[ECOLOG-L] Help with snake book
Hello Everyone: Team Snake Panama (www.lamica.org/teamsnakepanama.html) is finishing an important book on The Venomous Snakes and Mimics of Panama and Costa Rica. The book is geared towards students, tourists, local people, and researchers, especially those not focusing on snakes and hopes to provide an important aid in snake conservation and in the reduction of snakebite in remote areas. The book includes 45 species with identification information, color photographs, and range maps. We also include a list of hospitals by province and background information on each country, how to prevent and treat snakebites, and information on conservation efforts for snakes. Book is in English and Spanish and includes symbols and color-coding for easy use. We need a little bit of help and perhaps you can assist! 1. We are missing some photographs of either species or unique morphs within a species. Please write for complete list of snakes. We would prefer photos taken in Costa Rica or Panama, but may need to substitute in others. 2. Small donations to help us finish the book and get it to press. Additional funds will be used to distribute copies to remote clinics, schools, park offices, etc. within Panama and Costa Rica. We are offering acknowledgement in the book and a free signed copy when it is done for a $50 donate now. Visit www.lamica.org/teamsnakepanama.html and click on any Donate button to contribute. Please note if you would like the acknowledgement in a name other than your own. 3. Ideas of what you would like to see included in such a guide. We feel that we have covered a lot of important topics, but perhaps you have a great idea we overlooked! Please email us with any questions or suggestions! Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Update on bird guide message (01 August)
For those interested: Earlier this month I sent out a message asking for suggestions on how to help an impoverished local person become a fulltime bird guide/naturalist for our project (see original message below). Thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions! Some of you suggested you would be interested in donating to such a cause if we had an account set up for such. I just wanted to pass along that we have set up an account where such donations can be deposited through La MICA Biological Station (501c3 nonprofit status in progress). If interested in donating any amount please visit www.lamica.org/Donate.html. If you would like to donate an amount over $500 please email us for additional instructions. We hope to raise about $3000 per year so even small donations will go alog way. We will be happy to share any publications resulting from this work with donors. Thank you! Julie ___ Original Message... Hello - I am the director of La MICA Biological Station (http://www.lamica.org/) located in central Panama. We have a local person, Santana, who is an amazing birder. He worked with George Angehr several years ago as a local guide and since then has been really interested in birds. He still has the book and binoculars that Angehr left him and for the last 15 or so years has been documenting, recording, and looking for birds. For the past several years he has worked as the janitor at our school so he can support his 2 kids. He makes about $200-$250 a month at the school. We rarely can hire him as a guide because he is only available on the weekends, but I had a group this past week that utilized him as a guide because he had the week off. Santana is simply incredible. He has personally documented 375 species (www.lamica.org/species.html) locally and learned the calls, plus memorized the whole book so he instantly shows a guest the picture and common name in English. Furthermore, he has taught himself how to type and keep good notes. Obviously Santana would be a huge asset to La MICA as a guide. If we could match his earnings at the school he would immediately become a naturalist for us, available to guide tour for guests, help students, or collect data (he also knows the frogs and many of the other local plants and animals) when we have no visitors. He leaving the school would open that position up for someone who does not have additional skills like Santana does. I have been thinking about this for the past couple of days and wondering how we may be able to secure the $2500-$3000 a year to hire him on a baseline salary. I wonder if any organizations may be interested in funding such a project (perhaps in exchange for free guide when visiting). Could some organization benefit from the data he could collect and would be willing to help with the wages in exchange for the opportunity to help him publish his data? Perhaps you know of someone who may be better suited to provide suggestions. Obviously we are not talking about a huge amount of money so even a few small contributions (www.lamica.org/Donate.html) would accummulate quickly and reach the goal. I very much welcome any suggestions or ideas! Thank you!! Julie Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] La MICA Biological Station update
Hello - Many of you have followed the progress of the development of La MICA Biological Station located in central Panama from an idea to today, with nearly three years of operation. Most of you know that we have had a difficult year, following the unexpected closing of our nonprofit fiscal sponsor in January. Since then we have worked with a couple of potential new fiscal sponsors, but for them to take on a new project is very difficult and we have been unable to secure a sponsor. Regardless, the project has moved forward thanks to very kind donations (www.lamica.org/Donate.html), support through our Amazon.com Associates program (when shopping on Amazon.com enter through our webpage www.lamica.org/supplies by clicking on any link. Any purchase you make will earn a portion of the proceeds for our project), and much encouragement from the biological community and beyond. We have now welcomed over 200 visitors and have 24 publications out in just 2.5 years! Despite the recent setbacks we are committed to our project, not only for conservation but for the local people who dedicate so much time and effort. Therefore, we have decided to move forward with setting up our own nonprofit organization. We welcome any message from people who have suggestions about setting up and maintaining a conservation-oriented nonprofit, especially with an international (outside US) component. We would also like to hear from people who may be interested in being board members or who simply have suggestions or words of encouragement/warning for us. Thank you for all of your support, in every form! Julie Julie M. Ray, MSc, PhD Director La MICA Biological Station Fundación Centro de Investigación Biológica El Copé, S.A. [ECOLOG-L] .pdf about La MICA Biological Station
