The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University (APSU) invites 
applications 
for an Assistant Professor – Ecologist. This is a 9-month, tenure-track 
position to 
begin August 2019. We are seeking a colleague whose interests complement and 
expand the Department’s existing strengths in ecology, evolution, and 
organismal 
biology (http://www.apsu.edu/biology/).

Preferred qualifications include experience in the use of innovative 
inquiry-based 
methods of instruction and experience teaching at the college level. Teaching 
expectations for this position include Introductory Biology, a General Ecology 
course 
with lab, and the development of other courses in the candidate’s area of 
expertise. 
Candidates working in any area of Ecology will be given full consideration. 
Potential 
areas of interest include, but are not limited to: (1) Ecogeography, (2) 
Ecological 
application of GIS, (3) Wildlife Ecology, and (4) Conservation Biology. 
Candidates are 
expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) education 
and 
research.

A typical teaching load is two lectures and two labs per semester. Teaching 
assignments may involve travel to regional sites and/or distance learning 
formats. 
Candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching 
and 
advising, aid in curriculum development, and provide service to the Department 
and 
College.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Biology, Ecology, or closely related 
field; ABD 
will be considered if all requirements are met by date of hire. Candidates 
should have a 
record of scholarly achievement and demonstrate the ability to develop an 
extramurally funded research program appropriate for a regional university. 
Modest 
research space and equipment will be made available based on synergy with 
existing 
faculty research programs. We are interested in candidates with experience in 
mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving 
access 
of underserved populations to graduate and professional programs in biology. A

[ECOLOG-L] M.S. Research Assistantship in Conservation Genetics at APSU

A research assistantship is available through the Center of Excellence for 
Field Biology (CEFB) and Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University 
(APSU) with an intended start date in early June 2017.

The successful applicant will collaborate with APSU faculty and state agencies 
to investigate the conservation status and genetic diversity of the Piebald 
Madtom (Noturus gladiator). Work will include field surveys and collection and 
analysis of next-generation sequence data (SNPs) to address questions related 
to the population and conservation genetics of the Piebald Madtom to fulfill 
research requirements of an M.S. thesis-based degree in Biology at APSU.

The successful applicant will be supported as a Graduate Research Assistant 
that includes payment of tuition and an academic year stipend for two years, 
and three months of summer salary each year (totaling ~$18,00/year). Additional 
resources such as field vehicles and all necessary lab equipment will be 
available for use through the CEFB. Renewal of this award in year two will be 
based on performance in the preceding year.

Required qualifications include (1) a B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Evolution, or a 
related field, (2) a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and combined GRE of 310 or 
higher; (3) excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, 
(4) strong self-motivation and (5) ability to work well independently and with 
a team.  Previous research experience, particularly involving fish collection 
and identification and/or molecular data collection and analyses strongly 
preferred.
