optimizing animal health, welfare and reproduction along with guest experience 
and messaging.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

§  Analyze hormones in a variety of exotic animal species to assess physiology 
such as pregnancy, effective contraception, and positive welfare as part of our 
animals’ comprehensive wellness program

§  Present animal hormone and behavior information to science and animal 
husbandry and health partners to help with animal management decisions

  *   Share team projects and conservation stories with Disney’s Animal 
Kingdom® Theme Park Guests to inspire them to conserve species and their 
habitats

§  Develop and update standard operating guidelines and provide technical 
support for maintenance of assays and equipment

§  Maintain lab inventory, ensure hazardous waste compliance, prepare purchase 
orders, and assist with lab quality assurance tasks

§  Train endocrinology professional interns

  *   Assist in the development of interactive, interpretive experiences in 
partnership with the scientific and education staff

§  Work in close association with other members of the Science Operations Team

§  Contribute findings for staff seminars, scientific journals, conference 
presentations, and popular publications

Term:  Two year appointment (with 6 month initial probationary period) 
beginning as soon as January 2019 as an independent contractor. This position 
is a Laboratory Technician through New College of Florida based at Disney’s 
Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL. Applicant must be able to work in the United 
States. Employer will not pay fees associated with relocation or visa/work 
permit applications.

Required Qualifications:

§  B.S. or M.S. in biology, zoology, animal science, endocrinology, biological 
chemistry, or related field

§  Minimum of 1 year of non-classroom research laboratory experience in 
established scientific research program

§  Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills for both 
formal and informal audiences of all ages

§  Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented atmosphere, and in view of 
the public

  *   Enthusiasm for animal conservation and care in zoos

Preferred skills:

§  Demonstrated experience with enzyme immunoassays, HPLC and associated data 
analysis

§  Experience working in zoos/aquariums

The Department of Reproductive Sciences, Center for Species Survival of the 
Smithsonian's Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is proud to announce the 
availability of the JoGayle Howard Post-Doctoral Fellowship. This training 
opportunity is for women only. It honors the life and pioneering research of 
Dr. JoGayle Howard who made significant contributions to understanding the 
reproductive biology of endangered species, especially wild felids.



Our team is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the qualifications that 
embodied JoGayle Howard's career - enthusiasm, passion, hard work and absolute 
dedication to high quality science. Research will be in the area of felid 
reproductive biology, veterinary science and/or nutrition (or a combination).



The fellow will be working in a strong team environment with the opportunity 
for travel. A modest research allowance will be provided. This 2-year position 
(with an optional third year) has an annual stipend of $50,000.



A Ph.D. and/or D.V.M. are required. Candidates must have a strong interest in 
the study of felids and a background in reproductive physiology. We are 
considering only highly motivated women with outstanding communication skills 
(written and verbal) and evidence of working effectively with partners.



The Center for Species Survival has laboratories at the 3,200 acre SCBI 
facilities near Front Royal, VA and at the National Zoological Park in 
Washington DC. Its multidisciplinary research generates new knowledge to solve 
high priority conservation problems, especially related to species reproductive 
fitness, survival and sustainability.

-Be provided with practical training in the field of comparative animal

biology, zoology, wildlife biology, food science, nutrition.  Junior or Senior 
undergraduates may be considered depending on qualifications.  Completion of at 
least one college-level nutrition course is preferred.
-Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel).
-At least 3 months experience in at least two of the following areas: animal 
husbandry, research laboratory, independent research, food preparation.
-Demonstrated skills in technical writing (based on application essays; to be 
given to short list of candidates).
-Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and work in a walk-in cooler