Hello Everyone - I know that several of you have been following the development of La MICA Biological Station (http://www.lamica.org/), a community-run project located in Cocle Province, Panama. Recently a group of students from Delaware State University visited the station. They were only able to come because some of our donors kindly sponsored them, thus forming the La MICA Biological Station Student Scholarship Fund (www.lamica.org/Donate.html). The students put together a .pdf about their trip and to thank the donors. I wanted to pass along a link where you can download the .pdf (http://www.lamica.org/Visit_Us.html). This is a great way for you to see what is happening at La MICA and to provide some insight if you are looking for a place to bring a class one day. La MICA Biological Station just turned 2.5 years old and we have already welcomed almost 200 guests and have ~23 publications out or in press/review. A lot of this has been possible because of support and suggestions from you. Thank you and please enjoy the .pdf! Julie Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Panama Snake Photos
I wanted to pass along that Team Snake Panama (htt Hello Everyone - I wanted to pass along that Team Snake Panama (http://www.lamica.org/teamsnakepanama.html) has set up a page where people can submit pictures of snakes that they take while in Panama. We are going to use this information to map where different species are found (a lot of areas are unstudied) for the conservation of snakes and to help local people and tourists to avoid snake bites. The link is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFkyWEhwd01KSHlwVVVQMnRtMjM1b1E6MQ. When you find a snake, please snap some pictures of it and then access this link. Fill in as much information as you can and then follow the instructions for sending the photos. Please pass along this information. ANY record will aid us in this project. Please even submit those photos you already have taken (province and the photo are the most important data points). Thank you! Julie Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Collaboration in Panama - many taxa
Hello Everyone - La MICA Biological Station (www.lamica.org) and Team Snake Panama (www.lamica.org/teamsnakepnama.html) are developing a transect in central Panama running between the Pan-American highway (Pacific versant, 100 m) over the Continental Divide to the Caribbean versant. We have begun a fundraiser involving the general public (see below) and will be putting out cover objects along the transect. Future plans include active searchs and drift fences. Our research will focus primarily on snakes and secondarily on other reptiles and amphibians. Cover objects are not widdely used in the tropics, but we anticipate a variety of taxa, especially invertebrates, herps, and small mammals, utilizing the cover. If anyone has interested in potential collaborations, please send an email to Julie at la.m...@yaho.com to further discuss the project. Furthermore you can request a map of the area. See below if you would like to help the project with a donation. Thank you! Julie __ Adopt A Cover Object!Team Snake Panama (TSP) is invoking on a new research expedition and you can come along! A new road now allows access onto the Atlantic versant in central Panama. This road continues on from our entrance road making it possible to travel from almost the Pacific coast to almost the Caribbean coast in a matter of a couple of hours! This presents the opportunity to study all sorts of characteristics of the flora and fauna. TSP will focus on the snakes. In the US it is common to lay out cover objects to attract and increase the chances of finding snakes. Although this method is not widely used in the tropics, one of the objectives for the new study is to look at the leaf litter snakes. This group is very much understudied throughout the country and little is known about even their general biology. In short, we are going to set up arrays of tin cover objects (later followed by drift fences and active searches) from the Pacific to the Caribbean. We are offering you the opportunity to “adopt a cover object”. With your donation we will purchase the tin and pay local people to cut the sheets to size and distribute them to the appropriate sites. Extra funds will pay for gasoline and local field assistants to check the boards. In exchange for your donation you can follow your cover object(s). Receive updates and photos of the various critters we find under your objects (not just limited to snakes but potentially rodents, insects, lizards, etc.)!How it works: 1. Choose an area where you would like your object placed (see map - request from Julie). Some areas will be surveyed sooner and more frequently than others, but there are a variety of habitats available. We have named each area after a famous herpetologist who has conducted research in Panama. 2. Choose the number of cover objects you would like to adopt. Adopt one object for $10 or an array (6 objects) for $50. 3. Visit Make check to: Julie Ray Send check to: Julie Ray, 12458 132nd Street, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729 Please note in the memo line “Adopt a Cover Object” 4. Alternatively, you can send a check.julie.ray@lamica.orgto tell me in which section you would like your boards and to provide an email address where updates can be sent to you. [ECOLOG-L] update from La MICA Biological Station
