[ECOLOG-L] 2 tenure track positions in Agronomy, Purdue University.
Hi all: The department of agronomy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana is seeking applications for two Assistant/Associate Professors of Agronomy emphasizing the use of modelling and prediction. Candidates should bridge the modeling and empirical world to be competitive. Two positions are available: 1) focused on improving yield potential and agronomic performance of crop plants and; 2) focused on interactions of crops with the environment. Please share this posting with anyone you think would be a good candidate for these positions. https://jobs.sciencecareers.org/job/490943/assistant-associate-professor-of-agronomy-in-digital-agriculture-2-positions-/ Thanks, Gordon McNickle, Assistant Professor, Botany and Plant Pathology, Purdue University.
[ECOLOG-L] Your help to save an 80 year old study
Hi all: I started a crowd funding campaign to try and maintain an 80 year old study of forest dynamics at Purdue University. It has seen two faculty members over that time (both now retired), and I'm hoping to keep it going. It's one of the longest ecological studies around. So far, I have been unable to secure funding through traditional grants, so I thought I would try a crowdfunding campaign out of curiosity. The response has been interesting. I have had so much positive support from EcoLog, from social media and from colleagues. Over 4000 people have visited the campaign web page! But, interestingly, only 37 have backed the project. If all 4000 put in just $11.50 it would be funded. Anyway, there are 7 days left in the campaign, and it is all or nothing. Either we reach the goal together, or we get nothing. This will be my last plea to the community. Feel free to share and redistribute the links. There are several 'lab notes' on the page with more details about the Ross Reserve. Thanks again for all the support, and for reading this far. :) https://experiment.com/projects/80-years-of-forest-dynamics-at-ross-biological-reserve Cheers, Gord McNickle, Assistant professor, Purdue University.
[ECOLOG-L] help save an 80 year data set
Hi EcoLog, I need your help to save an 80 year old long-term study of forest dynamics. Purdue's Ross Reserve forest has been measured continuously every 10 years since 1949. The next census is due in 2019, and I haven't been able to fund a crew to measure the trees with the state of science funding in the USA right now. I imagine everyone here knows the importance of long term data in Ecology. These data are similar to data from places like Barro Colorado Island (BCI), except The Ross Reserve has been measured for 50 years longer than BCI. It's one of the oldest data sets I know, and it would be a shame if it ended with the retirement of the prof who has been maintaining it. I've started a crowd funding campaign. There's a video, and more details at the link below. If you would consider giving, and sharing the link, we might be able to maintain these data together. https://experiment.com/projects/80-years-of-forest-dynamics-at-ross-biological-reserve Thanks, Gordon McNickle Assistant Professor, Botany and Plant Pathology, Purdue University.
[ECOLOG-L] Grad student position to study mycorrhizae and evolutionary game theory (MSc or PhD possible), Purdue University
I am seeking motivated independent graduate students to work on a project examining how plants respond to mycorrhizae as an evolutionary game, and the ecological consequences of these responses. Students should have an interest in field work, and in using mathematical models to develop testable hypotheses for field experiments. [ECOLOG-L] Eight Assistant Professor Tenure-Track Positions in Plant Biology
The College of Agriculture at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, invites applications from outstanding basic scientists for eight academic year tenure-track assistant professor positions that will comprise a college-wide cluster hire in fundamental plant biology. Candidates utilizing modern methods to address important questions in plant biology including but not limited to genomics and molecular genetics, computational modeling, biosensor/imaging, synthetic biology and metabolism are all encouraged to apply. We are interested in individuals working on molecular, organismal or ecosystem levels, and in model systems, crops, or natural systems. We envision that the majority of candidates will be considered for positions in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology and the Department of Biochemistry. Positions are also available in the Department of Agronomy, the Department of Entomology, the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, and the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture for individuals conducting basic plant science research but with an interest in application of their research in more applied contexts. Each successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research program, interact with diverse faculty, staff and students across campus, and contribute to the further development of plant science as an area of excellence on the Purdue University campus. Each such candidate will also teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses, and function as an active member of the departmental and university faculty. Purdue University is a large and vibrant life science community. Our faculty spans disciplines that include biological sciences, physical and computational sciences, agriculture and engineering. Faculty also participate in interdisciplinary graduate programs with focus areas in plant biology, cancer biology, neuroscience, biophysics, gene regulation and bioinformatics. This hiring initiative is part of the Plant Sciences Research and Education Pipeline, through which are being developed facilities for genome editing, high-throughput controlled environment imaging and field-scale phenotyping, and a plant commercialization incubator. Core facilities for genomics, bioinformatics, microscopy, metabolomics, NMR, X-ray crystallography, flow cytometry and proteomics are available. Substantial resources for field-based research are also available near campus and throughout the state. Purdue University’s College of Agriculture is one of the world’s leading colleges of agricultural, food, life, and natural-resource sciences and is ranked number 5 globally in the 2015 QS World University Rankings. The College is deeply committed to the three land-grant missions (teaching, research, and extension), to international activities and perspectives that span all missions, and to supporting a diverse and inclusive environment. Purdue is an ADVANCE institution – www.purdue.edu/dp/advance. The College has 11 academic departments and includes 330 faculty, 2,710 undergraduate students, and 685 graduate students. The College’s strategic plan can be accessed at https://www2.ag.purdue.edu/Pages/strategicplan.aspx. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in life, computational, or physical sciences, preferably with at least two years of post-doctoral experience or its equivalent, a strong publication record, the potential to develop a vigorous, extramurally funded research program, and a commitment to both hypothesis-driven research and teaching excellence. Applications should be submitted electronically to molecula...@purdue.edu and should include in a single pdf file a cover letter, curriculum vitae, two page summary of research interests, a one-page teaching statement, and the names and contact information for three references. Applicants may learn more about the departments involved in this search at https://ag.purdue.edu/plantsciences/pages/molecularag.aspx and indicate in their application up to two departments of greatest interest. Screening of applications will begin October 15, 2015, and will continue until the positions are filled. http://www.purdue.edu/ethics/Search_Screen/Faculty_Openings/Agriculture/3338-2015.html
