presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).

Proposals to organize a symposium at ICE2020Helsinki should be submitted by
the on-line submission system (
https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020). Proposals should
include a brief background/justification, the names of the organizers, a
preliminary list of potential speakers, and any other relevant issues.

Deadline: 31 December 2018

Guidelines for proposing symposia are at our website, link:

[ECOLOG-L] Fwd: New field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel plants

Тема: New field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel
plants
Кому: "Rene Eschen"
Копия:

Dear colleague,

As many of you will know, the number of emerging pests and diseases of
woody plants (i.e. species that have never previously been recorded outside
their native continent) is continuously increasing. Early warning of these
potential invaders before they arrive can be based on surveys of sentinel
plantings and nurseries, and of arboreta. However, such surveys will
necessarily face the presence of organisms and symptoms that have never
been observed before by the surveyors.

To facilitate the identification of the most likely causal agents of damage
to woody plants in situations where the exact identity of such agents is
unknown, *a field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel
plants has now been published*. The book is now available as a free
open-access e-book under the following link. No hard copies of the book
will be sold. http://www.cabi.org/cabebooks/ebook/20173265430

This guide is intended as an aid for managers of sentinel plantings,
botanical gardens or arboreta, as well as phytosanitary inspectors, who may
have knowledge of common pests and diseases of woody plants, but may not
know the likely cause of damage that they have not encountered before. It
aims to provide a tentative identification of relatively broad groups of
organisms and not definitive identification of the causal agents.

There are chapters that explain how to use the guide, followed by keys (for
different organs of conifer and broadleaf species) to guide the user to the
relevant sections of the book, based on the questions entomologists and
pathologists ask themselves when looking at a damaged or diseased tree in a
fashion similar to how a doctor interrogates a patient to arrive at a
diagnosis. The largest part of the book is devoted to the description and
illustration of damage types and typical causes of the observed damage.

The book is an output of COST Action FP1401 - A global network of nurseries
as early warning system against alien tree pests – “Global Warning” (
www.ibles.pl/cost).

Regards,

René.

Dear colleague,

In September, I will have to give an interactive seminar to PhD students
on *responses of insects to climate change* with particular focuses on
*North* and *invasive pest threats*. To do that, I would like to chose a
few papers with different approaches used and different model species,
which participants of the seminar can read and analyse in advance and then
present and discuss at the seminar.

I have some collection of papers, but if you have in mind any *particularly
good, *more or less recent, clear and impressive works involving preferably
forest or agricultural pests responding to climate change, please let me

[ECOLOG-L] Fwd: PhD position in invasion ecology

2015-12-10 Thread Дмитрий Мусолин
-- Forwarded message --
From: Rene Eschen
Date: 2015-12-03 19:17 GMT+03:00
Subject: PhD position in invasion ecology

Dear colleagues,

Please see the attached announcement for a PhD student position in Invasion
Ecology at CABI Switzerland and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest,
Snow and Landscape Research WSL.

I would be grateful if you would forward this message to any potential
candidates.

Invasive alien pests and pathogens of plants are among the greatest threats
to forest
ecosystems worldwide. The majority of such organisms are introduced through
international
trade, and most were unknown to science prior to introduction. A powerful
tool to identify
potentially harmful organisms in their region of origin is the use of
sentinel plantings, which
enable the assessment of the risk associated with the identified organisms
and the
development of mitigation measures.

We are inviting applications for a PhD position in Invasion Ecology (100%)
to develop
optimal sampling strategies for use in sentinel plantings. For this, tree
species from different
continents will be monitored and potential pests and pathogens identified.
The PhD project is part of a collaboration between CABI Switzerland and the
Swiss Federal
Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, with collaborators
in China and the
US, and is closely linked with COST Action Global Warning (FP1401).
Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Ecology, Entomology or Pathology or
another
relevant discipline. Experience with molecular identification techniques
and statistical
analysis (R), as well as the ability to collaborate and work independently
are desired.
Candidates with experience in both field and laboratory techniques, and
those with an interest
in both pathology and entomology have an advantage. Strong oral and written
communication
skills in English are required. The successful candidate is expected to
start in February or
March 2016 with funding for three years.

Applicants should send a letter of motivation that explains their research
experience and
interests, a CV including publications, if relevant, and a list of three
professional references.
Application review will start 3 January until the position is filled.
Complete applications must
be addressed to Dr. René Eschen (r.esc...@cabi.org). Further information
can be obtained by
Dr. René Eschen (CABI; r.esc...@cabi.org; +41 32 421 48 87) or Dr. Simone
Prospero