Hello Everyone – Several people have written recently inquire about how La MICA Biological Station is doing since the unexpected demise of our nonprofit fiscal sponsor in mid-January (see http://www.lamica.org/ppsupport.htmlfor more details). We would like to pass along an update. First, thank you to everyone for all of your concern and encouragement through this very difficult time. Thank you very much to those of you who kindly offered donations despite the fact that you could not receive a tax deduction for your gift. It is these very funds that have kept our project alive over the past nearly three months. Also, thank you to our recent students and group who volunteered a great amount of help around La MICA and provided some work for our local people. Finally, thank you to the local people who continue to sacrifice for and believe in this project. We currently are working on arrangements with another fiscal sponsor. We are waiting to make the grand announcement until everything is completely in order, but we are very excited and thankful for the opportunity. We also have begun paperwork to set up our own independent nonprofit organization. This process can take up to a year to finalize, so we will utilize a fiscal sponsor until everything is in order. So, right now we continue a holding pattern; we are not making any significant advancement, but are maintaining our project despite the huge curve ball that was thrown at us. If anyone would like to make a small donation to aid us in this time as we wait for everything to come into place, please visit http://www.lamica.org/ppsupport.htmland make a donation through PayPal (no account needed). Even the smallest contribution goes a long way in Panama and every penny will go to maintaining our project and most importantly our local people during this time. THANK YOU to everyone for continuing to believe in La MICA Biological Station and our mission for conservation and humanity in central Panama!! [ECOLOG-L] Annual report, recent difficulties
Hello Everyone – La MICA Biological Station (El Copé, Coclé Province , Panama ) has begun its third year of operation. Many of you have followed our progress; here is an update on our project. We have finished our annual report for 2011 and it soon will be available on our website (http://www.lamica.org). Email Julie (la.m...@yahoo.com) to receive a .pdf copy via email. Secondly we appreciate the support we have received in light of the news regarding our fiscal sponsor. La MICA’s US-based nonprofit organization, Amigos Support La MICA, was one of 200 programs sheltered by the 501c3 International Humanities Center . In January this organization suddenly and unexpectedly closed its door, taking with it any remaining donations remaining in their projects' accounts. Extensive media coverage has uncovered many unsettling details about what really happened. Luckily for La MICA we had recently made a withdrawal from our account, but we sill lost about two months of operating funds. This has been very difficult to deal with and has resulted in down and defeated spirits among the dedicated Panamanians involved in our project. However, we are continuing to fight through this setback and hope to set up our own nonprofit organization during 2012. For more details please visit www.lamica.org/ppsupport.html. We appreciate the continued support from the biological community. Julie Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Tropical Facility for the Disabled
Many of your have followed our exciting development of La MICA Biological Station in central Panama from the ground up with limited funding exclusively from small donations from people like you. Also, some of you are aware that I have a severe visual disability that has greatly reduced my central vision. A lot of people have worked hard to give me the opportunity to study in the tropics. I feel that the tropics are something that everyone should experience, if only for a week or two, whether as a student, researcher, or general tourist. Obviously many people with a variety of disabilities are limited in their adventures because of logistics and a lack of facilities/opportunities. I have been investigating and exploring the idea of constructing lodging in association with La MICA Biological Station (although located off our current campus to allow vehicle access) that would facilitate people with a variety of physical disabilities. I also envision constructing an interactive trail within the local forest that would be handicap assessable. Although an experience for a disabled person may be limited, it would still be amazing and allow so many others to explore the diversity of the tropics. We then would develop programs to assist our visitors in exploring the local environment. I envision this experience being available for foreign visitors, but also for a number of local Panamanians, mainly children, who have physical disabilities and are typically left behind when their school class visits the national park. I am seeking suggestions on anything related to this topic, including feasibility for any physical disability and associated available equipment/accommodations, interest in partaking in such a project, and ideas for potential funding sources to help us in the development of the project. I realize that this may be a challenge, but I feel strongly about developing this project and welcome any and all suggestions. [ECOLOG-L] Snakes of Panama field guide
