Seasonal Avian Field Biologists (multiple positions) needed, starting 
early March through November with some extending until January-February 
2013. 

Multiple research projects focusing on Eastern, Midwestern and Western 
birds. Duties may include grassland bird, whooping crane, raptor nest 
surveys, breeding bird and lek surveys; depending on project and region.  
Individuals will be responsible for maintenance of equipment and data 
entry. Project and region assignments to be determined based on 
qualifications and skills. 

Only individuals with prior field experience in duties listed above and a 
minimum of a B.S or B.A. in wildlife biology or closely related field work 
will be considered.
 
State in cover letter and resume all experience and education addressing 
duties listed in addition to identification of birds by sight and sound 
(East, Midwest and/or Western), nest searching, use of compass and GPS 
unit, Microsoft  Excel and data entry.
 
Positions will be filled as suitable applicants are identified. 

Pay: Contingent upon experience.  Housing stipend will be provided 
depending on project and region. Onsite federal mileage compensation for 
personal vehicle use.

Requirements: Education (B.S. or B.A.) and experience (as detailed above) 
in wildlife biology or closely related field; ability to collect data with 
strong attention to detail; ability to work 6+ days per week doing 
physically demanding work, early mornings and evenings to dusk; a positive 
attitude and physical ability to walk distances in adverse environmental 
conditions, patience and focus to quietly observe and follow birds; good 
eyesight and hearing; ability to work independently and in groups; must be 
comfortable working on private land and interacting with landowners; 
flexibility to changes in protocol or job assignments; must supply your 
own binoculars and field vehicle.

The surveys will require approximately 20 hours of field work per week, for a

Field Technicians for Bird and Bat Surveys Upstate NY

WIND FARM Field Technicians needed for a study of the impact of a wind farm 
near Lowville, NY, on birds and bats. This study will assess the bird and bat 
mortality resulting from collisions with the turbines. Duties include searching 
for evidence of bird/bat collisions under towers and data entry. 

Employment will be by contract with Curry and Kerlinger, LLC (an environmental 
consulting company) from mid to late March, 2007 to November 31, 2007, with the 
possibility of extended employment in 2008.

Bird/Bat ID skills and bachelor’s degree preferred. Applicant must be 
physically fit and will need to maintain concentration while searching over 
long distances. Hours per week vary with ground and weather conditions. Part 
time positions may also be available for excellent candidates. A valid 
driver’s license and personal vehicle is required (mileage compensated). 
A vehicle with 4WD for frequent travel over gravel/dirt roads is preferable. 
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience.
