[ECOLOG-L] Editor Needed for Reviews of Geophysics in Biogeosciences

2018-07-10 Thread Gregory Okin
All –

We seek a new Editor to join the editorial board of Reviews of Geophysics in
the field of Biogeosciences, with a focus on biogeosciences of the Earth system
in the past, present, and future, and the extension of this research to
planetary studies. This additional position will expand the editorial board
from five to six. Applicants should be dynamic, well-organized,
independent-minded, and even-handed scientists with robust knowledge in this
field. Previous editorial experience is preferable but not necessary. As Editor
you should be committed to strengthening Reviews of Geophysics as the leading
journal in the field of geophysics, and be proactive in attracting innovative
contributions. This will involve promoting the journal, especially at
conferences you attend, and helping to write highlights of selected papers
published in the journal. We hold regular teleconferences throughout the year,
as well as a full editorial board meeting at the Fall AGU Meeting, to discuss
management and strategic goals of the journal.

As Editor, you will receive a stipend, travel budget, free access to all AGU
journals, and free registration and a delicious Editor’s dinner at the Fall AGU
Meeting. For more information pertaining to Reviews of Geophysics scope and
review procedures, please read the Editorial at http://rdcu.be/HVTt/.

The search committee is committed to diversity and highly encourages women and
minorities to apply. International applicants are welcome. If you would like to
be considered for this position with Reviews of Geophysics, please send your
curriculum vitae with a letter of interest via email to
pubmatt...@agu.org.

If you would like to nominate a highly qualified colleague, then please send a
letter of recommendation to the same email address. Please make sure that you

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc Position - plant physiology and aeolian processes - University of Arizona/Jornada Experimental Range

2017-05-03 Thread Gregory Okin
Apologies for any cross-postings.

The School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of
Arizona has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a new grant
funded by the National Science Foundation. This individual will conduct field
and controlled environment studies on the effects of wind-borne sediments on
dryland vegetation. Ecophysiological quantification of plant species/functional
group responses to ‘sandblasting’ will be integrated with sediment
flux-vegetation models to quantitatively assess the role of aeolian processes
in driving state transformations and desertification in the context of changes
in land use and climate.

This individual will conduct gas-exchange measurements on plants experiencing
windborne sediment flux and will aid in setting up and conducting experiments
to test hypothesis about the interaction between wind and vegetation. Scaling
this information to community/landscape-levels will be achieved using existing,
but contrasting, dynamic simulation models. The successful candidate will be
based in Tucson at the University of Arizona, but will be expected to spend
extended periods of time conducting field work at the Chihuahuan Desert Jornada
LTER site near Las Cruces, NM (about 4 h drive from Tucson). The post-doctoral
associate is expected to actively engage with collaborators at UCLA and the
USDA Agricultural Research Service in Las Cruces, to generate peer-reviewed
publications in top-tier scientific journals and to serve as Co-PI on future
proposals.

We seek an individual with demonstrated expertise in plant ecophysiology (gas
exchange, water relations, and physiology-morphology linkages in the context of
plant growth and development) or familiarity with measurement of aeolian
sediment transport processes in arid lands and experience with dynamic
simulation modeling, statistics and database management including skills in R,
Matlab, SAS or equivalent.

UCLA. At the time of appointment, applicants must have a Ph.D. in geography,
ecology, or a related discipline, and demonstrated proficiency in the
spatiotemporal analysis of large remote sensing datasets across wide
geographical areas. Demonstrated proficiency in R, Matlab, IDL, Python, and/or
equivalent is required. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Machine Learning
techniques is required, as is experience developing in Google Earth Engine's
Python API. An interest in working with land management agency personnel to
develop tools for visualization and management is desired. Interest in engaging
in mentoring opportunities with graduate students is desirable. Fluency in
written and spoken English is required. Salary commensurate with experience.

[ECOLOG-L] AGU Session: Ecogeomorphology: feedbacks between biota and sediment transport at the earth surface

2014-07-28 Thread Gregory Okin
Dear Colleagues,

We invite abstract submissions to the “Ecogeomorphology: feedbacks between
biota and sediment transport at the earth surface” session at the 2014 AGU Fall
Meeting.

https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/webprogrampreliminary/Session1632.html

Session description:

The feedbacks between biota and landscape are often difficult to determine. The
roles of life as control of earth surface morphodynamics is largely unknown and
only recently researchers have started exploring these intricate interactions.
The goal of this session is to investigate how the earth surface is shaped by
vegetation, animals and micro-organisms and subsequently how these ecosystems
evolve within the newly generated landscape. Examples of study topics in this
new and exciting field are the feedbacks between sediment transport and biology
and the spatial organization of vegetation on terrestrial landscapes. We
encourage submissions of ecogeomorphic studies based on observations,
laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling. Emphasis will be given to novel
research that investigates the resilience of coupled ecological-geomorphic
systems to climate change. In particular, we seek ecogeomorphic contributions
in coastal and marine processes, aeolian processes, hillslope dynamics, glacial
and periglacial landscapes, and tectonic geomorphology.
