Postdoctoral Research Associate Position length: One year appointment with possible extensions up to a total of 3.5 years Application Deadline: June 24, 2011, or until suitable candidate is found START DATE: July 16, 2011 SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience Position Summary: The New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position to develop models to evaluate population status of select wildlife species, using spatial capture-recapture methods. The project will involve designing the field study, occupancy estimation using previously collected track-plate data, analysis of field data using spatial capture-recapture models, submitting manuscripts for publication, and communicating research to project sponsors. There will be opportunities for participating in field research. The candidate will be primarily supervised by Dr. Angela Fuller, U. S. Geological Survey, NY Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, at Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) and will work closely with Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. J. Andy Royle, U. S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (Laurel, Maryland). The postdoctoral scientist will be housed in the Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University and will make several trips to Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and potentially to other locations to brief project sponsors. Minimum Requirements: 1. Ph.D. in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related quantitative field. 2. Strong programming skills with demonstrated knowledge of statistical modeling used to describe population dynamics from mark-recapture data. 3. Demonstrated desire and proven ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals. 4. Excellent writing and personal communication skills. 5. Exceptional command of written and spoken English. 6. The ability to work independently and under limited supervision. Recommended qualifications: Competitive candidates will also have one or more of the following qualifications: have a background in Bayesian inference, hierarchical modeling, occupancy modeling, ability to design wildlife studies, proficiency with R and WinBUGS, experience with ArcGIS, and experience in database construction and management. The Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University seeks a highly motivated individual to provide a high level of research support in reviewing New York's list of endangered, threatened, and special concern species lists, with emphasis on prioritization and updating the Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). The individual will work with the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit scientists (Dr. Angela Fuller and Dr. William Fisher) and staff from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Fish, Wildlife and Marine resources. The selected individual will assist to establish a priority ranking scheme for SGCN by engaging taxonomic working groups, key conservation partners, species experts, NYSDEC staff, and governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations in helping to define objectives for the listing recommendations as well as objectives in developing the priority ranking scheme for the SGCN. Prepare written and oral research reports. This research position date will term on 3/31/2012 with possible extension until 9/30/2014, depending on funding. This position is located in Albany, New York. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree; 2-3 years of experience or equivalence in biological sciences (e.g., wildlife or fisheries ecology, conservation biology, natural resources, landscape ecology). * Must be personable, flexible, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both oral and written). * Must have the ability to develop effective working relationships with faculty, staff, federal and state agencies, NGOs and work effectively and cooperatively with others. * Familiarity with using geographic information systems software (e.g., ArcGIS). * Ability to work independently as well in a team setting to handle multiple tasks and priorities. * Evidence of independent research skills is required. * Travel is required and must possess a valid U.S. driver's license. Assistant Unit Leader - Ecologist; New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit The Cooperative Research Units Program of the U. S. Geological Survey is currently filling the position of Assistant Unit Leader - Ecologist at the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. This position is with the U. S. Geological Survey and is located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The incumbent will be appointed to the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell at an academic ranking commensurate with experience. Qualification Requirements: Basic Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. Graduate Research Assistantships (2) New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Cornell University, Department of Natural Resources Two graduate research assistantships are available with the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University to research black bear ecology in New York: 1) M.S. or Ph.D. student to model bear-habitat relationships and develop metrics of landscape permeability that represents the utilization likelihood of black bears across their range in New York. Student will be advised by Dr. Angela Fuller. 2) M.S. or Ph.D. student to design a large-scale DNA mark-recapture study using hair snares to be used for population abundance estimation, and to evaluate northeast regional population structure of black bears. Student will be co-advised by Dr. Angela Fuller and Dr. Matthew Hare. Qualifications: The successful applicants will have an outstanding academic background including a B.S. or M.S. degree in Ecology, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Conservation Biology, or a closely related field. Both projects will require an exceptional work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, strong English writing and oral communication skills, and field-based research experiences. For project #1) I seek a highly motivated individual who desires to combine extensive fieldwork with GIS analysis and modeling.
