Webinar Abstract:
Since 1998, Software Carpentry has evolved from a week-long training course
at the US national laboratories into a worldwide volunteer effort to
improve researchers' computing skills. In this webinar, Software
Carpentry's co-founder will explore what's been learned along the away
about what scientists, engineers, and other researchers actually need to
know about programming in order to make their work more shareable, more
reproducible, more likely to be correct, and more efficient. He will also
discuss practices that the DataONE community and similar groups may be able
to use to help researchers deal with large or messy data in a broad range
of disciplines.

Webinar Abstract:

Earth Science communities can improve the discoverability, use and
understanding of their data by improving the completeness and consistency
of their metadata. Despite the potential for a great payoff, resources to
invest in this work are often limited. We are working with DataONE Member
Nodes to quantitatively evaluate their metadata and to identify specific
strategies to improve the completeness and consistency of their metadata.
We have developed an iterative, guided process intended to efficiently
improve metadata to better serve their own communities, as well as share
data across disciplines. The community specific approach focuses on
community metadata requirements, and also provides guidance on adding other
metadata concepts to expand the effectiveness of metadata for multiple
uses, including data discovery, data understanding, and data re-use. The
end goal of this work is to help communities improve their metadata based
on their own requirements through time.

We will present the results of a baseline analysis of more than 25 diverse
metadata collections from established data repositories representing
communities across the earth and environmental sciences. The baseline
analysis describes the current state of the metadata in these collections
and highlights areas for improvement. We compare these collections to
demonstrate exemplar practitioners that can provide guidance to other
communities.

In addition, we are building web-based tools based on a common metadata
evaluation library that can be incorporated into community tools such as
metadata editors and repository platforms, as well as form the core of a
metadata completeness reporting service that is integrated within specific
partner information systems such as the DataONE Coordinating Node services
and the Mercury Online Metadata Editor. This aspect of the project is
forthcoming and we will discuss the plans for the future.

Webinar Abstract:
Drawing from examples within the taxonomic and natural history collection
communities, this webinar will detail the data types and challenges of
biological specimen data. We’ll explore the value and import of data
quality open resources, the current status of data assurance practices as
well as some more practical 'how-to’ examples of implementing data quality
assurance (QA) methods. For example, QA of publicly shared data is critical
for effective use and reuse. As part of the data life cycle, QA often
occurs following the collection of data. However, planning for quality
assurance in advance of data collection is time efficient and much cheaper
than trying to clean up and standardize later. QA planning can help avoid
commonly occurring data collection / entry errors.

Webinar Abstract:
DataONE is a community driven project providing access to data across
multiple Member Node repositories, supporting enhanced search and discovery
of Earth and environmental science data. Data and metadata from across this
distributed network of data centers, science networks and organizations is
discoverable through DataONE Search, the newly released search and
discovery tool. This webinar will introduce the community to DataONE, to
the distributed network of DataONE Member Node repositories, the types and
volume of data exposed through the network and provide an overview
demonstration of DataONE Search. We will then describe the recent changes
in our v2 infrastructure and show how these advancements allow for new and

Webinar Abstract:
In 2014, Wiley invited thousands of researchers from all disciplines and
all geographies to participate in a large scale survey on data sharing. The
goal of the research was to identify the what, where, how and why behind
researcher data sharing currently, and the barriers that keep researchers
from sharing. This session will explore the results of that study along
with the outputs of other recent surveys into researcher perceptions of and
behaviours around data sharing.

[ECOLOG-L] Education / Outreach Postdoc Position

2014-08-18 Thread Amber E Budden
We are recruiting a postdoctoral associate to work in the education and
engagement of scientists and other stakeholders in the collaborative
process of improving access to scientific data across Earth and
environmental sciences and in supporting the community in the use of
DataONE tools and services. The postdoc will be funded by an NSF award to
the DataONE project (www.dataone.org) at the University of New Mexico.

Role responsibilities: The responsibilities of this postdoctoral position
include participation in a team effort to inform development of
cyberinfrastructure for the environmental sciences through collaboration
with DataONE's Community Engagement and Outreach Working Group, in addition
to individual activities in support of the community engagement and
outreach objectives of DataONE. More explicitly, position requirements
include participation in the enhancement of training materials to convey
best practices in data management, the development of tutorials / learning
aids for the promotion of software and tools associated with the DataONE
project, oversight of a webinar series and associated outreach, among other
duties. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal
communication skills to facilitate collaboration within a broad network of
colleagues across disciplines and for engagement with the wider DataONE
community.

Many research projects could be complementary to the role envisioned for
this postdoctoral position, depending on the candidate's background and
interests. For example, opportunities exist for research projects related
to science education, sociology of science, or ecology and environmental
science at the interface with technology.

Qualifications: Candidates should have (or soon have) a Ph.D. in
Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Information or Library Science, Sociology,
or another relevant field. The successful candidate will have proven
information and project management skills, demonstrated excellent
communication skills through a record of publication and public
presentation, and a strong interest in advancing the scientific endeavor
through education, engagement and providing access to existing knowledge.
The successful candidate will have an understanding and demonstrated skill
in science data management, experience with software for visual media
creation and editing (screencast, film and audio editing software),
experience with social media, and experience, or a willingness to learn
about, software supporting online education environments.

DataONE is a geographically distributed project, with many remotely
participating members. The postdoc in this position will be expected to be
an active member of the DataONE community, engaging in dialog via
teleconference and traveling to DataONE meetings and for presentation of
DataONE work at conferences.

To apply: Interested candidates should send a CV, a brief statement of
interest in this position, and a list 3 references and their contact
information to the postdoc advisor, Dr. Amber Budden (Director for
Community Engagement and Outreach, DataONE, UNM; Center Associate, NCEAS,
UCSB) at aebud...@dataone.unm.edu. Review of applications will begin
