Sweet Briar College

Assistant Professor of Environmental Science (two positions)

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Sweet Briar College
seeks two environmental scientists, invested in the education of
undergraduates, for tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level.
These faculty will anchor an environmental science major integrated with other
science programs. We seek candidates with the Ph.D. in an environmental
science, teaching experience, and research that can involve undergraduates. We
are looking for candidates who will complement one another and our biology
faculty, and especially welcome applications from candidates focusing on
sustainable agriculture, natural resources, earth system science, or
environmental geography.

Sweet Briar is restructuring the environmental program, and the environmental
majors and courses described in the current catalog are being replaced. While
some changes are being put in place this year, the successful applicants will
have input into the full shape of the program.

Sweet Briar has distinct assets that offer opportunities for the environmental
program to thrive. Among these assets are:
· a 3250-acre campus with exceptional hardwood forests, permanent forest
plots, lakes, a community garden, and fields of warm-season grasses planted for
biofuels
· an ABET-accredited engineering degree program (one of two at women’s
colleges in the United States)
· a state-of-the art-research tower for biosphere-atmosphere interactions
· an endowed fund supporting an annual environmental forum
· a local agricultural economy including organic farms, wineries and
craft breweries, orchards, and agritourism

Requirements: A Ph.D. in an environmental science or related field; experience
teaching undergraduates; a research program with the potential to involve
undergraduates; demonstrated interest in working across disciplines and
engaging in collaborative scholarship, teaching or service.
Primary Responsibilities: teach introductory through capstone-level
environmental science courses; integrate campus and local issues in natural
resources, agriculture and sustainability into the curriculum; mentor students
in research; advise; participate in outreach to middle school and high school
girls interested in the environment.

Application Requirements

For full consideration, please submit to envirosea...@sbc.edu a single PDF file
containing a cover letter describing your qualifications for the position,

Director Linda Fink (lf...@sbc.edu). Review of applications will start 1
November 2016. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

[ECOLOG-L] Swimming mantids

2015-11-03 Thread Linda Fink
I am posting this inquiry for a reporter from Alabama. Please reply to
brai...@al.com

Ben Raines says: "I am looking for information about swimming behavior in
praying mantids. I filmed a mantid on a rocky river last week in Alabama. I
watched him jump into the river, which was 60 degrees, and swim across current
from rock to rock. He would hunt on a rock, and pick around in submerged algae,
then jump into the current and swim to a new spot. Is this a normal behavior
for mantids? I was stunned to see him jump in over and over. I watched him for
about 10 minutes and filmed him jumping in four or five different times. I have
found a 1972 article by P.L. Miller on “Swimming in mantids” but would like to
hear from any entomologists / naturalists who know anything about this
behavior."

Re: [ECOLOG-L] New Book for Nature Enthusiasts

2009-01-06 Thread Linda Fink
One of my favorite quotes is from Paul and Anne Ehrlich's 1981 book,
"Extinction":

"Many organisms have what might be called conventional beauty.
Birds, butterflies, flowers, and others are widely recognized as
esthetic resources...There is also a second kind of beauty, a beauty
of interest, which, even more than conventional beauty, develops in
the eye of the beholder...the beauty of intricacy, of sophistication
of design, of unusual behavior, of great antiquity--the capacity to
fascinate."(P. Ehrlich & A. Ehrlich, Extinction p. 38).
