknesses.

You are strongly encouraged to bring your own data (if you have it), which you
will be able to work on during the course and which will allow you to put the
theory into practice.
