The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is a non-profit organization

Our Invasives Strike Force (ISF) crews are TCCC crews which survey areas
for emerging invasive species and respond quickly to priority species with
aggressive control tools. ISF Crew members work with a wide range of park
partners at multiple sites throughout southern NY and northern NJ and will
be supported by an existing base of volunteers, the Terrestrial Invasive
Species Project Manager and the Director of Land Stewardship.  For more

We are seeking 3 individuals who share our passion for conservation and the
outdoors to join us in controlling non-native invasive plant species
entering our region.  The crew will perform both manual removal and
chemical treatment of invasive plants. All crew members will become NY
Pesticide Apprentices and NJ Pesticide Operators and may then be eligible
to take exams for licensing.  Crew members may also assist with training
workshops to teach volunteers.

Plant identification and eradication training will be provided (some
experience is preferred).   This is primarily an outdoor position and will
include periods of camping for multiple days at work sites. Crew members
will manage data and write reports and create maps on activities weekly.
Weekend work is required – work week is Thursday to Monday with Tuesday and
Wednesdays off.

Service Location: Lower Hudson Valley Region of New York and Northern New
Jersey

Term of Service: 900 hour term of service, May 2 through October 28,

The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC) is seeking qualified

Coordinator. The Trail Conference is a non-profit organization focused on
connecting people with nature through the volunteer stewardship of more
than 2,000 miles of hiking trails and surrounding natural areas throughout
southern New York and northern New Jersey. As part of our stewardship
efforts, the Trail Conference leads the Lower Hudson Partnership for
Regional Invasive Species Management (LHPRISM), a cooperative effort of
more than 40 organizations and agencies involved in invasive species work
in the region and supported by contract with the state of New York. We have
a thriving citizen science program that involves over 300 volunteers
annually in multiple overlapping programs. Several established citizen
science projects include the Invasives Strike Force which conducts invasive
plant surveys along hiking trails and invasive plant removal work days,
BlockBuster invasive plant surveys which search over 3x3 mi grids, two
types of invasive insect trap monitoring, and aquatic invasive species
surveys.  Data collected is used for prioritization of invasive species

PRISM and recruit and coordinate volunteer participation.

The NYNJTC is located in Mahwah, New Jersey. The Terrestrial Invasive
Species Project Manager will be based in Mahwah and conduct work in the
Lower Hudson Valley, New York (New York City, Westchester, Putnam,
Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Ulster Counties).This position has a 40 hour

annual report

EDUCATION

Overview
The Invasives Strike Force (ISF) is a program of the New York-New Jersey
Trail Conference, a non-profit organization focused on the stewardship of
more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails throughout southern New York and
northern New Jersey.  We are seeking a seasonal AmeriCorps member to join
our crew which completes invasive species surveys and control work and
leads volunteer removal teams.  The AmeriCorps member will become a NY
Pesticide Apprentice and a NJ Pesticide Operator and may then be eligible
to take exams for licensing. He/she will work with a wide range of partners
at multiple sites throughout southern NY and northern NJ and will be
supported by an existing base of volunteers. The AmeriCorps member may also
assist with training workshops to teach volunteers how to survey for
invasive plants and assist with creation or revision of training materials.
Occasionally the AmeriCorps member may represent the Trail Conference at
public events to recruit volunteers.

Plant identification and eradication training will be provided (some
experience is preferred).   The AmeriCorps member will manage data on a
weekly basis using both Excel and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
This is primarily an outdoor position. AmeriCorps members must attend
weekly status meeting in Mahwah. Some weekend work is required. Weekly
hours are flexible. Days off during the week may be taken when weekend work
is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Train for and become certified in New York and New Jersey pesticide
application and follow all applicable rules and regulations regarding the
use of pesticides
* Prepare and submit work permit applications for invasive removals to
various parks
* Organize and recruit volunteers for invasive removal workdays along
hiking trails
* Publicize invasive removal workdays via email and web site notifications
* Lead and co-lead invasive removal  workdays, including mechanical removal
and/or application of herbicides
* Conduct independent invasive removals and treatments along hiking trails
* Conduct surveys of hiking trails for a targeted set of invasive plants,
includes use of hand-held GPS.

Schedule:

-900 hour positions are full time May 1 through October 15, 2014 with a
five day work week not to exceed 40 hours consisting of 4 days per week in
the field and one day in the office. Training will be May 1 through May 19.

-300 hour positions are over an 8-11 week period. Work schedule is
flexible, but must be performed May 1 through October 15.

Description:
The work will occur on lands of the NY State Office of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and the Palisades
Interstate Park Commission. The Invasives Species Strike Team
Supervisor will perform work for and report to the Invasive Species
Project Specialist and the Invasive Species Control Field Director.
Collaboration and cooperation with regional staff will occur on all
projects. This position requires supervising invasive species field
work at Minnewaska State Park Preserve (50%), the Palisades Region
(25%) and the Taconic Region (25%). See

The goals of the projects will focus on eradication of known invasive
species populations, early detection/rapid response to new
infestations, educating park staff and visitors on the importance of
preventing invasive species introduction and protection of native
habitats. The Strike Team supervisor is expected to be reliable and
motivated with experience in natural resource management. At least one
year of experience with invasives species identification and control
methods is preferred. Supervisor must have past experience delegating
tasks and being responsible for the safety of others in an outdoor
setting.

Duties:
Primary duties include supervision of manual and sometimes mechanical
removal of invasive species, management and submission of paper and
electronic field data, assigning survey transects to team specialists,
and insuring post-removal monitoring is complete. The supervisor will
meet twice weekly with project specialist and/or director for briefing
and debriefing.  As many as 10 overnight travel and camping trips will
be necessary (meal allowance will be paid for overnight trips).
Flexibility, problem solving and leadership skills are necessary.

Qualifications:
•   A degree related to forestry, environmental studies, ecology,
natural resource management, or a relevant discipline such as
conservation biology.
•   A working knowledge of GPS and ecological monitoring methods.
•   The ability to carry 40 pounds and perform physical work in rough
terrain in summer conditions.
•   Some knowledge of invasive New York flora and fauna.
•   Past experience in a supervisory position.
•   Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and
team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
•   First Aid and CPR certification as a minimum WFR preferred.
•   Must possess a valid NY driver’s license.
•   Camping skills and equipment.
•   Leave No Trace camping knowledge is strongly desired.
•   NOLS, Outward Bound or similar outdoor leadership training a plus.