Hello everyone: Information for those of you who are interested: Over 3 million people live in the Republic of Panama and include Panamanians and foreign ex-pats. 331,000 tourists visit each year. 150 species of snakes share this environment and little is known about any of them. It is essential that local people and tourists, along with students and researchers, are able to identify these animals, especially the venomous ones. Furthermore, this book will add significantly to science and will be sought after by many who study or simply enjoy reptiles and amphibians. Currently no reference exists for Panama. We have assembled 2 snake ecologists, Dr. Julie M. Ray and James L. Knight, plus 2 local Panamanians, Pablo and Macedonio, who are snake enthusiasts and well versed in their natural environment. We are writing a field guide to the Snakes of Panama in English and Spanish. The field guide will include descriptions including color and scale counts, color photographs, natural history information, and maps for each species found in Panama. Venomous snakes will be well covered and include comparisons to similar non-venomous snakes, plus information on where to seek medical attention throughout Panama. We hope to raise $4900 through www.kickstarter.com, which will provide funds to visit museums/sites within the US and Panama to confirm records of snakes, to purchase a couple of important references, and to pay a small stipend to two Panamanians, who will help with the research, field work, and translation to Spanish. Any additional funds we raise will be used to further involve the Panamanians in the project. This funding will cover expenses for at least six months. To assist with the project visit www.kickstarter.com and select a level of donation. Each level results in a reward to the donor. All transactions are done through Amazon.com and no money is deducted from your account until the project meets its goal. If the project does not meet the goal, it is not funded and no money is deducted from your account. Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Free stay at La MICA Biological Station (Panama)
For those interested in one day visiting La MICA Biological Station in central Panama, either as a researcher, student, or simply as a tourist you may be interested in this. This year La MICA is asking people to donate $11. Right now we are offering a free night at La MICA for each donor. This coupon does not expire and can be gifted to someone else. $11 was chosen because it is 2011, but also because this amount of money actually goes a long way in Panama. For example: A GREAT daily wage for a Panamanian is $10 A 100 lb of concrete is $8.50 A 20 lb bag of rice is $6.95 With such funds we are able to continue to advance research and education for our visitors and the local people. If you are interested in one day visiting or simply would like to help our tropical conservation efforts, please consider helping us today. [ECOLOG-L] New Panama Bird Book
Hello Everyone - When I posted our last updates for La MICA Biological Station I mentioned that we were preparing a new book on the birds of central Panama. Some people wrote and asked to be alerted with the book was available, which it now is. See information below: Birds of Central Panama / Aves de Panamá Central (First Edition) By: Julie M. Ray Photos by: Joseph and Jonathan Lautenbach List compiled by: Santana Arcia and Ken Allaire Birds of Central Panama / Aves de Panamá Central (First Edition) is a checklist including over 375 birds found in central Panama, specifically around La MICA Biological Station and Omar Torrijos National Park near El Copé, Coclé Province, Republic of Panama. This is the first comprehensive list to be published for this area of Panama and is a great supplement to other avian literature available for Latin America. The book includes over 25 colored pictures and information on the area. All text, including bird names, is in English and Spanish. All proceeds will be donated to conservation-oriented research conducted in the El Copé area through La MICA Biological Station and the incorporation of local Panamanians in such studies. Books are printed when ordered. To order visit http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2155541. If you would like to order in bulk, please contact Julie at julie@lamica.org. Julie M. [ECOLOG-L] Advisory Committee to be formed
La MICA Biological Station (http://www.lamica.org) is a newly developed research and education facility located in El Copé, Coclé province in central Panama. The region is situated on the Continental Divide and includes lowlands (200 m) – highlands (1450 m) in cloud forest. La MICA is primarily a community-run station that has just begun to host students, researchers, and general tourists. La MICA hopes to develop long-term research programs. We are launching education programs for the local schoolchildren and students from around the world. We plan to begin global outreach to organizations and schools in the near future. In order to best facilitate our goals, we would like to form an advisory committee. Members would offer suggestions and valuable information on a variety of topics obtaining to research and educational programs in the tropical forest at a remote field station. We seek researchers and students to serve on our advisory committee. This is an unpaid position. Knowledge of or expertise in Neotropical biology (all areas), development of educational programs, long-term research, ecotourism, field station management, fundraising, and interaction with local communities are all areas we hope to represent. By having a variety of professions on the committee we hope that time commitment will be reasonable (members may choose to not address an issue due to lack of expertise or time). Communication will be primarily via email or Skype. All advisory committee members are encouraged to visit La MICA Biological Station but prior visitation is not necessary. If you are interested in joining our advisory committee, please send an email to Julie at la.m...@yahoo.com with general information about yourself including your areas of expertise and why you would like to be a member of the committee.
